Full textAt a time when the Italian cinema seems to be struggling to renew itself, Moretti emerges as a director-actor. He imposes on the public his silhouette, his face, his self-centeredness, a certain self-image tinged with a touch of irony. Since his beginnings, he talks about himself or about his generation and the previous ones, through the characters he plays on screen. Reviewing his entire production, we identify the existence of an interaction between autobiography, reality and fiction. This thesis starts a chronological and thematic study of the "Moretian" work based on four main key elements. The first one deals with autobiography as a source of inspiration and questions how the director structures his films between autobiography and self-portrait. It also reveals how he converts his life experiences, objects or places into autobiographical traces. The second key element demonstrates how the representation of reality is at the very source of his creations with the participation of his relatives or by using written or visual materials. The third key element further explores the creative mechanisms of his work. It especially studies the insertion of film quotes or the shooting of a film within the film in his fictions. A detailed study of Mia madre will confirm the filmmaker's use of autobiography, reality and fiction in this narrative. The fourth key element reveals how fiction by becoming reality makes Moretti a visionary artist

Full textThe choice of authors is based on the desire to trace the evolution of narrative literature during the last four decades and present a wide range of themes and styles. In addition to the renowned Giovanni Orelli, this study considers the equally important works of writers such as Alberto Nessi, Claudio Nembrini, Anna Felder, Elda Guidinetti, Silvana Lattmann, Ennio Maccagno, among others. Very young writers whose first efforts are shaping the future of Swiss literature in Italian are also examined.
A special chapter is devoted to women writers. The goal is to identify the style and set of themes which distinguish their contribution from that of their colleagues. The study also discusses the importance of their presence on the literary scene after a time, not so far in the past, when women were confined to writing, in dialect, diaries and letters to relatives who had emigrated.
The discussion of the corpus is prefaced by a detailed presentation of the geographical, social and political context which often determines the literary outcome. The importance of this context has also influenced the way in which the texts are approached. The narratives studied reflect and interpret the problems society was facing at a particular time, as well as the intellectual movements that characterize each period. A chronological presentation of each individual author would have fragmented the dynamic background from which his or her works emerge and within which such works must be located. The name of an author will therefore resurface in different contexts when one of his or her works is discussed in connection with the given period or intellectual movement under examination. The literary history of each author, however, can be easily reconstructed through an attentive reading. What emerges at the end of the study is a widened field of knowledge for Italian studies, whose object can no longer be seen to coincide with the literary production within the borders of the Italian state.

Abstract: Stimulated by the frequent relation between Italo Calvino¿s fictional texts and the fable, as well as by the meaningful but also classificatory and non-organic critical field then created, this research intended to replace the fable issue into the initial period of Calvino¿s trajectory (1945-1956), in the middle of his hundreds of essays, letters, prefaces and introductions, mainly of those non-fictional texts from his books Saggi 1945-1985 and Lettere 1940-1985. The intention was to understand a continuity of semantic possibilities for the fable, demarcated by political, aesthetical and linguistic dispositions of Calvino¿s theoretical-critical practice through a decade, not keeping, however, the distance from his fiction, specially his two essential books from this period to the research: The path to the nest of spiders and Italian fables. Thus three significations for the fable were built here, relating it to the dialogue between the writer and the critics about the validation of a literary style, to the search for a narrative model adequate to the needs of the protagonist in a world on war and to the concerns about a moral configuration for the role of the writer in modernity

Abstract: Italo Calvino published Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore in 1979, after he had gone throw for a reflexive period, when he think about issues related with the romance as a literary genre that at the same time had concerned the cultural sphere of Europeans in the decades of fifty and sixty, when this matter was broadly discussed. Those discussions became even more frequent after Roland Barthes theorizing and the OULIPO (Ouvroir de Littératture Potentielle) experimentation's. In Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore the metaliterary approach is a strength feature since the first contact. The mechanisms involved in the narration act and its agents, the reader and the author, are both ostensibly staged in this hyperromance, like its author called it. According to peculiarities of its construction, this work has been subjected to analysis that seek to identify the operation of the author-work-receptor interaction, the "author function" and the "reader function", besides to establish readingtheories through the romance or to study it from the semiological and poststructuralist methodology. This works had consolidated an exclusive image of Italo Calvino as a postmodern writer par excellence, whom had devoted primarily to understand the logicallinguistic and structural processes, which are involved in the making of the literary text. We seek to follow closely the interlacing between the fiction and the critical thought in the mentioned work, based on various assumptions that are supported by a modus operandi recognizable in the works of italian critics like Asor Rosa, Alfonso Berardinelli, Mario Barenghi, Gian Carlo Ferretti and others. This search was also made through the reading and analyzing of Calvino's essays, notes, interviews and journalistic articles and the italian critic which welcomed his work. Therefore, we attempted a romance's analysis that was capable of revealing another dimension of the writer: an intellectual, who through the mediation of the literature, thought about the romance genre relevance in various moments of culture and society, mainly the italian ones

Abstract: This thesis presents a study about the novels A life and Zeno's conscience and some sparse chapters, i.e. "Un contratto", "Le confessioni del vegliardo", "Umbertino", "Il mio ozio" and "Il vecchione" from the Italian author Italo Svevo. Based on the analysis of the texts, the work shows how these narratives are examples of literary narcissism, in which the employed artifice to do Literature becomes the narrated theme itself. Furthermore, the study shows a clear evolution of Svevo's work in relation to the critic artifact and the consciousness of the creative work, since this thesis examines three different moments of his work and demonstrates an undeniable maturity of these issues. The emphasis of the undertaken analysis relies on the constituents relating to the fictional autobiographies and to the metafiction, giving rise also to the study of narrative focus and time

Full textThe aim of the present dissertation was to study the tales in the book Sessanta Racconti (1958) to analyze the relation between author\'s style within the surrealist aesthetics. We tried to identify similarities, transposition or review, through the study of specific surrealistic elements (objective hazard, black humour, dream, marvelous and fantastic) that was used by Buzzati to create his 16 selected tales. Thus we intend to show a idea of the Buzzati´s surrealism, different of another surrealist manifestations, but at the same time in dialogue with the aesthetic model related to André Breton and his followers. Finally we intend to improve the author\'s researches, with suggestions for the development of new approaches to analysis and translations of Buzzati\'s works.
Aubry-Morici, Marine. "Pensée, narration, fiction. L’art combinatoire de l’essayisme italien hypercontemporain (2000-2019)." Thesis, Paris 3, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA030064.
Full textThe dissertation proposes to study current phenomena of generic contamination between the story and the essay in Italian literature of the 21st century, by way of the category of essayism and by drawing on theories of the essay formulated in the 20th century, in particular those of Lukács, Bense and Adorno, considering a hyper-contemporary corpus (Franco Arminio (1960 - ), Vitaliano Trevisan (1960 - ), Tommaso Pincio (1960 - ) and Giorgio Vasta (1970 - ). If the Italian essay has been often confined to the forms of literary or political criticism, its newest forms, renewable in more general contexts of hybridization between fiction and nonfiction, put existing categories in a state of crisis. The dissertation shows that in continuing the tradition of reflexive writing organized around the “I,” (Mon- taigne), current Italian essayism mediates, comments, speculates around a variety of objects, and in doing so, allows itself more and more to resort to narrativity and the power of the imagination. It is therefore studied as a combinatory and mimetic form of writing that borrows forms from other genres (biography, autofiction, narrative reporting) and draws on the literary reservoir for its processes (epiphanies, allegories, estrangement) in order to serve the “thought in the making.” The research reveals that current Italian essayism, in making allies of thought, narration and fiction, presents itself as an ars combinatoria basing its organizational fulcrum on its reflexive scope as well as on “thematization.” It questions this reflection on the real and this critical writing of the present, through their con- sideration alongside the philosophy and anthropology of our time

Full textPrimo Levi (1919-1987), of Jewish origin, anti-fascist and chemist of formation, passes nearly a year of his life as a prisoner at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Captured as partigiano, deported as Jew, and survivor by chance, Levi makes that experience, through the need of narrating, the starting point of his literature. His pathway starts from the testimonial literature, subject of his first two works, Se questo è un uomo and La tregua. However, his narrative vocation makes him cultivate the most diverse genres throughout his career, from autobiography to poetry, romance, fantastic tales and science fiction. The analysis of the literary work of Levi, mandatorily, must consider two aspects that are on the genesis and construction of his writings: the first one is the origin of his literature, born from his experience as prisoner and from the observation of that universe - and from which he never came off; the second one is his formation, since, as a chemist, the way he looked at the world was determined by the precepts of the science he chose, and to which he was passionate. Therefore, we intend to analyze Levis literature from the relationship it establishes with science, technique and technology, starting from his debut book, in which the look of the scientist allows to define the Lager as a great biological and social experiment. The references for this analysis will be the first two volumes of short stories, that bind to the tradition of fantastic and science fiction Storie naturali and Vizio di forma and the two books of the 70s, that present technique and work as symbols of freedom: Il sistema periodico, work in which chemistry, chemists and their work are protagonists; and La chiave a stella, that presents the exaltation of liberatory work, promoter of satisfaction and happiness. Thus, we will demonstrate that any page of Primo Levis literature is dissociated from his experience as deported or his scientific training, and it directly influences his style, transforming it into one of the leading representatives in world literature, from the relationship between \"the two cultures \", as well as one of the major prose writers of the second half of the 20th century.

Full textThis work is composed of two parts. In the first one, I critically analyze how Boccaccio was read by the main theorists of the novel (Schlegel, Hegel, Lukács, Bakhtine, Auerbach); once described individually, these authors are later confronted with each other. A third chapter deals with new perspectives in the theory of the novel, which provide the foundation for a new interpretation of Boccaccio’s Decameron. The second part is devoted to Boccaccio’s works in themselves. First, I analyze Boccaccio’s rewriting of the dantean episode of Paolo and Francesca (Inf. V). In the same chapter I also discuss Boccaccio’s theory of the fabula as it is developed in his Genealogie deorum gentilium, by focusing on crucial issues such as allegory, knowledge and consolation. I conclude the chapter with an inquiry on the Filocolo’s narrative framework; particular attention is devoted to the episode of the «Questioni d’amore» and to its functions in the economy of the whole work. The second chapter puts forward a new reading of the Decameron, based on the notion of ‘compassion’; I analyze the Decameron’s narrative framework on the ground of philosophical and ethical categories. I also explore how the beliefs’ device is shaped by Boccaccio; the chapter ends with an enquiry around the concept of fortune, its theorization and representation in the Decameron. The third and final chapter is devoted to the individual interpretation of five novellas (IV, 4; V, 1; II, 7; II, 9; X, 10)

Pierobon, Ermenegilda. "Trasgressione e consenso nella vocazione realistica di una scrittrice ottocentesca : Itinerario Artistico della Marchesa Colombi (Maria Antonietta Torriani, 1840-1920)." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/15782.
Full textThe aim of the present study is to offer a critical contribution on the writings of the Marchesa Colombi by tracing and developing those aspects of her work which best characterise her personality as a woman and as a writer. Her poetical choices, based on the ideal of an intimate, indivisible unity of woman-word-language and on the harmonious correlation between life and art, focus sharply on her conflict with the repressive and misogynist ambience of nineteenth-century Italy. Her works reveal a constant tension between the need to adapt in order to defend her own presence (as a writer) and the urge to transgress as a means to safeguard her inner, personal coherence. The author's ambivalence towards the father, depositary of the social order, is further reflected, in keeping with her poetical vision, in the polemical debates held with the fathers of Italian literature. Whereas these debates remain embedded within a metatextual discourse, the genuine and authentic message of her works is generally expressed on the metaphorical and symbolic levels and by an extensive antiphrastic use of irony. The need to stress the repression and death of feminine values, the intellectual and physical creativity which constitute the true essence of the individual, goes hand in hand with the artist's achievement of maturity as a painful compromise with the hard rules imposed by life. From the cruelty of a alienating labour to the brutal collapse of her ideals and of love, Colombi is able to achieve in her major works a new form of balance between life and art which, by sublimating the experience of death, elevates the artistic expression to the heights of personal salvation and of self-realization. By affirming her art as a product of the feminine mind at the service of justice and truth, she plays out her disobedience against all arbitrary forms of power. This study of the works of the Marchesa Colombi reveals the image of a writer who distinguishes herself not only for her originality and complexity but also for the marked modernity both in her style and in her choice of subject
