Olivastri, Valentina. "Antonio Pistoia : the poetic world of a customs collector." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2000. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349290/.

Abstract:
The object of the present study is Antonio Pistoia (1436? - 1502), a jocular poet and customs collector who worked mainly in Northern Italy. Although his reputation as a notable literary figure has suffered from neglect in recent times, his work was appreciated by and known to his contemporaries including Pietro Aretino, Ludovico Ariosto, Matteo Bandello, Francesco Berni and Baldesar Castiglione. Research on his life and work came to a halt at the beginning of this century and since then he has failed to attract significant attention. The present study attempts to review and re-examine both the man and his work with a view to putting Antonio Pistoia back on the literary map. My thesis is based on the idea that a poet can be explored from various points of view and with different methodologies tailored to the objects under investigation. In the case of Pistoia a biographical history alone or an interpretation of his work alone would provide only partial results. By combining the two I have attempted to see how he and his work fitted within the cultural scene, the social and historical setting of Renaissance Italy in a period of political and military crisis. Based on archive work and on new textual material retrieved from a number of European libraries, this study challenges and tests widely held theories concerning both his biography and his literary production. By collecting fresh references and winnowing old ones, it throws new light on a series of specific issues from matters of identification relating to the poet's life, the critical fortune of his collection of sonnets, his play Panfila and other minor works, and to problems of uncertain authorship, including poems of undisputed, doubtful and arbitrary attribution; the final section is devoted to his Canzoniere, its composition and the tradition to which it belongs and a thematic and stylistic overview of his poems. A codicological analysis of the allegedly autograph manuscript and a listing of Pistoia's archival documents, manuscripts and early printed sources, completely assembled for the first time and comprehensive of additional new findings, conclude the study.

Nanni, Emanuela. Thesis, Grenoble, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012GRENL047/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The previous studies have looked extensively on the translation of novels and most of these researches choose English or French as principal language sources. This Phd thesis concentrates instead the analysis first of all on poetic translation and also on writing poetry as well as on poetic criticism ‘made' in the inter-war period until the late 40s. Poetry was incontestably the critical, translational and creative locus. Poetry was the main interest of the circles of Italian intellectuals in Florence and in Milan, in Parma, in Rome and in Turin also. Exchanges between artists, critics, poets and translators played mostly in the field of poetry, more or less without being particularly hampered by the fascist censorship, until the mid-30s. Poetry became a field of concrete action because it upsets language's syntactic order and this encourages a new conception and design of the reality, as well a way to fight every monolithic solution refusing opacity and incompleteness.Using an expression of Henri Meschonnic poetry is “against the maintenance of the order”, and presents itself as a form of deep commitment (in order words a form of “engagement”) that involves awareness and taking a stand against reality. In a poetic discourse the political element is closed involved. In fact we assume that “politics” is any attempt to fight for the welfare of man and every attempt to achieve the highest degree of freedom of every individual. The subject of criticism and translating poetry inevitably merge with poetry at all, and it is to consider that poetry is in any case always a translation. Poetry and its effects have become the axes of this study that tries to present consistently the voices of several people who were poets, translators and literary critics at the same time. The final part of this work concentrates on the birth of a new type of intellectual who is a poet, a translator, a critic and often also a publisher. We tried to show also what type of engagement may trigger the writing of poems and the practice of poetic translation, describing how deep and passionate activism may arise 'attending' poetry. Poetry is always proposed as a constellation of meaning constantly "building" as a presence never definitive. This enhancement of the unfinished contributes to the questioning of the subject's identity and to the pursuit of his salvation. Every poetic multiplication of hypotheses allows the opening of a lot of horizons. Offering her moving body poetry has been, even during Fascism, a lever of great indisciplinarity face to the rule settled by the dictatorship and it has been an unsuspected instrument of protest and resistance

Cozzone, Iolanda. "Una poeta : perspectives on the translation of Janet Frame's Verse into Italian." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/16610.

Full text
Abstract:
Janet Frame (1924-2004) is known for being one of the most prolific, translated, and unconventional New Zealand novelists. Her work, however, includes a vast production of poems, which scholars and translators have ignored or, at least, not considered worthy for a comprehensive approach to her. Frame's work has undergone the further limitation of a strongly biography-based hermeneutics: from the gossiping around her alleged schizophrenia, to the popularity of the filmic version of her autobiography (An Angel at My Table) by Jane Campion, and the countless legends that have sprung around her, she has often been stigmatised and labelled the 'mad writer' of Campion's movie. This thesis links the risks of the life/myth-driven perspectives to the current lack of interest in Frame's poetry. Her poetic production is here presented as a fundamental part of her oeuvre and her idiosyncratic approach to writing. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in the literature on Frame and thus reconfigure her role as a poet. Through a combination of methodologies grounded in literary and verse translation theories, creativity and genre studies, poststructuralism and postcolonialism, this thesis investigates the most significant traits of Frame's prose and poetry, particularly the traits shared by both. It critiques past translations of Frame's prose into Italian where these have not taken into account the poetic value of her work, and suggests strategies for the translation of her verse into Italian, arguing that an informed approach to her poetry in translation may greatly contribute to a reconfiguration and re-evaluation of her legacy.

Full text
Abstract:
Artificial perspective and subsequent photographic technologies have been implicated in a dominating Western way of seeing—referred to here as 'natural vision'—in the critical discourses that have defined the last thirty years. These discourses of visual representation provide the background context against which the questions that shape this research are formed. It is set out to investigate whether early background forms derived from proto-perspective paintings can be employed to form an invigorated idea of landscape that is addressed to the crises that shape the present. And secondly, it asks whether it might be possible to redeploy perspectival technologies so that their earliest beginnings can problematise today’s digital contexts, rather than dismissing perspective as the progenitor of a visuality that controls and fixes the status of the observer in the logic of late capitalism. The thesis articulates the artwork’s material presence in relation to these visual, image-producing technologies. It is divided into three chapters, which outline twinned aspects of the practical and theoretical research: ‘Landscape / Fragment’, ‘Materiality / Affect’, and ‘Perspective / Projection’. Each chapter explores different facets of the argument, and the theoretical discussion unfolds through the studio work. With its emphasis on materiality, the thesis considers how these technologies can be used to challenge dominating visual structures as opposed to continually reinforcing them. The research looks beyond the linguistic tendencies of poststructuralism, and considers recent theories of materiality and affect. It draws from semiotic approaches that challenge the scientifically endorsed image of visual truth, and explores other articulations for the landscape image. It asks how these might be used to reimagine subject-spatial configurations defined through representation, and to challenge the associated linearity of narrative history. It is rooted in a desire to confront the extremes and excesses of ideologically driven and radicalised perspectival technologies.

Abstract:
Trata-se de uma tradução estrangeirizante, que preserva os arcaísmos e rebuscamentos do poema italiano, fundamentais em sua constituição como obra satírica ao se contrapor ao assunto narrado na obra: o dia a dia superficial e irrelevante de um jovem membro da aristocracia italiana do século XVIII.<br>Although the Milanese poet Giuseppe Parini (1729-1799) plays a prominent role in the history of Italian literature of the eighteenth century, he is not studied in Brazil, not even within the academic community focused on Italian studies. His narrative poem Il Giorno is considered one of the most important works of the Italian Settecento: it presents a harsh criticism to the nobility of the eighteenth century by means of a satire that seeks to oppose itself to the sentimental Arctic poetry, very much in vogue at the time. Parinis poem was an inspiration for great Italian writers that are studied nowadays, in Brazil as well as abroad, such as Leopardi, Manzoni and Ugo Foscolo. Original, classic and modern at the same time, Il Giorno deserves to be included in the literature studies of the Brazilian academic community, and, therefore, needs an annotated version in Brazilian Portuguese. We understand that its absence in the field of Italian studies in Brazil is dewed mainly to the difficulty of its comprehension, full of Latinisms and stylistic literary devices, and we believe that an annotated translation of at least one part of Il Giorno is a way to encourage teachers, researchers and students to get in touch with this great writer and, thereby, make him known in our academic community. Therefore, we present an annotated translation of Il Mattino, the first part of Il Giorno. It is a foreignization translation, with all the archaisms and refinements of the Italian poem, considering that those archaisms and refinements, when countering the subject narrated in the work the superficial and irrelevant day-to-day of a young member of the Italian aristocracy of the eighteenth century , are fundamental to the formation of the poem as a satiric work.

Is there a more effective method? Kumaravadivelu (2003 and 2008) presents theories about the Post method, and he emphasizes the importance of not centralizing the teaching based on methods, but according to the needs of the students and the context they are into. For this, the author presents parameters for teaching, macrostrategies and microstrategies. Based on his theories, this research was elaborated as a way to put into practice his assumptions, for the teaching of Italian as a FL. First of all, it was analyzed the story of the city which the students live, Cascavel, in Paraná. The city was colonized by descendants of Italian immigrants who came from Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and it is possible to notice the influence of this immigration in the city through feasts, food and the study of Italian Language. From the analyzes of this context, it was realized the importance of considering the story of the city inside the story of the students, pondering their memories and formation of the identities, insofar as the identity is built in society. Thus, it was explained theories about identity and memory. After that, it was made an analysis of the two books: Magari! and Nuovo Progetto 2. The objective was to find activities about memory, identity and immigration; nevertheless it is possible to notice the topics do not appear a lot. Finishing the research, it was elaborated activities to teach Italian Language as FL which talk about the Italian immigration to Cascavel, relating them with memory and identity, according with the assumptions of the Post Method. The purpose it is to help teachers and researchers showing them a starting point to work in a way to attend the needs of the students in the region.

Abstract:
<p>In this paper we aim to identify the most important factors that influence the decisions made by large Western MNCs concerning post entry changes (PEC) in the BRIC markets. Thiss tudy attempts to explain processes and reasons why these changes take place. In addition we make a comparison between strategies followed and the differences between them for each of the BRIC markets. Most academic literature focuses on entry mode theories, however little has been written onPEC. PEC today is a hot topic in the current international business environment. This isevident in the market as many Western MNCs that invested in emerging markets throughJoint Ventures (JV) during the late 1980s and 1990s are now restructuring their strategies in order to further their growth (Luo, 2007).The paper uses a qualitative study to explain and explore PEC strategies in each of the four BRIC markets, using case studies of three Italian large MNCs: Artsana, De Longhi and Luxottica. The study finds that firstly BRIC markets should not be seen as a whole, as academic literature has a tendency to suggest. Secondly, the study finds that country-specific conditions directly affect PEC choices and decisions differently in each market. We have identified a number of variables which influence PEC, of these economic conditions and institutional context pressures were found to be the most important determinants for PEC within the MNCs studied. This study will help management to better choose appropriate PEC and set the most suitable operational mode for each specific environment.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
In the decade following the end of the Second World War, a mass migration of Italian workers came to the United Kingdom to be employed in Britain’s factories and mines. Amongst these, many were women. Thanks to official recruitment schemes drafted by the British and Italian governments of the time, young women left Italy in their thousands, to be employed as domestic workers or in factories, especially in the textile districts of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Here, they joined other migrants recruited through the European Volunteer Workers scheme, a government-led operation aimed at sourcing manpower from mainland Europe. The Official Italian Scheme was one of such recruitments, but one of the least investigated. The present research begins by studying the process of recruitment of young Italian women, within the wider context of Italy’s post-war emigration policies and its diplomatic relations with Great Britain. Subsequently, the research focuses on the entry of Italian women in the textile districts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire and the process of their integration within British society. Finally, the thesis examines the attitudes of Catholic missionaries in Britain, the Italian expatriate community, the implications arising from mixed marriages and the formation of new multicultural families.

Boffo, Marco. "Interrogating the knowledge-based economy : from knowledge as a public good to Italian post-workerism." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2013. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/17843/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a critique of the reception of the Knowledge-Based Economy concept within both mainstream economics and contemporary Marxist debates. The first chapter analyses how this concept and attendant discussions have recently prompted mainstream economists to provide it with foundations within economic theory and advocate the development of an economics of knowledge. Given the fallacious understanding, within mainstream economics, of knowledge, the economy, and their interaction, the chapter demonstrates the flawed nature of the mainstream version of the Knowledge-Based Economy and the economics of knowledge as judged from the standpoint of any contribution holding different views on knowledge, the economy, and their interaction. The second chapter addresses the reinterpretation of the Knowledge-Based Economy as cognitive capitalism elaborated within Italian post-workerist autonomist Marxism. The latter theorises the preponderance of immaterial labour within contemporary capitalism, and has been recently recast in terms of Marxist economic analysis. Following the persistence of capitalism and the continuing relevance of Marxian analytical categories, the chapter demonstrates how the conceptualisation of contemporary capitalism as cognitive capitalism hinges on a misreading of Marxian value theory and its relation to the economy, and weakened links of the analysis with the politics of Marxism itself. The third chapter investigates issues related to the social ubiquity of networked computers, which is increasingly understood as driving new processes of class formation within capitalism and as instantiating new forms of exploitation considered, under the label of 'prosumption', as simultaneously more pervasive and less alienating. The chapter investigates these issues through the prism of recent work of Italian post-workerist Marxists critical of the cognitive capitalism debate. The chapter demonstrates the theoretical flaws inherent in both understanding technology as a vector of class formation and the concept of prosumption, while also deepening the critical understanding of Italian post-workerism elaborated in the second chapter.

FILIPPINI, JEAN PIERRE. "Le port de livourne et la toscane (1676-1814)." Paris 10, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990PA100112.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of leghorn harbour, from the edict of "stallaggio" (1676) to the restoration (1814), is that of an authentic growth, in spite of the napoleonic parenthesis. As a whartage port (with a regional, european and mediterranean function), having rised by the end of the 17th century to the level of the largest french harbours, leghorn is faced with a stagnation, or even a decline of its activity, at the time when the others take off. However, this unobtrusiveness does not indicate a definitive decline. Indeed, during the last three decades of the 18th century, the traffic gathers momentum again, with a high growth rate. That prosperity stands out for some fifteen years, during the franco-english naval war at the end of the century. Meanwhile, owing to the prosperity of the free port and to the privileges (the "livornina" of 1593), the town has grown. During the 18th century, it keeps on welcoming non catholic people (especially the jews) and attracts people of small account as well as businessmen, with their esperience and their networks

Heath, Clare Charlotte Olivia. "Eduardo Paolozzi : from utopia to dystopia 1928-1958." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/15738.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the early career of Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 – 2005), focusing in particular on his artworks of the 1940s and 1950s. Predominantly known for his post-World War Two activity as an eclectic artist, designer and pedagogue, Paolozzi emerged as an experimental alternative to the modernist formalism of Henry Moore’s generation and remains one of the acknowledged leaders of an artistic movement that helped invigorate the British art scene. The sheer volume and diversity of his creative output, however, its wide-ranging use of descriptive materials and profuse interests, has legitimised the now standard reception of his work as one of wilful, perhaps even whimsical, eclecticism. Thus, he has become simultaneously codified as British artist, child of Surrealism, and ‘father of Pop.’ The thesis presented here intends to offset the standard historiography of Paolozzi’s artistic development, employing instead an interpretation grounded in the artist’s Italian roots and which takes into consideration his exposure to wider avant-garde movements and trends. Such a re-evaluation enables sense to be made of the imagery and ideas present in his work, and gives shape to the superficial incoherence of the ‘fragmentary’ phases apparently marking his output. What emerges is an alternative trajectory, one that moves from the early collages, full of L'Esprit Nouveau and Futuristic enthusiasm for the New World, through his use of Greco-Roman art, mechanisation and Uomo Novo during the years of Fascism, to the more concerted reassessment of the modern post-War world that is embodied in his satirical brutalist sculptures and proto-Pop demythologies, these last works mapping an emergence out of totalitarianism and the rediscovery of ‘democratic and international values.’ In this new analysis, Paolozzi stands as one of the few international figures who consistently developed a mature and idiosyncratic rationale through which a new, non-Fascist modernism was reformulated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work aims to understand the process of didactization of a feature film in the context of teaching Italian as a foreign language (FL) with a foundation in Post-Method Pedagogy. The research is based on the observation that films are recurrent inputs in FL classes, but their use is little explored. We propose to investigate the theoretical principles and practical steps that can guide the teacher in the didactization of the filmic input in order to catalyze their pedagogical potential and maintain the appreciation of this cultural products aesthetic pleasure. In this perspective, we understand that the teacher invests in his/her autonomy by affirming his/her place as an intellectual capable of reflecting from the practice, builds a specific pedagogical dynamic for his/her students needs and the context in which pupils are inserted, besides contributing to a Citizenship approach to education. To that end, we anchored on the post-method pedagogy, as proposed by Kumaravadivelu, we discussed the process of elaborating a teaching material (TM), as well as its effects on the pedagogical context, we analyzed the feature film as an authentic input for the classes of FL, we sought to understand the concept of didactization and we debated didactic technique notions directing the question to the exploration of films. Such a theoretical discussion took the practical when the film Manuale d\'amore was didactized for an audience of level A2 and B1 students of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), mainly from Italiano no Campus (IC), diffusion course, and undergraduate students in Languages with qualification in Italian, from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP), where the course Manuale d\'amore: Un film per imparare l\'italiano was held. In methodological terms, the research was based on an interpretative paradigm in a participatory research model with exploratory bias. The data were generated from closed and open questionnaires, evaluation scale, field notes, recording of audio and video classes and students outputs records. The research culminated in the proposal of a systematic model of didactization that could assist teachers in the didactic exploration of feature films and in the verification of the relevance of the particular teaching context for the teaching-learning process. Besides that, it was verified that the process of didactization has the effect of empowering the teacher, since he/she becomes a protagonist in the planning of pedagogical actions reflecting and theorizing about his/her own practice and the context in which he/she acts.

Abstract:
The thesis examines the extent the means and the degree to which the American and the Vatican's common cultural ideology was expressed in the film industry of post-war Italy (1945-1960). Through a comparative approach of current theories developed on ideology and an analysis of official documents from the Vatican and the United States Department of State, the thesis investigates the decisive role that American production companies played in the development of the Italian film industry and their links to the Vatican. This analysis evaluates how the Italian production and distribution industries satisfied the American political and economic interests. American political and cultural ideology of the post-1945 era, is compared with the Roman Catholic ideology in order to assess how close their cultural propaganda was. This is followed by studies of the roles played by key individuals, such as Giulio Andreotti and institutions such as ANICA and A.G.I.S. involved in formulating the policies and regulations that affected the production and distribution of American and Italian films in the post-1945 era, as well as the involvement of the Roman Catholic Church in this process. The case studies, which make up the remaining part of the dissertation, illustrate the relationship with the theoretical issues raised in its first part and their ramifications in the relationship between the Catholics and Italian and America cinema. The operation of the Centro Cattolico Cinematografico combined with box-office returns allows for the creation of a new analytical technique to be applied, one that has not been utilized in previous studies of Neorealist films and Italian popular cinema. It makes it possible to highlight the cross-currents that existed across different cinematic genres and styles of those American and Italian post-war movies, which were under the Catholic Church's sphere of activity.

De, Simone Carolina. "Italy and the community of Sant'Egidio in the 1990s : 'coopetition' in post-Cold War Italian foreign policy?" Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2017. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3623/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore a specific feature of post-Cold War Italian foreign policy, throwing light from a perspective blending Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) and other International Relations (IR) insights, on the interactions occurred in the 1990s between the Italian state institutions and the Community of Sant’Egidio (CSE), a Catholic lay organisation, one of the most influential non-governmental organisations (NGOs) based in Italy, with a remarkable level of international activity. Firstly, this work offers a detailed account of the Italian “Foreign Policy Community” (Santoro 1991; Hilsman 1967 and 1993) and of the Community of Sant’Egidio, taking into consideration the international and domestic changes occurred after the demise of the Cold War, in order to understand where foreign policy governmental actors and a non state actor (NSA) such as Sant’Egidio fit within the bigger picture of the foreign policy process in Italy. This mapping exercise demonstrates that the country’s foreign policy setting is rather fragmented, featuring a) centres of power and influence scattered along different “rings”, according to the different issues and subpolicies at stake, on a case-by-case basis; and b) an institutional “inner ring” with a relatively high number of “access points” for external actors, i.e. a proactive NGO such as Sant'Egidio, which is located in the “second ring”. Secondly, after identifying slowly emerging “policy subsystems” (Verbeek and van Ufford 2001) in the specific foreign policy subfields of a) preventive diplomacy/crisis management and b) peace-making, in which the Italian governmental foreign policy machinery and the Community are among the extremely small number of actors playing a role and enjoying a certain degree of policy autonomy, this thesis focuses on these two foreign policy areas, in order to try to understand how relations unfolded between the two actors in the cases of the Algerian crisis of 1994-1998 and of the Mozambican peace process of 1990-1992. The examination of these events has showed both competitive (even conflicting) and cooperative relations, respectively on the Algerian dossier and in the Mozambican case. This thesis argues therefore that “coopetition”, a concept borrowed from literature on regulatory theory, and defined as “a flexible mix of competition and cooperation between governmental and non-governmental actors” (Esty and Geradin 2000), is – with some modifications – possibly the most accurate definition to capture the nature of interactions analysed.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I intend to analyse a selection of novels written between circa 1945 and 1965, which take the Fascist milieu as their subject. My aim is to investigate how the national past was revisited and reconstructed from the perspective of the newborn Italian Republic. The choices adopted by the selected writers in featuring a relatively 'new' kind of character, the 'Fascist', not only reveal the position of a single author in dealing with Fascism, but are linked to a wider process of manipulation, transmission and sometimes creation of a precise stereotype. The latter, even though revisited differently by each author, shows comparable features and recurrent themes and reveals a complex combination of continuity and reaction in the writers' relationship with the national past. A comparative approach aims to show how the representation of Fascism which emerges from the novels under examination, is related to and/or distant from other readings of the regime (namely political, psychoanalytical, sociological) in the first years after its fall, and it will lead to an analysis of the relationship of the writers with ideology and commitment in general. The thesis focuses on the presence of Fascist characters associated with and described through sexuality and erotic power relations, and the relationship between mass and the individual, which constitute a recurring and not yet fully explored theme in Italian post-war fiction. The thesis is structured in four parts. Part one explores the phase of transition from the regime to the Republic and the relationship between Fascism and fiction during and after the regime. It goes on to explore the representation of the figure of the Duce in literature and some works which combine sexuality and the representation of the regime, such as some novels by Carlo Emilio Gadda and Corrado Alvaro. Part two analyses the novel, Il conformista, by Alberto Moravia and some aspects of his relationship with Fascism. It investigates his representation of Fascism through homosexuality, the negative depiction of anti-Fascism, and the use of psychoanalysis as a key to understanding Fascism. Part three analyses Vitaliano Brancati's work, with a focus on his novel Il bell'Antonio, and the ironic connection between Fascism and gallismo. The chapter investigates the relationship between eros and passivity in the framework of the will to power of Fascism. Part four explores the work of Vasco Pratolini and it is divided in two sections. The first section focuses on the character of 'La signora' in Cronache di poveri amanti, an old lesbian woman who, according to many scholars, symbolizes the Duce. The second section of this chapter examines Un eroe del nostro tempo, a novel in which the character of the 'young Fascist' is represented in the context of post-1945 Italy. It deals with the problem of transition to post-Fascism of a generation who grew up under Fascism and is unprepared to face the new social and political system. This research into the representation of Fascism aims to offer new perspectives into the socio-cultural transformation and transmission of ideas as well as to reveal new affinities and diversities between some major Italian writers. Moreover, this thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of a delicate and controversial historical period, such as that of post-'45 Italy, and to the history of the rhetorical tropes that underlie representations of the Italian national self in contemporary literature.

It proceeds to describe how the teaching and learning of Standard Italian at the post-secondary level and in adult education in Montreal is affected by the multicultural nature of the community. The analysis of individual textbooks used in post-secondary and adult instruction in Montreal and the surrounding area follows. This study should provide an impetus for further investigation regarding the relationship between foreign language acquisition and the choice of textbooks for classroom use and it could provide solutions for some of the pedagogical problems arising from Montreal's linguistic plurality.

Many critic-theoretic documents and some rare poetries by Mario Luzi (never collected nor published by critics) are also reproduced. Moreover lyrics by various poets, such as Mario Luzi, Umberto Saba, Carlo Betocchi, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alessandro Parronchi, have been anthologised (with text transcription and apparatus criticus below); all of them present some changes in text compared to the final version, printed in volume. This problem worries all of us. It's not possible to stay in Rome without having cosmopolitan purposes". That was the question the German historian Theodor Mommsen asked the Italian minister of the Exchequer Quintino Sella. This question explains very well the objectives and subjects of my research work, analysing the historical reality and the myth of Rome as an operation put into practice by the ruling class. The operation was related to the construction of a civil religion in Italy after the national unification from 1870 (the Breccia di Porta Pia's year) to 1921 (the Unknown Soldier Rite's year). The object of the analysis concerns public manifestations related to the representations of political power, monuments and town-planning politics, which have designed the appearance of a nex capital. This appearance was born through a comparison between universal histories and memories evoked by Eternal town, both connected to Christianity and Antiquity. While trying to avoid any form of cultural consumption and standardization, this process highlights the role of the operations of knowledge as being a sustainable lever of the development of the territory. Assuming that the cultural dynamism, based on the knowledge of a territory, contributes to its general dynamism and to the implication of its population, this thesis aims at studying the design and the realization of an innovative knowledge tool, the Port Center, in the particular case of the city of Livorno (Italy), as well as its strategic position in the Old Fortress, the monument-lighthouse of the city. Knowledge urbanism thus offers an innovative perspective : to combine in a single tool the fact of facilitating the legitimization of port’s existence, while participating in the tourist re-launching of the city

Abstract:
Understanding the lives of Italian women who migrated to Canada and Australia in the post-war period is the goal of this thesis. Although governments assigned women secondary roles as dependants and 'followers' in the migration process, I argue that Italian women were central, not marginal, to the migration and settlement experiences of Italian immigrants. By placing Italian women front and centre of this study, I contribute to a small but growing body of work that challenges the male-centred perspective of most literature on Italian-Canadian and Italian-Australian migration and ethnicity.<br>This thesis is structured within a feminist framework and uses interdisciplinary methods to gather and interpret quantitative and qualitative information about the lives of Italian immigrant women in post-war Canada and Australia. Using government and church archives, personal interviews, ethnic newspapers, legal documents, marriage registers and participant observer fieldwork, I explore three major themes.<br>Firstly, I examine Italian immigrant women's understanding of power relations within their homes and workplaces. Rather than cast women as either passive victims or all-conquering heroines, I present the complexity of the sources of power and weakness in immigrant women's lives. I argue that Italian immigrant women had to cope with exploitation and disadvantage because of their class, gender and ethnic status. However, they responded to these challenges with resistance and resilience, and were able to affect change and wield power within certain constraints.<br>Secondly, I compare the experiences of migration and settlement for Italian immigrant women in Canada and Australia and show how women's experiences were united by common gender concerns. I found overwhelming similarities between the family lives and work experiences of Italian-Canadian and Italian-Australian immigrant women, and in the government policies and programs that attempted to direct their migration and settlement in the post-war period.<br>Finally, I examine how Italian immigrant women helped to construct what it means to be 'Italian' in post-war Canada and Australia. I show how gender roles assigned to, and chosen by, Italian-Canadian and Italian-Australian women, served as boundary markers for ethnic difference. Perceived differences in attitudes towards waged work, mothering, family responsibilities and sexuality were used by Italian immigrant women to distinguish themselves as members of an ethnic collective.

Abstract:
The present study intends to propose a reflection about the contributions the practice of theater games may bring to the learning of a foreign language (Italian). The hypothesis of our research is that the theater games achievement from action models (KOUDELA, 1991, 1996), fairly common practice to the pedagogy of theater, can create new opportunities/learning situations and potentiate the teaching-learning of language process in the communicative approach perspective. To this purpose, we use the records of games proposed by Spolin (2001) as basis, which were extended and contextualized to the context of languages related to the language teaching. Regarding theoretical aspects, we try to present the game concept, the game system of the North American Viola Spolin, reflections about protocol and action model. We also seek to relate these concepts inherent to the theater pedagogy, the hierarchy of approaches, methods and tecniques (ANTHONY, 1963; RICHARDS & RODGERS, 1986), the collaborative language learning (FIGUEIREDO, 2003), the communicative teaching (ALMEIDA FILHO 1993, 2012; RICHARDS, 2006) and the Post-Method pedagogy (KUMARAVADIVELU, 1994, 2003). The experience which grounded our study was conducted with students and teachers of the Italian language, in July of 2012, in a course called Cultural Diffusion ministered by the own researcher performed by University of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of São Paulo. As a research methodology, we serve of the qualitative data analysis obtained by the viewing of recorded lectures and implementing of initial and final questionnaire and protocols production performed by participants (KOUDELA, 1996, 2001). The data analysis points to the following theater games contributions to the communicative room, such as: development of students and teachers autonomy in relation the teaching-learning process, integrated use of communication skills, facilitation of interaction / negotiation and construction of authentic environments of oral interaction during the teaching-learning process of languages

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our research aims to understand how the environment is taken into account in port development. For that purpose, we analysed litigation where public and private players went to court over environmental issues. To do so, we created a method based on a geo-law grid that we used to read and analyse judgements on environmental issues linked to ports, and to grasp the variety of characteristics of these judgements on which we can base a quantitative and qualitative analysis. Our thesis is unique in using a legal approach to study port development. Using the prism of litigation provides valuable information to understand the relationships between private and public players involved in the development of ports as they face environmental issues. As a contribution to this purpose, we provide profiles of how the environment has been taken into account in port development. These port profiles can help us better understand new environmental disputes, and help us find better ways to take the environment into account in port development

Abstract:
The @formation of the teacher is realized with complex procedures within which bureaucratic aspects are still shaped merely. Moreover the initial phase of such a trial appears characterized from contents far from the practical necessities of the theacher. In the scholastic practice it does not result permissible to treat in a different way, the theoretical appeals the pointing out the educational procedures. Besides the knots we need to loose are those that attemp to procrastinate an executive role of the teachers, who seem to be only a sort of executors of models imposed by others regarding to the context in which they perform their profession. In the didactic practices, however, the social actors pursuing the formation purposes of the school are progressively affirming their instituent role. This doesn't prevent from finding a sort of culture resisting to the change and capable of entering the minds that rule the daily scholastic life. The ethnography, clearing the instituent function of the social actors, seen while they are producing the specific culture of their own field, it really allows a meaningful reapproaching between theory and practice not only to go on confusing them but to attribute, to the practice a suitable theoretical perspective. The present ethnographic work about the young teacher's formation year shows how it's really the daily practice that allows the structure of a professionalism suitable either to the complex conditions in which the school works, or to the manifold social necessities. Therefore it is sure, that the ethnographic search, offering a scientific certification of their own investigations, it is a practical knowledge which is useful to the practice

Spagnolo, Simone. "Each tale chases another : metaphorical representations, non-linearity and openness of narrative structure in Italian opera from post-WWII to 'It makes no difference'." Thesis, City University London, 2015. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/13570/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work addresses the demands of framing a theoretical problem and practice-based research and it therefore comprises two parts: a thesis and a composition. The thesis discusses the narrative structure of post-WWII Italian avant-garde opera in conceptual terms and demonstrates how it develops on three principal features: the metaphorical representation of socio-political conditions, the non-linearity of the dramaturgy, and openness to a plurality of interpretations. My composition It makes no difference contributes both as a new musico-theatrical work and an outcome of the discussion presented in the thesis. The main text is composed of three main chapters, each respectively dedicated to the features of socio-political representation, non-linearity and openness. Each chapter is in turn divided into two sub-chapters: the first presents the contextualisation and analysis of post-WWII Italian experimental operas, the second explores It makes no difference in relation to both these operas and the above three features. The discussion examines those works that have most significantly experimented with socio-political representations, non-linearity and openness. These include Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960 (1961), Sylvano Bussotti’s La Passion selon Sade (1966) and Luciano Berio’s Opera (1977). At the same time, it omits both those operas relying on traditional operatic principles and those others that, although being experimental, do not focus on the three features this thesis puts forward. This study considers post-WWII Italian avant-garde opera in cross-disciplinary terms and highlights the necessity of discussing it in relation to disciplines other than those proper to the genre of opera, including prose-theatre, literature, politics and philosophy. The composition, on the other hand, provides a synthesis of the above three features: It makes no difference develops a multi-narrative structure whilst providing a representation of contemporary Italian socio-political life and epitomising the concept of openness. At the same time, it integrates theatrical and literary elements and combines traditional notation and graphic scores.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1649, during the Fronde Parlementaire (1648-1650), Paris was teetering between opposing political camps that were trying to seize control of the city. The city's bourgeois parliament, in open rebellion to the political policies of King Louis XIV's Chief Minister, Cardinal Jules Mazarin, was raising an army and threatening to oust the Italian imposter. With the rise in violence within the city limits, Parisian printers and booksellers began circulating political propaganda in the form of booklets, mini-plays, brochures, and pamphlets that came to be known as mazarinades. Because these mazarinades—which took their name from the very man they were either attacking or defending—were often scathing in their criticism of the political forces at play within the city, they were rarely attributed to an identifiable author. But while the minds behind the matter were usually anonymous, the authors of the mazarinades made frequent reference to specific public places within Paris in an attempt to rally support to their cause. These public places, especially the Bourbon-constructed projects of the Pont-Neuf and the Place Royale, were depicted in new ways to transform Parisian perceptions of the functionality of those places and to alter the relationship between the city's inhabitants and their Bourbon royal family. This was done in an effort to manipulate public opinion and to redefine the urban culture of the city during the conflict. This thesis demonstrates that the mazarinades were altering their Parisian readers' perceptions of the Pont-Neuf and the Place Royale as they tried to sway public opinion in favor of their authors' partisan viewpoints of the citywide conflict. By appropriating these places and subsequently attributing specific political viewpoints and behaviors to their visitors, the authors of the mazarinades sought to change the way Parisians perceived those places and thus redirect the political atmosphere of the city. Public space became the critical intersection of the many political camps and emerged as a major thematic element in the many mazarinades circulating throughout Paris at that time.

Lemos, Maya Suemi. Paris 4, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040103.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of vanity underlies the entire episteme of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: veritable discourse on the transience of life, on the ephemeral and vain character of all earthly things, it affects all the domains of artistic expression - literature, the visual arts, but also music. The musical representations on the theme of vanity abound in Post-Tridentine Italy, where they constitute an autonomous category within the ensemble of devotional music. Through the appropriation of almost every musical genre of the time - the sacred and the secular, the serious and learned but also the lighter forms - they take various discursive and operational paths. This variety testifies of the necessity to extend the moral discourse to all parts of society: the Vanities - be they pictorial, literal or musical - seem to materialize, in their condensation of meaning, the moral code of the time. Giving form to it, they affirm it and spread it, but can't, nevertheless, avoid to exhaust it

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-414725.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of Chinese acquisitions on Italian target firm performance, and explore which characteristics of the acquirer can determine a change of it. First, a Paired-Samples T-test has been applied to appreciate the difference between pre-and post-acquisition performance on 27 sample companies. Secondly, through an OLS regression, the impact of the Chinese acquirers’ characteristics on the performance of Italian target companies has been estimated for the year 2018. In addition, two interviews with managers from one sample company were carried out to complement the quantitative findings with qualitative insight. The results show that the performance of Italian target companies did not change significantly after the acquisition-at least not in the time span of 3 years used for the analysis- in terms of: profitability, solvency and growth. However, job creation slightly increased following the takeover. Furthermore, our findings indicate that, among the Influential factors examined, Chinese acquirers’ prior M&amp;Aexperience in developed countries and the level of relatedness have a significant and positive impact on the performance of Italian target sampled companies. Whereas, being acquired by a Chinese SOE or POE seems to not affect the performance. Lastly, another influential factor raised by our respondents resulted to be the integration strategy implemented by the Chinese acquirer.Indeed, choosing the appropriate integration strategy for the two entities can be crucial for the acquisition success, and ultimately, for the future performance of the target.

Abstract:
Espera-se que esta pesquisa possa contribuir para a área de ensino de línguas, em especial para estudos sobre produção de materiais didáticos em contextos de minorias linguísticas, como comunidades de imigrantes e refugiados.<br>This is a case study about the process of producing didactic material for an inheritance language course in the municipality of Pedrinhas Paulista, a former Italian colony, located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, founded in 1952. Abstract:
This thesis explores the current reconfiguration of feminism in Italy, particularly the practices and self-representations of women who struggle against racism and homophobia from a postcolonial standpoint and with a freely interpreted sense of sexual difference. These women create spaces of resistance that allow the emergence of new political positionalities, which go beyond western categories of ‘lesbian’, ‘feminist’ and ‘migrant’ by re-signifying them in novel ways. These “eccentric subjects” (de Lauretis 1999) work on the separatisms inside social movements, confounding their ideological polarizations by living difference as instances of vital conflict. They thus open up forms of participation based on the need for transversality. The analysis of the activists’ bodily itineraries and of the movements’ practices and cartographies shows that two main elements of connection exist between these women, who are characterized by multiplicity: on the one hand, their genealogies and origins; on the other, the dimensions of visibility, invisibility and representation. This terrona ethnography draws on a post-exotic anthropological tradition predicated on the researcher’s auto-ethnographic implication, and on a revision of the relation between research participants and the notion of the field. The thesis connects experiences in Paris, Palermo (southern Italy) and Verona (northeast Italy), problematizing forms of cultural competition and the representation of (different parts of) Italy from a postcolonial perspective
