Gaunt, Bethany Sarah Gaunt. "Poetry after Auschwitz : an Italian perspective." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10055775/.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a critical engagement with poetry about Auschwitz in all its various permutations, addressing issues such as why poetry is a particularly valuable form of Holocaust expression, and why different social groups have historically chosen to, and continue to, write poetry about Auschwitz. Adopting an analytical approach, this work foregrounds the poetical works themselves, in order to demonstrate how poetry facilitates an engagement with the past, for both the writer and reader (or indeed, singer and listener). Beginning with the work of those who experienced the Nazi camps first-hand, chapter one discusses the poetry of two survivors, Edith Bruck (b. 1932) and Primo Levi (1919-1987), identifying three driving motivations behind survivor-writing: to memorialise, to inform and to assist in the writer’s cathartic rehabilitation after Auschwitz. The second chapter offers a comparative analysis of two poems by Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968) and two of Francesco Guccini's (b. 1940) canzoni d'autore, exploring how these two artists introduced Auschwitz into their respective genres, and how they interpreted and enacted what they perceived as art's post-Holocaust imperative: to rebuild mankind. Chapter three engages with Italian translations of Paul Celan's (1920-1970) famous 'Todesfuge', exploring the significance of translators in the dissemination of Holocaust writing, and their role as expert intermediate readers. The chapter champions reading multiple translations in parallel, and demonstrates the ways in which different translators foreground different elements of the original work. Finally, chapter four offers an assessment of online poetry about Auschwitz. By focusing on Italian poetry website “Scrivere” and the work of Giorgia Spurio (b. 1986), this chapter discusses the democratisation of art online, the extra-textual possibilities the internet offers, and how these contemporary poems build upon previous Holocaust poems, perpetuating the poetical discussion of the Holocaust for a new generation of readers.

Abstract:
This research arose out of the will of spreading the presence of Umberto Sabas poetry in Brazil. We decided, thus, to select and translate some of his poems, using as a choice criterion the study of the poetical work of the italian poet out of the most frequent approach: the relation between his poetic persona and the city of Trieste. We have chosen this framing because we believe it enables a more embracing view of the work of the writer, since, from that relation, we can study many other important questions that may guide us to the comprehension of his poetry, specially those questions engendered in what we name here poetic of the life. With the expression poetic of the life, we seek to make a trend in Sabas poetry more evident: the openness to what he calls calda vita (warm life), the life realized in all its variety, including those moments of suffer and pain. In such path, we study the relation subject/city having as a north the interrelationship between the inner subject and the world matter, and from then, we establish a comparison among some features of Sabas and Baudelaires poetry, but also Pascolis, Leopardis and the Crepusculares. We also talk about the theme of the visual sense, of the desire, drives and memory, which are intertwined in the relation self/city. We talk, moreover, about the main formal aspects that characterize the poetry of the Italian, as, among others, the narrativity and the prosaicism, which are connected to what the critics call Sabas realism (the representation of scenes, facts and daily characters.)

Abstract:
This dissertation is a pilot study of Italian poetry reading through the use of experimental Phonetics. The main purpose of this study is to provide a first methodological proposal for investigation, identifying the characterizing elements of the poetic voice. The first part offers a theoretical introduction to the music of poetry and presents a literature review of experimental studies on this topic. The second part introduces the project and the archive of VIP-Voice of Italian Poets, which is dedicated to the study of the recordings of Italian poets. Finally, the third part develops a specific system to study the readings of Italian authors from the 1960s to the present. It proposes a periodization in three parts to outline a first “History of Italian poetry reading”, using a qualitative and a quantitative/comparative approach. In addition, common and distinct traits among many readings of the same poem are investigated, as well as the perception of poetry, tested on several levels. This study sheds light on the many, yet relatively unexplored, layers and rich historical heritage of Italian poetry reading of the last decades.

Abstract: The author Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) is undoubtedly one of the most important writers of the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century. Having already been recognized by critics for his theatrical innovations and their good buildings in prose, we decided to put poetry at the center of our research. Denying what certain hurried criticism spread in recent times, we will demonstrate that the poetry of Pirandello was not limited to the beginning of his literary work, but ended up doing this in virtually all the writer's career. Thus, we strive to show that already in youth poetry of the author the same obsessive theme appeared to him as the main constituent of your own literature, the "male di vivere" that will call evil of live (mal de viver). This transition of genres is not, in any way, devoid of own aesthetic sense of the Sicilian author, instead, it denounces the subject view of the world that his works include. Therefore, we dissect the evil of life that is contained in Pirandello's work to remove it from the historical moment that is trapped and materialize it as theoretical, philosophical and unphilosophical concepts within the Sicilian author poetry, but also demonstrating several branches in the work of Pirandello as a whole. We continue to do so, the lessons of De Castris, Storia di Pirandello (1982), Alfredo Bosi, O ser e o tempo da poesia (2000), Giacomo Leopardi, Zibaldone di pensieri (1921), Jean-Paul Sartre, O existencialismo é um humanismo (1970), and w... Aloè, Carla. "The New World mythology in Italian epic poetry, 1492-1650." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7013/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis explores the construction of the New World mythology as it appears in early modern Italian epic poems. It focuses on how Italian writers engage with and contribute to this process of myth-creation; how the newly created mythology relates to the political, social and cultural context of the time; and investigates extent to which it was affected by the personal agendas of the poets. By analysing three New World myths (Brazilian Amazons, Patagonian giants and Canadian pygmies), it provides insights into the perception that Italians had of the newly discovered lands in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, as well as providing a greater understanding of the role that early modern Italy had in the ‘invention’ of the Americas. Italian epic poets domesticated New World myths for their own purposes, using written, visual and material sources as an anchor for their agendas. The study of these myths changes, in some cases completely, our reading of the poems. New World myths are at once an exercise in ekphrasis of the maps, cartouches, engravings and collectible objects they derived from, and a record of the impact the Americas had on the early modern Italians.

Abstract:
This thesis defines ‘classical lyricism’ as any mode of appropriation of Greek and Latin monodic lyric whereby a poet may develop a wider discourse on poetry. Assuming classical lyricism as an internal category of enquiry, my thesis investigates the presence of Sappho and Catullus as lyric archetypes in Italian and North American poetry of the 20th century. The analysis concentrates on translations and appropriations of Sappho and Catullus in four case studies: Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) and Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968) in Italy; Ezra Pound (1885-1972) and Anne Carson (b. 1950) in North America. I first trace the poetic reception of Sappho and Catullus in the oeuvres of the four authors separately. I define and evaluate the role of the respective appropriations within each author’s work and poetics. I then contextualise the four case studies within the Italian and North American literary histories. Finally, through the new outlook afforded by the comparative angle of this thesis, I uncover some of the hidden threads connecting the different types of classical lyricism transnationally. The thesis shows that the course of classical lyricism takes two opposite aesthetic directions in Italy and in North America. Moreover, despite the two aesthetic trajectories diverging, I demonstrate that the four poets’ appropriations of Sappho and Catullus share certain topical characteristics. Three out of four types of classical lyricism are defined by a preference for Sappho’s and Catullus’ lyrics which deal with marriage rituals and defloration, patterns of death and rebirth, and solar myths. They stand out as the epiphenomena of the poets’ interest in the anthropological foundations of the lyric, which is grounded in a philosophical function associated with poetry as a quest for knowledge. I therefore ultimately propose that ‘classical lyricism’ may be considered as an independent historical and interpretative category of the classical legacy.

Giugliano, Marcello. "Translating mimesis of orality: Robert Frost’s poetry in catalan and italian." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/127352.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis studies the recreation of spoken language in Robert Frost’s poetry and the translation of Frost’s poetry that has been carried out by Agustí Bartra and Miquel Declot into Catalan, and by Giovanni Giudici into Italian. The study starts by describing the meaning of the term mimesis of orality and its main features. It stresses the complexity of the phenomenon, which can be explained better only if a more eclectic theoretical and methodological approach is adopted that focuses on both the linguistic features of mimesis of orality and their potential effect on readers. Frost’s poetic language is well-known for its spoken quality. In this research I define the main traits of the poet’s language and then study how his evocation of orality has been interpreted by the poet-translators Bartra, Desclot and Giudici and how it has been interwoven with their own poetic style. The translations share common traits that can be traced back to the stylistic patterns of Frost’s original poetry. However, they also present divergent stylistic solutions that can be ascribed to each translator. By contextualizing these personal translation choices a better understanding is achieved of the causes that have motivated them, which ultimately brings the research to explore issues related to the translators’ ideology and cultural commitment.

Abstract:
This dissertation intends to read the work Il Canzoniere, by Umberto Saba, based on the tensed descendent line which begins with the collection Trieste e una donna, and which point of lower temperature is Cose leggere e vaganti. We sought to focus our reading in the tensions and the ambivalence that go across the poetic production of the Triestian in such period. So, this work is structured in three chapters: on the first one, we centered the attention in Trieste e una donna and tried to understand how the confluent relation between the lyric-self and the sensory is established, as we seek to seize the elementary things and its consequent acceptance of life in all its variety; on the second one, we approached La serena disperazione and Poesie scritte durante la guerra, keeping the focus on the dynamics between permanence and rupture, being based on the motives to attempt the recall of the resources used in previous collections; on the third one, we approached Cose leggere e vaganti, in order to attempt to understand the apparent lightness which goes along the collection, and to show how, in a last stage, it is underlain the opposition between weight and lightness. Within this work, we seek to emphasize that the descendent tension line would be, in a last level, associated to the scape of pain and suffering.

Olivastri, Valentina. "Antonio Pistoia : the poetic world of a customs collector." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2000. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349290/.

Abstract:
The object of the present study is Antonio Pistoia (1436? - 1502), a jocular poet and customs collector who worked mainly in Northern Italy. Although his reputation as a notable literary figure has suffered from neglect in recent times, his work was appreciated by and known to his contemporaries including Pietro Aretino, Ludovico Ariosto, Matteo Bandello, Francesco Berni and Baldesar Castiglione. Research on his life and work came to a halt at the beginning of this century and since then he has failed to attract significant attention. The present study attempts to review and re-examine both the man and his work with a view to putting Antonio Pistoia back on the literary map. My thesis is based on the idea that a poet can be explored from various points of view and with different methodologies tailored to the objects under investigation. In the case of Pistoia a biographical history alone or an interpretation of his work alone would provide only partial results. By combining the two I have attempted to see how he and his work fitted within the cultural scene, the social and historical setting of Renaissance Italy in a period of political and military crisis. Based on archive work and on new textual material retrieved from a number of European libraries, this study challenges and tests widely held theories concerning both his biography and his literary production. By collecting fresh references and winnowing old ones, it throws new light on a series of specific issues from matters of identification relating to the poet's life, the critical fortune of his collection of sonnets, his play Panfila and other minor works, and to problems of uncertain authorship, including poems of undisputed, doubtful and arbitrary attribution; the final section is devoted to his Canzoniere, its composition and the tradition to which it belongs and a thematic and stylistic overview of his poems. A codicological analysis of the allegedly autograph manuscript and a listing of Pistoia's archival documents, manuscripts and early printed sources, completely assembled for the first time and comprehensive of additional new findings, conclude the study.

Abstract:
This essay is focused on Alfred Tennyson’s In Memoriam, interpreting the poem against the background of a Petrarchan tradition. In this text I show how Tennyson’s work exhibits several parallels to the traditional elements of Petrarchism, both in terms of the themes it explores and of itsmore formal aspects. Among these commonalities are such things as a persistent focus on a distant object of affection, a sense of conflict or tension between earthly and divine love and a overall chronology and progression which ties the sequence together into an almost narrative structure. Besides these similarities, I also explore how In Memoriam differs from its Petrarchan model, andhow its differences are born of the particular circumstances in which it was written. Thus I also show how Tennyson manages to adapt an older literary tradition to the needs of his own time.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis argues that, in the 1950s and 1960s, several Italian experimental writers developed photographic and cinematic modes of writing with the aim to innovate poetic form and content. By adopting an interdisciplinary framework, which intersects literary studies with visual and intermedial studies, this thesis analyses the works of Antonio Porta, Amelia Rosselli, and Edoardo Sanguineti. These authors were particularly sensitive to photographic and cinematic media, which inspired their poetics. Antonio Porta’s poetry, for instance, develops in dialogue with the photographic culture of the time, and makes references to the photographs of crime news. Furthermore, his poetry relies on the technique of poetic montage, and juxtaposes photographic and cinematic sequences through the use of percussive meter and frequent punctuation. Amelia Rosselli, on the other hand, refers to photography as a medium to capture and record her life story. Her poetry seems to work like a camera, recording a precise personal experience in both space and time. The still camera and film camera also inspire her metrical system, presented in her manifesto of poetics Spazi metrici. Finally, Edoardo Sanguineti claims to see the world photographically through a camera eye as well as through a cinematic mind. His poetry also borrows formal techniques from other artistic practices – such as collage and montage – and aims to deconstruct normative syntax as a form of resistance to bourgeois hegemony. This thesis intends to provide new and unexplored perspectives on the work of the authors analysed. It also suggests that there is a broader interrelation of literary and photographic cultures beyond the presented case studies. In post-war Italy, experimental and neo-avant-garde writers reshaped their poetry in direct dialogue with both photography and cinema. By recognising that the interactions between literature, photography, and cinema lay at the core of the poetic research of several authors in the 1950s and 1960s, this thesis aims to fill a gap in Italian Studies scholarship on poetry and calls for further research in this area.

Cozzone, Iolanda. "Una poeta : perspectives on the translation of Janet Frame's Verse into Italian." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/16610.

Full text
Abstract:
Janet Frame (1924-2004) is known for being one of the most prolific, translated, and unconventional New Zealand novelists. Her work, however, includes a vast production of poems, which scholars and translators have ignored or, at least, not considered worthy for a comprehensive approach to her. Frame's work has undergone the further limitation of a strongly biography-based hermeneutics: from the gossiping around her alleged schizophrenia, to the popularity of the filmic version of her autobiography (An Angel at My Table) by Jane Campion, and the countless legends that have sprung around her, she has often been stigmatised and labelled the 'mad writer' of Campion's movie. This thesis links the risks of the life/myth-driven perspectives to the current lack of interest in Frame's poetry. Her poetic production is here presented as a fundamental part of her oeuvre and her idiosyncratic approach to writing. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in the literature on Frame and thus reconfigure her role as a poet. Through a combination of methodologies grounded in literary and verse translation theories, creativity and genre studies, poststructuralism and postcolonialism, this thesis investigates the most significant traits of Frame's prose and poetry, particularly the traits shared by both. It critiques past translations of Frame's prose into Italian where these have not taken into account the poetic value of her work, and suggests strategies for the translation of her verse into Italian, arguing that an informed approach to her poetry in translation may greatly contribute to a reconfiguration and re-evaluation of her legacy.

Bowe, David James Alexander. "'E io a lui' : dialogic models of conversion and self-representation in medieval Italian poetry." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:ae039556-3805-42b8-90ed-bcc4b065d4da.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of dialogic processes in representations of conversion narratives and expressions of poetic subjectivity across the works of four poets: Guittone d’Arezzo (c.1235-1294), Guido Guinizzelli (c.1230-1276), Guido Cavalcanti (c.1255-1300) and Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). The introduction proposes a definition of ‘dialogic processes’ drawing on theoretical models of performativity and dialogism. It presents the usefulness of these approaches to the analysis of narratives of conversion and accounts of subjectivity in poetry. Chapter 1 analyses Guittone’s conversion poetics in light of these processes and seeks to complicate the teleology of his narrative of self. Chapter 2 examines the poetry of Guinizzelli and Cavalcanti, first establishing the ‘poetic conversion’ of Guinizzelli in dialogue with his own and others’ poetry. It then examines Cavalcanti’s physiological performance of a polyphonic subjectivity and how far this poetic expression partakes in the dialogic processes previously discussed in relation to religiously inflected writing. Chapters 3 and 4 will explore the manifestations of these phenomena of dialogue and performance in Dante’s oeuvre with particular focus on the Commedia as a key site for intertextual interaction both with his own earlier texts and with the texts (and figures) of the other poets under discussion. These chapters will seek to reopen the teleological closure which Dante tries to impose on his vernacular predecessors, as well as on his own works. The weight of critical engagement with Dante’s predecessors has treated them as sources or reference points for Dante’s own praxis. I aim to consider Guittone, Guinizzelli and Cavalcanti on their own terms and in dialogue with one another before approaching Dante through these poets, thus reconstructing the networks of poetic dialogue in late medieval Italy, and situating Dante firmly within a dialogic tradition of narratives of self and conversion.

Rassekh, Chohre. "Mystical poetry of Jalaloddin Rumi and Jacopone da Todi : A comparison." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28268.

Full text
Abstract:
"Mystical poetry of Jalaloddin Rumi and Jacopone da Todi: A comparison" attempts to analyze and prove the possibility of a comparison of mystical poetry of the Eastern and Western traditions. The consciousness of the One (which is ineffable) is the goal of the mystical experience. This experience finds its expression in the following ways: 1- By affirming its ineffability through the insufficiency of words (the negative way does not exist in complete separation from the affirmative). 2- By relying on imagery and symbols drawn from the phenomenal world and translating abstract concepts into terms that men can understand. The purpose of this dissertation is to prove that Jacopone da Todi's and Jalallodin Rumi's use of poetic imagery from physical reality is the best expression of their mystical quest. Poetry for Jacopone and Rumi, through metaphorical presence, becomes a vehicle toward Reality. The introduction investigates the historical setting and Rumi's and Jacopone's lives in relation to the cultural environment of the time. The first chapter discusses and defines the concept of mysticism and emphasizes the importance of two fundamental ideas in every type of mysticism: the ideas of Love and Transformation. The second chapter discusses the concept of love as used by Jacopone and Rumi in their poetry. Love is seen as a gift; man in his weakness would never be able to attract it or reject. Love is also seen as frenzy and passion, hence the use of images from even the most intimate sphere of life and from sensual love. The chapter, through close analysis of different texts, will also explore the relation between earthly love and spiritual love. The third chapter demonstrates how the concept of transformation, essential to spiritual growth, is developed in the poetry of Jacopone and Rumi through the use of imagery. The symbols of the Cross for Jacopone and of Fire for Rumi are used as examples of purification and growth through sacrifice: "What is poor brushwood when it falls into the fire? Is not the brushwood transformed into a spark by the fire"? The fourth chapter presents a thesis on the language of mysticism or the "mystical lexicon" found in the two poets analyzed despite the apparent lack of any interdependence between them or dependence by them on a common source.

De, Santo Paola Chiara. "(Ne) Habeas corpus: The Body and the Body Politic in the Figures of the Ambassador and the Courtesan in Renaissance Italy." Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11601.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers a comparative study of two key figures of the Italian Renaissance, the ambassador and the courtesan, and the place of their bodies in relation to the Renaissance body politic. In studying myriad textual spaces of the body natural within writings by and about these two seemingly opposite figures, I find that these spaces range from the material to the metaphorical. In the Renaissance material spaces were increasingly allocated to both figures, urban confinement for the prostitute, and the establishment of the embassy for the ambassador. Metaphorically, the prostitute becomes the "body" of the state, while the ambassador personifies its "mind". My dissertation proves that by allocating such material and metaphorical spaces to these figures, the early modern state effectively denies them the possibility of ownership over their own bodies. This ownership, however, is rhetorically reclaimed, I argue, through the bodies of their own texts.

Abstract:
A detailed analysis of poetry for children in Italy in a multidisciplinary direction (historical, thematic, rhetorical, pedagogical, sociological) had never been carried out, nor started until today. The present work is therefore the first that takes into consideration a sufficiently wide chronological range - from 1945 to the present - dealing with issues that were found scattered in the various chapters of literatures for children or in articles in specialized magazines. Despite the great interest that the publishing industry has shown in the past (at least since the Sixties onwards) and still demonstrates today towards the public of children, and despite the richness and variety of necklaces dedicated to the creation of poetry and poetry, the lack of a general study seemed to us a serious gap. The absence of a systematic critique can perhaps be explained by the little prestige that still today, despite everything, covers the writing intended for children, as if writing for children were only a prelude to “true” writing, and poetry addressed to children a simple (and simplified) premise of “true” poetry. We therefore think, first of all, of having demonstrated the importance of poetry for childhood in itself and its great significance in the process of education and aesthetic education. In our opinion, the criticism cannot in fact be subjected to didactic or moral principles, but must take into account this artistic approach : the poetry book for children must therefore satisfy its needs (curiosity, play, the need to express oneself ) and at the same time constitute a real bridge to art, literature and music. The contribution of disciplines such as sociology, in particular the reflections on the so-called “liquid” society and culture theorized by Zygmunt Bauman have enriched the proposed elaborations.Another innovation is that of having carried out a gender study in the field of childhood poetry. Although not definitive, this survey has allowed us to broaden the horizon of criticism. In the context of the authors we think we have had the merit of remembering authors who are not very present (or completely absent) in the anthologies of poetry for children, such as Tommaso Landolfi, Giulia Niccolai, Rossana Ombres and Giovanni Arpino and for having claimed and reserved one particular space to Giuseppe Pontremoli and Pierluigi Cappello. In the context of anthologies, we also rightly believe that we have included the analysis (and evaluation) of children’s anthologies in the study of poetic anthology (in particular those by Roberto Antonelli in « Critica del testo » and Niccolò Scaffai), a completely new operation. The proposed Anthology therefore follows the highlighted criteria and differs considerably from those of the past as well as those currently on the market

Papworth, Amelia. "A forgotten bestselling author : Laura Terracina in early modern Naples." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/290109.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a critical assessment of Laura Terracina (1519-c.1577) and her works. It argues that she was a consummate product of her age, embodying the tensions which ruled the Italian peninsula. Terracina published eight books and left a ninth in manuscript at the time of her death, winning legions of admirers and making her sixteenth-century Italy's most commercially successful female author. Yet in spite of her enormous popularity amongst her contemporaries, scholarship has largely neglected Terracina. This dissertation will open up an overdue field of enquiry into her life and works, exploring the significance of her role as a sixteenth-century female poet through the lenses of gender and class. By mapping her place in the literary landscape, it is hoped that this thesis will encourage scholars to afford Terracina the attention she so richly deserves. The first chapter of the dissertation situates Terracina as a poet of Naples, seeing her as a product of her family's political standing within the city, her academician status, and her own construction of an urban coterie of supporters. The second chapter considers the mechanics of the journey into print, assessing Terracina's own input and her close collaboration with male editors and publishers. It proposes a greater attribution of agency to Terracina than has thus far been made, arguing that she is, in fact, an important figure in the process of her texts reaching the hands of readers. The third chapter considers how the poet used her printed books as social tools, employing them to gain social and literary capital. The second section of the dissertation looks at two thematic strands within Terracina's poetry. Chapter four considers her political poetry, including her attitude towards the harm done to civilian populations across Europe. Chapter five looks at the religious dimension to Terracina's work, the spiritual poetry written in her later years, and the relationship this bears to her secular lyric. Finally, the dissertation concludes with a chapter on the contemporary reception of Terracina's texts, providing preliminary thoughts on how she was read, before closing with a consideration of her literary afterlife in the centuries that followed.

Barlow, Emma Louise. "Liminal Geographies of Suicide in Dante’s Commedia." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/21588.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the modes of representation of Dante’s conception of suicide in the Commedia, and the ways in which these conceptions shaped and were shaped by Dante’s contemporaneous intellectual and literary landscape. There is a longstanding tendency to examine Dante’s conception of suicide in a selective manner wherein Pier della Vigna and the anonymous Florentine suicide evoke the medieval Christian condemnation of suicide and Cato stands alone as the ‘exception to the rule’. For this reason, no true attempt has been made to gain a comprehensive understanding of Dante’s conception of suicide. The introduction discusses the theoretical and critical grounding of the research, gives context regarding previous studies of suicide in the Commedia, and defines the methodology and criteria for analysis. Chapter 1 assesses the intellectual history of suicide upon which Dante was likely drawing in devising his literary conception of suicide. Chapter 2 explores Dante’s depiction of the figures of Pier della Vigna, the anonymous Florentine suicide, and other suicides who are described in terms of their bestial characteristics, and situated in impassable liminal spaces that reflect the base motivations behind their suicides. Chapter 3 examines the figure of Cato, who is portrayed as embodying aspects of the divine, and whose littoral environs speak to his suicide as an act of resurrection. These two chapters envisage Dante’s suicides as existing on a ‘spectrum’ based on their hybrid embodiments and their liminal geographical positioning within Dante’s otherworld. Chapter 4 surveys the reception of Dantean conceptions of suicide in the post-Dante Italian literary tradition. The conclusion traces a preliminary phenomenology of suicide as a literary theme that replicates Dante’s experience of exile, identifying and interpreting the liminal geographies of suicide designed by Dante to enable a nuanced spectrum of exilic experience to emerge on the page. Thus I intend to rethink Dante’s text as the immediate predecessor to the more varied depictions of suicide as an ‘othering’ act that appear in Renaissance Italian literature, and therefore as playing a far more significant role in the Western intellectual history of suicide than had previously been considered.

Abstract:
Michelangelo Buonarroti (Florence, 1475 Rome, 1564) was the author of a not so vast poetic work, written in the course of almost all his life, alongside with his other artistic activities. Better known, in the past, mainly for its expressive and documental qualities, Michelangelos poetry has been subjected, in recent times, to a wide critical review, whose purpose is to reevaluate it in its poetical and formal aspects. In this context, the problem of his late poetry emerges as a fundamental one, as it drastically distinguishes itself from all his previous works. In fact, a great part of his first poetry is devoted to love themes, and its main style feature is the taste for formal difficulty. In his late years, however, Michelangelo would commit his verses almost exclusively to religious themes, alongside with a radical style simplification. Recent studies tried to understand this phenomenon, relating it mainly to the 16th century religious crisis, which implied, to a certain extent, the crisis of artistic and poetic forms, as well as Renascences ethical values. After contacting new religious ideas, many of reformist content (whose possible sources would be Vittoria Colonna and the spirituali circle of Juan de Valdés), Michelangelo had proposed a whole new set of poetic values, taking new paths with his compositions. In this sense, Michelangelos late poetry acquires a deeper meaning if looked against his work as a whole presenting itself, at one time, as a review of poetic tradition and of his own early writings, thus reflecting the crisis of humanist values in the first half of the 16th century.

Writers and poets who wrote in the "language of Venice" are far more numerous than is commonly reported in the history of Italian literature. It is the purpose of this dissertation to present and highlight their works.
Since here we mainly deal with writers and poets of the second half of the twentieth century, for which there is no roll call, we deemed it appropriate to research and introduce them, supplying for each of them detailed biobibliographical data.
In the course of our work we tried to sketch a subdivision of the matter which keeps in mind what has been previously done, but which is also new if one takes into account the whole scope and breadth of this literature.

My dissertation examines the ethical engagement of political invective poetry in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italy. Modern criticism tends to treat medieval invective as a playfully subversive but marginal poetic game with minimal ethical weight. Instead, I aim to restore these poetic productions to their original context: the history, law, and custom of Tuscan cities. This contexts allows me to explore how humor and fury, in the denunciation of political enemies, interact to establish not a game but an ethics of invective. I treat ethics as both theoretical and practical, referring to Aristotle, Cicero, and Brunetto Latini, and define ethics as the pursuit of the common good in a defined community. Chapter I introduces the corpus, its historical and cultural background, its critical reception, and my approach. Chapter II discusses medieval invective in Tuscany and surveys the cultural practice of invective writing. Chapter III approaches invectives written by Rustico Filippi during the Guelph and Ghibelline wars. Chapter IV explores invectives by Cecco Angiolieri set in Siena, which polemicize with the Sienese government and citizenry. Chapter V examines invectives in Dante's Commedia (Inf. 19, Purg. 6, and Par. 27), focusing on his unexpected humor and his critique of the papacy, the empire, and Italian city governments. My conclusion examines the ethical function of slanderous wit in wartime invective. These poems balance verbal aggression with humor, claiming a role for laughter in creating dialogue within conflict. Far from a stylistic or ludic exercise, each invective shows the poet's activism and ethical engagement. This dissertation includes previously published material.

Candiloro, Mauro. Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSES022/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite a few exceptions, Volponi’s poetry remains in the background as opposed to his narrative production, both in the Italian literary cannon and in the way it was received by critics. This seems to be a contradictory statement because the author considered himself as a poet primarily. This contradiction is inextricably linked to a very rich biography based on a plethora of life experiences and which makes Volponi a man and a writer at a crossroads between participation and dissidence, between order and disorder. I raise thus the question of the status assigned to poetry by Volponi. It was first necessary to redefine the notions of order and disorder to answer it: the scientific achievements of the beginning of the 20th century demonstrated that these two concepts are not antithetic anymore but that they are two necessary sides of any complex natural organization, including the human organization. I chose this complex interaction between order and disorder as a key to reading Volponi’s poetic work. First this complexity is to be found in Volponi’s biography, that shapes the fundamental frameworks of his poetry, frameworks which are then used as topics in each of his poetry books. In these works, the poet always clearly shows his will to elaborate progressively towards the one and only Book. Indeed, the poetic tools resorted to by the poet contribute to this elaboration because they vary according to the organization which they are meant to express. Finally, I tackled the problem of Volponi’s own reflection about poetry which leads him to conclude that poetry is not a literary genre, but a creative strength meant to connect man and matter but also man and man

Abstract:
Born in Castello, near Florence, Mario Luzi is today regarded as one of the highest poetical voice in Europe. The corpus of texts adopted to studying is Mario Luzi, The poetical works, edited by Stefano Verdino, Milano, Mondadori, «I Meridiani», 1998, which is divided into three chronological parts: Il giusto della vita, Nell’opera del mondo and Frasi nella luce nascente. From this textual organization, approved by the author, our project of research analyses Mario Luzi’s poetical works from his first book of verse, La barca (1935), which marks his hermetic season to Viaggio terrestre e celeste di Simone Martini (1994), which represents his full artistic maturity. The high frequency of words «vita» and «filo» in his first books of verse reveals that the theme of life is the principal thread of Luzi’s poetical works, but he interweaves metaphorically others poetic threads such as the thread of smile, the thread of light and the thread of voyage (as metaphor of life). Generally critics examine only one book of verse or no more of a homogeneous collection of poems. On the contrary, we think that a transversal reading and an intertextual exploration of the whole Luzi’poetical works give a new point of view on his artistic process of composition and at the same time they show original interpretations. By his poetry Mario Luzi pursues the ultimate aims of existence, the continuous transformations of reality, the modern human contradictions, and comes certitudes into question to achieve a more deep truth

Abstract:
Dialects have always had a negative reputation, and have been considered beneath the national language. Even the literature composed in the various regional languages has been considered inferior to the Italian one until only a few years ago, because it was thought that this literature had as an exclusive theme the peasant-popular world.
This thesis will not only demonstrate that dialects are languages deserving of respect, but also that Lucano dialect literature is not bogged down to the peasant-popular world. In fact, it is capable of expressing any concept that any national language is capable of, even if that concept does not originate in the peasant-popular world.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the metrical forms in Alfonso Gatto’s poetry. The work analyses Gatto’s entire production from the first book, Isola, dated 1932, up to the posthumous volume, Desinenze, published in 1977, one year after the writer’ s death. It is fundamental, in a global perspective on the metrical aspects, to delve on the interaction between art and literature. Gatto wrote several essays about painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre and cinema. His books were often illustrated by contemporary artists, like Fulvio Bianconi (Allegretto, 1957), Carlo Carrà (Venezia, 1964) and Graziana Pentich (Il vaporetto, 1963), the poet’s mate. The aesthetic concept that emerges from his articles and from the collaborations with some painters allows to adapt some categories used for the arts of XIX and XX centuries (Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract and Informal Art) to describe the metric of Gatto’s poems. Gatto used various poetic forms, both regular and closed (especially sonnets, quatrains of hendecasyllables and canzonette of settenari) and written in free verses (short and long ones). The connection among the different types of verses is similar to the dynamic aspects of painting, sculpture and cinema. The book in which explicitly appears the importance of the parallelism between painting and literature is Rime di viaggio per la terra dipinta, a collection of 100 poems created with 100 pictures painted by Gatto himself.

Abstract:
The paper aims to give a critical and annotated edition of vernacular poems by Baldassar Castiglione and Cesare Gonzaga. It reconstructs in detail the history of the circulation and tradition of the poems, and it examinates the historical and geographical context in which the texts were copied and spread. Attribution problems are discussed, an apocryphal poem is expunged from Castiglione’s corpus, unpublished texts are published. The whole corpus is composed of 32 texts, including the little collection of six lyric poems dedicated to Elisabetta Gonzaga. The negative apparatus is divided into two parts, where text variants and morphological differences between the witnesses are shown. Lyric poems are followed by the eclogue ‘Tirsi’. A commentary is provided, where models and parallel places are illustrated, aiming to highlight how the two poets pursued a faithful imitation of Petrarch poetry, following Pietro Bembo’s teachings, and showing their debts with the XVth Century court poetry.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of animal imagery in Petrarch's 'Rerum vulgarium fragmenta' (Rvf) as a means of elucidating his poetics in conversation with his predecessors. To achieve this aim, the present study compares and contrasts Petrarch's poetry with that of the poets quoted in Rvf 70, namely Arnaut Daniel, Guido Cavalcanti, Dante Alighieri and Cino da Pistoia. My research sheds light on the way in which Petrarch draws on and diverges from his precursors as he establishes his poetic language. The comparison between Petrarch and one or more of his predecessors poses three areas of enquiry central to my research: Petrarch's reuse of traditional animal images, such as those in troubadour poetry; the question of allegory in the Rvf; and the language and communication strategies which characterise Petrarch's poetic exchanges. Chapter 1 introduces a theoretical framework, based on the sources in Petrarch's possession, which discusses and reviews the implications, in medieval culture, of the notion of animality in relation to and in the representation of human passions. Chapter 2 considers Petrarch's potential engagement with the repertoire of animal imagery in the tradition of Occitan poetry. It examines the set of zoological images of bestiary derivation that Petrarch shares with the troubadours, specifically focusing on Petrarch's debt to Arnaut Daniel. Chapter 3 explores the role of allegory in Petrarch's animal imagery as compared with Dante's poetry. Chapter 4 considers how the employment of animal images varies between the poems without apparent correspondents and those with specific recipients. The first part of the chapter is concerned with the lyrics of Guido Cavalcanti and Cino da Pistoia, while the second part analyses animal vocabulary in the Rvf and in the poetic exchanges that Petrarch left uncollected as 'estravaganti'.

Abstract:
O poeta italiano Vittorio Sereni (1913-1983) é ainda inédito e pouco conhecido no Brasil.
Italian poet Vittorio Sereni (1913-1983) is still unpublished and relatively unknown in Brazil. In order to introduce the author to the Brazilian public, this research studies his debut book, Frontiera, 1941. Through a brief overview of the history of the Italian modern poets, the present study investigates the path followed by Vittorio Sereni during his youth, at the beginning of his literary career. Such path, as will be shown later, was of the utmost importance for the poets humanitarian, cultural and intellectual development, and includes the philosophy lectures given by Antonio Banfi at the University of Milan, the time spent as a writer at the magazine \"Corrente di vita giovanile\" and the admiration of and friendship with fellow poets Eugenio Montale, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Umberto Saba. Moreover, this research addresses the controversial debate on whether Sereni integrated or not the Italian hermetic movement in the 1930s and 40s. Lastly, through the study of four poems from the selected book, \"Inverno\", \"Inverno a Luino\". \"Strada di Zenna\" e \"Ecco le voci cadono\", recurrent central themes in Frontiera will be presented and analyzed.

Abstract:
This research explores the links between poetic expression and naturalistic imagery in Italian vernacular poetry from the 13th to the 14th century. Our study is based on the analysis of poetic structures whose main elements are images depicting the natural world. The main aim of this analysis is to establish the extent to which such literary images are linked to the spread of scientific research and knowledge in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe. Particular attention has been paid to scientific treatises, notably bestiaries, lapidaries, herbariums, and alchemical treatises, so as to propose an overall assessment of the influence of scientific knowledge in Italian poetry from its origin until the 14th century.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis, a literary historic path on the development of the lyric expression of courtly love will be created. The path will take us from the Provence through Germany and Sicily, and up to the Tuscany of the thirteen's century. The poetic characteristics of the hohe Minne and dolce stil novo will be particularly highlighted in order to facilitate the comprehension of their similarities and differences. It is understood that it will not be possible to offer a complete interpretation of the two lyric expressions. Rather, this thesis wishes to offer a basis for the development of further comparative studies between the German and Italian lyric expressions that were inspired by the Provencal courtly love. As representatives of the evolution of the poetry of love in Germany and Italy, Walther von der Vogelweide and Guido Cavalcanti were chosen for the innovative character of their poetry and the artistic quality of the results they achieved.

Abstract:
The research aims to identify the critical steps of the Renaissance’s lyric poetry which made Petrarch a consolidated model of civil and political rhetoricin the Italian literary tradition. The purpose of the analysis is the poetry of the sixteenth century, which was characterized by a homogeneous formal model theory. By analysing the collections of the time, characterized mainly by the predominance of love lyricism, I aim to define the features of a less known and less described Petrarchism, that is political Petrarchism

Abstract:
The work aims to provide a critical and commented edition of a short anonymous Milanese collection of poems (fourty-nine compositions). The thesis is structured in three parts: the first retraces the tradition of the text, handed down entirely from a single manuscript currently in a private collection, and partially from Florence, Biblioteca del Conservatorio, ms. Basevi 2441. In this part it is also proposed that this work was composed in the last decade of the fifteenth century, the scribe was Giovanni Battista Lorenzi and an artist known as “Maestro B. F.” was the miniaturist. They were active in Milan between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and worked in pair in producting luxury manuscripts. The second section focuses on the “canzoniere” and investigates the structure, themes, style, and metric. I try to contextualize this collection in the northern courtly poetry of the second half of the fifteenth century. The third part offers the critical edition, preceded by a linguistic note. Each poem has an introduction and a commentary, that discussing models, sources and loci paralleli, shows the author's close relationship with contemporary courtly poets.
