Abstract:
Italian zucchini is a very important crop due to its short cycle, high productivity and great market acceptance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the emergence and growth of Italian zucchini plants in substrates enriched with sewage sludge. The study was conducted in a greenhouse using Italian zucchini seeds purchased at a local commerce. The substrates were composed of dystrophic Yellow Red Latosol; sand and sewage sludge in the proportions of 0; 40; 80; 120 and 240 t ha-1, in a randomized block design. Each experimental plot was composed of twenty replicates. The following variables were analyzed: emergence, emergence velocity index, first leaf length, stem length, number of leaves, fresh and dry aerial plant part, volume and root dry mass. It was verified that the post-seminal growth of Italian zucchini is viable in maximum concentration of up to 398.56 t ha-1 of sewage sludge.

Abstract:
Conscious agricultural management, which aims to conserve natural resources, has been the target of contemporary agriculture. In this context, the reuse of water in deficit water depth in agricultural irrigation becomes a viable technique, and this work aimed to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depths with wastewater and soil mulching on the microbiological and postharvest characteristics of the Italian zucchini. The experiment was conducted in the field conditions with a randomized block design in a split-plot arrangement. Four irrigation depths (100%, 85%, 70%, and 55% of the estimated ETc from the Class A Evaporation Pan) and three types of soil mulching (rice husk, double-sided black and white polyethylene film, and uncovered soil) were analyzed. Texture, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids content (ºBrix), pH, and the ºBrix:TA ratio of the Italian zucchini were analyzed, besides the microbiological analysis. The irrigation depth or soil mulching did not influence the pH of the Italian zucchini. The uncovered soil promoted higher titratable acidity to the Italian zucchini. The texture of the fruit, the soluble solids, and the ºBrix:TA ratio was influenced by the types of soil mulching and irrigation depths. The use of wastewater for drip irrigation reduces the effects of the microbial load on the crop.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The italian zucchini is a vegetable of national importance, much appreciated, which requires techniques that aim to increase production in less space. Plant spacing can influence the development of plants and the fruit production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of Italian zucchini cultivars as a function of plant spacing. The experimental design was a randomized blocks in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme with four repetitions. The treatments consisted of a combination of two cultivars of zucchini (Alícia and Caserta) and four spacings between plants (0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 m). The evaluated characteristics were: total number of fruits plant-1, number of commercial fruits plant-1, total productivity, commercial and non commercial, fresh mass of commercial fruits and dry mass of the plant. The cultivars responded differently to spacings between plants. The Alicia hybrid showed higher commercial yield, 28,490.5 kg ha-1 at spacing of 0.64 m between plants and Caserta cultivar, 26,398.8 kg ha-1 at spacing of 0.4 m.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify the productive cycle response of Italian zucchini genotypes grown under field conditions in two growing seasons using the nonlinear logistic model and its critical points. Two randomized block experiments were conducted, with three genotypes (Caserta, PX13067051, and Tronco) and two growing seasons (spring-summer and summer-fall), with eight replicates and each experimental unit consisting of 7 plants. The logistic nonlinear model was adjusted for the fruit mass variable, as a function of the accumulated thermal sum, and the critical points were estimated by the partial derivatives of the adjusted function. Adjustment by bootstrap resampling was performed to address the violation of assumptions. The results of intrinsic and parametric nonlinearity confirm the quality of the model fit. This experiment demonstrated that the zucchini genotypes evaluated were more productive in the spring-summer growing season, using the parameters and critical points obtained from the logistic nonlinear model. Genotypes PX13067051 and Caserta showed superior productivity to the Tronco genotype, and also fruited earlier and at a higher rate of production. The logistic growth model and its critical points characterized the production cycle of the zucchini genotypes in different growing seasons and allowed inferences to be made to differentiate the genotypes and the growing seasons.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic performance of Italian zucchini as a function of phosphate fertilization. The experiments were carried at the Rafael Fernandes Experimental Farm, Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid Region, Mossoró, RN, Brazil, from August to November 2015 and from July to September 2016. The experimental design was randomized blocks in 2 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of the combination of two cultivars (Caserta and Alícia) and five doses of phosphorus (0, 40, 78, 120 and 150 kg ha-1 of P2O5). Phosphorus doses associated with the maximum marketable yields estimated were smaller for Alícia than for Caserta in the period from August to November 2015. In the period from July to September 2016, these estimated doses were higher for Alícia compared with Caserta. Alícia, regardless of crop season, was superior to Caserta. Zucchini cultivation from July to September of 2016 resulted in higher fruit yield in comparison to the period from August to November 2015.

Abstract:
Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) is one of the main economically important vegetables in Brazil, but its production is limited in semi-arid regions due to its water requirement. This study evaluated the effect of Codasal Plus 2000 in different application management on zucchini crops irrigated with saline water. The experiment was carried out at the Federal Rural University of Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN. A randomized block design was adopted with two salinity levels of irrigation water (S1 - 0.5 dS m-1; S2 - 5.0 dS m-1) and six application managements of Codasal Plus 2000 ((M1 - Absence (H2O); M2 - every 7 days (2 L ha-1); M3 - every 7 days (4 L ha-1); M4 - every 14 days (4 L ha-1); M5 - every 14 days (8 L ha-1); M6 - every 14 days (6 L ha-1)). Growth and production variables were evaluated. Regardless of application management, the dry mass of the vegetative part, dry mass of the fruits and total dry mass reduced by an average of 34.16%, 49.29% and 21.78. %, respectively, at the highest salinity. In fruits, the number, fresh mass and productivity were reduced by 67.75%, 21.77% and 72.48%, respectively, at the highest salinity level. Codasal Plus 2000 was unable to mitigate the negative effects of saline water.

Abstract:
Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) is a crop of global economic importance. Therefore, there has been a continuous search for alternative cultivation methods that contribute to improving its growth and development. In the context of sustainable agriculture, plant protection techniques involve the use of substances of natural origin (e.g., biorooters), which have a positive impact on the production cycle of plants. In this study, the effects of a lentil biorooter on the growth and development of Italian zucchini were investigated. Five treatments were analyzed in the study: 25 (T1), 50 (T2) and 75 (T3) mL of the biorooter; a chemical rooting agent (“Raixen PLUS ©”; T4); and a control (T0). The results showed that the application of the lentil biorooter (T3) increased the plant height by 166%, the number of leaves by 113%, the aerial fresh weight by 169%, the root length by 165%, the fresh and dry root weights by 102% and 116%, and the number of flowers and female flowers by 89% and 177%, respectively, compared to the control (T0). In the case of the conventional rooting agent “Raixen PLUS ©” T4, compared to (T3), the following agro-nomic variables were reduced: plant height by 13%; the number of leaves by 124%; fresh and dry aerial weight by 103% and 107%, respectively; fresh and dry root weight by 9% and 117%, respectively; and the number of total and female flowers by 112% and 160%, respectively. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to compare the heights of the plant between the five treatments, as well as to compare the number of leaves to the fresh aerial weight and the length of the root to its fresh weight. Furthermore, the principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated that the differences between components 1 and 2 appeared to be positively influenced by the root length. These results suggest that lentil biorooters could be an ecological alternative to conventional rooters, thus mitigating the adverse effects of their use in zucchini crop production. This is the first study to report on the induction of growth and development using a lentil biorooter in zucchini.

Abstract:
Background/Objectives: The process of cooking food can result in alterations to its nutrient composition due to changes in water content and the destruction or loss of certain micronutrients that occur in response to heat. This study examined the impact of diverse cooking techniques, namely grilling, microwave, and steam, on the macronutrients and minerals of vegetables commonly utilized in Italian cuisine (two varieties of zucchini, eggplants, and potatoes). Methods: The proximate composition was determined according to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methods. The content of the minerals (Ca, K, P, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, and Mn) was determined via ICP plasma after liquid washing. Results: Regarding macronutrients, the results revealed a notable difference in the carbohydrate profiles, whereas mineral retention demonstrated considerable heterogeneity. Some minerals, such as Na, Ca, Mn, and Fe, were found to be more prone to significant increases or losses. Moreover, the true retention factor (TR) calculations indicated that microwave cooking resulted in higher retention compared to the other methods for zucchini, while grilling demonstrated higher TR than microwave cooking for eggplants. Potatoes exhibited lower TR values than the other vegetables and their steaming resulted in higher retention than microwave cooking for K, P, Fe, and Zn. Conclusions: The results confirm the heterogeneous behaviors of minerals in commonly consumed Italian vegetables subjected to different cooking methods. The data underscore the need for additional research to understand the effects of heat treatments on mineral profiles and to determine specific retention factors linked to various cooking techniques. The significant gap between “true” and “apparent” retention factors, caused by changes in water content during cooking, highlight the need for new experimental data to update and enrich the existing literature on this topic.

Abstract:
Among begomovirus species, tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) is significant and stands out as a mechanically transmissible bipartite begomovirus originating from the Old World. However, the mechanisms underlying the mechanical transmission of different ToLCNDV strains remain understudied, as their natural transmission occurs via insect vectors. In this study, we investigated the mechanical transmissibility of two ToLCNDVs, one from Italy and another from Pakistan, in host plants. Several cucurbit species were screened, and symptom differences between the two ToLCNDV clones were observed only in zucchini when subjected to rubbing inoculation. The Italian isolate (ToLCNDV-ES) induced typical disease symptoms such as leaf curling, yellow mosaic, and internode stunting, whereas a normal phenotype was observed in zucchini mechanically infected with ToLCNDV-In (Pakistani isolate). Subsequently, a gene-swapping experiment between the two ToLCNDVs was conducted, and ToLCNDV-ES DNA-B was identified as a crucial factor in mechanical transmission. We then constructed chimeric mutant clones based on the DNA-B sequence and assessed their ability to induce symptoms in zucchini. These results indicated that the nuclear shuttle protein is a determinant of symptom development during ToLCNDV mechanical transmission. Moreover, several defense-related host genes showed significant changes in relative expression in different ToLCNDV clones, indicating their potential role in disease symptom development through the mechanical transmission of ToLCNDV. This is the first report comparing the mechanical transmissibility of two isolates of different ToLCNDV strains from the Mediterranean region and the Indian subcontinent in the same host plant, providing new insights into the virus’s pathogenicity across different geographic regions.

Abstract:
The present study focused on vitamin A and carotenoids (α-and β-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene) daily intake from the Italian total diet. The input of some food groups (cereals, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy, meat and meat products, fish) most responsible for major and minor contributions to the daily intake of these molecules was evaluated. Furthermore the contribution to the dietary intake of β-carotene and lutein of the most consumed vegetables in the market basket of the Italian total diet (beets, brassica vegetables, carrots, chicory, courgette (zucchini), green beans, lettuce, peas, pepper, spinach, tomatoes) was also investigated. Vitamin A daily intake was 855 mg/person/day. The vegetables food group made the greatest contribution (37%), followed by the meat and meat products food group (23%). The Italian total diet provided 14.3 mg/person/day of carotenoids; lycopene was the highest (7.4 mg/day), followed by lutein + zeaxanthin (4 mg/day), β-carotene (2.6 mg/day), α-carotene (0.15 mg/day), and β-cryptoxanthin (0.17 mg/day). Carrots and tomatoes were the main sources of β-carotene in the diet, otherwise the daily consumption of leafy vegetables (spinach, beets, lettuce) made the main contribution to lutein + zeaxanthin daily intake.

Abstract:
Surveys of yellowing viruses under nonheated and geothermal heated plastic tunnels and in open field crops of melon (Cucumis melo), cucumber (C. sativus), zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), squash (C. maxima), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), and ware cucurbit (Ecballium elaterium) were carried out year-round during 2000–2001, 2003, and 2004 in the major cucurbit-growing areas in Tunisia. Severe yellowing symptoms on older leaves of cucurbits were observed in open fields and under plastic-tunnel production systems. These yellowing symptoms and large populations of aphids (Aphis gossypii) on a diversity of cucurbit crops in Tunisia support the hypothesis of a viral cause of the disease. Virus identification using double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA), followed by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunocapture (IC)-RT-PCR showed that Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus (CABYV) was largely distributed in melon, cucumber, zucchini, squash, and watermelon crops. Ware cucurbit (E. elaterium) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) crops were identified as potential CABYV reservoirs. The RT-PCR-amplified partial coat protein (CP) and P4 genes were cloned and sequenced from nine Tunisian CABYV isolates. CP and P4 gene nucleotide and amino acid sequence comparisons as well as phylogenetic reconstructions showed that the Tunisian isolates clustered into two major subgroups. Comparisons with CABYV sequences retrieved from GenBank showed high nucleotide and CP amino acid identities, and close relationships of the Tunisian isolates with Italian and French isolates.

Abstract:
Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is a severe threat to cucurbit crops worldwide, including Pakistan. This study was pursued to evaluate the prevalence, geographic distribution, and molecular diversity of ZYMV isolates infecting cucurbits in Pakistan’s Pothwar region. Almost all the plant viruses act as a biotic stress on the host plants, which results in a yield loss. These viruses cause losses in single-infection or in mixed-infection cucurbit crops, and we have found a number of mixed-infected samples belonging to the Curubitaceae family. Serological detection of the tested potyviruses in the collected cucurbit samples revealed that ZYMV was the most prevalent virus, with a disease incidence (DI) at 35.2%, followed by Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) with an incidence of 2.2%, and Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) having an incidence as little as 0.5% in 2016. In the year 2017, a relatively higher disease incidence of 39.7%, 2.4%, and 0.3% for ZYMV, WMV, and PRSV, respectively, was recorded. ZYMV was the most prevalent virus with the highest incidence in Attock, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad, while PRSV was observed to be the highest in Islamabad and Jhelum. WMV infection was observed only in Rawalpindi and Chakwal. Newly detected Pakistani ZYMV isolates shared 95.8–97.0% nucleotide identities among themselves and 77.1–97.8% with other isolates retrieved from GenBank. Phylogenetic relationships obtained using different ZYMV isolates retrieved from GenBank and validated by in silico restriction analysis revealed that four Pakistani isolates clustered with other ZYMV isolates in group IIb with Chinese, Italian, Polish, and French isolates, while another isolate (MK848239) formed a separate minor clade within IIb. The isolate MK8482490, reported to infect bitter gourd in Pakistan, shared a minor clade with a Chinese isolate (KX884570). Recombination analysis revealed that the recently found ZYMV isolate (MK848239) is most likely a recombinant of Pakistani (MK848237) and Italian (MK956829) isolates, with a recombinant breakpoint between 266 and 814 nucleotide positions. Local isolate comparison and recombination detection may aid in the development of a breeding program that identifies resistant sources against recombinant isolates because the ZYMV is prevalent in a few cucurbit species grown in the surveyed areas and causes heavy losses and economic damage to the agricultural community.

Abstract:
The search for methanotrophs as plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) presents an important contribution to mitigating the impact of global warming by restoring the natural soil potential for consuming methane while benefiting plants during droughts. Our in silico simulations suggest that water, produced as a byproduct of methane oxidation, can satisfy the cell growth requirement. In addition to water, methanotrophs can produce metabolites that stimulate plant growth. Considering this, we proposed that applying methanotrophs as PGPR can alleviate the effect of droughts on crops, while stimulating atmospheric methane consumption. In this work, we isolated a series of methanotrophic communities from the rhizospheres of different crops, including Italian sweet pepper and zucchini, using an atmosphere enriched with pure methane gas, to determine their potential for alleviating drought stress in wheat plants. Subsequently, 23 strains of nonmethanotrophic bacteria present in the methanotrophic communities were isolated and characterized. We then analyzed the contribution of the methane-consuming consortia to the improvement of plant growth under drought conditions, showing that some communities contributed to increases in the wheat plants’ lengths and weights, with statistically significant differences according to ANOVA models. Furthermore, we found that the presence of methane gas can further stimulate the plant–microbe interactions, resulting in larger plants and higher drought tolerance.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Knowledge about the effect of chemical conditioners on the reduction of the deleterious effects caused by salinity on crops is of great importance for the expansion of the cultivation of vegetable crops such as zucchini in the semi-arid region of the Northeast. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide as a mitigator of salt stress on the gas exchange, production, and postharvest fruit quality of zucchini cultivated in a hydroponic system. The study was conducted in NFT-type (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system in a greenhouse, in Pombal — PB, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution - ECns (2.1 (control); 3.6; 5.1 and 6.6 dS m−1), and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0; 20; 40 and 60 μM), with three replicates. Nutrient solution with electrical conductivity above 2.1 dS m−1 caused a reduction in gas exchange and the total number of fruits of zucchini. An increase in nutrient solution salinity levels increased the total soluble solids content of the fruits and the initial fluorescence of zucchini. Under conditions of nutrient solution salinity above 2.1 dS m−1, hydrogen peroxide could not mitigate the effects of salt stress. Application of 20 μM of H2O2 when the plants were grown in a nutrient solution of 2.1 dS m−1 promoted higher total fruit weight and basal diameter of the fruits.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a plant growth regulator (PGR; Stimulate®) on the yield and quality of zucchini fruits from plants of the cultivar Caserta-Italiana grown under different salinity levels of the irrigation water (SLIW). A randomized block design was used, in a 2 × 6 factorial arrangement consisted of two SLIW (0.5 and 5.0 dS m-1) and six PGR application modes: imbibition of seeds for 8 h in distilled water (PGR-T1; Control); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 (PGR-T2); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 plus foliar application at 10 mL L-1 at the flowering stage (PGR-T3); imbibition of seeds for 8 h in PGR at 10 mL L-1 plus two foliar applications at the flowering stage and at 20 and 30 days after sowing (PGR-T4); foliar application at 10 mL L-1 at the flowering stage (PGR-T5); and two foliar applications at 10 mL L-1 at 20 and 30 days after sowing (PGR-T6). The SLIW affected differently the variables of the zucchini crops evaluated. The PGR application to plants under no salt stress (0.5 dS m-1) increased the solid soluble concentration and biomass accumulation of zucchini fruits. The PGR application as seed treatment and foliar application at the flowering stage increased the fruit yield of zucchini plants irrigated with saline water.

Abstract:
Abstract Among astral representations in Renaissance paintings and frescoes, a particular and very complex class stands out: that of Illustrated Horoscopes, that is, complete charts disguised under the cover of innocent pastoral landscapes or conventional mythological scenes. Two examples pertaining to this elusive class are proposed and analyzed in this article. The first is a Giorgionesque painting in the Royal Gallery in Dresden, the so-called Horoscope, that probably portrays the casting of a birth-chart for Ercole II d’Este, the son of Lucrezia Borgia, and at the same time a scene from the epic of Orlando and the Paladins. The second is Zucchi’s Assembly of the Gods, a copper panel painted for Ferdinando de Medici’s studiolo in the Roman Villa Medici, which arranges the planetary divinities in correlation to the zodiacal constellations, building the extraordinary nativity of the owner. Both astrological charts, albeit veiled and ambiguous by nature, are substantiated by internal signals, verified on the basis of contemporary horoscopes, and justified by the overall painting narrative.

Abstract:

Abstract:
When a traceability system takes place, either when mandatory or voluntary, many questions arise that need to be addressed and answered. One of the firsts concerns whether it introduces new costs with no gain in efficiency or, on the contrary, the system efficiency increases lowering costs and, as a consequence, market price of the good in hand. Among others, another issue that only rarely is addressed regards the effect of a price change on the final market. The objective of this paper was to simulate the effect on fresh Italian vegetables market of prices change due to a newer traceability procedure, focusing on early potato. Reasons why early potato was the main object of our study will be explained in detail later in the paper. Moreover, this study concerns a demand system estimation that has, as main goal, the measurement of own and cross price elasticities as well as expenditure elasticities. Such estimations are not strictly related with traceability because they measure any change in quantity demanded due to price changes due to any market perturbation. However, since early potato is experiencing a peculiar market and chain change in Italy, our simulation is meant to reason in terms of a “what if” approach, formally simulating the effect of any change in price due to an hypothesis of traceability system involved. In order to estimate a demand system, real household consumption data (3,000 observations) of a statistically representative sample of the Italian population of households was taken into account. Relevant measures of market variables were estimated by means of a Linear Almost Ideal Demand System implementing a large set of fresh vegetables: potato split in early and late, cabbage, salad, mushrooms, fruits vegetables, roots, asparagus, onion, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, zucchinis and others.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Near infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry have been coupled with chemometric exploratory methods in order to investigate ancient (pre-Roman/Roman) human bones from two different necropolises in Central-South Italy (Cavo degli Zucchi and Elea Velia). These findings have been investigated by principal component analysis and they have also been compared with ancient human bones from two Sudanese necropolises (Saggai and Geili). Samples coming from African and European necropolises, mainly differ in two aspects: the burial procedures and their historical period. The ritual applied in the European region involved cremation, while the one applied in the African necropolises did not. Bones from Italian sites (Cavo degli Zucchi and Elea Velia) are Pre-Roman/Roman while the others (from middle Nile) come from the Prehistoric, Meroitic, and Christian Sudanese age. Near infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric measures have been analysed either individually or by a mid-level data-fusion approach. Principal component analysis of the near infrared spectroscopy data allowed differentiation between burnt and unburnt samples, while from the scores plots extracted from the principal component analysis model based on the entire derived thermograms, it was possible to recognize the different clusters related to the various dating of samples. The data-fusion analysis led to considerations similar to those obtained from the model based on thermogravimetry data. Finally, instead of inspecting the entire thermogravimetry curves, principal component analysis was carried out on carbonates, total collagen and water losses only. In this case, the data-fusion approach has led to extremely interesting results; in fact, this model clearly shows that samples group in separate clusters in agreement with their age and the different burial rituals.

Abstract:
Abstract:
We evaluated the influence of storage conditions on the postharvest life of Italian zucchini fruits. Zucchinis with and without PVC coating film were evaluated at storage temperatures of 10 and 25 ºC. Evaluations were carried out at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 consecutive days. Zucchinis packed with PVC film at 10 ° C showed the lowest losses of fresh mass (0.84%), being the most efficient condition in reducing mass loss and maintaining the good aspects of the fruits. The treatments using 10ºC resulted in less loss of fruit firmness, regardless of packaging. Packaging with PVC at 25 ºC presented the lowest solids content at 20 days and increments up to 15 days of tritatable total acidity, with a subsequent decline at 20 days. Tritatable acidity increased until the end of the storage period in fruits without packaging. We found a variable pH in fruits without packing and a pH reduction in fruits with PCV packing regardless of temperature. Fruits stored at 10ºC with or without packing showed smaller biomass loss. Storing Italian zucchini fruits at low temperature or coated with PVC at low temperature decrease the activity of the enzymes of solubilization of the wall components, maintaining the turgor of the tissues and extending their useful life.

Abstract:
Abstract This research was carried out aiming at evaluating the effects of nitrate and ammonium ions on nutrient accumulation, biochemical components and yield of Italian zucchini (cv. Caserta) grown in a hydroponic system under salt stress conditions. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse utilizing an experimental design in randomized blocks, arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, with 4 replications. The treatments consisted of two forms of nitrogen (nitrate - NO3- and ammonium - NH4+) and 5 electrical conductivity levels of irrigation water (ECw) (0.5, 2.0, 3.5, 5.0 and 6.5 dS m-1). The analysis of the results indicated that supply of N exclusively in NH4+ form promotes greater damage to the leaf membrane and reduction in accumulation of macronutrients and higher Na+/K+, Na+/Ca++ and Na+/Mg++ ratios in the shoots of zucchini plants. Electrical conductivity of irrigation water above 2.0 dS m-1 reduces the accumulation of nutrients in shoot and yield of Italian zucchini plant. The toxicity of NH4+ under Italian zucchini plants overlap the toxicity of the salinity, since its fertilization exclusively with this form of nitrogen inhibits its production, being the NO3- form the most suitable for the cultivation of the species.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Semi-arid regions are subject to irregular rainfall distribution, leading to long periods of drought. Therefore, the only way to achieve and ensure production is through irrigation. However, in these regions, brackish water is predominant, requiring the adoption of irrigation strategies for better utilization. In this context, the objective of present study was to evaluate the production and fruit quality of Italian zucchini subjected to brackish water irrigation strategies during phenological stages. A completely randomized design with five treatments was used: S1 = low-salinity water (0.8 dS m-1) throughout the crop cycle; S2 = high-salinity water (3.0 dS m-1) only during germination and growth stages (0-11 DAS); S3 = high-salinity water (3.0 dS m-1) only during the pre-flowering stage (12-22 DAS); S4 = high-salinity water (3.0 dS m-1) only during the fruiting stage (23-42 DAS); S5 = high-salinity water (3.0 dS m-1) only during the harvesting stage (43-63 DAS), with eight replications. Irrigation with brackish water (3.0 dS m-1) during the pre-flowering and fruiting stages negatively affects the length and diameter of Italian zucchini fruits. The average fruit mass, skin thickness, production, and water use efficiency are reduced when zucchini plants were irrigated with water of higher electrical conductivity during the germination and initial growth stages, while the soluble solids content is increased. Under conditions of high salinity, it is possible to irrigate zucchini crop without loss of fruit quality and production throughout the harvesting stage.

Abstract:
The use of silicon in several crops has been shown to be beneficial because of its protection in the leaves, reducing the attack of pests and diseases, because of which there is a significant increase in the production of various crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the application of silicon drench with different application rates on the production of Italian zucchini plants of the Caserta grow crops conducted in an open environment. Different drenches of silicon were evaluated to prevent and reduce the incidence of pathogens, increasing productivity. The experiment was carried out in the garden of the Hospital São Roque in the city of Getúlio Vargas - RS, using the seeds of Italian zucchini of the Caserta grow crops, with different drenches of silicon. Weight, circumference and size of the fruits of zucchini were evaluated. Seed treatment with silicon, T3: Seed treatment with silicon + 1 silicon application via leaf (0.5L ha-1), T4: Seed treatment with silicon, T3: Seed treatment with silicon + 2 applications of foliar silicon (each application 0.25L ha-1), T5: 1 application of foliar silicon (0.5L ha-1) and T6: 2 applications of foliar silicon The response variables were submitted to the variation analysis and to the Duncan test at 5% of probability for the comparison of averages. the use of silicon in the treatment of seeds and a single foliar application, presented a reduction in fruit circumference, in relation to the plants that did not receive silicon application, being that these plants also presented a reduction in fruit length in relation to plants that received Si in the treatment of seeds and two foliar applications, with half a dose each.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Zucchini may present different responses to the presence of salts in its phenological phases, and the supply of potassium can interfere with assimilate allocation dynamics, maximizing production. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of brackish water irrigation strategies at different phenological stages under potassium fertilization on the yield and quality of italian zucchini fruits. A completely randomized design was adopted in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme, with the application of different irrigation strategies (S1, S2, S3 and S4) based on crop phenology using two electrical conductivities (ECw) (W1: 0.3 dS/m; W2: 2.6 dS/m). (S1= W1 throughout the crop cycle; S2= W1 up to flowering and early fruiting, and W2 during the full fruiting and harvesting phases; S3= W2 during flowering and early fruiting, and W1 during full fruiting and harvesting; S4= W1 up to flowering and early fruiting, W2 during the full fruiting phase, and W1 during harvesting), with three potassium doses (K1= 0, K2= 7.5, and K3= 15 g/plant), and four replications. Saline stress at any stage reduces fruit quality, in addition to resulting in lower productivity and water use efficiency. Doses of 50 (K2) and 100% (K3) potassium provided lower productivity and water use efficiency. Further analyses and research are required to determine the ideal dose for crops under similar conditions of this study.
