Abstract:
This paper describes the matrimonial and reproductive behaviour of Italians who migrated to Belgium after the Second World War. Migrants were either already married, or later became married, to other Italians. Among the children of migrants, men equally chose Italian or Belgian wives but women tended to prefer Italian partners. Italian-Belgian marriages were more frequent among the better educated groups. Family size is smaller among migrants marrying after migration and in heterogamous marriages. Significant differences in birth intervals are found when marriage occurred before or after migra

Each society has myths about the successful adaptation of former migrants. Historians need to deconstruct these myths by dealing with the imagined boundaries between “indigenous” and “foreign” people that give way to them. This essay does so by comparing how children of Polish interwar immigrants and children of Italian postwar immigrants came to be seen as insiders in the Belgian Limburg mining region. Oral testimonies, associational records, and population data reveal that Poles achieved the status of industrious, adapted people around 1960, due to the equal promotion of Polish and indigenou

Abstract:
The article analyzes the linguistic landscape of Slavia Friulana on the example of the towns of Cividale del Friuli, San Pietro al Natizone, Lusevera, Prossenicco, etc., where the Slovenian ethnic minority lives compactly in a Romance environment. The author pays special attention to the Slovenian language and its presence in the region – in cultural centers, churches, memorial epigraphies, and road signs. The Slovenian trace can also be found in the names of traditional pastries of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region – gubana, gubanza, as the word itself is borrowed from Slovenian into Italian.

Abstract:
In recent years, the scope of girlhood studies has included the investigation of a wide range of cultural artifacts and media that shape, reflect, and challenge society's prescriptive notions of girlhood. These artifacts include podcasts, girlfestos, fan fiction and, as this special issue highlights, comics. As Nicoletta Mandolini, Lisa Maya Quaianni Manuzzato, and Eva Van de Wiele, the guest editors of this special issue demonstrate, comics have emerged as a particularly rich and multifaceted medium in which to explore the complexities of girl culture, identity formation, and representation.

This paper illustrates the results of a corpus-driven analysis on the translation of realia in subtitles from Italian into Dutch. In Translation Studies, realia are generally defined as words and expressions with culture-specific meaning. In the present paper, we focus on a particular type of realia, namely honorifics. The analysis of realia is part of a broader research project on the circulation and reception of Italian films in Flanders (Belgium) (Caniato forthcoming). This research employs a bilingual parallel corpus, duly aligned and annotated, and draws on six films (70,910 Italian words

Foreign languages are commonly used in advertising, because it is generally thought that they attract consumers’ attention. Compared to English, Italian is only rarely chosen by European advertisers. Precisely because of their low frequency, Italian words have a higher chance to capture and hold the consumers’ attention. Although foreign languages are widespread in advertising, the effectiveness of their use has not been studied extensively. In our study on print advertisements we compare the effectiveness of a foreign language slogan (Italian) relative to a slogan in the local language (Dutch

In this article, the authors analyze the allowances for corporate capital equity ('ACE') currently adopted in some countries. In the economic literature ACE properties are well known: ACE makes corporation income tax systems neutral with respect to the financing options of firms, since this incentive addresses the tax-induced debt bias by granting an allowance for the cost of equity, normally consisting in the notional return on equity invested by firms. In the last two decades some European countries implemented ACE-like measures, but abolished them after a few years, that is, Italy (with DIT

Abstract This paper examines an unusual heptagonal floor plan drawing held by the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The drawing is identified as an early design plan (ca. 1606) for the heptagonal Marian Pilgrimage church at Scherpenheuvel/Montaigu (Belgium). After describing the drawing in detail and attributing it to Wenzeslas Cobergher, the paper interprets the ground plan against the backdrop of the design process of the domed Sanctuary as well as in the broader context of Scherpenheuvel’s transformation into a symbolic and programmatic Pilgrimage ensemble by the sovereigns of the Spanish Netherl

GEOS was formed in 1973 from several European groups (French, Italian, Spanish and Belgian). All the members of GEOS have the same aims: to observe variable stars and to analyse their observations themselves.Other objects are also observed by GEOS: artifical satellites and minor planets, in particular minor-planet occultations. Observations are treated statistically and the procedures allow accidental, and – if there are several observers of the same star – systematic, errors to be corrected, thus improving the accuracy of the results and the light-curves.

To this end, Russia commenced a process of rapprochement with France, resulting in the signing of an agreement in 1859. However, having secured Russian neutrality during the 1859 Italian War, France was reluctant to honour reciprocal commitments supporting Russian efforts to abrogate the terms of the 1856 Treaty.
