Full textThe present work aims to describe the evolution of Boccaccio’s “mistakes” from 16th century on through the use of different approaches (namely historical, ecdotic, linguistic, and stylistic). The dissertation starts with a chapter divided in three sections: the first two sections deal with the perception of Boccaccio’s model in the linguistic controversy characterizing the 16th century. The third section analyses how the syntax of the Decameron came to be considered incorrect by scholars of the time.I will concentrate on the commentaries by Ruscelli, Borghini, Salviati and Beni. The second chapter is about the manuscript tradition of the Decameron and on the most recent ecdotic theories formulated by modern philologists on the issue. In the third chapter I focus on such linguistic phenomena as the repetition of “che”, para-hypotaxis, “che” followed by the infinitive, and the coordination between dependent clauses with both finite and nonfinite verbs. In this part of my dissertation, I make use of a comparative method, bringing together Old Italian and Old French. In the last chapter I intend to reflect on the presence (and absence) of these linguistic phenomena in the Decameron, in order to understand Boccaccio’s writing choices, and taking into account other elements such as elocution and the different diegetic levels acting in the novellas

Full textThe essay focuses on headed relative clauses in Old Italian assuming both a syntactic and textual perspective. Such research is based on a corpus of Tuscans texts in prose (XIIIth- XIVth centuries). The corpus contains also various texts translated from the Old French, so that make possible a comparison between Old Italian and Old French in this syntactic domain, the essay presents two sections. Other than a discussion on the most important contributions to the study of of the relative clauses, the first section deals the syntactic features of these structures in the ancient prose. Analysis tries to show the behaviour and the distinctive aspects of each relativization strategies, with respect to syntactic properties and communicative needs. The second section is reserved to the investigation of the functions fulfilled by the relative clauses, which can draw different effects (semantic, textual and pragmatic). Description of the occurrences founded in the corpus applies a tripartite categorization, based on the distinction between restrictive, predicative and non restrictives relatives

Full textThe epistemic verbs studied herein have been distributed into two categories (verbs of knowledge and verbs of belief), each defined by a syntactic criterion and a semantic one. Concerning the direct use, the relevant feature is the modal value, provided the "objective truth" and the "subjective truth" should be discriminated from each other. As to the other uses, it is the enunciative value - i. E. The speaker's attitude - which is discriminative. In both situations, the notion of a universe of belief enables an unequivocal as well as consonant to the linguistic process description to be expressed. The evidential value also plays a part in the description of the epistemic verbs. We can then establish that the divergence between middle and modern French is rather unimportant. The assumption of a biunivocal connection between the types of sources and the values of truth of the proposition in the subject's universe of belief is to be banished

Full textOpposition of the shifters ci ici, ça, là, iluec according to +- sui-referential polarity. Sui-referential shifter ci ici is the only one to be auto-saturated; the other "lacunary" shifters, presenting gaps, will be referentially saturated either by anaphora or by an act of pointing (deixis). Two of these adverbs, ci, ici and là, are not strictly spatial but, in fact, have the property to represent the whole of the situational context in which a proposition can be emmitted and valued
; Paris, Le Petit Laurens (s.d.)." However, we conserve the three first printed editions : Lyon, Jean de Vingle, 1496 ; Paris, « pour » Antoine Vérard, s.d. ; Paris, Le Petit Laurens, s.d. The aim of the thesis is to provide the first critical edition of this prose from the exemplary of Paris from Vérard’s edition, preserved in the BnF.
