The past decade has seen great progress in research on large scale mapping and perception in static environments. Real world perception requires handling uncertain situations with multiple possible interpretations: e.g. changing appearances, dynamic objects, and varying motion models. These aspects of perception have been largely avoided through the use of heuristics and preprocessing. This thesis is motivated by the challenge of including discrete reasoning directly into the estimation process. We approach the problem by using Conditional Linear Gaussian Networks (CLGNs) as a generalization o

Members of these two sub-disciplines collaborate regularly, but due to differing resource requirements, and largely incompatible spheres of knowledge, cooperation is often impeded by miscommunication and delays. To reduce the model design time, and provide a platform for more efficient experimental analysis, a rapid iterative model design method is proposed. In this thesis a new robustness analysis for model-based Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is presented. ILC is a method of control for systems that are required to track a reference signal in a repetitive manner. The repetitive nature of such a system allows for the use of past information such that the control system iteratively learns control signals that give high levels of tracking. ILC algorithms that learn in a monotonic fashion are desirable as it implies that tracking performance is improved at each iteration. Most promising is the use of so called “iterative reconstruction” which is a post image acquisition step combining a software/hardware configuration that allows the images acquired to be processed more efficiently, eliminating noise which increases with low dose techniques. Such patterns arise in many areas, as for example the Atomic Force Microscopy, where fast and smooth reference signals are required. In order to successfully track the above mentioned references, which are composed of amplitude and frequency-varying sinusoidal sig

Abstract:
Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has shown great potential in the reduction of uncertainties of proton ranges and low energy photon cross section estimation used in radiation therapy planning. The work presented herein investigated three contributions for advancing DECT applications. 1) A linear and separable two-parameter DECT, the basis vector model (BVM) was used to estimate proton stopping power. Compared to other nonlinear two-parameter models in the literature, the BVM model shows a comparable accuracy achieved for typical human tissues. This model outperforms other nonlinear model

Abstract:
An Airborne Mobile Aerosol Lidar (AMALi) was constructed and built at Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Potsdam, Germany for the lower tropospheric aerosol and cloud research under tough arctic conditions. The system was successfully used during two AWI airborne field campaigns, ASTAR 2004 and SVALEX 2005, performed in vicinity of Spitsbergen in the Arctic. The novel evaluation schemes, the Two-Stream Inversion and the Iterative Airborne Inversion, were applied to the obtained lidar data. Thereby, calculation of the particle extinction and backscatter coefficient

Abstract:
The successful design, implementation, deployment, and use of mobile software applications is rare. While many mobile apps are developed, few succeed. This design science research project builds and evaluates CrashApp™, a mobile application that connects lawyers and clients before, during, and after car accidents. The effective, widespread use of this app depends on satisfying the needs of three groups of stakeholders – the end-users (clients), the owners (lawyers), and the software developers. The research objective is to investigate the key differences among the three sta

Full text
Abstract:
In this work a steady-state model of a simple vapor compression refrigeration cycle is presented. All the fundamental components of this system are modeled separately in order to consider them as black boxes that take inputs and convert them into output variables. The heat exchangers are treated as a set of multiple zones, identified by the refrigerant's state, connected in series, in which the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is constant. A non-linear system of equations is obtained applying the energy balances and the ε-NTU method for each zone in the heat exchangers. A study on the HTC corre
