Abstract:
This study develops a methodology to train and apply a hybrid stacked discrete choice model for airline itinerary choice. This stacked model framework includes a data-driven component (i.e., gradient boosting machines) as well as a theory-driven component (i.e., utility maximization using generalized extreme value models). The resulting ensemble model combines attractive features of each, including the ability to conform to complex nonlinear relationships among itinerary characteristics, as well as the ability to leverage an analyst’s understanding of travel behavior tendencies and the natural relationship among itineraries. Using a real industry dataset containing purchase information for approximately 10 million air travelers, it is demonstrated that the resulting model outperforms either the gradient boosting or utility maximization modeling paradigm alone in forecasting air traveler choice behavior. Implementation of this model can be achieved using efficient open source tools including XGBoost and Larch, and requires relatively modest additional effort by an analyst above and beyond the effort to use either tool alone.

Abstract:
The application of a mixed logit approach using stated-preference survey data to the development of itinerary choice models is described. The models include the effects on itinerary choices of airline, airport, aircraft type, fare, access time, flight time, scheduled arrival time, and on-time performance. The empirical results demonstrate the importance of explicitly accounting for traveler preference heterogeneities by using segmentation by trip purpose, interaction effects involving frequent flier status, and random parameter specifications. Explicitly including preference heterogeneity by using the mixed logit specification results in significant statistical improvements and important coefficient differences as compared with using a standard fixed-parameter logit model. The calculated marginal rates of substitution show the relative importance that travelers assign to key service variations among itineraries. All service features that were included in the model had significant values to travelers, and the values were affected, as would be expected, by the traveler's frequent flier status. Although current reservation and ticketing services provide information to prospective travelers on most of these itinerary features, most services do not report on-time performance, which, however, can be an important selection criterion for travelers.

<p class="Body">A recommender system is an approach to give an appropriate solu-tion to a particular problem. This helps in recognising the pattern or behaviour of a user to suggest future possible likes of the user. Nowa-days people like to travel during their spare time, it has become a rigid task to decide where to go. This paper represents a customised recommender system to help users in destining their itinerary. A model is designed to suggest the best places to visit in Rome. A questionnaire was prepared to get information about users interest during their travel. The model generates the best five places to visit with respect to the choice picked by the user. The top five places for each category will be displayed to the user and the user was asked to pick a starting point for the itinerary. Then the model generates another set off a filtered list of places to enhance their travel experi-ence. It includes displaying the top 5 restaurants to visit during their travel.</p>

Abstract James Buchanan came to Italy in 1955 as Fulbright visiting professor until July 1956 and made his research at the library of the Bank of Italy. He visited the University of Pavia, a quite famous center for public finance studies, still directed by Benvenuto Griziotti. On that occasion I became acquainted with professor Buchanan and our longlasting friendship started soon. On his itinerary from the political economy perspective to public choice that James Buchanan did undertake, after the Italian 1955-56 visit, he has written: «After Italy I was prepared, intellectually, psychologically and emotionally to join in an entrepreneurial venture with my Virginia colleague Warren Nutter, a venture aimed at bringing renewed emphasis to ‘political economy’ in a classical sense. And from these beginnings, the more directed research spin-off into the ‘economics of politics’ initiated jointly with my colleague Gordon Tullock, now seems a natural progression»

Abstract:
Recent developments of information technology have increased market’s competitive pressure and products’ prices turned to be paramount factor for customers’ choices. These challenges influence traditional revenue management models and force them to shift from quantity-based to price-based techniques and incorporate individuals’ decisions within optimization models during pricing process. Multinomial logit model is the simplest and most popular discrete choice model, which suffers from an independence of irrelevant alternatives limitation. Empirical results demonstrate inadequacy of this model for capturing choice probability in the itinerary share models. The nested logit model, which appeared a few years after the multinomial logit, incorporates more realistic substitution pattern by relaxing this limitation. In this paper, a model of game theory is developed for two firms which customers choose according to the nested logit model. It is assumed that the real-time inventory levels of all firms are public information and the existence of Nash equilibrium is demonstrated. The firms adapt their prices by market conditions in this competition. The numerical experiments indicate decreasing firm’s price level simultaneously with increasing correlation among alternatives’ utilities error terms in the nests.

Abstract:
This study presents insights into the influence of the characteristics of tourism itineraries on tourist purchasing behavior. We adopted data between 1 August 2019 and 30 November 2019 from the Qunar, the biggest online tourism platform in China and 4366 samples on travel itineraries were obtained. The ordinary least square regression (OLS) method was used. Controlling for product-related and channel-related factors, we demonstrate that in terms of tourism destination choice, outbound tourism products attract an increased number of tourists; in terms of the types of travel, private travel has replaced group travel to become the majority of the tourism market; in terms of the length of travel, mid-term travel (4–6 days) is the first choice, outnumbering short-term and long-term ones; price promotions such as discount for early decision, multi-person price reduction and membership prices significantly lead to increased sales; online reviews also have great impact on tourist purchasing behavior. In sum, this study uses a unique data set to reveal the influence of online tourism product characteristics on sales and provide potential guidance of the marketing strategy in response to consumer behavior for the online tourism industry.

Abstract:
An urban rail transit (URT) system is operated according to relatively punctual schedule, which is one of the most important constraints for a URT passenger’s travel. Thus, it is the key to estimate passengers’ train choices based on which passenger route choices as well as flow distribution on the URT network can be deduced. In this paper we propose a methodology that can estimate individual passenger’s train choices with real timetable and automatic fare collection (AFC) data. First, we formulate the addressed problem using Manski’s paradigm on modelling choice. Then, an integrated framework for estimating individual passenger’s train choices is developed through a data-driven approach. The approach links each passenger trip to the most feasible train itinerary. Initial case study on Shanghai metro shows that the proposed approach works well and can be further used for deducing other important operational indicators like route choices, passenger flows on section, load factor of train, and so forth.

Abstract:
Under the condition that ticket fare for high-speed train could fluctuate around a benchmark price in China, aimed at predicting how the passengers will distribute among different trains given a ticket fare, the passenger flow assignment method for high-speed trains is studied. Different from the classical researches on the passenger flow assignment, by introducing a variable that represents the value of time, this research allows passengers to make their personalized choice between the principles of time minimization and expense minimization, so as to demonstrate how the passengers holding different time values respond to each ticket fare scheme. An equilibrium passenger flow assignment model based on personalized choice is built and an improved Monte-Carlo random simulation algorithm is designed for solving the model. The actual ticket sale data for Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway are used to verify the feasibility of the proposed model and algorithm. The passenger flow assignment results under various fare schemes show how the distribution of passenger flow changes with the adjustment of ticket fare.

Buruli ulcer is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. It begins with a lump, swelling, skin plate and progresses to severe ulceration and disabling sequelae . For over a decade, it is a real public health problem in Côte d'Ivoire. The institutions responsible for the fight against this disease advocate for patients in endemic areas early case detection and immediate recourse to specialized care centers. Despite this recommendation, the therapeutic itinerary of patients is multimodal. This study aims to analyze the therapeutic itinerary plural sick of Buruli ulcer and to determine the factors that justify the paradoxes and contradictions between state recommendations and behaviors of patients. It took place in three support centers in the health district of yamoussoukro. In a qualitative approach, with observation checklists, interview guides, this study was conducted with 50 patients, 18 healers in the care center and 4 traditional healers. Patients rely successively, alternatively or additionally to the African medicine and care center. Traditional medicine is the first therapeutic choice for most patients. The proximity of traditional healer, cultural beliefs and representations related to the disease, the constraints of hospitalization, ignorance of the disease make account plural therapeutic itineraries sick of Buruli ulcer. The patients do not adhere to early detection and immediate access to health care centers. Free medical care for Buruli ulcer is fraught with difficulties because of patient behaviors. The hospital management does not consider the social environment of patients and the relationship between the disease and culture that influence the therapeutic itinerary of patients.

Abstract:
Abstract Airport accessibility is an important factor for airport choice and therefore also for airport competition. When air passengers choose an itinerary, they reflect on the transport chain from door to door. Therefore, factors affecting the traveller’s decision for a particular option go beyond the price and quality of air services from airport to airport. The decision for or against a particular air service and a particular airport is to a certain extent dependent on the accessibility of the airport. The aim of the article is to present the preliminary research of factors which influence choice of transport mode used in order to reach Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW). The hypothesis of the paper is that the most common transport modes to WAW is private transport. The data were collected based on survey distributed within passengers in May 2015. The results show that there is a relation between flight destination from WAW and distance from the point of origin to airport and also between kind of traveller and transport mode used by his/her. There is also the conclusion that the most common transport modes from and to the airport in Europe is used very rarely in Warsaw.

Abstract:
Throughout history, humankind has been constantly traveling for various reasons. Highway transportation is often preferred for these trips. However, traveling by highway is a tiring and time-consuming form of transportation and it is relatively more difficult and complicated compared to other transportation alternatives (seaway and airline transportations). Because people who travel should rest at regular intervals to meet their physical or physiological needs. Rest areas are critical places to meet such needs while traveling. However, people encounter many different resting places along the travel itinerary. The fact that there are many places that can be used to meet their needs, confronts consumers with the decision problem. In this study, it was aimed to determine the factors affecting the preferences of consumers among the many resting places encountered and the importance levels of these factors on the resting place preference. The data were evaluated by using the widely used Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method of decision theory and it was determined that the most important factor affecting consumer choice was the “services” provided at the resting area.

Abstract:
This study investigates trip-level destination choice behavior of users of the dockless bike sharing service (DBS). A random parameter latent segmentation-based logit (RPLSL) model is developed utilizing the DBS users’ trip itinerary data for Kelowna, Canada. The RPLSL model captures multi-dimensional heterogeneity such as inter-segment and intra-segment heterogeneity. The model is developed at a micro-spatial resolution which is defined as the bicycle analysis zone. One of the key features of this study is to test the interdependencies between the origin and destination of a trip using their built environment attributes. Model results suggest that segment 1 is more likely to include trips originating from the urban neighborhoods; whereas, segment 2 includes trips originating from the suburban neighborhoods. The parameter estimation results reveal that DBS trips are more likely to be destined to locations with longer length of cycle tracks, higher employment density, and that are closer to the Central Business District and bus stops (i.e., within 500 m). The model confirms multi-layer heterogeneity. For instance, trips originating from the urban areas in segment 1 are more likely to be destined to destinations within 500 m of the designated bike return sites (i.e., havens). In contrast, shorter trips originating in suburban areas in segment 2 show a negative relationship. Interestingly, a bike-friendly environment might increase the attractiveness of destinations closer to havens, even for the trips originating in suburban areas. The findings of this study will assist in developing policies and infrastructure investment decision making at the destination locations to promote DBS usage.

Abstract:
Introduction. One of the main objectives, pursued by the information analysis support extended to smoke divers, is the preparation of indoor routes. Technical capabilities, represented by advanced remote monitoring systems, provide a fire extinguishing manager with the necessary information about the point of fire origin and mathematical tools allow to predict fire spreading characteristics. The goal of this work is to develop an algorithm for the preparation of an optimal indoor route for smoke divers to support management decisions in the event of fire. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to develop the theoretical framework and implement it in a software programme.Theoretical foundations. The theory of cellular automata is employed in this paper to simulate the routes of smoke divers inside a building. A cellular automaton with a Moore neighborhood is applied. We use differential equations, similar to the Kolmogorov equations, to monitor the fire parameters. Results and discussions. A modified wave algorithm was developed to determine the optimal indoor route. The software tool was applied to simulate the route of gas divers. Coefficients of importance were applied in the process of mathematical modeling; they took account of the prioritized work to be performed by smoke divers.Conclusions. The results of the study suggest that the algorithm allows to identify the optimal itinerary, thereby enabling the decision maker, responsible for sending teams of smoke divers to the work performance location, to make a reasonable choice of the point of entry for the personnel and machinery, as well as their itinerary inside the building.

Abstract:
In an 1856 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine the literary critic and biographer T. A. Richards conducted his readers through a house tour of famous literary residences in the Hudson River Valley. His itinerary and choice of authors were typical of the time. By using the picturesque vocabulary common to antebellum travel literature, Richards offered a vicarious glimpse into the domestic arrangements of successful writers and artists. He painted an edenic picture of gentility in the midst of the Hudson Valley's natural splendor. We read, for example, of the “broad lawns and slopes of Placentia,” the Hyde Park estate of the novelist James Kirke Paulding; and the “mysterious evening shadow” of Susan Warner's home on Constitution Island, just off West Point. “Dearest to us of all,” Richards added, was Sunnyside, Washington Irving's renovated Dutch farmhouse at Tarrytown. These elegant and vaguely romantic properties seemed utterly appropriate for the literary elite of the region. Like Hawthorne's Old Manse, they were architectural spaces indelibly suited to their masters' talents and temperaments.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a study that demonstrates an effective use of the Web as a tool to increase motivation and thus promote reading and writing skills in Spanish as well as a deeper sense of the culture of the Spanish speaking world. In the study, thirty students of second year Spanish at the University of New South Wales were required to prepare an itinerary for a trip to a Spanish speaking country of their choice using the WWW as the only resource. In general our findings regarding improved language skills were consistent with the literature: an increase of vocabulary, more use of references, more student initiated interactions and greater interactivity in the classroom amongst students were observed. There was, however, one aspect, linguistic accuracy, in which improvement was not greatly noted. The data collected confirms that a task-oriented Web based course can increase the motivation of students, improve the scope of their reading, and enhance their perception of the target culture, all with a great effect on range of language explored, learned and re-processed, but a much lesser effect on the accuracy of written language produced.

Abstract:
Among the neglected tropical disease, Buruli ulcer (BU) is a real public health problem in Côte d'Ivoire. Facing this pathology, international and national institutions to combat advocate for people in endemic areas early detection and immediate use of support centers at the first signs. However, patients continue to attend late care centers with large ulcerative lesions. Therefore, healing requires a long-term hospitalization that requires medical and surgical treatment. The main objective of this study is to analyze the factors that change the therapeutic route of BU patients and constraints socio - economic issues related to their hospitalisation. This is a qualitative and quantitative study. We used the technique of reasoned choice. It covered 55 patients met at the Djekanou care center in the Toumodi Health District. Data were collected through structured and semi - structured interviews based on questionnaires, individual interview guides and focus groups. A significant proportion of patients with BU are children and adolescents. The sick are accompanied by a parent who takes care of them. Awareness campaigns, community health workers, television and radio did not really help to change the therapeutic itinerary of patients. The patients encountered testify to the ineffectiveness of traditional care. The hospitalization of patients is marked by difficulties of several kinds.

Abstract:
However, in the last 20 years, we are witnessing a decrease in the rates of young people enrolling in higher education areas of science and technology in general, and especially, in the agro-food industry degrees. Consequently, this paper aims to analyze the main factors that influence students when choosing the degrees of engineering and science but in this particular field. With this purpose, a personal survey was used on a sample of 430 students who had chosen these degrees at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Based on the collected information, a factorial analysis allowed the detection of four relevant factors in the choice of the agro-food field degree: origin of the student (place of residence and type of school); the moment of the decision in which the student chooses the future degree (during or after high school, before or after EBAU), the previous academic itinerary (technological, health, social sciences or arts); and their personal motivations (vocational, family tradition, affinity or by discard). This research aims to clarify the factors that influence the choice of this specific higher education degree in order to help academic counselors and researchers, as well as psycho-pedagogues to support their function.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of the study was to discover the relative importance of influencing factors toward booking a cruise vacation. Based on a review of literature, this study focused on exploring the relative importance of six influential factors in cruise customers’ decision-making process: cruise vacation price, cruise duration, distance from the cruise port, itineraries, environmental friendliness of cruise line and cruise online reviews. Design/methodology/approach The complexity of cruise customers’ decision-making process for involving these six attributes with several levels was examined with choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis. CBC was selected due to its realistic approach to purchase decisions, in the form of trade-offs. The online survey collected data anonymously. The survey was distributed through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (Mturk) platform. The sample consisted of 450 cruise customers, who had experienced a cruise vacation before. Findings The findings of the study showed that online reviews were the most influential attribute for cruise customers in their cruise decision, followed very closely by the environmental friendliness of the cruise line. The next influential factor was the duration of the cruise vacation, which was followed by distance from the cruise port, cruise itinerary and cruise vacation price. The best and the worst cruise vacation profiles were generated based on the CBC analysis. Practical implications The findings of this study provide some insights with regard to cruise customers’ importance about influencing factors when deciding on a cruise vacation. Originality/value The research provides insides in understanding the influential factors at the last stage of cruise customers’ decision-making process. In this regard, cruise industry can pay more attention in promoting the attributes of a cruise offer as influential factors. Additionally, the findings of this study contribute to the general knowledge about cruise customers’ decision-making process.

Abstract:
The theory of affections has seen a renewed conceptual interest both in the role played in the formulation of power structures in modernity, which remains important in understanding the present form of Nation State, and in the possibility to formulate a new interpretation of the social relationship useful to surpass the classical psychological lectures. We aim here to reconsider an affect which in contemporary language is tinged with theological nuances: the affect of fides. We can translate the word using the modern terms of trust and belief, but also loyalty. The choice of this particular affect is due to the centrality that, in our view, it occupies in modern contract theories, and to its ability to reflect, with its multiple conceptual stratification, different perspectives and political proposals. In order to clarify the terms of this discussion, we will henceforth use the term fides, alongside with different meanings which overlap within it, to illustrate two different and divergent proposals that have emerged during the seventeenth century. We consider, in particular, the thought of Spinoza opposed to the social contract theories by Hobbes in order to understand the modern theoretical break with previous political concepts; in particular, we will briefly analyze the different conceptions of Societas civilis that emerge from this division. The background of these considerations is the analysis of modern philosophy‘s use of the theory of affections. The XVII century witnessed the rise of social contract theory. It draws on the concept of the individual, conceived as isolated from others, located in the original state of nature (pre-social), unable to develop its rational part. It is therefore a victim of its own passions, but even more so those of others. The dominant sentiments emerging in Hobbes‘ Leviathan are therefore those of awe and fear. They derive from the constant uncertainty of one‘s power and strength; the uncertainty of being able to maintain everyone‘s domination over others and thus to suffer in turn the others‘ power. From the necessity to control these emotions in a rational way emerges the contractual proposal to transfer the power to an authority (singular or plural) whom all subjects must obey. Philosophical movements such as neostoicism and philosophical works such as Les passions de l‘ame by Descartes, testify in their „rationalist“ proposal the need to keep a constant control over the passions. They open the way for the famous dialectics of reason and passion, a central theme throughout the Enlightenment. This need to dominate the passions arouses from the complex Cartesian metaphysical theory and from its conception of the individual always split between body and soul, reason and instinct. These two models are the ones which have prevailed; this conception of individual and society and this approach to the passions still dominate common sense when we talk about human affections. The paper follows an itinerary across three authors of the modern age. At first we try to delineate the theory of affection by Descartes, and the birth of the dichotomy of body and soul through the focus of two of the most important works by Descartes: Méditations métaphysiques and Traité sur les passions de l‘âme. Then, by analyzing the works of Hobbes (Leviathan), and Spinoza (Ethic and Political treatise) we will describe in which terms the subject carrying his affective baggage interacts in a political space.

Abstract:
Some physical implications involved in a new concept, termed the "quantum protectorate" (QP), are developed and discussed. This is done by considering the idea of quantum protectorate in the context of quantum theory of magnetism. It is suggested that the difficulties in the formulation of quantum theory of magnetism at the microscopic level, that are related to the choice of relevant models, can be understood better in the light of the QP concept. We argue that the difficulties in the formulation of adequate microscopic models of electron and magnetic properties of materials are intimately related to dual, itinerant and localized behaviour of electrons. We formulate a criterion of what basic picture describes best this dual behaviour. The main suggestion is that quasi-particle excitation spectra might provide distinctive signatures and good criteria for the appropriate choice of the relevant model.

Abstract:
This article is a kind of journey through the poetic work of Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II – a wandering that is ascetic, yet extremely rich – in the footsteps of an outsider, a person free from our native historical and cultural context, and hence open to the unlimited possibilities of interpretation. This work shows the universal character of Karol Wojtyła’s poetic output; it emphasises new elements in the perception of that poetry, while showing the meaning of the verses in a different light, verses still relevant and invariably addressed to man, who is also (and maybe especially) struggling with eternal dilemmas today. The early literary works already contained two profound dimensions: the Slavic soul and intellectual classicism, which would also become a feature of John Paul II’s talent for ecumenical communication and his theological vision of the Church. In the transition from youthful sonnets to hymns, we can notice not only the stylistic development and depth of the message, but, above all, a move towards conscious religiousness, contemplation, towards the priesthood, a move which was born in the very dramatic time of the Second World War. As a priest, on the other hand, his poetic choices were marked by a desire to understand the condition of man and to see God’s love for His creation. This contemplation becomes increasingly more like a prayer, and dialogue is born out of prayer. Karol Wojtyła’s literary work appears as a story about his own inner experience and reveals a spiritual anthropology.

Abstract:
Abstract In the second half of the 19th century, when Oskar Kolberg conducted his folkloristic and ethnographic work, folk song and music were still alive and, to a great extent, functioned in their natural culture context. However, already at that time, and especially in the last decades of the century, gradual changes were taking place within folk tradition. Those changes were brought about by industrialization and factors in the development of urban civilization, which varied in intensity depending on the region. Folk music was also influenced by those changes and they themselves were further fuelled by the final (third) Partition of Poland by Austria, Prussia and Russia, declared in 1795 and lasting till the end of World War I. Oskar Kolberg noticed and described changes in the musical landscape of villages and little towns of the former Polish Republic in the 19th century, as well as in the choice of instruments. To be quite precise, musical instruments are not featured as a separate subject of his research, but various references, though scattered, are quite numerous, and are presented against a social, cultural and musical background, which provides an opportunity to draw certain conclusions concerning folk music instrumental practice. However, changes in the makeup of folk music ensembles resulted in the disappearance of traditional instruments, which were being replaced by the newer, factory-produced ones. This process worried Kolberg and he noticed its symptoms also in a wider, European context, where bagpipes or dulcimers were being supplanted not only by “itinerant orchestras” but also by barrel organs or even violins. Writing about our country, Poland, he combined a positive opinion on the subject of improvised and expressive performance of folk violinists with a negative one on clarinet players and mechanical instruments. Summing up, the musical landscape of Polish villages and both small and larger towns was definitely influenced in the 19th century by the symptoms of phenomena which much later acquired a wider dimension and were defined as globalization and commercialization. Sensing them, Oskar Kolberg viewed the well-being of the traditional culture heritage with apprehension.

Abstract:
Abstract In the framework of linguistic or national minorities in Europe, the Friulian case can be considered, from several points of view, an exemplary one. This applies not only to the historical development of its minoritisation and to the steadiness of its claims to recognition and protection but also to the way, during the last decades, that the community has been trying to promote its language and concretely affirm those fundamental rights related to the use of the language itself, through laws and actions of language policy and planning. The contribution aims to present the Friulian case, illustrating the evolution of legislation and policies and identifying their impact on the language itself, its formal and informal use, its social presence, the community’s legitimation, self-representation and delimitation, and the establishment of language rights. It is an interesting path with noteworthy results. It is also a discontinuous itinerary, with ups and downs, in which most of the protection rules (Law 482/1999 and the Regional ones 15/1996 and 29/2007) have not found real application. Therefore, the language is still excluded from several fundamental contexts and, despite some encouraging data coming from the most recent sociolinguistic research, its public use and its presence in education and in the media are still victims of old prejudices, which inspire the contradictory choices of political and institutional decision-makers. Friulian is at the same time a resistant and emerging language and a strongly minoritized one.

Abstract:
AbstractIn W. Burkert's Orientalizing Revolution, itinerant craftsmen and other specialists moving from East to West are the primary vector for the movement of Near Eastern ideas and practices to the Greek world in the archaic period. In this model, the incentive for movement is a choice between western economic freedom and the despotism of eastern palace-centered economies. When set in the context of theoretical debates over the ancient economy, and particularly the important studies of C. Grottanelli and C. Zaccagnini on the mobility of specialists, Burkert's model appears to accept that modern divisions between eastern and western economies were also salient for ancient actors. This supposition is tested through a reexamination of Herodotus' story of the Greek doctor Democedes and the golden fetters awarded to him by Darius (Histories 3.125, 129-137). Though Herodotus uses the symbol of "golden fetters" as a focal point for the construction of cultural difference, parallel Greek and Egyptian evidence of specialists in royal service suggests that such gifts could also function as cross-cultural prestige items, and that the royal economies in which they circulated could facilitate and even stimulate the adoption and dissemination of notionally foreign ideas and practices.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the character of Yoruba video viewers, the style of marketing and the politics of choice in Ogbomọṣọ, a Nigerian town on the northern fringe of Ọyọ State. As an itinerant trading community Ogbomọṣọ is a place where production is not the source of wealth; instead, big wealth is always repatriated from outside, raising a doubt, stemming from its largely invisible productive base, about human ability and achievements. The vocation of selling videos is growing, even if it is not successful yet as a money-making enterprise. But the business itself, by the attractiveness of its market culture, seems to be inviting gradual, systematic and progressive patronage. The business attracts customers, especially the young, by its guarantee of choice and a promise of negotiable power. Consumers can pick and choose among a variety of goods. They are free to collect or construct their relationships with the marketers, depending on what emphasis they place on cost, quality and quantity of goods. For the people of Ogbomọṣọ, whose craving for freedom and success have taken them far afield into other countries, the market enacts a self that can play many roles. The argument is that a local ideology of marketing promotes the sale of videos in their productive contexts and that those who buy them within those contexts act within the framework of the same ideology. Videos deal with knowledge and the various levels of its acquisition. The producers, the marketers and the consumers are engaged in a consideration of the political economy of their time. And, as a form of brokerage, the videos merge all expectations into a conception of history seen from a moralistic standpoint. They are also an illusion for sale when in the Nigerian context they talk about progress.
