Globally, over a million species are threatened with extinction from habitat loss, climate change, over-exploitation as well as other anthropogenic activities. Orchids are particularly at risk in part due to their distinctive ecology including high species diversity, often limited geographic range for many species, and tight ecological relations with specific symbionts. They are the most diverse group of flowering plants with ~28,000 species and are found on all but one continent. However, due to increasing pressures from humans many orchids are threatened with extinction. It is therefore impo

Abstract:
This module looks at the conservation outlook for Madagascar’s bats. Madagascar has nearly 40 recognized species of bats, distributed among seven families, over half of which are endemic to the island, including the family Myzopodidae. While some are recognized as threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, most of Madagascar’s bat species are actually too poorly studied to estimate their conservation status. Further research is needed on the important aspects of bat ecology: roosting patterns and preferences, foraging and habitat use, and diet. Bats perform several important ecosys

Abstract:
In recent years, social prescribing—particularly green prescribing and nature prescriptions—has rapidly gained popularity as a holistic approach to improving health and well-being by connecting individuals with nature-based activities and community support. Due to the unique qualities of protected and conserved areas, they provide irreplaceable benefits to humans. This has prompted many to quickly identify, define, and measure their positive impacts on human health and well-being. As exciting as this potential may be, it is imperative to consider that health is the terrain of another sector. J

This essay attempts to document the funds invested by the IDB and its counterparts and how the resources were used in the restricted field of protected areas in Brazil, during the period 1990-1999. For this purpose, all relevant documents regarding loans, technical cooperation and small projects approved or executed since 1990 were reviewed. The goal of the exercise was to fine-tune a search on the subject of protected areas, as defined by the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and by the Brazilian legislation on the matter. In the 20 years since the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Shark Specialist Group’s (SSG) first status report (Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras: The Status of the Chondrichthyan Fishes), much has changed for sharks, rays and chimaeras. This report updates our understanding, and the scope of information in its 2,000-odd pages reflects the scale of these two decades of change. The breadth of research topics has expanded, mirroring the inclusion of a greater diversity of species, and attention is being trained on the emerging threats and the accelerating global changes to aquatic ecosystems.
