Eyambe, Linda. "A Digital Library Component Assembly Environment." Thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://pubs.cs.uct.ac.za/archive/00000306/.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital libraries (DLs) represent an important evolutionary step towards accessing structured digital information. DLs are often built from scratch or by using proprietary monolithic software that is often difficult to customise and extend to meet changing requirements. Researchers are beginning to realise that this is not an ideal solution and as a result, are creating component suites and accompanying protocols to encourage the creation of modular DLs. Despite the introduction of component models, it is not immediately apparent how they can be seamlessly assembled to produce diverse, yet fully functional, component-based digital library systems without knowledge of the underlying protocols. This dissertation presents a graphical user interface and its associated framework for creating DL systems from distributed components, consequently shielding DL architects from the complexity of using components models and taking advantage of the inherent benefits of the component programming paradigm. The framework introduced in this dissertation was designed to be generic enough to be adopted for the assembly of a variety of component-based systems over and beyond the digital library community. After being tested on over thirty inexperienced users and modelling a number of existing DL systems, graphically assembling distributed components has been shown to be a viable approach to simplify the creation of modular DLs from a pool of heterogeneous components.

Full text
Abstract:
E-LIS is an open access archive for library and information science. With over 5,800 documents as of June 2007 (over 5,000 in February 2007 when the archive was investigated in-depth), E-LIS is the world’s largest archive for LIS. Over half the documents in ELIS are peer-reviewed. E-LIS is particularly strong in English and Spanish language documents, but supports over 22 languages. With this multilingual support and a global team of volunteer editors, E-LIS has significant diversity in content, an advantage over traditional, english-based LIS resources. Not surprising, this tool designed by and for librarians features robust and user friendly search options. Lack of phrase searching, and pointing to a cross-archiving searching tool no longer supported when much better options are available, are identified as areas for improvement.

The design of this library is based upon two architectural concepts: the concept of defensive architecture, which is the architectural response to perceived threat, and the concept of the building as metaphysical model of the universe, having domains of sacred and profane space. I have long been intrigued by defensive architecture, by the forms it generates in response to perceived threat. The towers, mask-like facades, and labyrinthine passageways remain intriguing long after the war is over. Castles and fortifications are the architectural manifestation of an abrupt discontinuity in the organization of space. A stark polarity is created, a partition between inside and out, ours and theirs, us and them. The stark form of a defensive structure derives enormous formal power from this conflict of opposites. Tamer, gentler forms of this concept may be found in the form of monasteries, and madrasas. These share the qualities of retreat and seclusion, but for a different purpose - to be able to concentrate better on learning, and/or prayer. Their seclusion from the outside world is not a hostile act but rather a desire to intensify their inner world of prayer and study. These building types share qualities of having walls which segregate opposing conditions, as in defensive architecture, but differ in that the thing being excluded from the protected domain are of a spiritual nature, rather than physical threats. Sacred space is a domain generated by an origin which marks a vertical break in space from the ordinary ...

Khalili, Shavarini Nazanin. "Analysis of spatio-social relations in a photographic archive (Flickr)." Thesis, City University London, 2011. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/2725/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to study and analyse the complex spatio-social relations among social entities who interact together in a spatially structured social group. This aim is approached in three steps: 1. Collecting and classifying spatio-social data, 2. Disambiguating place names that people use to refer to their homes and 3. Analysis of data of this kind (numerical and visual). The source of spatio-social data used in this work is Flickr. Flickr is a yahoo photo sharing site. Users have a social network of friends and a collection of photos on their profiles. According to available statistics1 the Flickr database contains more than three billion photos, out of which a hundred million are geo-tagged. In retrieving data from Flickr database two different samples have been explored. Initially a random collection of photos that have been uploaded in Flickr during the examined periods has been collected on a daily basis. This is followed by much narrower and more precise criteria for the second data sampling that resulted in Flickr sample GB data. The thesis concludes that location dominates a significant pattern in online behavior of social entities who interact together via internet. The core contributions of this thesis are in the areas of: 1. Extracting indicative sample from very large data sets, 2. Disambiguation of place names that people use in their natural language to refer to their home locations and 3. Proposing potential new insights into behaviors of social entities with spatio-social relations. Overall, the popularity of social networking sites and availability of data that can be obtained from the web (whether people provide voluntarily or can be retrieve as a consequence of online interactions) are likely to continue the increasing trend in future. In addition, the realm of spatio-social data analysis and its visualization also continue to expand, as do the types of maps that are achievable, the visualization packages that the maps can be built with, the number of map users and improved gazetteers with more comprehensive coverage of vague terms. Therefore, the developed methods, algorithm and applications in this study can be beneficial to researchers in social and e-social sciences, those who are interested in developing and maintaining social networking sites, geographers who work on disambiguation of fuzzy vernacular geographic terms, visualization and spatial data analysts in general and those who are looking for development and accommodation of better business strategies (i.e. localization and personalization). 1 (http://www.Flickr.com, retrieved 20/07/09)

Chitturi, Kiran. "Building CTRnet Digital Library Services using Archive-It and LucidWorks Big Data Software." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/46865.

Abstract:
When a crisis occurs, information flows rapidly in the Web through social media, blogs, and news articles. The shared information captures the reactions, impacts, and responses from the government as well as the public. Later, researchers, scholars, students, and others seek information about earlier events, sometimes for cross-event analysis or comparison. There are very few integrated systems which try to collect and permanently archive the information about an event and provide access to the crisis information at the same time. In this thesis, we describe the CTRnet Digital Library and Archive which aims to permanently archive crisis event information by using Archive-It services and then provide access to the archived information by using LucidWorks Big Data software. Through the Big Data (LWBD) software, we take advantage of text extraction, clustering, similarity, annotation, and indexing services and build digital libraries with the generated metadata that will be helpful for the system stakeholders to locate information about an event. Through this study, we collected data for 46 crises events using Archive-It. We built a CTRnet DL prototype and its services for the ``Boston Marathon Bombing" collection by using the components of LucidWorks Big Data. Running LucidWorks Big Data on a 30 node Hadoop cluster accelerates the sub-workflows processing and also provides fault tolerant execution. LWBD sub-workflows, ``ingest" and ``extract", processed the textual data present in the WARC files. Other sub-workflows ``kmeans", ``simdoc", and ``annotate" helped in grouping the search-results, deleting the duplicates and providing metadata for additional facets in the CTRnet DL prototype, respectively.

Many experts in the global library and archive sector consider preservation a fundamental responsibility for all institutions and professionals. However, preservation is not yet an established core topic in the professional education of South African information workers, despite the increased availability of education and training options in recent years. Many of the current course and module offerings at university and technikon teaching departments do not cover the essential preservation issues adequately. As a result, professional librarians and archivists often feel ill prepared to address preservation issues in the working world. There are other options for learning about preservation outside the traditional classroom environment including publications and short workshops often organised by interested professional organisations.

Fuller, Lauran Ray. "Inheriting the Library: The Archon and the Archive in George MacDonald's Lilith." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4432.

Full text
Abstract:
George MacDonald's novel Lilith relates the story of a young man inheriting his deceased father's estate and coming in contact with its remarkable library and mysterious librarian. The protagonist's subsequent adventures in a fantastical world prepare the young Mr. Vane to assume authority over his inherited archive and become an archon. Jacques Derrida's exposition of the responsibilities of the archon including archival authority, domiciliation, and consignation illuminate the mentoring role of the elusive librarian Mr. Raven in Vane's adventures. By using Derrida's deconstruction of archives to unpack the intricacies of knowledge transfer in MacDonald's novel, the lasting impact of the archon on the archive and the individuals in Lilith, as well as the importance of the archon in the transfer of knowledge between individuals facilitated through relationships, becomes apparent. The archon, acting as a gatherer, organizer, and shaper of texts, uses the materials within the archive to exercise power and to bequeath power upon other individuals, as seen in the character Mr. Raven's actions. Lilith illustrates the necessity of the archon as he shapes the archive's contents and governs the interactions between book and reader, ultimately allowing the archive to become a place where knowledge is heritable.

Presidential libraries are not really about presidents. Rather, presidential libraries define publics through the transformation of American history into images and ideas. The presidential library is a uniquely American institution where national history plays out in a mitigated exchange between the representation of memory and the record of political action. On the one hand, the presidential library is a peculiar type of museum and a place of commemoration whose purpose is to perpetuate an often-mythic memory of a singular figure-offering simultaneously the image of an idealized leader and a model for citizenship. On the other hand, its history describes a tenuous accountability between the potentially critical archive and an elusive public. The presidential libraries project a prophecy of historical exceptionalism into the future through the deployment of objects, images, and documents. They reveal how history is used to define American identity, how institutions of stewardship control access and present meaning, and how the contested ownership of history's objects over time transforms ideas of democratic judgment. Therefore, this dissertation examines how the place of the museum and the archive as repositories of national identity, the role of records preservation as a necessary facet of public judgment, and the contentious representations of prophetic heroism in American memory are brought together in the presidential library.
(cont.) From Franklin D. Roosevelt to Richard M. Nixon and beyond, the records and artifacts of presidential intent and institutional practice have been forced over time into an unstable relationship between an obligation to public education as an essential feature of democratic idealism and a belief in the benevolent power of history to hold sway over a singular national future.

Abstract:
Deon van der Walt was, at the height of his career, considered the leading lyric tenor of his generation. In a career that spanned more than 25 years he performed in the great opera houses of the world and sang for the leading conductors of the time, sharing the stage with the best singers in the world. He was the first male South African to accomplish the so-called “grand slam” of opera, having sung in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London), Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna), La Scala (Milan) and the Metropolitan Opera House (New York). He was also a prolific oratorio and lieder singer, collaborating with the best artists the musical world had to offer. In addition he left a large recorded legacy, both published and unpublished. His untimely death on 29 November 2005 was extensively reported on both locally and abroad - a fact which again highlighted the importance of his personal and professional contribution to the international opera world. The Deon van der Walt Collection is the single most important key to unlocking the life and career of one of the most successful South African opera singers of all time. It was bequeathed to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Library the Deon van der Walt Trust in 2007. The collection is made up of an arbitrary assortment of books, documents, sound and video recordings that were left in van der Walt’s Zürich accommodations at the time of his death in 2005. It is housed in separate section on the lower level of the South Campus Library of the NMMU. The collection has been partially catalogued by the NMMU Library but left largely unattended for the last 6 years. The compiling of an annotated catalogue of this collection is the vital first step in connecting the dots of an extraordinary musical career that was hailed as one of the greatest of his time.

Abstract:
Starting from an analysis of the character of the city of Turin (Italy), the project intervenes in the historical urban context with ta proposal for a multimedia library and archive space in a plot left vacant after WW2 bombings. The project includes the reuse of an existing building, formerly a theatre but currently in a state of ruin after the war destructions, as well as the creation of a new wing and public spaces. Its aim is to develop an architectural language that can be an interpretation of the city’s features, sitting halfway between contemporaneity and tradition. The main sources of inspiration are baroque architecture, porticoed public spaces, formal front facades in contrast with more messy and autonomous internal courtyards. The resulting building mixes these influences in a complex combining archive spaces for the nearby Museum of Cinema, offices connected to it, a public library and consultation spaces, multifunctional and lecture rooms, and an independent café with indoor and outdoor seating.

Suleman, Hussein. "Open Digital Libraries." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29712.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital Libraries (DLs) are software systems specifically designed to assist users in information seeking activities. Stemming from the intersection of library sciences and computer networking, traditional DL systems impose library philosophies of structure and management on the sprawling collections of data that are made possible through the Internet. DLs evolve to keep pace with innovation on the Internet so there is little standardization in the architecture of such systems. However, in attempting to provide users with the highest possible levels of service with the minimum possible effort, many systems work collaboratively with others, e.g., meta-search engines. This type of system interoperability is encouraged by the emergence of simple data transfer protocols such as the Open Archives Initiative?s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Open Digital Libraries are an extension of the work of the OAI. It is proposed in this dissertation that the philosophy and approach adopted by the OAI can easily be extended to support inter-component interaction within a componentized DL. In particular, DLs can be built by connecting small components that communicate through a family of lightweight protocols, using XML as the data interchange mechanism. In order to test the feasibility of this, a set of protocols was designed based on a generalization of the work of the OAI. Components adhering to these protocols were implemented and integrated into production and research DLs. These systems were then evaluated for simplicity, reusability, and performance. On the whole, this study has shown promise in the approach of applying the fundamental concepts of the OAI protocol to the task of DL component design and implementation. Further, it has shown the feasibility of building componentized DL systems using techniques that are a precursor to the Web Services approach to system design.

Abstract:
Hip hop is a counter cultural movement that emerged in the 1970s in the South Bronx; it has since grown to be a global movement. It is a counter culture that emerges in the post-segregated, post-industrial, and globalized world. Since 2002, archival collections that document hip hop have manifested within academic institutions. Placing hip hop in academic institutions that have historically served as manifestations of hegemony can lead to codification and commodification. This case study examines the University of Houston Hip Hop Collection and explains the establishment of the archive using the cultural competence framework. It concludes that staff at the University of Houston is culturally competent. The case study suggests that building culturally competent archivists can be tool to ensuring representation within an archive of all facets of society.

With the advent of the National System of Higher Education Evaluation (Sinaes), the library system of the Federal University of Ceara tries to meet the new requirements of the regulating bodies regarding to the archive developing policy. However, such adjustments only occur alongside with the participation and collaboration of both coordinating bodies, namely, the undergraduate courses and the Dean of graduate courses. To better understand this correlation, this study aims to evaluate the overall development policy of the archive of the Federal University of Cearà Library System and its interface with the evaluation process of undergraduate courses. For such a task four specific objectives were proposed; identify and analyze with the coordinating bodies of both courses, the structural difficulties and suitability upon requesting books from the library updated archive , correlate basic titles present in the political pedagogical project of courses and programs of academic subjects with the listing requested by different fields of study; to find out how often these updates are performed by the coordinating bodies, verify with some students their expectations regarding the archives of the libraries; research and analyze the results of the evaluation of undergraduate courses in basic aspect updating bibliographies over the past two years. For such research the descriptive method as methodological procedures were used and adopted. Collecting data in five courses chosen in Fortaleza campus, Geography, Nursing, Metallurgical Engineering, Home Economics and Law. The data collecting used the bibliographies of these basic courses, their lists sent to the University Library, as well as structured interviews with coordinators of the courses, library users and the personnel of Dean of Undergraduate. The data collected by the survey points out the lack of titles that make up the basic bibliography of the five undergraduate courses of the Federal University of CearÃ. Partial results of the analysis show that accommodation, resistance, autonomy and lack of communication are basic factors that cause a disorderly development of the archive and that does not meet the either new requirements demanded by MEC nor the students.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the complexity of digitalization and humanities research practices, with a specific focus on digital archives and film history research. I propose the term “Frankenstein Complex” to highlight and contextualize the epistemological collision and empirical challenges humanities scholars encounter when utilizing digital resources with digital methods. A particular aim of this thesis is to scrutinize digital archiving practices when using the Media History Digital Library (MHDL) as a case for a themed meta-inquiry on the preservation of and access to classic horror cinema in this particular digital venue. The project found conventional research methods, such as the close reading of classical cinema history, to be limiting. Instead, the project tried out a distant reading technique throughout the meta-inquiry to better interrogate with the massive volume of data generated by MHDL. Besides a general reassessment of debates in the digital humanities and themes relating to horror film culture, this thesis strives for a reflection on classic horror spectatorship through the lens of sexual identity, inspired by Sara Ahmed’s perspective on queer phenomenology. This original reading of horror history is facilitated by an empirical study of the digital corpus at hand, which in turn gives insights into the entangled relation between subjective identities and the appointed research contexts.

The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy. The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation. The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.

Project for the new houses of city library and mediatheque, solves the concept of redesigning the old industry area Sevelin in the city of Lausanne, Switzerland. Here should the new social and education district takes place, what brings a new metropolitan lifestyle. Two objects of library and mediatheque end up the rows of rational city grid at this platform. They define the new open space in between as a new entrance area on the platform Sevelin. It becomes also the extension of library activities to the urban space. Here also the new metro station takes place. Concept of the library – “house in house, city in the city” creates the group of three volumes situated under one roof. The houses of adults’ library, youth library and administration define two atriums in between. Here the life of the whole building meets together. Volume of mediatheque steps up the row and shows the new direction of our culture and media.

ABSTRACT General Objective - The overall objective of this thesis is to analyze the organizational power in Information Units under the political perspective of Management Science. Specific Objectives - The following specific objectives we have: a) Measure the leadership in Information Units, identifying the organization's operating styles (individualistic, affiliative, entrepreneur or a bureaucratic leadership style of functioning); b) Measure the power of structure /function / authority, identifying the structural bases of power (structural basis of legitimate power, coercion, reward, and structural basis of skill power); c) Measure the conflict / retaliation, identifying the factors that may cause the conflict / retaliation for no access to organizational power (affective conflict factor or conative conflict factor) and d) Measuring the communication / information among members of work teams in Information Units, identifying the existence of interdependence in the tasks and interdependence of results between team members. Methodology - This research is a multiple case study to present results in more than one unit of information, results that are separated without correlations with each other. The contours were sought in Information Science and Management Science references to support the policy perspective component themes that has the focus on the analysis of organizational power in information units.Questionnaires for the analysis of organizational power were applied to 4 librarians chief of the University Libraries (BUs) of the Library System of the Federal University of Bahia (SIBI / UFBA) and to 4 coordinators of the Public Archives of the State of Bahia (APEB), generating results for each of them. These results, which are presented and discussed separately, pointed out some weaknesses in the SIBI / UFBA and APEB in relation to organizational power. Conclusions - It is concluded that the University Libraries of the Federal University of Bahia Library System (SIBI/UFBA) have an organizational power more focused on the head, through the exercise of authority, and less distributed by members of work teams because power analysis organizational indicates a exercise of power more guided to the structure / function / authority than in the principles of leadership, although SIBI/UFBA has significant potential for leadership, with great potential for conflicts of affective nature (high degree of dissatisfaction), but it does not compromise the achievement of results, because there is in the SIBI/UFBA a high degree of interdependence in the execution of operations and in achieving results because there is a transparent communication and information among members of work teams. It concludes that the Public Archives of the State of Bahia (APEB) has a more focused organizational power in head, through the exercise of authority, and less distributed by members of work teams because the analysis of organizational power indicates the power of exercise more founded on the structure/function/ authority than in the principles of leadership, with potential conflicts of affective nature (latent dissatisfaction) and low degree of execution of operations and in achieving results, because there is in the APEB a restricted communication of information between members of teams work. These weaknesses, rather than weaknesses are opportunities for improvement of the management of these information units, and that's what this paper demonstrates, that improvement actions in the lead, actions to improve the distribution of positions in the hierarchical structure, improvement actions to resolve organizational conflicts and actions to improve the communication and information among members of work teams can actually lead to greater efficiency in working with the information.

Abstract:
Officially founded in 1997, the Pride Library is a pioneering Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) Canadian information-based organization. Although located within D.B. Weldon Library at the University of Western Ontario, the library maintains a primarily grassroots framework. The Pride Library case study reflects a tradition within LGBTQ communities towards preserving and disseminating information otherwise marginalized by larger society. Operating outside of conventional professional informed and institutionally-dominated models, LGBTQ communities create unique grassroots information organizational contexts. In order to develop a deeper understanding of LGBTQ information organizations, an ethnographic study of the Pride Library was developed. The thesis addresses the library’s use patterns, and approaches to space, materials and labour relations. Findings demonstrate that the Pride Library is not only valued for providing LGBTQ-specific information resources, but also for creating a symbolically significant, socially-oriented and community-based LGBTQ environment.

Most Library and Information Science Programs in early age cultivated the professional competencies of Library and Information Graduates needed for entering library related workplace. In view of the recent flourishing development of electronic content industries, the Department gradually strengthens the concepts and practical abilities of students in the curriculum planning for electronic publishing and digital archive industries, to ensure the graduates to be equipped with relevant knowledge and skills while cultivating professional talents in information technology, and electronic publishing and digital archive industries. Consequently, the library and information graduates could be competent enough for more diverse work tasks with the scope of employment market eventual pushing towards electronic publishing and digital archive industries. The purpose of the study is to understand the reasons and job descriptions of the position for library and information graduates upon entering the electronic publishing and digital archive industries. The study intends to investigate the professional competencies needed for the work projects and the views of the supervisors and service targets held towards the graduates. The study further discusses whether the professional competencies of the graduates could fulfill the requirements for work. The study adopts case study with emphasis placed on one electronic publishing and digital archive industry institution in Taiwan as the research field, collecting research data through in-depth interview. The interview respondents include the personnel with library and information related graduates, departmental supervisors, and the service targets with access to execution work from the institution. The study discovered that the main reason leading the library and information graduates’ involvement in the electronic publishing and digital archive industries lies on the contact experience with the industries as a student; furthermore, their interests and for that industry environment and their expectations towards transferring to learning from other work fields. The work taken by library and information graduates in the electronic publishing and digital archive industries include sales, marketing planning and information management. The professional knowledge required for work should be able to control the grasp the overview and trend in industrial development, understand the information requirement for the service target from the work environment, the excellent communication skills and the information technology operating capabilities required for professional competencies. Moreover, the information retrieval skills for various digital content service interface and the managerial capabilities of executing projects are also required to maintain the same requirement of professional attitudes as other works. The personnel should maintain active, positive and continuous learning in industry knowledge as well as enthusiasm for their work. The department supervisor and service targets both indicate that the familiarity of the industries is an advantage for the library and information graduates to enter this field. The knowledge and skills required to perform the job duties can be constructed while at work. The employees could learn from company peers, supervisor and friends; or alternatively read books, and relevant literatures, and even pursue advanced study from on-the-job training. Nonetheless, the performance of professional attitudes depends on the education during the learning process, rather than the immediate effectiveness developed via on-the-job training. The library and information graduates need to possess basic professional competencies in addition to strengthening the advanced application of professional knowledge and skills under such rapidly changing industries. The graduates need to emphasize on self-confidence in professional attitude when executing work tasks, and to cultivate the aggressiveness and ambition for work so that the potential and advantages of the library and information graduates working in electronic publishing and digital archive industries could be stressed.

With the rapid development of the Internet, how to apply Internet resources to support e-learning is becoming a more and more important issue in the e-learning field. Therefore, the study mainly focuses on assessing the differences of learning processes and performance of learners who respectively use the digital resources from Taiwan libraries’ history digital library (structured digital resources) and Google search engine (open ended and unstructured digital resources) to perform problem solving learning for a same target subject via the project-based learning mode. The study aims at exploring the advantages and characters of using digital archives to support project-based learning and proposing conclusions and suggestions that are helpful to using digital archives to support e-learning. The study adopted the quasi-experimental design method to separate all participators into the experimental and control groups in order to evaluate the differences of learning processes and performance of learners who respectively use different digital resources to perform project-based learning processes. The statistics analysis scheme was employed to evaluate the learning performance of learners who perform project-based learning supported by different digital resources based on learning processes, project-based learning outcomes, and questionnaire investigation. Based on the research outcomes, the study confirms the value of digital archives in terms of supporting the project-based learning, and further indicates the role-playing of digital archives in supporting e-learning. The study obtains the following conclusions: 1. The learning performance of the experimental group learners who perform project-based learning processes supported by digital archive resources is superior to the control group learners who perform project-based learning processes supported by search engine resources; 2. The learning satisfactory degree of the experimental group learners who perform project-based learning processes supported by digital archive resources surpasses the control group learners who perform project-based learning processes supported by search engine resources; 3. Compared to the search engine resources, the digital archive resources obviously provide benefit in the action procedure in the proposed project-based learning mode with three learning procedures; 4. Compared to Google search engine resources, performing project-based learning supported by digital archive resources should enhance search performance to promote the user’s willingness while using digital archive to support e-learning.

Abstract:
Over the last 30 years, colleges of education across the nation and around the world have examined and deliberated how best to prepare pre-service history teachers for the challenges of the modern classroom. Specifically, they sought to create and refine teacher preparation programs that foster within the pre-service history teacher the propensity to use authentic teaching practices once they are licensed and instructing independently in the classroom. Using a situated learning theoretical framework, this research study adds to the literature on this topic by examining how a semester-long pre-service residency at a historic site, archive, library, or museum influences in-service history teacher pedagogy. Implementing an ex post facto sequential explanatory mixed methods research methodology, this study pursued the objective of evaluating the nuances of a residency and how those experiences influence in-service pedagogical dispositions. The findings of the study conclude pre-service history teacher residencies offer valuable and unique learning spaces for the pedagogical development of pre-service history teachers by promoting authentic-based teaching models that participants carry into their in-service teaching.

Abstract:
This dissertation entailed a qualitative case study on the confluence of technology and social studies in fostering a constructivist education. Through the examination of pre-service social studies teachers’ understanding of the online primary source resources (OPSR), three themes emerged. The first exposed the fragmented understanding of important pedagogical theories of constructivism and historical thinking among participants; the second suggested that OPSR was mostly valued by pre-service teachers for its provision of primary sources; and the third related to how pre-service teachers viewed the current state of technology and context as problematic for technology integration. Accordingly, four findings were revealed. First, the pre-service teachers in the study demonstrated a limited understanding of the application of foundational theories central to their field of study; second, there were instances of deeper appreciation of the potential of OPSR, indicating that pre-service teachers’ theoretical understanding is ix nascent and may deepen overtime; third, the full potential of technologies such as OPSR was not recognized; and fourth, the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of school and educational system conditions tended to negatively influence their views toward the integration of technology into their teaching practices. Implications indicate that first, foundational pedagogical theories are critical with regard to technology integration in education and as such teacher preparation programs must not assume what is taught is what is learned; second, instances of deeper understanding among pre-service teachers only appeared during the application of their theoretical understandings; third, context is critical in how OPSR would be used in classrooms and such contextual issues must not be ignored by teacher preparation programs; and fourth, teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (PCK/TPCK) is critical in the integration of technology in education.

The diploma thesis deals with the theme of the cooperation of selected secondary schools with memory institutions. In its theoretical part it defines memory institutions and sets them into legislative, historical and didactic context, as well as it concerns with organisational forms of teaching with the focus on the excursion, and teaching methods and methods used in programmes of memory institutions. The practical part familiarises with the research made by a questionnaire survey in selected secondary schools in Prague providing "maturita" graduation and with its results. The aim of this research was to realize if and how the cooperation with memory institutions is used at schools and how teachers and students perceive its benefit. The survey was accomplished in ten Prague schools. The sample was both in terms of quantity and course of study unrepresentative, but we can consider the research as beneficial. Almost half of participating teachers use the cooperation with memory institutions during lessons. Those, who not, often see the benefit of the cooperation for other courses than for their own courses. Students of all schools participating in the survey have the opportunity to take part in excursions to memory institutions during their lessons - the most often to museums and galleries. Two...

This dissertation is a historical biography of F.V. Engelenburg (1863-1938) and covers the period from 1889 to 1938, when Engelenburg lived and worked in South Africa. The study situates Engelenburg in the historical landscape of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The focus is mainly on Engelenburg’s journalistic career at De Volksstem, but attention is also given to his many other interests, including the development and promotion of Afrikaans and the Afrikaans academic culture, especially in the northern parts of South Africa. His work pertaining to the development of architecture, literature, aviation, the visual and performing arts, history, libraries, museums and educational institutions comes under the spotlight. His private life is considered as well in order to portray his versatility as a person. The chapters have been subdivided to highlight the variety of matters he was involved in, and a chronological approach has been followed as is customary in a biography. The study is based on archival research. In particular, Engelenburg’s private collections were used, as well as the private collections of some of his contemporaries. Engelenburg assumes a central place in the biography, with special focus on how he perceived and experienced conditions and everyday life in South Africa from the point of view of his transnational European background. His role as influential opinion-maker and political commentator on local and international politics is highlighted. His ties with political leaders and his involvement in government affairs are emphasised. The study also refers to his continued contact with his motherland, the Netherlands, and with the Dutch language. After the Anglo- Boer War, he realised that the languages of the future in South Africa would be Afrikaans (not Dutch), alongside English. His continuing support for Afrikaans as a language of instruction in schools and universities and the development of the Afrikaans literature, as well as his support for the standardization of Afrikaans helped to establish Afrikaans as an official language alongside English and Dutch in South Africa. Engelenburg’s active contribution to the work of the Zuid-Afrikaanse Akademie voor Taal, Lettere en Kuns (now the Suid- Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns), helped to put the organization on a sound footing for future development. The Akademie can be seen as a living monument to his work in South Africa.
