Abstract:
Abstract During 2016, the Royal Danish Library digitized more than 200.000 pages from the library’s, collections all of which related to the former colonies in the Caribbean. This included books and other printed matter, but also sheet music, manuscripts, personal documents, photographs and drawings. Images were published in Digital Collections, the library’s platform for digitized materials, and were accompanied by limited metadata, thereby posing challenges in terms of accessibility and important historical contextualisation. This essay therefore reflects on the gaps and the silences that haunt indexing and descriptive practices in the migration online. Mette Kia Krabbe Meyer is Senior Research Fellow at the Royal Danish Library and has been project-managing the digitisation. Temi Odumosu is Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at Malmö University and has worked intensively with the collection as user and collaborator in the project What Lies Unspoken. As the Library embarks on initiatives to address the limited metadata associated with its digital collections, the authors come together to unfold key questions about approaches and process. They describe the characteristics of Digital Collections and the metadata currently provided, and ask what is left out and why; thereby engaging cultural biases that uneasily mirror the colonial project. The authors also explore how more inclusive user involvement, particularly in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), could shift language and epistemology. The leading inquiry question is: In the one-eyed colonial archive, what is it possible for metadata to do?

Abstract:
Providing online access to historical newspaper content is a strategic priority for many libraries. As early adopters in hosting an in-house newspaper repository for its own scanned newspapers, Penn State University’s online collection has grown substantially. New systems become necessary over time, however, due to system obsolescence, infrequent vendor upgrades, and maintenance and user needs. This was the case when the University Libraries adopted the open-source “Open ONI” platform in creating its Pennsylvania Newspaper Archive ( http://panewsarchive.psu.edu ), replacing its aging Olive Software ActivePaper Archive™ system. This paper chronicles the planning and design phases of the project, the adoption of the “Agile Scrum” project management framework, and the migration processes developed to transfer 450,000 pages of historical legacy newspaper content from a commercial system to an open-source system hosted in-house.

Abstract:
Liberty’s textile archive is probably unique in the way it is set up, both through its ownership and in its make-up. It shows only one aspect of the firm’s history, although arguably its most important one. It is of interest not only because of the Liberty fabrics, but for 19th-century textiles in general, as it includes material from most of that century. The main purpose of the archive is to act as a reference library for the in-house studios; however, limited access is offered to specialist users from outside the company.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article will explore the idea of the archive as medium, with sub-themes of neutrality, silence, and truth. An archive can serve as the intermediary in the construction of the archival series and collections around a central theme or scope. The messages bound in the archival container are selected to fit into an archival series or collection to reiterate or document a particular aspect. Archival collections have the power and effect of creating cumulative viewpoints over time by way of the contained messages. Selected case studies of more recent user-generated digital archives will be explored in context to these themes; such as A People’s Archive of Police Violence in Cleveland and Take Back the Archive (University of Virginia).

Abstract:
Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalayan Endangered Languages Archive (SiDHELA) created by the Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University is India’s first endangered language archive. This archive is part of the ongoing language documentation initiatives of the Centre funded by the University Grant Commission. The Centre, formally established in December 2016 aims for preservation and promotion of endangered languages in Sikkim and North Bengal. The Centre carries out documentation and description of the indigenous endangered languages of the region through linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork. SiDHELA conceptualised as a platform for a linguistic resource of the languages spoken in the region, houses the primary data collected through fieldwork. One of the main aims of this archive is to preserve the data for long term usage and dissemination. Central Library, Sikkim University hosts the archive under its digital library. Through this archive the Centre for Endangered Languages, Sikkim University seeks not just to preserve and protect but also to promote the use of endangered languages spoken in the region. This paper presents the journey of this archive from idea to reality. This paper outlines the motivation behind the conceptualisation of SiDHELA as a regional archive and then discusses its development. It includes discussion on the developmental platform, theoretical issues in the conceptualisation of the archive and practical challenges in its design and development and its prospects. This paper thus primarily intends to inform scholars and researchers working with endangered languages of the region about this archive and its development. Finally, it hopes to kindle interest among researchers and librarians for developments of more such regional archives.

Abstract:
In the article the Director General of the National Library of Estonia describes the development of the Library as a centre of expertise for the creation and preservation of collections of digital materials within the framework of the European Digital Library. The legal deposit of digital and other non-print materials is seen as an essential precondition for the preservation of the nation's cultural heritage and the article examines the history of legal deposit legislation in Estonia, leading to the inclusion of online publications from 2001. With the technical and other resources available to the Library, it was necessary to employ selectivity in the archiving of online publications and the principles governing the selection are described. The digital archive DIGAR has developed into a flexible archive system covering all the digital objects managed by the National Library and is intended to become a central digital archive for all Estonian libraries. An important priority for the Library is to develop a unified information portal ensuring the compatibility of all e-collections and e-services, offering users integrated access to the Library's resources.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report a new resource for the study of the history of the development of information science and information services in the late twentieth century. The Monty Hyams archives include documents relating to the career of Montagu Hyams (1918-2013), the Founder of Derwent Publications, and an innovator in patents information, chemical and pharmaceutical information, and online information access. The Archive is housed in the Department of Library and Information Science at City, University of London. Design/methodology/approach The origins and development of the Monty Hyams Archive are described, and its value examined by an initial analysis of the light it sheds on the development of Derwent’s World Patents Index. Findings The newly established Hyams Archive allows analysis of previously private and unseen documents, which reveal the fascinating and complex personalities, issues and negotiations which led to the establishment of some of the most significant information sources and access methods of the pre-internet information environment. Originality/value The Monty Hyams Archive is a new and unique resource for the study of the development of the scientific information environment in the last decades of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Introduction. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of The Office of Archive and Library in preservation and communication of local culture. Data Collection Method. Using a case study, this paper involved the data collection by interviews, observations and literature review. Data Analysis. The data were descriptively analysed by using thematic analysis. Results and Discussion. The Office of Archive and Library has three roles in preservation and communication of local culture. They are: (1) as an information provider; (2) as a local cultural preservation agency; and (3) as a communicator of local cultural information. The role in preservation and communication of local culture arises because of the duties of the Office of Archive and Library Office in managing knowledge and efforts to fulfill the intellectual needs of the community. Conclusion. Preservation and communication of local culture conducted by the Office of Archive and Library Office is a manifestation of the function of library. The role in the preservation and communication of local culture will continue to develop in accordance with the user needs.

Abstract This article explores the possibility that public libraries can be repositories for digital community archives. The overarching goal is to establish a case for public libraries’ developing digital community archives that are participatory and which emphasize born-digital items rather than digitized physical items. This discussion follows my own research and experience in this area to include personal information management, social media and the personal archive, and the accidental community archive, and demonstrates that public libraries can focus on communities’ current events and people rather than solely on those from the past.
