Abstract:
Abstract After Second World War Hans Joachim Iwand (1899- 1960) reacts upon the experiences during the time of Nazi-Germany with a conception, which deals in a new way with the questions of political ethics. In this conception Iwand criticized the bipolar and traditional pattem of »State and Church« and explores »Society« as a selfcontained and autonomaus theme for political ethics. It is remarkable to see, how lwands approach to »theologia crucis« and the notions of the term »consciene« are now transformed in an pneumaticological way, that opens the ethic for a conception of public responsibility

Abstract:
AbstractIn the first years after the end of World War II, Hans Joachim Iwand (1899-1960) was intensely engaged for repentance and a radical farewell to the wanderings of the Third Reich in church, society and the political realm. This article traces how he, in doing so, elaborated a genuine theology of peace while practicing pastoral care to refugees from East Prussia. Iwand experienced the antithesis between East and West, resulting in a gradual development of the »Cold War«, as a temptation originating from the continuation of the dualistic worldview of Nazi-ideology. His theological approach is characterized by advancing the question of who and where God is, thus rethinking and renewing Luther’s theology of the cross.

Abstract:
Iwan models have had some exposure recently in modeling the nonlinear response of individual joints. This popularity can be ascribed to their mathematical simplicity, their versatility, and their ability to capture the important responses of mechanical joints under unidirectional loads. There is a lot of history to this category of model. Masing explored kinematic hardening of metals with a model consisting of ten Jenkins elements in series. Soon after, Prandtl explored the behavior of a continuous distribution of such elements. Ishlinskii explored the mathematical structure of such continuous distributions. Much more recently, Iwan demonstrated practical application of such models in capturing various sorts of metal plasticity. Among the features that make such models interesting is a simple relationship between the asymptotic nature of the integral kernel at small values and the power-law relation between force amplitude and dissipation per cycle in harmonic loading. Iwan provided several differential equations for deducing the kernel from force-displacement relations. Segalman and Starr devised methods for deducing kernels from force-displacement curves of arbitrary Masing models. This is illustrated to generate a BPII model equivalent to the Ramberg-Osgood plasticity model. The Segalman-Starr relationship is used to find relationships among several other plasticity models.

Abstract:
Reduced order models for characterizing friction interfaces have been investigated for the last 75 years. Recent work has been focused on microslip formulation of the interface behavior, where continuous contact is approximated with a multi-point contact model. A novel multi-point contact model is presented in this work, which is entirely derived from a shear lag approach to resolve the kinematic state of the friction interface under the presence of tangential loading. Both static and dynamic loading conditions are analyzed and comparisons are drawn between the continuous and discrete models. The series Iwan model presented in this work differentiates between the elastic and friction components of the interface displacement, both parameters being calibrated using material properties and model geometry. Convergence behavior of such models with increasing model order is demonstrated. The response characteristics of the series Iwan model under dynamic loading conditions is also investigated. The series Iwan model is in good agreement with the shear lag approach for results such as propagation of the slip zone with increasing pullout force. The transient response of the the structural mass and the kinematic states of the damping elements are convergent with increasing model order.

Abstract:
Mechanical joints can have significant effects on the dynamics of assembled structures. The goal of our work is to develop physics based, reduced-order, finite element models that are capable of replicating the effects of joints on vibrating structures. Various studies have shown that micro and macro-slip along the joint interface cause the interface stiffness to change and introduce energy dissipation, leading to the observed hysteresis. The authors recently developed the so-called adjusted Iwan beam element (AIBE) for finite element analysis of jointed beam structures. The element consists of two adjusted Iwan models that are arranged to give two-dimensional beam behavior. The adjusted Iwan model is a combination of springs and frictional sliders that exhibits hysteretic behavior due to the stick-slip behavior of the sliders. In this paper, the sensitivity of the performance of an adjusted Iwan model, particularly its capacity to dissipate energy, to variations in its parameters is studied. Parametric analysis is also carried out on the adjusted Iwan beam element to investigate the effects of joint parameters on dynamic responses of jointed beams. Hammer tests are conducted on a jointed beam and its monolithic counterpart. The decay envelopes of impulsive responses for the two systems exhibit distinctly different dynamic properties. To verify that the adjusted Iwan beam element is capable of actually modeling the effects of joints on a vibrating structure, numerical simulations are performed of two hammer tests with different forcing levels. The joint parameters of the jointed beam are identified from the experimentally-obtained acceleration response from one hammer test by using a multi-layer feed-forward neural network (MLFF). Then, using the identified joint parameters, acceleration responses of the jointed beam in the other hammer test are predicted. The capability of the AIBE to capture the effects of bolted joints on the dynamic responses of beam structures is demonstrated through good agreement between simulated and experimental results.

Abstract:
The numerical response of a SDOF oscillator with a friction element and spring in series is investigated. The connection between the friction element and the spring is massless resulting in an ideal “Iwan element,” also termed an elastic/perfectly-plastic element. A methodology is proposed that avoids the complications caused by hysteresis, allowing the system to be simulated using relatively simple programming logic. A notable feature of the technique is that it yields a functional relation for the friction force that depends on the present value of the state vector, rather than on prior history of the motion. The method introduces a small, “fictitious” slider mass within the Iwan element. Simulations are presented to show how the relative size of the slider mass affects the trade off between accuracy and computational costs. It is seen that the results of the method are very accurate and easy to implement. It is also shown that the added numerical stiffness associated with the high-frequency dynamics of the slider mass can be alleviated through use of a switchable viscous damping term. The viscous damping term decreases the number of timesteps required for simulation without adversely affecting the accuracy. The paper considers SDOF systems having a single Iwan-element as well as multiple Iwan elements.

Abstract:
Modeling mechanical joints in an accurate and efficient manner is of great importance in the analysis of large structural systems, which can be composed of a large number of connected components. This work presents an interface model that can be decomposed into a series-series Iwan model together with an elastic chain, subject to interfacial shear loads. The model is developed and results are presented as the interface is subject to harmonic loading of varying amplitude. The model presented is able to qualitatively reproduce experimentally observed dissipation scalings. Finally, the interface model is embedded within a larger structural system to illustrate its effectiveness in capturing the structural damping induced by mechanical joints.

Abstract:
An important problem that spans across many types of systems (e.g. mechanical and biological) is how to model the dynamics of joints or interfaces in built-up structures in such a way that the complex dynamic and energy dissipative behavior that depends on micro-scale phenomena at the joint/interface is accurately captured, yet in a framework that is amenable to efficient computational analyses of the larger macro-scale system of which the joint or interface is a (spatially) small part. Simulating joint behavior in finite element analysis by meshing the joint regions finely enough to capture relevant micromechanics is impractical for large-scale structural systems due to the prohibitively small time steps required and/or resulting matrix ill-conditioning. A more practical approach is to devise constitutive models for the overall behavior of individual joints that accurately capture their nonlinear and energy-dissipative behavior and to incorporate the constitutive response locally into the otherwise often-linear structural model. Recent studies have successfully captured and simulated mechanical joint dynamics using computationally simple phenomenological models of combined elasticity and slip with associated friction and energy dissipation, known as Iwan models. In the present article, the author reviews the relationship, and in some cases exact equivalence, of one type of Iwan model to several other models of hysteretic behavior that have been used to simulate a wide range of physical phenomena. Specifically, it is shown that the “parallel-series” Iwan model has been referred to in other fields by different names, including “Maxwell Resistive-Capacitor” and “Ishlinskii”. Given this, the author establishes the relationship of this Iwan model to several other hysteresis models, most significantly the classical Preisach model. Having established these relationships, it is then possible to extend analytical tools developed for a specific hysteresis model to all of the models with which it is related. Such analytical tools include experimental identification, inversion and analysis of vibratory energy flow and dissipation. A numerical case study of a simple system that includes an Iwan-modeled joint illustrates these points.

Abstract:
Segalman recently proposed a model for joint nonlinearity in a built up structure in which each mode is treated independently (orthogonality is assumed to be preserved) and with an Iwan model added to each modal degree of freedom to capture the nonlinearity of all of the joints that are active in that mode. Recent works have shown that this type of model can faithfully describe the nonlinearity in simple laboratory structures and in simulations of structures with several Iwan joints in the micro-slip regime. This work explores the validity of these concepts for more complicated structures, each of which is part of a production automotive exhaust system. Where possible, factory gaskets were used and the bolted joints were tightened per the manufacturer’s specifications. Tests were performed on different subassemblies of the exhaust using a modal hammer to excite the structure and accelerometers to measure its response. Mayes & Allen’s ZEFFT algorithm was used to determine which modes were behaving nonlinearly. Then an algorithm based on the Hilbert transform was used to extract the instantaneous frequency and damping for the modes of interest and to fit the behavior to a modal Iwan model. The results show several modes that exhibit small frequency shifts and damping that changes by as much as a factor of two over the range of forces that were employed.
