Adult ixodid ticks were collected at 2-weekly intervals for a period of 23 consecutive months from 15 to 20 Angora goats on a farm in the south western Orange Free State. A total of 6 ixodid tick species were recovered. Rhipicephalus punctatus was the most abundant and prevalent tick, It was present from spring to late summer. Ixodes rubicundus was the next most abundant tick and was present mainly from March or April to July with peak numbers present in April or May. The onset of this tick's activity appeared to be stimulated by low atmospheric temperatures.

Powassan (POW) virus, the cause of human encephalitis in the northeastern U.S. and Canada, is transmitted by tick bite. Since the geographic and host distribution patterns of Ixodes dammini Spielman, et al, 1979 and POW virus overlap, the potential of this tick species to transmit POW virus was explored. Abstract This expert opinion focuses on the diversity and distribution of ticks and tick-borne pathogens in the Middle East. From 12 countries in the Middle East where reports and articles were published, a total of 136 species of ticks have been reported. Of these, 111 species belong to the family Ixodidae and 25 species belong to the Argasidae. Reported species of the Ixodidae belong to eight genera (Hyalomma, 25; Rhipicephalus, 23; Haemaphysalis, 22; Ixodes, 20; Amblyomma, 10; Dermacentor, 6; Boophilus, 4; and Aponomma, 1 species), while the Argasidae belong to five genera (Ornithodoros, 13; Argas, 8; Alveonasus, 2; Carios, 1; and Otobius, 1 species). Based on the results of available reports, it seems that species belonging to the genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes and Ornithodoros have the highest species diversity in the Middle East.

Considering the confirmed role of mice as the important reservoirs and vectors of zoonotic diseases, the aim of this study was to determine the Apodemus agrarius seasonal dynamics and its role as a vector of ixodid ticks. Six ixodid tick species were identified on 993 specimens of A. agrarius. The average number of ticks per mouse was 1.181±0.066, and the highest number of collected ticks per one individual was 31. Based on the tick prevalence of infested murid species, the level of potential risk for human and animals could be predicted in certain habitats.
