Abstract:

Abstract:
Our tripartite research aims to demonstrate the continuity between ancient and contemporary theatre in terms of theatricality. Firstly, we focused on Greek and Latin tragedies based on Agamemnon's theme (Aeschylus' Agamemnon and Eumenides, Seneca's Thyestes and Agamemnon) and secondly, we pursued our study on the plays of the French author D. -G. Gabily. We examined how a spectacular form emerges from the written text in all three cases. As a matter of fact, we came to the conclusion that the characters' discourse modifies the dramatic situation 10 which it refers, as it adds a visual dimension to the scenic actions. The results of our analysis contribute to understand that the spoken word in theatre means more than it suggests: the characters' discourse animates a fictional world that is superimposed on the one represented on stage

Abstract:
This study investigates and documents tenor/bass trombone solo performances at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig, East Germany, between 1821 and 1876. Included is the discussion of a newly discovered composition, the Concertino fur Bassposaune und Orchester, by Carl Heinrlch Meyer, which is the earliest concerto for the tenor/bass trombone. Its performance at the Gewandhaus in 1821 marked the beginning of the solo tradition for the tenor/bass trombone, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus became one of the leading centers of solo trombone performance for the next fifty years. The study includes background information on the rise of the virtuoso soloist in nineteenth-century Germany. It specifically focuses on Friedrlch August Belcke and Carl Traugott Queisser and their performances at the Gewandhaus. All solo trombone performances at the Gewandhaus in the nineteenth century have been documented, and specific information has been provided regarding the soloists, dates of performances and repertoire performed on the concerts. The paper includes a discussion of performance reviews from the Allgemeine Musfkalische Zeitung. The conclusion discusses the importance of solo trombone performance at the Gewandhaus, and the reason for its sudden decline after 1876.

Abstract:
Jules Massenet's mélodies feature a distinct vocal treatment regarding musical prosody through his eight song cycles, including Poëme d'Avril, Poëme Pastoral, Poëme du Souvenir, Poëme d'Amour, Poëme d'Hiver, Poëme d'un Soir, and Quelques Chansons Mauves, and a collection, Expressions Lyriques. These mélodies show the influence of the trend of salon music and the high-level poetry from the poetic movements of romanticism, Parnassianism, and symbolism. This study deals with Massenet's mélodies relating to the prosody idea, which is conspicuous in his vocal treatment. His melodic styles feature four distinct aspects of vocal treatment including lyrical, recitative or parlando, melodramatic, and déclamation rhythmée, and represent the idea of musical prosody of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic aspects. Massenet's other musical idioms such as harmony, form, and piano treatment, are also closely related to the prosody matter as a semantic aspect, reinforcing the poetic mood and content. In this study, each melodic style related to French versification is examined in detail. The musical analysis regarding the other musical idioms on selected examples presents the semantic feature of prosody idea. The brief review of French versification and opinions regarding the performance are included. Massenet's contribution to the genre of mélodie, with the prose melody and treatment of piano as an equal partner of voice line, is clearly demonstrated. With this contribution, Massenet should be recognized as the most influential composer to the climatic time of French mélodie led by Fauré, and Debussy, and Duparc.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of two of the six sonatas for organ using rhetorical-musical prescriptions from seventeenth and eighteenth-century German theorists. It undertakes to examine the way in which lines are built by application of figurae, to observe the design of each of the six movements, and to draw conclusions concerning implications for performance based upon the use of figurae in specific contexts. The period source on melodic design and the ordering of an entire movement based upon principles of rhetoric is Johann Mattheson's Per volkommene Capelmeister (1739). Guidelines for categorization of figures derive from the twentieth-century writers Timothy Albrecht, George Buelow, Lena Jacobson, and Peter Williams. Chapter I provides justification for the rhetorical approach through a brief description of the rise of the process as applied to composition during the Baroque period by relating Bach's own familiarity with the terminology and processes of rhetorical prescription, and by describing the implications for performance in observing the sonatas from the rhetorical viewpoint. Chapter II deals with the process of composition by rhetorical prescription in (1) the invention of the subject and its figural decoration and (2) the elaboration of the subject through the sixpart discourse of an entire movement. Specific figures of decoration are defined through examples of their use within the context of the sonatas. Chapter III constitutes the analysis of the six sonata movements. Chapter IV reinforces the justification of this type of analysis. The figures, as aids for inflection and punctuation, affect decisions concerning articulation of events and assist in effecting convincing performance.

Abstract:
British musical style changed dramatically after 1880 primarily due to factors which may be subsumed under the general heading of nationalism. This change from an essentially Germanic style has been termed the British musical renaissance by many writers on the subject. Within this new musical language, several distinctive substyles arose. One of these, British pastoral style, has been alluded to by Frank Howes and others, but these allusions do not contribute to an understanding of the works purportedly belonging to that style. It is the purpose of this study to define British pastoral style and examine its relation to the British musical renaissance. The method employed for defining style will be that of Jan LaRue's as described in his Guidelines for Style Analysis. What is British pastoral style? Judging from the literature, British pastoral style is a type of British music written between 1900 and 1950 which evokes pastoral images, especially those associated with the British landscape. A stylistic analysis of selected works will define British pastoral style through enumeration and discussion of the style's musical constituents. A more refined definition of British pastoral style is achieved by an in-depth analysis of E. J. Moeran's Fantasy Quartet, which represents a large portion of British pastoral music, that is, works featuring the oboe. Finally, an examination of British pastoral style's relation to the British musical renaissance will reveal reasons for this particular manifestation of British musical style.

Ellinger, Pierre. Paris, EHESS, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988EHES0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Starting from the phokian national legend which consists in a cycle of tales reporting the wars of independence of the phokians against the thessalians in the archaic age, celebrated at the phokian federal sanctuary of artemis elaphebolos in hyampolis, it is shown that the greeks of the archaic and classical periods developped a complex and systematic thinking about exceptions to their own rules of hoplitic war. When wars of annihilation threatened the very existence of peoples and cities, artemis was called to instil the boldness and the courage to face the greatest risks, to inspire the devices to win these wars which transgress every admitted limit and to make civilization triumph where it seemed doomed to sink into wildness. The pondering of the greeks about the extreme forms of war is to be placed in the larger frame of a consideration on "extreme situations" by which the city, opposing the extreme radicalism of mystic trends like orphism which branded her as the absolute evil, endeavoured to explore and draw the limits of human condition at a distance of both the worst and the impossible best. Thus conceived, this whole work is intended as a contribution to the study of the relations between myth and history

Korf, Lindie. "D.F. Malan : a political biography." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/3991.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLSIH ABSTRACT: This study is a political biography of D.F. Malan (1874–1959), the first of the apartheid-era Prime Ministers, and covers the years 1874 to 1954, when Malan retired from politics. It endeavours to provide a warts-and-all account of D.F. Malan which challenges prevalent myths and stereotypes surrounding his public persona and his political orientation. While the overwhelming focus is on Malan’s political career, special attention is paid to his personal life in order to paint a multi-faceted picture of his character. The biography is written in the form of a seamless narrative and employs a literary style of writing. It is based on archival research which utilised Malan’s private collection, as well as the private collections of his Nationalist contemporaries. Malan takes the centre stage at all times, as the biography focuses on his perceptions and experiences. Malan’s views regarding Afrikaner nationalism, which was his foremost political priority, are described, and are related to his views of British imperialism as well as other ideologies such as communism and totalitarianism. This study demonstrates that there is a notable link between Malan’s perceptions of race relations and his concerns about the poor white problem. It reveals that Malan’s racial policy was, to some extent, fluid, as were his views on South Africa’s constitutional position. Debates about South Africa’s links to Britain and the nature of the envisioned republic preoccupied Afrikaner nationalists throughout the first half of the twentieth century – and served as an outlet for regional and generational tensions within the movement. Malan’s clashes with nationalists such as Tielman Roos, J.B.M. Hertzog and J.G. Strijdom are highlighted as an indication of the internecine power struggles within the National Party (NP). By emphasising these complexities, this study seeks to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the South African past.

Abstract:
The experiment by J. C. Bellet and G. Deshayes (1970) with upstream motion of a detonation wave in a duct with supersonic flow of H2/O2 mixture is simulated numerically on the basis of two-dimensional (2D) unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with finite-rate reactions. The one-dimensional (1D) Chapman–Jougouet (CJ) detonation and the self-sustaining detonation, interacting with turbulent boundary layers, are compared for several values of relative heat release in the wave. The phenomenon of increasing the velocity of self-sustaining detonation, observed by J. C. Bellet and G. Deshayes, is reproduced in calculations. The gasdynamic flow structure with bifurcation of normal detonation wave because of interaction with separated boundary layers is analyzed in the reference frame of the wave (assuming, in correspondence with experiment, that the flow around the wave is quasi-stationary in this frame). Heat release along the streamlines is considered. A simple quasi-1D gasdynamic theory, explaining the growth of the detonation velocity, is proposed.

Abstract:
It’s well known that the main mechanisms of holographic grating formation in photorefractive crystals are the diffusion of carriers, their drift in the electric field, and the photovoltaic effect (PVE). We shall concentrate on the last mechanism. It’s often supposed that the PVE in ferroelectrics can be characterized by the current along the polar c→-axis, j=α G I, where α is the absorption coefficient, G: the Glass coefficient, I: the light intensity. In this case, the PVE effect is analogous to the effect of supplementary electric field E ph =j(σ d +σ ph )− 1 , where σ d , σ ph are dark- and photoconductivity. The photoinduced field E ph reaohes 10 5 v/cm in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3. However, the effect of the PVE does not come to longitudinal current.

Abstract:
MHI recently developed a 1600°C class J-type gas turbine, utilizing some of the technologies developed in the National Project to promote the development of component technology for the next generation 1700°C class gas turbine. This new frame is expected to achieve higher combined cycle efficiency and will contribute to reduce CO2 emissions. The target combined cycle efficiency of the J type gas turbine will be above 61.5% (gross, ISO standard condition, LHV) and the 1on1 combined cycle output will reach 460MW for 60Hz engine and 670MW for 50Hz engine. This new engine incorporates: 1) A high pressure ratio compressor based on the advanced M501H compressor, which was verified during the M501H development in 1999 and 2001. 2) Steam cooled combustor, which has accumulated extensive experience in the MHI G engine (> 1,356,000 actual operating hours). 3) State-of-art turbine designs developed through the 1700°C gas turbine component technology development program in Japanese National Project for high temperature components. This paper discusses the technical features and the updated status of the J-type gas turbine, especially the operating condition of the J-type gas turbine in the MHI demonstration plant, T-Point. The trial operation of the first M501J gas turbine was started at T-point in February 2011 on schedule, and major milestones of the trial operation have been met. After the trial operation, the first commercial operation has taken place as scheduled under a predominantly Daily-Start-and-Stop (DSS) mode. Afterward, MHI performed the major inspection in October 2011 in order to check the mechanical condition, and confirmed that the hot parts and other parts were in sound condition.

Abstract:
In this study, the in situ protein denaturation in Dunning AT-1 rat prostate cells was studied using FTIR and DSC. The denaturation information from FTIR showed a shift from α helix (amide-I band at 1655cm−1) to β sheet (amide I band at 1620 cm−1). The relative beta sheet area change between 20 °C and 70 °C was used to dynamically scale the thermal denaturation process during heating at 2 °C/min. DSC scans (at scanning rates of 2°C/min and 5°C/min) of the heat flow due to protein denaturation were recorded from 20 °C to 70 °C. The range over which protein denaturation occurs (from 45 °C to 70 °C) was consistent in both studies. By calorimetric experiments with DSC, the enthalpy change during protein denaturation was found to be 27.3±4.0J/g J/g and 25.9±0.5J/g, respectively. In addition, the activation energy and frequency factor were measured by kinetic experiments with both DSC and FTIR. A first order irreversible Arrhenius model was fit to the kinetic data using a flexible tolerance method. The activation energy (E) and frequency factor (A) between 20–70 °C was found to be 107.8kJ/mole and 3.4·1014 l/s for the FTIR study and 120.9kJ/mole and 3.6·1016 l/s for DSC analysis at a scanning rate of 2°C/min, respectively. At a scanning rate of 5°C/min, the DSC results gave an activation energy of 144.5kJ/mole and a frequency factor of 4.1·1020 l/s.

Abstract:
This paper presents an experimental study of natural convection heat transfer for an Ionic Liquid. The experiments were performed for 1-butyl-2, 3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([C4mmim][NTf2]) at a Rayleigh number range of 1.13×107 to 7.7×107. In addition to determining the convective heat transfer coefficients, this study also included experimental determination of thermophysical properties of [C4mmim][NTf2] such as, density, viscosity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity. The results show that the density of [C4mmim][NTf2] varies from 1.437–1.396 g/cm3 within the temperature range of 10–50°C, the thermal conductivity varies from 0.125–0.12 W/m.K between a temperature of 10 to 70°C, the heat capacity varies from 1.015 J/g.K–1.760 J/g.K within temperature range of 25–340°C and the viscosity varies from 243cP–18cP within temperature range 10–75°C. The results for density, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and viscosity were in close agreement with the values in the literature. Measured dimensionless Nusselt number was observed to be higher for the ionic liquid than that of DI water. This is expected as Nusselt number is the ratio of heat transfer by convection to conduction and the ionic liquid has lower thermal conductivity (approximately 20% of DI water) than DI water.

Abstract:
Purpose/Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have an impact on health throughout the lifespan (Filletti et al., 1999; Hughes et al., 2017). These experiences range from physical and mental abuse, substance abuse in the home, parental separation or loss, financial instability, acute illness or injury, witnessing violence in the home or community, and incarceration of family members (Hughes et al., 2017). Understanding and screening for ACEs in children with urinary incontinence can help practitioners identify psychological stress as a potentially modifiable risk factor. Methods: A 5-month chart review was performed identifying English speaking patients ages 6-11 years presenting to the outpatient urology office for an initial visit with a primary diagnosis of urinary incontinence. Charts were reviewed for documentation of individual or family risk factors for ACEs exposure, community risk factors for ACEs exposures, and records where no related documentation was included. Results: For the thirty-nine patients identified, no community risk factors were noted in the charts. Seventy-nine percent of patients had one or more individual or family risk factors documented. Implications for Nursing Practice This chart review indicates that a significant percentage of pediatric, school-aged patients presenting with urinary incontinence have exposure to ACEs. A formal assessment for ACEs at the time of initial presentation would be helpful to identify those at highest risk. Abstract:

Weinberg, Zwi G., Richard E. Muck, Nathan Gollop, Gilad Ashbell, Paul J. Weimer, and Limin Kung, Jr. effect of lactic acid bacteria silage inoculants on the ruminal ecosystem, fiber digestibility and animal performance. United States Department of Agriculture, September 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2003.7587222.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall objective of the whole research was to elucidate the mechanisms by which LAB silage inoculants enhance ruminant performance. The results generated will permit the development of better silage inoculants that maximize both silage preservation and animal performance. For this one-year BARD feasibility study, the objectives were to: 1. determine whether lactic acid bacteria (LAB) used in inoculants for silage can survive in rumen fluid (RF) 2.select the inoculants that survived best, and 3. test whether LAB silage inoculants produce bacteriocins-like substances. The most promising strains will be used in the next steps of the research. Silage inoculants containing LAB are used in order to improve forage preservation efficiency. In addition, silage inoculants enhance animal performance in many cases. This includes improvements in feed intake, liveweight gain and milk production in 25-40% of studies reviewed. The cause for the improvement in animal performance is not clear but appears to be other than direct effect of LAB inoculants on silage fermentation. Results from various studies suggest a possible probiotic effect. Our hypothesis is that specific LAB strains interact with rumen microorganisms which results in enhanced rumen functionality and animal performance. The first step of the research is to determine whether LAB of silage inoculants survive in RF. Silage inoculants (12 in the U.S. and 10 in Israel) were added to clarified and strained RF. Inoculation rate was 10 ⁶ (clarified RF), 10⁷ (strained RF) (in the U.S.) and 10⁷, 10⁸ CFU ml⁻¹ in Israel (strained RF). The inoculated RF was incubated for 72 and 96 h at 39°C, with and without 5 g 1⁻¹ glucose. Changes in pH, LAB numbers and fermentation products were monitored throughout the incubation period. The results indicated that LAB silage inoculants can survive in RF. The inoculants with the highest counts after 72 h incubation in rumen fluid were Lactobacillus plantarum MTD1 and a L. plantarum/P. cerevisiae mixture (USA) and Enterococcus faecium strains and Lactobacillus buchneri (Israel). Incubation of rumen fluid with silage LAB inoculants resulted in higher pH values in most cases as compared with that of un-inoculated controls. The magnitude of the effect varied among inoculants and typically was enhanced with the inoculants that survived best. This might suggest the mode of action of LAB silage inoculants in the rumen as higher pH enhances fibrolytic microorganisms in the rumen. Volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in the inoculated RF tended to be lower than in the control RF after incubation. However, L. plalltarull1 MTDI resulted in the highest concentrations of VFA in the RF relative to other inoculants. The implication of this result is not as yet clear. In previous research by others, feeding silages which were inoculated with this strain consistently enhanced animal performance. These finding were recently published in Weinberg et.al.. (2003), J. of Applied Microbiology 94:1066-1071 and in Weinberg et al.. (2003), Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology (accepted). In addition, some strains in our studies have shown bacteriocins like activity. These included Pediococcus pentosaceus, Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus plantarum Mill 1. These results will enable us to continue the research with the LAB strains that survived best in the rumen fluid and have the highest potential to affect the rumen environment.
