Abstract:
Magneto-optic ellipsometry in the longitudinal Kerr configuration was performed to determine the complex permittivity tensor of the Co and SmCo thin films within the spectral range from 400nm to 1000nm. The Co film was a middle layer in a Au/Co/Au trilayer structure. Magneto-optical response was analyzed in terms of Mueller matrix elements. Reduced magneto-optical response of the Co layer is explained by influence of the gold top layer of the trilayer structure. Full Text: PDF ReferencesM. Abstract:
Abstract:
AbstractTor Bergeron was a key member of the Bergen School of Meteorology that developed some of the most influential contributions to synoptic analysis in the twentieth century: airmass analysis, polar-front theory, and the Norwegian cyclone model. However, the eventual success of these so-called Bergen methods of synoptic analysis was not guaranteed. Concerns and criticisms of the methods—in part from the lack of referencing to prior studies, overly simplified conceptual models, and lack of real data in papers by J. Bjerknes and Solberg—were inhibiting worldwide adoption. Bergeron’s research output in the 1920s was aimed at addressing these concerns. His doctoral thesis, written in German, was published as a journal article in Geofysiske Publikasjoner in 1928. Here, an accessible and annotated English translation is provided along with a succinct overview of this seminal study. Major interlaced themes of Bergeron’s study were the first comprehensive description of the Bergen methods: a vigorous defense of cyclogenesis as primarily a lower-tropospheric process as opposed to an upper-tropospheric–lower-stratospheric one; a nuanced explanation of the assertion that meteorology constituted a distinct and special scientific discipline; and, very understandably, a thorough account of Bergeron’s own contributions to the Bergen School. His contributions included identifying how deformation results in frontogenesis and frontolysis, classifying the influence of aerosols on visibility, and explaining the role of the ambient conditions in the onset of drizzle as opposed to rain showers—a distinction that led the formulation of the Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen process.

Peever, T. L., and T. D. Murray. "First Report of Tan Spot of Wheat Caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis in the Pacific Northwest." Plant Disease 87, no. 2 (February 2003): 203. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/pdis.2003.87.2.203b.

Full text
Abstract:
In late May 2001, lesions resembling tan spot were observed on lower leaves of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in early boot stage in Nez Perce County, ID. Abundant sporulation was observed from tan lesions with chlorotic haloes after 2 days incubation in a moist chamber at room temperature. Conidia were multicelled, straw colored, approximately 100 × 15 µm, rounded at the apex, and borne singly on dark brown conidiophores. The fungus fit the morphological description of Drechslera tritici-repentis (Died.) Shoemaker, the anamorphic state of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died.) Drechs. (2). Three single-conidial isolates were sampled from infected plants in a 5 × 1 m area of the affected field and induced to sporulate. Two of the isolates were used to spray-inoculate 3-week-old susceptible wheat (cv. Madsen) in the greenhouse (one plant per isolate, 1 × 105 conidia/ml), and tan spot lesions were apparent 3 to 5 days after inoculation with both isolates. DNA was extracted from all three isolates, and the entire nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) was amplified with ITS1 and ITS4 primers (4). Similarly, 610 bp of the 5′ end of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-dehydrogenase gene (gpd) was amplified with gpd-1 and gpd-2 primers (1). ITS and gpd amplicons were direct-sequenced on both strands, and alignment revealed that all three isolates were identical for both regions. A BLAST search of the NCBI database with the ITS sequence revealed P. tritici-repentis accessions AY004808 and AF071348 and D. tritici-repentis accession AF163060 as the closest matches with 100, 99.8, and 98.8% sequence similarity, respectively. A similar search with the gpd sequence revealed P. tritici-repentis accessions AY004838 and AF081370 and P. bromi accession AY004839 as the closest matches with 100, 100, and 99.0% sequence similarity, respectively. These results, coupled with the morphological identification and inoculation results, confirm the identity of the fungus as P. tritici-repentis. Although reported on other grass hosts in the region (3), to our knowledge, this is the first report of tan spot of wheat in the Pacific Northwest. This disease has been of little concern to wheat producers in the Pacific Northwest due to low rainfall and relative humidity during the growing season. References: (1) M. L. Berbee et al. Pintail is an awnless hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar that was registered in 2012 and is eligible for grades of Canada Western General Purpose (CWGP) wheat. It was developed using wheat × maize-pollen doubled haploid techniques. Evaluated across western Canada from 2008 to 2010 relative to CDC Harrier, CDC Falcon and CDC Ptarmigan, Pintail expressed grain yield ranging from 98.6 to 105.8% of these CWGP wheat checks. Its area of greatest adaptation was in the parkland and semi-arid prairie regions of Alberta and western Saskatchewan, where cold tolerance is a primary concern. Pintail exhibited excellent winter survival, intermediate maturity, medium height and strong straw. Test weight was within the range of the checks, and kernel weight was lower than all of the checks. Pintail displayed moderate resistance to stripe rust, moderate susceptibility to stem and leaf rust, and susceptibility to common bunt and Fusarium head blight. The high yield and awnless spike of Pintail should make it particularly attractive in various livestock feed and forage applications.

Abstract:
CO in a supersonic pulsed beam is excited to the d3Δi state by VUV photons generated in a nonlinear four-wave mixing scheme. An excitation spectrum of the CO d3Δi (ν′ = 20, J′ = 1–3) is obtained at a resolution of 0.8 cm−1 for the first time. The radiative lifetimes of the rotational states are measured as 1.70 ± 0.08 μs, which are similar to but shorter than the lifetimes associated with lower vibrational levels.

Abstract:
We prove in this note the following result. Letn>1be an integer and letRbe ann!-torsion-free semiprime ring with identity element. Suppose that there exists an additive mappingD:R→Rsuch thatD(xn)=∑j=1nxn−jD(x)xj−1is fulfilled for allx∈R. In this case,Dis a derivation. This research is motivated by the work of Bridges and Bergen (1984). Throughout,Rwill represent an associative ring with centerZ(R). Given an integern>1, a ringRis said to ben-torsion-free if forx∈R,nx=0implies thatx=0. Recall that a ringRis prime if fora,b∈R,aRb=(0)implies that eithera=0orb=0, and is semiprime in caseaRa=(0)implies thata=0. An additive mappingD:R→Ris called a derivation ifD(xy)=D(x)y+xD(y)holds for all pairsx,y∈Rand is called a Jordan derivation in caseD(x2)=D(x)x+xD(x)is fulfilled for allx∈R. Every derivation is a Jordan derivation. The converse is in general not true. A classical result of Herstein (1957) asserts that any Jordan derivation on a prime ring with characteristic different from two is a derivation. A brief proof of Herstein's result can be found in 1988 by Brešar and Vukman. Cusack (1975) generalized Herstein's result to2-torsion-free semiprime rings (see also Brešar (1988) for an alternative proof). For some other results concerning derivations on prime and semiprime rings, we refer to Brešar (1989), Vukman (2005), Vukman and Kosi-Ulbl (2005).

Abstract:
The structural and magnetic properties of the stage 2 CocNi1−cCl2- and COcFe1−cCl2-graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) for 0 ≤ c ≤ 1 have been studied by x-ray scattering and dc magnetic susceptibility. The stage 2 CocNi1−cCl2-GICs approximate two-dimensional randomly-mixed ferromagnets with XY spin symmetry. The average effective magnetic moment Peff, the Curie-Weiss temperature θ, and the paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition temperature Tc have been determined as continuously varying functions of Co concentration c. They indicate that the Co2+ and Ni2+ spins are randomly distributed on the triangular lattice sites of each intercalate layer. They also show that the intraplanar exchange interaction J(Co–Ni) between the Co2+ and Ni2+ spins is enhanced and is larger than the interaction J(Co–Co) between two Co2+ spins and J(Ni–Ni) between two Ni2+ spins. This enhanced interaction, J(Co–Ni), can be expressed as J(Co–Ni) = 1.28 [J(Co–Co) · J(Ni–Ni)]1/2. The stage 2 CocFc1−cCl2-GICs approximate two-dimensional randomly mixed ferromagnets with competing spin anisotropy. The dc magnetic susceptibility results suggest that Co2+, Fe3+ rather than Fe2+ are distributed in the intercalate layer. The repeat distance along the c-axis (d-spacing) versus Co concentration deviates from Vegard's law which states that the d-spacing is proportional to Co concentration. The broad peak of d-spacing observed at c = 0.75 is discussed in terms of the double layer model developed by Jin and Mahanti.

Abstract:
AbstractWe have performed CO(J=3−2) emission observations with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) toward the 5′ × 5′ (or 6.6 × 6.6 kpc at the distance D = 4.5 Mpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83. We successfully resolved the major structures, i.e., the nuclear starburst region, bar, and inner spiral arms in CO(J=3−2) emission at a resolution of 22'' (or 480 pc), showing a good spatial coincidence between CO(J=3−2) and 6 cm continuum emissions. From a comparison of CO(J=3−2) data with CO(J=1−0) intensities measured with Nobeyama 45-m telescope, we found that the radial profile of CO(J=3−2)/CO(J=1−0) integrated intensity ratio R3−2/1−0 is almost unity in the central region (r<0.25 kpc), whereas it drops to a constant value, 0.6–0.7, in the disk region. The radial profile of star formation efficiencies (SFEs), determined from 6 cm radio continuum and CO(J=1−0) emission, shows the same trend as that of R3−2/1−0. At the bar-end (r ~ 2.4 kpc), the amounts of molecular gas and the massive stars are enhanced when compared with other disk regions, whereas there is no excess of R3−2/1−0 and SFE in that region. This means that a simple summation of the star forming regions at the bar-end and the disk cannot reproduce the nuclear starburst of M 83, implying that the spatial variation of the dense gas fraction traced by R3−2/1−0 governs the spatial variation of SFE in M 83.

Abstract:
The article presents multicolor emission observed in poly(methyl methacrylate) specimens co-doped by trivalent terbium and europium ions. The bright luminescence was obtained using organometallic complexes of lanthanides and energy transfer antenna effect. Spectroscopic characterization exhibit wide excitation spectrum according to chelating structure of used complexes and characteristic Tb3+ and Eu3+ emission peaks in luminescence spectra. The calculated CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates confirm that colorful emission from green to red can be obtained using proposed materials. Full Text: PDF ReferencesJ.-H. Jou, M.-C. Sun, H.-H. Abstract:
Primary hyperparathyroidism is often asymptomatic, may be detected during routine investigations or may present with features of hypercalcaemia. Vitamin D deficiency causing secondary hyperparathyroidism presents with musculoskeletal symptoms. Studies have shown an association between primary hyperparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency. It has also been observed that when co-exist, these two conditions contribute to each other’s disease presentation and severity. This case report depicts initial asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism developing symptoms due to co-existing parathyroid adenoma and vitamin D deficiency in a 26-year-old muslim Bangladeshi female who responded well to adequate pre, per and post parathyroidectomy medical managementBirdem Med J 2015; 5(2): 104-106

Abstract:
In reading the review by Snyder and Fleming in which they emphasized “those developments which we deem significant or which we have learned are held significant by our colleagues,” I was dumbfounded by the total absence of any mention of Humble Oil & Refining Co.’s leadership in the development of the two‐receiver, continuous velocity logging tool. That tool employed the techniques contained in W. D. Mounce’s patent number 2 200 476 on “Measurements of acoustical properties of materials” which was applied for in December, 1935, and approved in May, 1940. The Humble Seismic Velocity Logger was used to log a shallow core hole near Ozona, TX, on October 18, 1949, and the first deep hole velocity logging operation was achieved on March 5, 1951, in the Ida Rosenbaum no. 1 well in Washington County, Texas. The formal announcement of Humble’s success was in the paper “Seismic velocity logging” by W. D. Mounce, C. L. Hubbard, C. J. Charske, and H. P. Kuppers of Humble’s Geophysics Research Section, presented on November 20, 1951, at the Fifth Annual Midwestern Meeting of the SEG in Dallas, TX.

Abstract:
In this paper, heavy metal oxide glasses co-doped with erbium and holmium ions have been synthesized. Glass composition, based on the bismuth and germanium oxides, has been selected in terms of high thermal stability (delta T = 125 °C), high refractive index (n = 2.19) and low maximum phonon energy (hvmax = 724 cm-1). Up-conversion luminescence spectra under the 980 nm laser diode excitation have been observed as a result of radiative transitions within the quantum energy level structures of Er3+ and Ho3+ ions. Optimization of rare earth ions content has been conducted, the highest emission intensity in the visible wavelength range has been observed in glass co-doped with molar concentration 0.5 Er2O3 / 0.5 Ho2O3.
