Abstract:
Research background: The paper investigates the earnings management phenomenon in the context of Central European countries, attempting to identify the factors and incentives that can influence earnings management behavior on a sample of 8,156 enterprises from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. Purpose of the article: The main purpose of the manuscript is to prove that there are significant differences in earnings management practices (measured by discretionary accruals) across the countries and to find the firm-specific features that influence the way enterprises manage their earnings. Methods: The modified Jones model was used to calculate the discretionary accruals, which are further analyzed across the countries. The statistically significant differences were confirmed across the countries. Thus, the impact of the economic sector, firm size, firm age, legal form, and ownership structure on earnings management behavior is studied by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc tests then revealed the significant differences across the categories of the investigated earnings management determinants. To find the association between the particular earnings management practice (income-increasing or income-decreasing manipulation), correspondence analysis was used to visualize the mutual relations. Findings & value added: The results of the realized investigation revealed that the economic sector is one of the most important earnings management determinants, as its statistical significance was confirmed in each analyzed country. The correspondence analysis determined specific sectors, where income-increasing manipulation with earnings is practiced (NACE codes F, J, K, M, N), and vice versa, income-decreasing earnings management is characteristic for enterprises in sectors A, C, D, G or L. In specific economic conditions, firm size is also a relevant indicator (Hungary), or firm age and legal form and ownership structure (Poland). The recognition of crucial earnings management incentives may be helpful for authorities, policymakers, analysts and auditors when identifying various techniques and practices of earnings manipulation which could vary across the sectors and taking necessary measures to mitigate potential financial risks.

Abstract:
During a regular survey of diseases in farmers' fields of onion (Allium cepa L.) in the Upper East Region of Ghana in March 1997, bulbs infected with white rot disease were collected for identification. A portion of the white mycelium present on the onion scale was cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). After 2 days of incubation, white fluffy mycelium was observed that later developed black sclerotia on the colony surface to confirm the identity of Sclerotium cepivorum. Ten days later, an unknown fungus was observed growing from the original inoculation point of the S. cepivorum mycelium. Pure cultures of the unknown fungus grown on PDA were sent to CAB International, UK, and identified as Gliocladium catenulatum Gilman and Abbott (1). G. catenulatum grew along the mycelia of S. cepivorum and completely suppressed its growth. In culture, G. catenulatum colonized sclerotia of S. cepivorum and rendered them mushy and easy to crush, whereas the uncolonized sclerotia remained firm and difficult to crush. The uncolonized sclerotia when transferred onto PDA produced the white fluffy mycelial growth typical of S. cepivorum; the colonized did not grow at all. G. catenulatum also reduced colony growth, sclerotia formation, and maturation of S. cepivorum. Cultures of S. cepivorum inoculated with G. catenulatum measured 3 cm in diameter after 3 days of incubation and exhibited sparse mycelial growth, while cultures of S. cepivorum measured 5 cm in diameter after 3 days of incubation and produced a fairly even sheet of abundant, fluffy mycelial growth. Sclerotia were produced profusely in pure cultures of S. cepivorum whereas those of G. catenulatum and S. cepivorum in combination produced only two sclerotia after 6 days and these were later colonized by G. catenulatum. A striking characteristic of G. catenulatum was the production of a yellow pigmentation around the colony margins. Species within the genus Gliocladium are known to be antagonistic to, and parasitic on, other fungi. The antagonistic and/or parasitic nature of G. catenulatum on S. cepivorum suggests a possible role in biological control. This is the first report of G. catenulatum in association with S. cepivorum on onion in Ghana. Reference: (1) J. C. Gilman and E. V. Abbott. Iowa State College J. Sci. 1:225, 1927.

Abstract:
AbstractIn a remarkable, often quoted footnote of his famous “Essai sur le don,” Marcel Mauss wonders that traditional Hindu law does not really prescribe the obligation to return a gift (Skt. dāna). According to some authors (J. Parry, Th. Trautmann, G. Raheja et al.) Mauss has demonstrated by this footnote his lack of a firm grasp of the theory of dāna since he did not notice that a dāna contains too much impurity or inauspiciousness to return to its donor. On the basis of striking parallels between the Śāstric theories of greeting (abhivādanadharma) and gift-giving (dānadharma), this paper questions the aspect of impurity in the gift and argues that kingly generosity or liberality and the meritious attitudes of asceticism have been the major source for giving gifts.

Abstract:
Leaf blotch and stem-end rot caused by Gnomonia comari P. Karst. (anamorph, Zythia fragariae Laibach) were observed in a strawberry fruit production field at Watsonville, CA, in 1996. Z. fragariae has been known for years to attack leaves and cause leaf blotch but this is the first time that the perfect stage, G. comari, was identified and documented to infect fruits and cause stem-end rot in California. Symptoms on leaves included pin-point lesions, brownish to purplish blotches, and characteristic large V-shaped lesions. On the fruit, infection showed more frequently on the calyx. Symptoms on the calyx ranged from small lesions on the sepals to a completely infected calyx that turned necrotic and brittle. Calyx infection was observed on seemingly healthy green and ripe fruits. Infected fruits ripened prematurely and turned pale red to brownish in color. They remained firm but were often invaded by secondary organisms including Botrytis cinerea. When infected leaves and fruits were surface sterilized and incubated under humid condition, perithecia and pycnidia readily developed on the lesions. Ascospores oozed from the tip of the perithecial neck while numerous spores oozed out of the pycnidium. The pathogen was identified as G. comari based on size and morphology of the perithecia, asci, and ascospores (1), and the spores were identified as Z. fragariae based on morphology of the conidia and conidiophores (2). Both the spores and ascospores produced pycnidia and perithecia on potato dextroxe agar at room temperature. Inoculation of healthy leaves and fruits with each fungus resulted in development of symptoms of leaf blotch and stem-end rot similar to those observed in the field. G. comari and Z. fragariae were reisolated from newly developing lesions on symptomatic leaves and fruits. Since 1996, stem-end rot has been observed more frequently in fruit production areas in the central coast of California, particularly during wet years. Reference: (1) A. Bolay. Ber. Schweiz. Bot. Abstract:
Teza. Wyniki i wnioski.

Abstract:
It has now become orthodoxy for historians to write about political texts as being part of discourses or languages. This approach has much merit. At the very least, the work of Quentin Skinner, J. G. A. Pocock and John Dunn has encouraged historians to use a broader range of sources, and to ground their analysis of political thought in a firm historical context. Beyond this, discourse analysis offers a means of establishing a causal relationship between political thought and political action. To echo Richard Ashcraft’s definition, political theory is not merely a product of its social context. It supplies the criteria according to which the actions appropriate for changing that context are rendered intelligible. For Skinner and Pocock, the governing paradigms of political discourses, as much as concrete institutions and social structures, have an influence on political actions. However, this approach also has some limitations. Even after the “linguistic turn,” the history of political thought is still predominantly concerned with the accurate recovery of the meaning of texts, not with the reception or dissemination of ideas. To realize the full impact of political texts, we need to uncover not only the author’s intentions in writing, but also the ways in which these works were read and used by their audience.

Abstract:
Quality and customer satisfaction are closely related, the quality of giving a boost to consumers to establish a very strong bond with the company. In the long term bond like this allows companies to thoroughly understand the expectations which the firm maximizes the consumer’s experience of fun and minimize or eliminate unpleasant experience. Because customer satisfaction in turn can create customer loyalty or loyalty to companies that provide satisfactory service quality. The value of service quality performance variables are 143-286, with the average value of 3.31 or assessment the position is quite satisfied. While the assessment of service expectations variable is between 240-294, with the average value of 3.91 or assessment on the position on an important value. Picture of student satisfaction with the service by the Politeknik KENT Bogor can be seen from the diagram on the Cartesian Quadrant II which containts the attributes that have given satisfaction to the students. These are attributes that must be maintained so that student satisfaction is always achievied (a) The building is owned by adequale, (b) The appearance and comfort of the lobby, (c) Clean and tidy room lecturers, (d) Clean and comfortable classrooms, (e) Officers can provide timel, (f) Officers are always ready willing to help in times of need, (g) the officer did not show the impression busy in welcoming the arrival of students, (h) officers always instill confidence in students, (i) the officer behaved in providing services, and (j) students feel secure to do transactions with the institution.

Abstract:
Terada, Lance S., Brooks M. Hybertson, Kevin G. Connelly, David Weill, Dale Piermattei, and John E. Repine. XO increases neutrophil adherence to endothelial cells by a dual ICAM-1 and P-selectin-mediated mechanism. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(3): 866–873, 1997.—Circulating xanthine oxidase (XO) can modify adhesive interactions between neutrophils and the vascular endothelium, although the mechanisms underlying this effect are not clear. We found that treatment with XO of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (EC), but not neutrophils or plasma, increased adherence, suggesting that XO had its primary effect on EC. The mechanism by which XO increased neutrophil adherence to EC involved binding of XO to EC and production of H2O2. XO also increased platelet-activating factor production by EC by a H2O2-dependent mechanism. Similarly, the platelet-activating factor-receptor antagonist WEB-2086 completely blocked XO-mediated neutrophil EC adherence. In addition, neutrophil adherence was dependent on the β2-integrin Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18) but not on leukocyte functional antigen-1 (CD11a/CD18). Treatment of EC with XO for 30 min did not alter intercellular adhesion molecule-1 surface expression but increased expression of P-selectin and release of von Willibrand factor. Antibodies against P-selectin (CD62) did not affect XO-mediated neutrophil adherence under static conditions but decreased both rolling and firm adhesive interactions under conditions of shear. We conclude that extracellular XO associates with the endothelium and promotes neutrophil-endothelial cell interactions through dual intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and P-selectin ligation, by a mechanism that involves platelet-activating factor and H2O2as intermediates.
