Abstract:
We analyze the effect of the coach's gender on risk-taking in women sports teams using data taken from National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball games. We find that the coach's gender has a sizable and significant effect on risk-taking, a finding that is robust to several empirical strategies, including an instrumental variable approach. In particular, we find that risk-taking among teams with a male head coach is 5 percentage points greater than that in teams with a female head coach. This gap is persistent over time and across intermediate game standings. The fact that risk-taking has a significantly positive effect on game success suggests that female coaches should be more risk-taking.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the link between relative market value of representative subsets of athletes in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and individual wages. NBA athletes are categorized with respect to multiple performance characteristics utilizing the k-means algorithm to cluster observations and a group's market value is calculated by averaging real annual salaries. Employing GMM estimation techniques to a dynamic wage equation, we find a statistically significant and positive effect of one-period lagged relative market value of an athlete's representative cluster on individual wages after controlling for past individual performance. This finding is consistent with the theory of prototype heuristic, introduced by Kahneman and Frederick (2002), that NBA teams' judgment about an athlete's future performance is based on a comparison of the player to a prototype group consisting of other but comparable athletes.

Abstract:
Based on an individual longitudinal data on dependent employment we analyse the role of Creative Industries for the employment system of Vienna. We focus on gross job flows and firm dynamics in this priority field of Vienna's urban policy and analyse the characteristics of the different parts of the cluster's production system. We find ample evidence for positive effects of Creative Industries on employment growth and firm birth, but also reveal considerable job turnover and a large heterogeneity of firm growth in the cluster. Especially, we find rather different evolutions along the clusters value chain, which points to weak linkages between upstream and downstream activities in the cluster. (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)

Abstract:
Current demographic developments in industrialized countries and their consequences for workforce ageing challenge the sustainability of intergenerational transfers and economic growth. A shrinking share of the young workforce will have to support a growing share of elderly, non-working people. Therefore, the productivity of the workforce is central to a sustainable economic future. Using a new matched employeremployee panel dataset for Austrian firms for the period 2002-2005, we study the relationship between the age structure of employees, labour productivity and wages. These data allow us to account, simultaneously, for both socio-demographic characteristics of employees and firm heterogeneity, in order to explain labour productivity and earnings. Our results indicate that firm productivity is not negatively related to the share of older employees it employs. We also find no evidence for overpayment of older employees. Our results do not show any association between wages and the share of older employees. Furthermore, we find a negative relationship between the share of young employees and labour productivity as well as wages, which is more prevalent in the industry and construction sector. Abstract:

Although the physical properties of elastic ligatures have been the subject of several studies, the biocompatibility of these materials has not been well documented in the literature. This study was an in vitro investigation of the cellular viability of the murine macrophage J774 cell line in the presence of elastomeric ligatures of different brands and colors, and of nitric oxide (NO) production of these cells both, under the presence of such ligatures, and under the influence of a proinflammatory cytokine: gamma-interferon. After sterilization with ethylene oxide, 6 chains of ligatures of 3 different brands (Morelli, GAC e TP) and colors (silver and transparent) were used at each study time. The 96-well culture plates used in the experiment were divided in 2 halves. The first was filled with J774 cells resuspended in supplemented RPMI medium, along with the chains of each kind of ligature and control cells. The second half was filled with another 6 chains of the same kinds of ligatures, kept in J774 cell cultures in supplemented RPMI medium, along with 10μl of IFN-γ (5 ng/ml) and control cells. The plates were incubated at 24, 48, and 72 hours. The MTT [3 – (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) – diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] technique was used for cellular viability assessment, and the supernatants were collected for NO production analysis with the Griess method. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the results. Cellular viability in the elastomeric groups was higher at the final time point in relation to the control group. However, 3 elastomeric groups (silver Morelli, transparent Morelli and silver GAC) showed significant proliferation after 72 hours. TP-ligature-exposed cells had the same behavior of controls, no significant changes in cellular viability and NO production being found. Although silver Morelli ligatures led to higher NO production, the other types of ligatures did not significantly affect NO production, as compared to control cells. In the presence of IFN-γ, Morelli and GAC ligatures led to a significant reduction of cellular viability after 48 hours. Yet a viability mean higher than that seen in control cells was observed for all ligatures after 72 hours, with transparent GAC showing significant proliferation. Cells exposed to TP ligatures had the same behavior of controls, although silver TP ligatures led to lower viability at 24 hours. Nitric oxide production was significantly greater in all groups at the final time point in relation to the initial time point. The transparent Morelli and silver and transparent GAC showed the smallest NO production at the 3 study time points.

Abstract:

Clostridium difficile is a common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and occasionally causes the life-threatening disease pseudomembranous colitis. The pathogenicity of the organism has been attributed to the production of two large exotoxins, toxin A (308,000 daltons) and toxin B (269,000 daltons). Toxin A is a powerful enterotoxin and is generally thought to play the more important role in the pathology of the disease. Toxin B may exert its effect after the initial tissue damage by toxin A. Both toxins cause rounding of mammalian culture cells by disrupting the cytoskeletal system. The similar biological activities and high percentage of sequence homology between the two toxins suggest that they have a similar mechanism of action. I found that purified preparations of both toxins cleave skeletal muscle actin at a single site, producing a 38,000 dalton actin fragment, and that the toxins are capable of autodigestion. The proteolytic activity may be involved in the mechanism of action of the toxins. I also analyzed an aberrant strain of C. difficile which reportedly lacked the gene for toxin B. Such a strain would be very useful for the study of the mechanism of toxin A. I concluded however, that the strain contained the genes for both toxin A and toxin B. The toxin genes and resulting proteins appear, however, to be slightly different from those of other strains.

In this thesis, I examine the Articles for Deletion (AfD) system in /Wikipedia/, a large-scale collaborative editing project. Articles in Wikipedia can be nominated for deletion by registered users, who are expected to cite criteria for deletion from the Wikipedia deletion. For example, an article can be nominated for deletion if there are any copyright violations, vandalism, advertising or other spam without relevant content, advertising or other spam without relevant content. Articles whose subject matter does not meet the notability criteria or any other content not suitable for an encyclopedia are also subject to deletion. The AfD page for an article is where Wikipedians (users of Wikipedia) discuss whether an article should be deleted. Articles listed are normally discussed for at least seven days, after which the deletion process proceeds based on community consensus. Then the page may be kept, merged or redirected, transwikied (i.e., copied to another Wikimedia project), renamed/moved to another title, userfied or migrated to a user subpage, or deleted per the deletion policy. Users can vote to keep, delete or merge the nominated article. These votes can be viewed in article’s view AfD page. However, this polling does not necessarily determine the outcome of the AfD process; in fact, Wikipedia policy specifically stipulates that a vote tally alone should not be considered sufficient basis for a decision to delete or retain a page. In this research, I apply machine learning methods to determine how the final outcome of an AfD process is affected by factors such as the difference between versions of an article, number of edits, and number of disjoint edits (according to some contiguity constraints). My goal is to predict the outcome of an AfD by analyzing the AfD page and editing history of the article. The technical objectives are to extract features from the AfD discussion and version history, as reflected in the edit history page, that reflect factors such as those discussed above, can be tested for relevance, and provide a basis for inductive generalization over past AfDs. Applications of such feature analysis include prediction and recommendation, with the performance goal of improving the precision and recall of AfD outcome prediction.

Abstract:
- Libraries are institutions of learning - They represent the cultural heritage and values of a society. Public libraries are often located at places of urban significance or, in the course of time help to establish the latter. They may be landmarks in the urban landscape and help to orient oneself. A public library serves the people, and its spirit should be truly public. A City and University Library in particular, is a highly frequented place where students and citizens meet. It can therefore easily become more than just a place for obtaining information. It can become a place for human interaction, offering spaces to enjoy a concert, to exhibit art or to go there to have lunch or dinner. In that sense, it could be transformed from an institution which is usually used during the day into a vital place which is also used in the evening and on the weekend. The following project pursues the notion of breaking with the traditional image of a public library, expanding its service and thus increasing its position as a place of public interest. This notion is a result of my thesis work, rather than the initial idea from which I started. The location of the project at the edge of the university campus in Frankfurt, Germany and the existence of a theater next to the existing library offered the possibility of establishing a cultural meeting place in one of Frankfurt's city districts.

Abstract:
We analyze performance under pressure and estimate the causal effect of audience size on the success of free throws in top-level professional basketball. We use data from the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the seasons 2007/08 through 2015/16. We exploit the exogenous variation in weather conditions on game day to establish a causal link between attendance size and performance. Our results confirm a sizeable and strong negative effect of the number of spectators on performance. Home teams in (non-critical) situations at the beginning of games perform worse when the audience is larger. This result is consistent with the theory of a home choke rather than a home field advantage. Our results have potentially large implications for general questions of workplace design and help to further understand how the social environment affects performance. We demonstrate that the amount of support, i.e. positive feedback, from a friendly audience does affect performance.

Joh, Changyeol. "Efficient and robust design optimization of transonic airfoils." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39983.

Full text
Abstract:
Numerical optimization procedures have been employed for the design of airfoils in transonic flow based on the transonic small-disturbance (TSD) and Euler equations. A sequential approximation optimization technique was implemented for solving the design problem of lift maximization with wave drag and area constraints. A simple linear approximation was utilized for the approximation of the lift. Accurate approximations for sensitivity derivatives of the wave drag were obtained through the utilization of Nixon's coordinate straining approach. A modification of the Euler surface boundary conditions was implemented in order to efficiently compute design sensitivities without recreating the grid. Our design procedures experienced convergence problems for some TSD solutions, where the wave drag was found not to vary smoothly with the design parameters and consequently create local optimum problems. A procedure interchanging the role of the objective function and constraint, initially minimizing drag with a constraint on the lift was found to be effective in producing converged designs, usually in approximately 10 global iterations. This procedure was also shown to be robust and efficient for cases where the drag varied smoothly, such as with the Euler solutions. The direct lift maximization with move limits which were fixed absolute values rather than fractions of the design variables, was also found to be a reliable and efficient procedure for designs based upon the Euler equations.

Depuis toujours? Depuis l’arkhè de la hiérarchie?

Abstract:
The objective of this investigation is to predict the residual strength of notched composite Iaminates with various layups, subjected to low frequency fatigue loading with constant amplitude at room temperature, by using a material modeling approach, fracture and fatigue mechanics and the finite element method (FEM). For simplicity, after thousands of cycles, the geometry of a circular hole of the deformed laminate was categorized as (1) uniformly expanded hole into elliptic shape, (2) crack propagation around the hole transversely. Both types were studied for 12 cases of layups with various proportions of 0, 45, -45 and 90 degree plies. The effect of geometry change during fatigue on residual strength was attributed to the elliptical hole, longitudinal splitting, matrix cracking (reduction moduli of plies), crack propagation and local delamination. Due to the thin through-the-thickness notched laminate, two-dimensional FEM was used and interlaminar stresses were not considered. Reduction of stress concentration is a reason for the increase of the residual strength of the notched laminate. The stress concentration factor decreases while the elliptic hole becomes more slender; that was examined by the FEM. The residual strength and stiffness were determined by the material modeling with moduli reduction and damaged zone, and the numerical result was obtained by FEM. Laminate theory, point stress criterion, polynomial failure criterion, ply discount method, and fatigue and fracture mechanics (Paris' Power Law) were also included in this research. Geometry change and moduli reduction are two major effects that are considered to predict the notched strength. The WN point stress fracture model is adopted for simplicity, instead of the average stress criterion. Ktg that corresponds to the unnotched strength in the normalized stress base curve is used to obtain the characteristic length (do). We find that Ktg decreases when the elliptic hole becomes more slender and more moduli are reduced (more plies crack). At the time do that is determined from Ktg in the base curve is not necessarily a fixed material constant. The correlation between the fatigue life and the residual strength as predicted by the model and those determined numerically is found within acceptable errors in comparison with the experimental data.

Abstract:
We assess empirically the changes in returns to education at the subnational level in Uganda using the Uganda National Household Surveys for 2002/2003 and 2005/2006. Our results indicate that average returns to schooling tended to converge across regions in the last decade. The overall trend in convergence of returns to schooling took place at all levels of educational attainment and this behaviour in returns to education is mostly driven by the dynamics of returns to schooling in urban areas. We analyse subnational convergence in returns to education and unveil deviant dynamics in Northern Uganda. We discuss the potential challenges to inclusive economic growth in Uganda which are implied by our results. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Due to the free nature of Wikipedia and allowing open access to everyone to edit articles the quality of articles may be affected. As all people don’t have equal level of knowledge and also different people have different opinions about a topic so there may be difference between the contributions made by different authors. To overcome this situation it is very important to classify the articles so that the articles of good quality can be separated from the poor quality articles and should be removed from the database. The aim of this study is to classify the articles of Wikipedia into two classes class 0 (poor quality) and class 1(good quality) using the Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and data mining techniques. Two ANFIS are built using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox [1] available in Matlab. The first ANFIS is based on the rules obtained from J48 classifier in WEKA while the other one was built by using the expert’s knowledge. The data used for this research work contains 226 article’s records taken from the German version of Wikipedia. The dataset consists of 19 inputs and one output. The data was preprocessed to remove any similar attributes. The input variables are related to the editors, contributors, length of articles and the lifecycle of articles. In the end analysis of different methods implemented in this research is made to analyze the performance of each classification method used.

Abstract:
Studies conducted for the US have found a positive effect of human capital endowments on employment growth, with human capital endowments diverging at the same time. In contrast, studies for European countries have found convergence of human capital endowments. This paper tests these relationships for 99 Austrian districts for the observation period 1971-2011 by estimating how the presence of high-skilled employment affects total, low-skilled and high-skilled employment growth. To this end, OLS, fixed effects and first difference regressions are estimated. The results show continuous convergence of high-skilled employment which, however, slowed downed significantly since the 1990s. In contrast to previous studies, evidence for positive effects of high-skilled on total and low-skilled employment is only weak and varies over time. Furthermore, the results show that total and high-skilled employment in suburban areas grew faster than in other regions, while districts which bordered the Eastern Bloc were disadvantaged. Nevertheless, spatial neighbourhood effects within Austria are only weak. (authors' abstract)

Full text
Abstract:
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is a technology-driven field which develops as early as mid-1960 when computers and other digital circuitry became fast enough to process large amounts of data efficiently. Since then techniques and applications of DSP have been expanding at a tremendous rate. With the development of large-scale integration, the cost and size of digital components are reducing, and speed of digital components is increasing. Thus the range of applications of DSP techniques is growing. Almost all current discussions of speech bandwidth compression systems are directed toward digital implementation, because these are now the most practical. The importance of DSP appears to be increasing with no visible signs of saturation.

This thesis provides the description and results of designing laboratory experiments for the illustration of basic theory in the field of DSP. All experiments are written for the Texas Instruments TMS320I0 digital signal processing microcomputer and based on softwares provided by Atlanta Signal Process, Inc. (ASPI). The use of the 320/pc Algorithm Development Package (ADP) and Digital Filter Design Package (DFDP) developed by ASPI is introduced. The basic concepts, such as linear convolution, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter design, Fast Fourier Transform (FF1), are demonstrated. The IBM PC AT is interfaced with the TMS32010 processor. The experiments and their introductions in the thesis also serve as a manual for the DSP Laboratory; to complement the introductory signal processing course.

Abstract:
The nationwide effort to improve our schools and student achievement through a rebuilding of our educational system has not come without controversy; however, one element that is consistent throughout the research (Carnegie, Holmes, NEA, and the National Governors Association) is that teachers should participate in setting school goals and be accountable for achieving agreed upon standards of performance. This, of course, means a major shift in the current organizational and managerial structure of the school. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teachers' involvement in decision-making and their perceptions of the effectiveness of the academic programs in their schools. Also, an investigation was made between the relationship of the teachers' demographic characteristics and desired levels of involvement with the levels they reported.

Kubin, Ingrid, and Thomas Zörner. "Human Capital in a Credit Cycle Model." WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, 2017. http://epub.wu.ac.at/5681/1/wp251.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
We augment a model of endogenous credit cycles by Matsuyama et al.(2016) with human capital to study the impact of human capital on the stability of central economic aggregates. Thus we offer a linkage between human capital formation and credit market instability on a macrolevel combined with an analysis of functional income distribution. Human capital is modelled as pure external effect of production following a learning-by-producing approach. Agents have access to two different investment projects, which differ substantially in their next generations spillover effects. Some generate pecuniary externalities and technological spillovers through human capital formation whereas others fail to do so and are subject to financial frictions. Due to this endogenous credit cycles occur and a pattern of boom and bust cycles can be observed. We explore the impact of human capital on the stability of the system by numerical simulations which indicate that human capital has an ambiguous effect on the evolution of the output. Depending on the strength of the financial friction and the output share of human capital it either amplifies or mitigates output fluctuations. This analysis shows that human capital is an essential factor for economic stability and sustainable growth as a high human capital share tends to make the system's stability robust against shocks.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the effects of minimum wages on human capital accumulation, and steady state employment and growth. The minimum wage is introduced in a model of endogenous growth driven by human capital accumulation. Unemployed agents maximize utility given the information that they are unemployed facing changed budget constraints. This situation is implemented in a "non-market-clearing equilibrium" framework. We show that the steady state rate of growth is not affected by the minimum wage and that in the steady state the system yields full employment. These effects are generated by intertemporal adjustments of the employed households who re-act to the relatively higher minimum wage which increases skills accumulation. (author's abstract)

Olofsson, Nina, and Nivin Fakih. "A Machine Learning Approach to Dialogue Act Classification in Human-Robot Conversations : Evaluation of dialogue act classification with the robot Furhat and an analysis of the market for social robots used for education." Abstract:
The interest in social robots has grown dramatically in the last decade. Several studies have investigated the potential markets for such robots and how to enhance their human-like abilities. Both of these subjects have been investigated in this thesis using the company Furhat Robotics, and their robot Furhat, as a case study. This paper explores how machine learning could be used to classify dialogue acts in human-robot conversations, which could help Furhat interact in a more human-like way. Dialogue acts are acts of natural speech, such as questions or statements. Several variables and their impact on the classification of dialogue acts were tested. The results showed that a combination of some of these variables could classify 73 % of all the dialogue acts correctly. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the market for social robots which are used for education, where human-like abilities are preferable. A literature study and an interview were conducted. The market was then analyzed using a SWOT-matrix and Porter’s Five Forces. Although the study showed that the mentioned market could be a suitable target for Furhat Robotics, there are several threats and obstacles that should be taken into account before entering the market.

Abstract:
Many countries have reduced the generosity of disability benefits while making them more activating - yet few studies have examined how employment rates have subsequently changed. We present estimates of how the employment rates of older workers with poor health in 13 high-income countries changed between 2004-7 and 2012-15 using HRS/SHARE/ELSA data. We find that those in poor health in the USA have experienced a unique deterioration: they have not only seen a widening gap to the employment rates of those with good health, but their employment rates fell per se. We find only for Sweden (and possibly England) signs that the health employment gap shrank. We then examine possible explanations for the development in the USA: we find no evidence it links to labour market trends, but possible links to the USA's lack of disability benefit reform - which should be considered alongside the wider challenges of our findings for policymakers.

Joemets, Micheline. "René Magritte, a critique of reification." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/33550.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay examines René Magritte’s works from 1925 to 1933. It posits that Magritte’s paintings underwent two distinct stages of resistance to commodity relations, one around 1925-1927, the other starting in 1933 with the development of a work process known as objet-réponse. It suggests that the two stages of resistance to commodity relations were founded on opposite modes of construction. The works dating from the early years are understood as being the result of a constant effort to negate the structural principles of the 'organic’ work of art, while the works dating from 1933, are understood as aiming for the creation of a new value system, one which transcends the rational and quantitative norms imposed by reified society.
