Abstract:
From the perspective of a research in art by the auto-ethnographic view, this memorial proposes an reflexive analise of the composition process of a hybridized belly dance choreography with the poetic of the choreographer Eva Schul . By this way, it seeks to understand how can belly dancing be movement matrix for a contemporary dance composition. Studies in "World Dance" (FOSTER, 2009; SHAY; SELLERS - YOUNG, 2003; 2005) and the post colonial perspective of authors like Edward Said (2007) and Homi Bhabha (2010), provided a theoretical framework to propose a non-eurocentric approach to belly dance, from which all dances are artistically potent regardless of their origin. Immersed in the classes of Eva Schul, learning her poetic, experiencing her technique and inspired by anthropophagy (ANDRADE, 1924 1928; DANTAS, 2008), the researcher found the way to achieve the desired hybridization. (CANCLINI, 2011; LOUPPE, 2012) The poetic from Eva Schul allowed to insert into the composition concept, reflection and to connect the classical movements of oriental dance to a compositional procedures of contemporary dance. The choreography presented sought to problematize the orientalism that sees belly dance as an immutable form throughout the times. In this study it was understood that to place belly dance in a contemporary perspective, it is necessary to subvert the orientalist vision associated with this dance and reflect on the ambiguity of the belly dancer who, if on one hand, is shown as an exotic being to be appreciated, on the other is often viewed only as a passive sensual object.

Abstract: Populations interact with each other, having competition for resources and this leads to fluctuations in the abundance of individuals. The tritrophic interactions between plants, herbivores and parasitoids quantitatively influence activities of an adjacent level. Studies of this interaction are important for a better understanding of population dynamics and study of the biology of the individuals involved. This research aimed to analyze the interaction between the legume Desmodium uncinatum (Jacq.) DC., the butterfly Urbanus esta Evans 1952 and their parasitoids, as the third trophic level. D. uncinatum presents uncinate trichomes throughout extension stem as a defense structure against herbivores, trapping them. However, U. esta larvae can overcome this mechanical barrier, cutting the trichomes with its jaws developed, while sending silk, facilitating its displacement by the stem. Nevertheless, this kind of butterfly is controlled by egg parasitoids (Trichogramma sp. ¿ Chalcidoidea: Trichogrammatidae) and larvae parasitoids (Xanthocampoplex sp. ¿ Ichneumonidae and Chrysotachina sp. - Tachinidae). It was found that D. uncinatum has well-defined seasonality throughout the year, which a development peak in the rain season; at the beginning of the dry season the plant reproduces and, shortly after this phase the plant dries, leaving only the rhizome. This plant is most attacked by herbivores in the fall season, period before the dry season, because after this period plant dry and limit the development of herbivores. Therefore, meteorological variables influence the phenology of D. uncinatum, which influence the herbivores¿ dynamics and, consequently, of their parasitoids. In addition to the parasitoids regulating phytophagous insects, uncinate trichomes presents in this plant are efficient defense structures, trapping several species of herbivores. However, animals that remain adhered to the trichomes no significant nutritional contribution to the plant. Such as, thomisid spiders (Misumenops argenteus), which feed on insects adhering to trichomes and defecate on the plant, not nutritionally contribute to the plant significantly

Abstract:

This report investigates JACK Intelligent Agents and JACK Teams, and makes a comparison between the two. The main object was to find indications that point out which modeling paradigm that results in least development effort, and which one that is creating the most feasible platform regarding teamwork construction. The application domain is decision-support systems used in oil production. The aspects evaluated are development effort, degree of coupling, encapsulation of functionality, abstraction level, delegation of autonomy, and scalability. The solutions developed in the comparison had static team formations that included few teammembers. This caused less development effort by using JACK Intelligent Agents, and was the main reason why it was considerate to be the preferred modeling paradigm in this case. This was partly experienced because reasoning based on the actual team membership was not used in the JACK Teams version. The use of roles was used instead, causing more JACK entities where it could have been avoided. Dynamic team formations during runtime were not needed due to the reference problem introduced. Maintaince during runtime, for instance introducing new subteams and changing the role structure was not looked into. Introducing teams in large scale was not performed. These four factors could have caused a different result. The question is if JACK Teams shows its potential through the oil production system designed in this report.

Abstract:

WILLIAMS, SUNDEE KATHERINE. Jack Johnson: Victim or Villain. (Under the direction of Dr. Linda McMurry, Dr. Pamela Tyler, and Dr. Walter Jackson.)Jack Johnson reigned as the first African-American heavyweight champion of the world from 1908 until 1915. Unfortunately, unlike future African-American athletes such as Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson infuriated Americans of all ages, classes, races, and sexes with his arrogant attitude; his expensive and usually imported automobiles, champagne, and cigars; his designer clothes and jewelry; his frequent trips to Europe, usually in the company of at least one beautiful white woman; his inclination to gamble and race sports cars; and his many well-publicized nights of dancing and playing jazz on his prized seven foot bass fiddle. However, his worst offenses, during his reign as heavyweight champion, were his two marriages to and numerous affairs with white women. The purpose of the research has been to place Jack Johnson within the context of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century culture, economics, law, politics, race, and sex. The influences of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American commercialization, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization on perceptions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, and violence are investigated; and the implications of Jack Johnson?s defiance of racial and sexual constraints on the African-American community are interpreted.

A Cordia curassavica (Jacq.) Roem. & Schult.

Abstract:
"Jack Kerouac Does Not Lie" recounts my pilgrimage in the summer of 2000, from southwest Florida to a canyon beach in California where Jack Kerouac—as I had read in his Big Sur—lost his mind forty years earlier. I was heavily influenced. Kerouac's On the Road showed me what to do with myself. Big Sur showed me where to go. In the twentieth century Americans shifted their notions of the west coast from a means for sustenance to a symbol of post-war freedom. Kerouac seems to embody this momentum; the world and the burning spirit his work describes is a precursor to the sixties. His muse, Neal Cassady, is the common link—appearing as Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's first major work and later as himself in Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. My parents were a part of this westward yearning's last true surge in the early seventies, when they ventured cross-country and stayed out there for a time. They'd caught the tail end of the wave, and told me a bit about it. I was full of stories, mostly fiction. Sweating in my twenty year old conversion van with a big friend, Ben—whose goals were less "literary"—I sought to recreate the legends I had read, the movies I had seen, and the tales my parents had told me. I was on a mission; I wanted my trip to measure up. Ben was on vacation. Our folly is chronicled within; three weeks and four thousand miles of it.

Full text
Abstract:
JACK CLEMO: CARTOGRAPHER OF GRACE is an interpretative study of the novels and poetry of Jack Clemo. Chapter One traces, through published biographical material, the main personal influences upon the development of his vision. Chapters Two to Four show how ideas which first found publication in his published poetry only after 1951 had developed over a period of twenty years. The material for these chapters (mainly unpublished novels and juvenile poetry) was kindly loaned to the author by Mr Clemo. The published novels and first collection of verses are studied in the four following chapters, where it becomes clear that Clemo's initial, distinctive Calvinist view of life shows striking similarities with the neo-orthodox writings of Karl Earth (whom he had not then read) and the post-Barthian Jurgen Moltmann (whom Clemo has never read). These chapters offer an interpretation of Clemo's Calvinist vision and show it to be both theologically sound and, in terms of literature, unique. Clemo's contribution, it is seen, is in terms of his metaphoric use of landscape in a sustained refutation of the case for a natural theology; this, and his personal adaptation of the idea of election inspired by his admiration for Robert Browning. Substantial changes of poetic technique appear in the collection Cactus on Carmel, and these, and their sources, are accounted for in Chapter Nine. Chapters Ten to Twelve trace the development of Clemo's poetry away from its pre-occupation with the landscape of South- East Cornwall, the expansion of genre to include portraiture and dramatic monologue, and account for these developments in terms of Clemo's life-long determination to marry. This determination is seen to be the most important influence upon Clemo's life, shaping all the work he has produced. Chapter Thirteen examines the poetry in which Clemo challenges head on the materialism of the century. The final chapter is a detailed study of the worksheets of poems Clemo wrote over some twenty five years, and thus compares the processes of production adopted after the poet became blind with those employed earlier.

Abstract:
In Jack London: Landscape, Love, and Place, American Studies theories and methods formed the prime basis for analysis of London's biography, historical context, and literary significance. Particularly, the ideas of agrarianism, the Turner Thesis moment, Western literature, American masculinity, Victorian ideals, and sustainable farm practices in America were used to understand London's motivations for writing and creating his farm, his influence on American literature, and his texts' abilities to open avenues between literature and place-based education. Key concepts that influenced how London's works could be incorporated into and applied to didactic theory included David Sobel's seminal works in place-based education. The principle idea behind this thesis was to analyze one author and two of his works in a wider theoretical context, and then, to use that analysis to apply the theories to practical methods of educating future students in sustainable practices, place-based learning, and future work in understanding their impact on the ecosystems of their local communities and landscapes.

Tracy, Janet. "Jack Epperson: A Modern Folk Healer." TopSCHOLAR®, 1991. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2921.

Full text
Abstract:
This study in folk medicine focuses on a modern magico-religious folk healer named Jack Epperson, who utilizes the principles of bioenergetics or placing hands on an ill person's body and directing healing energy into blocked channels to heal, in the context of the small Alaskan community in which he lives and practices. The thesis is divided into seven chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. To fit Jack Epperson into the full spectrum of folk medicine, it is necessary to comprehend fully the two categories of folk medicine: herbal or natural medicine, and magico-religious healing or shamanism. The first chapter defines these categories, places Epperson within the realm of magico-religious healing, and describes the community in which he lives. In the second chapter, a thorough description of Epperson's emergence as a healer and subsequent training with his mentor, a woman named Patricia Sun, is given. This chapter also contains extensive biographical information which relates his life experiences to his decision to become a healer. As Epperson continued on his path into magico-religious healing, he took many physical and spiritual journeys venturing into the occult. Chapter Three describes these journeys and provides case studies on healing situations. Chapter Four continues with case studies in curing but limits these memorates to Epperson's experiences in Homer with his patients. Chapter Five establishes Epperson as a modern shaman within the traditional background of shamanism in other cultures. The next two chapters describe the role of the patient in folk medicine providing interviews with two of Epperson's patients as well as the researcher as patient. Motives for enlisting the aid of a magico-religious healer are examined in these two chapters as well. The concluding chapter focuses on the importance of Jack Epperson and modern folk healers like him in our society. The prevailing question throughout the research and writing concerned the reason why such healers are reemerging in an increasingly technologically advanced society. With the strides the conventional medical establishment have made, it is important to understand why people are returning in increasing numbers to magico-religious healers. Healing is a profoundly cultural activity and research into folk healers provides information about human behavior and thought processes that occur when faced with traumatic illness or injury.

Abstract:
My dissertation, Letters from Jack and Other Cadavers, developed out of my interest in using persona, narrative forms, and historical details collected through thorough research to transform personal experience and emotions in my poems. The central series of poems, "Letters from Jack," is written in the voice of Jack the Ripper and set up as a series of poems-as-letters to the police who chased him. The Ripper's sense of self and his motivations are troubled by his search for a muse as the poems become love poems, contrasting the brutality of the historical murders and the atmosphere of late 19th century London with a charismatic speaker not unlike those of Browning's Dramatic Monologues. The dissertation's preface further explores my desire for a level of personal removal while crafting poems in order to temper sentimentality. Drawing on Wallace Stevens's notion that "Sentimentality is failed emotion" and Tony Hoagland's assessment that fear of sentimentality can turn young poets away from narrative forms, I examine my own poems along with those of Scott Cairns, Tim Seibles, and Albert Goldbarth to derive conclusions on the benefits distance, persona, narrative, and detail to downplay excessive emotion and the intrusion of the personal. Poems from the manuscript have appeared in The Beloit Poetry Journal, Sybil's Garage, The North Texas Review, and The Sheridan Edwards Review.

Abstract:
In this project, I develop a comparative reading of a series of "personal narratives" produced by Jack London, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Jean-Paul Sartre and Jack Kerouac. My purpose is to analyze how these writers all question their own social status and function as authors, while denying literature’s value and efficiency in aesthetic, politic, and commercial terms. Scrutinizing different figures of these writers which their works offer, I argue that all these literary works are converged in an attempt at defining their positions as writers within their works, societies, and at characterizing their way to exist as human beings. This thesis thematically refers to three great mythical figures often associated with the figure of the artist: Prometheus, Narcissus, and Daedalus. Through Prometheus, I examine the status of writers that think themselves endowed with an almighty speech; through Narcissus, I examine the problems that such a way of investing literature with power generates; through Daedalus, I examine the attempts made by the writers to access a new status within ordinary humanity. In my conclusions, I examine how these writers’ attempt at reforming their authorial status while denying the efficiency of literature, and for this purpose I consider a variety of later literary and visual works in which London, Céline, Sartre and Kerouac are represented

Abstract:
This dissertation is a study about belonging among the Fatanis who are caught between two places, namely Makkah and Jawi. Using historical and ethnographic data collected during two years of transnational fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Malaysia, this dissertation shows that belonging is constituted as much by ideas of community, namely home and the homeland, as it is by lived experience as well as practical and cultural factors. Its central argument is that belonging is unstable, often incomplete, and always contingent owing to the dynamic quality of social life. Belonging is a condition that is volatile. It is not something that can be retained perpetually. A person might experience comfort from belonging someplace at a particular moment, while yearning to be somewhere else simultaneously. Thus, longing often accompanies belonging. In the late-eighteenth century, some Fatani men and women left Patani, on the northern Malay Peninsula, and sailed northwest until they arrived at Makkah. These migrants left in search of safety and inspiration as Siamese armies pillaged their homeland in attempts to depopulate Siam’s recalcitrant tributary kingdom from 1785-1839. Almost two and half centuries later, in contemporary times, the Fatanis are once again on the move. This time, unfavorable conditions in Makkah are the causes of reverse migration to the homeland, which the Fatanis refer to as Jawi. For the Fatanis, who are caught between Makkah and Jawi, belonging is elusive. Makkah, the place and society that many of them consider home, is familiar, but also where their right of residency as foreigners is fragile. On the other hand, Jawi, the homeland, is foreign to the Fatanis despite their status as nationals. From one page to another, this text tells the Fatanis’ stories of pain and yearning, but also of their ingenuity and perseverance.

This work describes the identification of volatile constituents from leaves and flowers of Geoffroea spinosa Jacq. and the isolation of non-volatile constituents of its stem bark, stem wood, and root wood. This specie occurs on the riversides in Northeast Brazil and produces fruits which can be used as food. Its flowers are usually used in the form of tea to heal diarrhea and menstrual disorders. In spite of G. spinosa to be very important to the Northeastern people, as far as we know, any paper about its phytochemistry study was up to now published. The Lauric (66,54%), capric (15,39%) and miristic (13,11%) acids were the major compounds in the essential oils of its flowers, while its leaves presented palmitic acid (24,93%) and the diterpenes geranil linanool (14,97%) and phytol (17,86%) in higher concentration. The evaluation of the biological activity from the flowers of G. spinosa presented a significant nematicidal activity against the Meloidogyne incognita , but in the opposite, the volatile material of its leaves was inactive against the same nematode. The chromatographic analyses of the ethanolic extracts of the stem bark and stem wood allowed the isolation of lupeol and sucrose, respectively and the study of ethanolic extract of the root bark resulted the isolation of a mixture of -sitosterol, stigmasterol and their glycosides in addition of the oleanan triterpene, the 3--acetoxiolean-12-en-28-oic acid, and a lactone called 3-hydroxy-1,5-dioxaciclohentriacontan-6-one. The last one never had been describe in the literature. The structural determination of the isolated metabolites, was performed by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of Hydrogen-1 and Carbon-13 (13C and 1H NMR - uni and two-dimensional). The oils were analyzed by GCL/MS and the identification of the components was initially done by using a MS library search with retention indices as a pre-selection routine followed by visual confirmation to reported standard MS data obtained from literature.

Abstract:
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo
Pithecoctenium echinatum belongs to the family Bignoniaceae, popularly known as comb monkey used in folk medicine for inflammations, rheumatism, skin infections, headaches, cleanses the blood and calming. The objective of this study was to characterize morphological and anatomical fruit of P. echinatum; to determine the physico-chemical quality of the plant drug, isolating chemical compounds of secondary metabolism, as well as to investigate antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and analyzing biochemical parameters of liver and kidney toxicity in the crude extract (CE) of seeds of P. echinatum. This species has bicarpelar ovary with the presence of trichomes, crystals and emergencies. It has parietal placentation. The rudiment seminal anatropous, unitegmic and tenuinucellate. The ring nectary has stomatal complexes and trichomes. The epicarp has cutin with the presence of lenticels, estomatíferos and complex emergencies. The outer mesocarp has parenchyma cells, stone cells, sclerified cells and crystals. The endocarp is represented by a single cell layer is not sclerified. The seed is winged and exotestal. The endothelium and the endosperm are the membranaceous embryo. The mesophyll has chemical compounds such as alkaloids, fixed oils, volatile oils, scarce presence of starch and consists of pectic walls. In physico-chemical characterization, using pharmacopoeia tests was used dried vegetable drug, noting that no significant variation of the samples collected in different locations. The hydroethanolic extract 70% seeds of P. echinatum presented secondary metabolic compounds such as steroids and/or triterpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, tannins, catechin, phenolic hydroxyl heterosides cardiotonic and volatile oils. Assay polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins were determined by spectroscopic in the CE and fractions. P. echinatum showed antioxidant potential (IC50 131.84 mg/ml) in acetate fraction by the DPPH method and antimicrobial activity to P. aeruginosa, P. zophii and C. albicans by the microdilution method (MIC). From the CE the seeds of P. echinatum we performed the isolation and identification of hesperetin and diometin. These flavonoids were isolated from P. echinatum first. The compounds were determined and analyzed by HPLC / MS and NMR and their spectra compared with the literature. The anti-inflammatory activity of the CE was assayed by the induction of inflammation for cotton rolls and serum taken from rats submitted to the bioassay, in which were administered orally by 300mg/kg/day of CE for 6 consecutive days and compared to nimesulide (5mg/kg/day) and negative control (propylene glycol 20% v/v). The results showed that the CE of P. echinatum showed significant inhibition of inflammation of 24.7%, similar to the inhibition obtained by the group of animals treated with nimesulide 21.4% compared to controls. The hematological parameters showed an increase in the number of leukocytes and decreased of corpuscular medium volume, while AST, ALT and creatinine showed no significant difference in the use of CE compared with the control group propylene glycol. Therefore, the physico-chemical parameters established for P. echinatum enable quality control of drugs of this kind, and this presented antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Furthermore, no evidence of a hepatotocidade and nephrotoxicity in the experimental conditions tested.
A semente é alada e exotestal. O endotélio e o endosperma constituem o envoltório membranáceo do embrião.

Abstract:
There are two contradictory attitudes in Jack London, the one is socialist, the other evolutionist. My aim in this thesis is to show that the evolutionary ideology is antithetic with the socialist ideology and ideal as i understand them, i. E. Cooperation, the coming of a new social order in which rivalries, vital competition will give way to social harmony and solidarity. The struggle for life and the survival of the fittest which are the basis of the evolutionist system are opposed to the ideal of the socialist. Yet Jack London obviously advocates both ideologies, which explains the use of the concept of darwino-marxist paradox. But it appears from the study of his works that he is more of an evolutionist, more of a Darwinist with pronounced nietzschean leanings than he is a socialist. Anyhow his violent anti-non-Anglo-Saxon, anti-brown and anti-black racism invalidates any claims of his to socialism, synonymous of universal brotherhood

We study the sl(3) web algebra via morphisms on foams. A pre-foam is a cobordism between two webs that contains singular arcs, which are sets of points whose neighborhoods are homeomorphic to the cross-product of the letter "Y'' and the unit interval. Pre-foams may have a distinguished point, and it can be moved around as long as it does not cross a singular arc. A foam is an isotopy class of pre-foams modulo a set of certain relations involving dots on the pre-foams. Composition in Foams is achieved by stacking pre-foams. We compute the cohomology ring of the sl(3) web algebra and apply a functor from the cohomology ring of the sl(3) web algebra to {\bf Foams}. Afterwards, we use this to study the $\mathfrak{sl}(3)$ web algebra via morphisms on foams.

Abstract: An anuran amphibia community was studied in a semi-permanent pond located in an open area on the ¿Serra do Japi", São Paulo, Brazil. The main hypothesis consisted in the existence of resources partitioning by anuran adults or larvae utilizing the same pond for reproductlon and 1arva1 development. Field work was developed from November, 1984 to April, 1986.The pond has never dried up, although very little water occured in the middle of August. The period from June to August was consldered the dry season, and from september to May the wet one. Ten anuran species of three families utilized the pond. Physical factors such as rain and air temperature (all over the year) and wind, thunder and moonlight (momentaneously) influenced the reproduction activities. Seasonal isolation seems to be important although most of the species presented vocalization and reproduction periods overlapped during the wet season. In the dry season, when there is reduction of the water volume, which is disadvantageous to tadpoles development, few species are reproductively active. Vocalizations were not necessarily associated to reproduction. In such cases reproduction may have not occurred due to the inexistence of available mature females, or the call could be acting to congregate the species individuals for reproduction... Abstract:
This Dissertation, entitled Jack and the Blue Flower: An Aural Myth, establishes a new approach to formal design, referred to henceforth as a Musical Personograph. This 17-minute work presents a highly developed musical portrait of an individual, in this case British writer and philosopher-theologian C. S. (“Jack”) Lewis. The conceptual and compositional designs are a synthesis of (1) the core principles of Personography, a psychological discipline that seeks to empirically determine the ways in which an individual establishes self-identity via an internalized and evolving life-story; (2) leitmotif and thematic transformation techniques, extended and expanded to include not only melody but harmony; rhythm; polyrhythm and polymeter; pitch centers; orchestration; tonality, polytonality, and atonality; (3) stratified textures consisting of perceptually distinct layers of musical material that contribute fundamentally to the overall shape and form of the work. Novel compositional principles applied include (1) an exploration of the expressive possibilities of an updated approach to programmatic music (musical materials with relationships to extra-musical symbols); (2) the use of intrinsically musical narrative and/or dramatic structures—that is, the establishment of a compositional design that imparts a narrative and/or dramatic structure to a work that functions independently of any imposed extra-musical associations. This work’s intrinsically musical narrative is accomplished via forward- and backward-pointing references (in time) to audibly recognizable musical material of primary importance, called Musical Aspects and Narrative Agents; changes to the musical context framing said Aspects and Agents as the work progresses; the use of multiple musical languages and rhetorical devices which, through shared cultural associations, enable the listener to assign dramatic and/or emotional values to the musical narrative as it unfolds.

Collacciani, Elena.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this Master's thesis is to study how generational identities are conveyed in the reception of two debut novels, Jack by Ulf Lundell and Allt by Martina Lowden. Both novels have been considered literary and social expressions of their generations. The empirical material consists of 14 reviews in Swedish daily press from the time of publication of Jack and Allt, respectively. The thesis revolves around the following questions: How is the generational identity defined in terms of lifestyle practices, milieus and other social circumstances? To what extent are structured factors such as gender and class considered? How are the critics considering the reflexive project of the self? I base the theoretical framework on Anthony Giddens' theories about identity creation in the late modern society. Idea analysis is used in the classification and analysis of the textual material. The model of analysis is based on factors that by Giddens are considered to affect the identity process. The result of the analysis shows that the generational identities expressed in the two novels appear very different. In the reviews discussing Jack, the identity is based on destructive lifestyle practices and is closely related to the political environment. In the reviews of Allt the identity is connected to a literary main theme that is constructed in relation to mediated influences. The conclusion suggests an increased understanding of the individual identity as a result of a reflexive process.

This work describes the phytochemical investigation of Hamelia patens (Rubiaceae) native from Guaramiranga montain, CearÃ, Brazil. Sucessive chromatographic treatment of the ethanol extract of leaves led to the isolation of the pentaciclic oxindole alkaloids pteropodine, isopteropodine, palmirine, and the new isopalmirine, besides the flavonoid kaempferol l-3-α-O-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-6)-β-D-galactopyranoside. The study of the ethanol extract of the stems led to the isolation of the steroids β-sitosterol and stigmasterol as mixture, stigmast-4-en-3,6-dione, and the triterpene ursolic acid. The ethanol extract of the trunk yielded vanillic acid and the β-sitosterol and stigmasterol glucosilated. The isolation of the chemical constituents were performed by the use of chromatographic techniques, including flash cromatography, thin layer crohromatography, preparative crhomatography, and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The strucutral charactherization were performed by the use of infrared, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, including one (1H NMR, 13C NMR and DEPT 135) and two-bidimensional pulse sequences (HMBC, HSQC, COSY e NOESY), and comparison with literature data.
