Abstract:
In Jack London: Landscape, Love, and Place, American Studies theories and methods formed the prime basis for analysis of London's biography, historical context, and literary significance. Particularly, the ideas of agrarianism, the Turner Thesis moment, Western literature, American masculinity, Victorian ideals, and sustainable farm practices in America were used to understand London's motivations for writing and creating his farm, his influence on American literature, and his texts' abilities to open avenues between literature and place-based education.

Abstract:

This thesis documents the significant involvement of London's fiction with contemporary culture. In doing so it calls particular attention to his intellectual restlessness and to his methodology of adoption and adaptation. I argue that London combined his role as a successful popular writer with a steadfast commitment to experimentation and innovation, producing works that were and are complex and challenging. In the first chapter I analyse the circumstances that contributed to London's successful emergence into the literary marketplace at the turn of the century. I examine the genesis of Lond

This chapter explores London’s two famous dog novels. The Call of the Wild and White Fang are analysed in relation to the themes of initiation, adaptation, captivity, and freedom. Particular emphasis is given to the conflict between the formation of social dominance hierarchies and the urge toward solidarity and cooperation—a key conflict that runs throughout London’s work. The two novels are also considered in relation to a phenomenon the fascinated London: The ability of an organism to override biologically inscribed behavioural scripts and adapt to changing environments. Seagoing craft fill Jack London’s works. In his writing and his storytelling, London was always conscious of his audience. He gleefully pokes fun at the incomprehensibility of nautical terminology, at the same time as he embraces it. London also questions the popular view that the language of mariners is full of wicked oaths, blasphemy, and vulgarity. He can certainly populate his sea fiction with oaths, but what he captures so beautifully, and far more often, is the exultation felt by a sailor for a well-sailed vessel. This article is concerned with the study of the role of contaminated speech in revealing the relationship between the characters of a work of fiction. The material used for the study is the works of Jack London — “Martin Eden” (1909) and “The Scarlet Plague” (1910). The concept of norm was introduced as the main premise for the study, which was interpreted differently by the participants of the dialogue. In the course of the research, two communicative models associated with different levels of education of the communicants were identified — the dialogue-argument and the dialogue-explanation.
