Abstract:

Abstract:
Alternative reproductive tactics are widespread in fishes. In Pacific salmon, males either become a competitive hooknose, or a sneaker jack, which is undesirable in aquaculture when overabundant. Juveniles often experience accelerated growth prior to becoming jacks, potentially caused by increased competitiveness. We tested the behaviour of hatchery-reared Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in fresh water and after 1 year in salt water. We also tested the effects of freshwater rearing density (100, 50, or 35 fish per 200 L), food ration (high or low), sire (jack or hooknose) for jacks, hooknoses, and females with and without confirmed jack siblings. Sisters of jacks were further identified to test whether females closely related to jacks also showed behavioural differences. Overall, jacks did not behave as predicted; rearing conditions were the strongest determinant of behaviour, and jack sisters behaved differently than jacks and other females. Our study underscores the complexities of jack behaviour, and of females closely related to jacks, at all development stages and supports the use of behavioural screenings to regulate jacking rates in hatcheries by identifying jack sisters.

Abstract:
The Upper Paraná River floodplain is inserted in a region of the Mata Atlântica biome, which is a critical area to preserve. Due to the scarcity of researches about the chiropterofauna in this region, the present study investigated species richness and abundance of bats in remnants from the stational semidecidual forest of the Upper Paraná River, southern Brazil. Samplings were taken every month, from January to December 2006, using 32 mist nets with 8.0 x 2.5 m, resulting in 640 m²/h and totaling a capture effort of 87,040 m²/h. In order to estimate the species richness, the following estimators were employed Chao1 and Jack2. During the study, a total of 563 individuals belonging to 17 species (Artibeus planirostris, Artibeus lituratus, Carollia perspicillata, Platyrrhinus lineatus, Sturnira lilium, Artibeus fimbriatus, Myotis nigricans, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus obscurus, Noctilio albiventris, Phylostomus discolor, Phylostomus hastatus, Chrotopterus auritus, Lasiurus ega, Chiroderma villosum, Pygoderma bilabiatum and Lasiurus blossevillii) were captured. The estimated richness curves tended to stabilize, indicating that most of the species were sampled. Captured species represented 10% of the taxa recorded in Brazil and 28% in Paraná State, revealing the importance of this area for the diversity of bats. These findings indicate the need to determine actions aiming to restrict human activities in these forest fragments, in order to minimize anthropogenic impacts on the chiropterofauna.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction In January 2013 was received in our lab service a bone marrow sample for cytogenetic analysis. The 61 years old female patient presents an elevated white blood cell count (118,000 x10³/mm³) and clinical diagnosis as Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). According the medical information the treatment began with hydroxyurea 3g daily and allopurinol 300mg daily. Methods We proceeded with cytogenetic examination of the patient’s bone marrow aspirate by conventional G-banding analysis performed on unstimulated short-term cultures (24 hrs). FISH for BCR/ABL translocation was tested using a dual fusion dual color probe. Because of the sample stability we were unable to performed RT-PCR test. Results Chromosome analysis showed the translocation (9;22)(p24;q11.2) as a sole abnormality in 100% (20/20) of analyzed metaphases. Chronic myeloid leukemia presents as a specific chromosomal abnormality the Philadelphia chromosome, t(9;22)(q34;q11) which is different from the results obtained where the region of translocation of chromosome 9 was p24 instead of the classic q34. This result suggests it is BCR/JACK2 translocation. The FISH analysis showed the presence of a complex Ph chromosome: ABL con BCRx1 (one fusion) and BCRx2;ABLx2. Conclusion The patient took imatinib without answer. She is still in clinical monitoring with persistent hyperleucocytosis and the treatment is following with hydroxyurea 500mg daily and Interferon 5000 UI three times a week. Further molecular and cytogenetic tests will be performed in a second sample to contribute with evaluation of disease progression and monitoring treatment response. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
X-screw, a load-sensitive linear actuator that we have proposed, has many desirable characteristics, but one drawback is that the linear motion is much slower than a conventional lead screw. When the axial load is small, the transmission efficiency of X-screw is approximately the same as that of a lead screw since the transmitted power is low in this case. Therefore we have developed a Dual Mode version of X-screw called ""DM X-screw"". This mechanism is able to automatically switch between lead screw mode and X-screw mode in response to the axial load. This feature makes it possible to apply DM X-screw to many mechanical systems. We have used this mechanism in a pantograph jack that makes use of its dual mode loadsensitive variable transmission properties. This jack can be operated with a small input force and unlike conventional jacks, several of these jacks can be used in combination to overcome the output force limitations of normal pantograph jacks.

Abstract:
IIn the present study, Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring technique is applied in order to characterize the brick masonry of two important military buildings located in Northern Italy: the barracks of Alessandria and Boves. The internal brick masonry walls of the two barracks object of the study are tested by two double flat-jack systems, in order to analyze the compressive strength of the structural material. Flat-jack testing is a versatile and powerful technique that provides significant information on the mechanical properties of historical constructions. The first applications of this technique on some historical monuments clearly showed its great potential. The flat-jack test method is only slightly destructive, and when double jacks are used, this test works according to the same principle as a standard compressive test. The difference is that it is performed in situ and the load is applied by means of two flat-jacks instead of the loading platens. During the tests, the stress-strain relationship of the masonry is determined by gradually increasing the pressure applied by the flat-jacks in the course of three loading-unloading cycles. Moreover, AE technique is coupled to the flat-jack testing, in order to assess the extent of damage in the masonry texture. Thus, AE technique makes it possible to highlight critical phenomena and fracture mechanics scale effects in the masonry by identifying the critical conditions, not entrusted to an analysis of the loading process (compression or shear), rather depending primarily on the distribution and evolution of crack patterns.

Abstract:
The paper reports the problems in automation of designing hydraulic jacks of oneway action. The analysis of methods of computeraided design systems creation is carried out and the algorithms of allowing the formation of a system for computer-aided design of hydraulic jacks are under development. A conceptual approach to a jack choice depending on conditions of its operation allows reducing time for the analysis of requirements specification. In the course of the work with the system there were developed eight basic modules of the system. These modules allow reducing considerably time for the technical documentation development essential for manufacturing jacks with oneway operation and decreasing other costs in the course of designing. Databases created store all the essential information for the proper work of basis modules and also that of standard products, 3 D parametric models and associative drawings. The system developed meets all the requirements imposed on CADs. It is applicable at enterprises engaged in production and repair of hydraulic equipment. The Hydraulic Jack CAD was tested at a functioning enterprise and justified hopes.

Abstract:
Several available free software audio solutions were analyzed, and Jackdmp—a C++ reimplementation of the renowned JACK Audio Connection Kit—was selected as the most appropriate solution for a real-time audio architecture on DROPS. The JACK sound architecture provides the lowest processing latency possible on a desktop computer for a given set of sound card parameters. It reduces the latency jitter caused by software to zero and synchronizes streams at sample accuracy. A real-time admission scheme for JACK clients is proposed. The execution time of different typical JACK clients was analyzed with measurements to validate the assumptions the proposal is based on, but also to gain further knowledge about their timing behavior. The measurements showed that the condition set by Paul Davis—the time to process a client must be a linear function of the buffer size—holds for all tested clients. Jackdmp was ported to DROPS. The developed design of the port and its implementation is documented here. Measurements showed that—although the real-time performance of the Linux kernel is continuously being improved in the mainline and on special external branches—DROPS can provide a signaling latency that is two times lower on average than the values that can be achieved on the same machine running with a low latency patched Linux kernel. Thus, it can be stated that DROPS is well-suited for real-time audio processing and that the pursued path to use it as the foundation of a truly real-time capable audio workstation should be followed

Abstract:

Abstract:

This report investigates JACK Intelligent Agents and JACK Teams, and makes a comparison between the two. The main object was to find indications that point out which modeling paradigm that results in least development effort, and which one that is creating the most feasible platform regarding teamwork construction. The application domain is decision-support systems used in oil production. The aspects evaluated are development effort, degree of coupling, encapsulation of functionality, abstraction level, delegation of autonomy, and scalability. The solutions developed in the comparison had static team formations that included few teammembers. This caused less development effort by using JACK Intelligent Agents, and was the main reason why it was considerate to be the preferred modeling paradigm in this case. This was partly experienced because reasoning based on the actual team membership was not used in the JACK Teams version. The use of roles was used instead, causing more JACK entities where it could have been avoided. Dynamic team formations during runtime were not needed due to the reference problem introduced. Maintaince during runtime, for instance introducing new subteams and changing the role structure was not looked into. Introducing teams in large scale was not performed. These four factors could have caused a different result. The question is if JACK Teams shows its potential through the oil production system designed in this report.

Abstract:

WILLIAMS, SUNDEE KATHERINE. Jack Johnson: Victim or Villain. (Under the direction of Dr. Linda McMurry, Dr. Pamela Tyler, and Dr. Walter Jackson.)Jack Johnson reigned as the first African-American heavyweight champion of the world from 1908 until 1915. Unfortunately, unlike future African-American athletes such as Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson infuriated Americans of all ages, classes, races, and sexes with his arrogant attitude; his expensive and usually imported automobiles, champagne, and cigars; his designer clothes and jewelry; his frequent trips to Europe, usually in the company of at least one beautiful white woman; his inclination to gamble and race sports cars; and his many well-publicized nights of dancing and playing jazz on his prized seven foot bass fiddle. However, his worst offenses, during his reign as heavyweight champion, were his two marriages to and numerous affairs with white women. The purpose of the research has been to place Jack Johnson within the context of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century culture, economics, law, politics, race, and sex. The influences of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American commercialization, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization on perceptions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, and violence are investigated; and the implications of Jack Johnson?s defiance of racial and sexual constraints on the African-American community are interpreted.

This paper considers the issue of gaining access to the full extent of a vessel’s bottom plating whilst it is dry docked. The current methods of secondary docking positions and block removals are reviewed and a new approach using jacks is presented. The development of an initial version of the new approach is described. This covers the elements of removal and replacement concept, general arrangement, limitations of the existing equipment, removal equipment and wood compression properties. These aspects are then brought together to create the requirements for the jacks. Operational experience on the first three dockings using the initial version at Babcock’s Devonport site is discussed. The limitations of the initial approach are quantified and a fully developed solution which allows 100% block removal is presented. The paper concludes that the new approach of using jack-able super blocks provides benefits to both the shipyard and the ship operator. This project has been achieved through new research and the application of a sound knowledge of engineering and tolerances. The intellectual property of the paper is the subject of a pending patent.

Abstract:
The Horn Mountain Production Spar was installed in 5,400 feet of water in June 2002. This was the deepest floating production unit at that time. A comprehensive instrumentation program was initiated to measure spar and riser responses (Edwards et al, DOT 2003), while motion comparisons were presented on previous publication (Halkyard et al, OMAE 2004). The present paper discusses the results of these measurements and compares with analytical predictions of spar mooring tension during hurricane Isidore in September 2002. Particular attention has been placed on the importance of Coulomb friction between wire chain and the fairlead bearing to the dynamic tension of mooring lines. Mooring tensions were measured at chain jack location (inboard tension), while analytical models computed those tensions at the fairlead location (outboard tension). Our conclusion is that there is excellent agreement between field measurements and computed tensions at the chain jacks when fairlead friction is included, and when the vessel motions are accurately predicted. Ignoring fairlead friction results in a slightly conservative estimate for the tension at the chain jack. This has been the standard practice in all spar designs to date.
