Abstract:
Alternative reproductive tactics are widespread in fishes. In Pacific salmon, males either become a competitive hooknose, or a sneaker jack, which is undesirable in aquaculture when overabundant. Juveniles often experience accelerated growth prior to becoming jacks, potentially caused by increased competitiveness. We tested the behaviour of hatchery-reared Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in fresh water and after 1 year in salt water. We also tested the effects of freshwater rearing density (100, 50, or 35 fish per 200 L), food ration (high or low), sire (jack or hooknose) for jacks, hooknoses, and females with and without confirmed jack siblings. Sisters of jacks were further identified to test whether females closely related to jacks also showed behavioural differences. Overall, jacks did not behave as predicted; rearing conditions were the strongest determinant of behaviour, and jack sisters behaved differently than jacks and other females. Our study underscores the complexities of jack behaviour, and of females closely related to jacks, at all development stages and supports the use of behavioural screenings to regulate jacking rates in hatcheries by identifying jack sisters.

Abstract:
The Upper Paraná River floodplain is inserted in a region of the Mata Atlântica biome, which is a critical area to preserve. Due to the scarcity of researches about the chiropterofauna in this region, the present study investigated species richness and abundance of bats in remnants from the stational semidecidual forest of the Upper Paraná River, southern Brazil. Samplings were taken every month, from January to December 2006, using 32 mist nets with 8.0 x 2.5 m, resulting in 640 m²/h and totaling a capture effort of 87,040 m²/h. In order to estimate the species richness, the following estimators were employed Chao1 and Jack2. During the study, a total of 563 individuals belonging to 17 species (Artibeus planirostris, Artibeus lituratus, Carollia perspicillata, Platyrrhinus lineatus, Sturnira lilium, Artibeus fimbriatus, Myotis nigricans, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus obscurus, Noctilio albiventris, Phylostomus discolor, Phylostomus hastatus, Chrotopterus auritus, Lasiurus ega, Chiroderma villosum, Pygoderma bilabiatum and Lasiurus blossevillii) were captured. The estimated richness curves tended to stabilize, indicating that most of the species were sampled. Captured species represented 10% of the taxa recorded in Brazil and 28% in Paraná State, revealing the importance of this area for the diversity of bats. These findings indicate the need to determine actions aiming to restrict human activities in these forest fragments, in order to minimize anthropogenic impacts on the chiropterofauna.

Abstract Introduction In January 2013 was received in our lab service a bone marrow sample for cytogenetic analysis. The 61 years old female patient presents an elevated white blood cell count (118,000 x10³/mm³) and clinical diagnosis as Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). According the medical information the treatment began with hydroxyurea 3g daily and allopurinol 300mg daily. Methods We proceeded with cytogenetic examination of the patient’s bone marrow aspirate by conventional G-banding analysis performed on unstimulated short-term cultures (24 hrs). FISH for BCR/ABL translocation was tested using a dual fusion dual color probe. Because of the sample stability we were unable to performed RT-PCR test. Results Chromosome analysis showed the translocation (9;22)(p24;q11.2) as a sole abnormality in 100% (20/20) of analyzed metaphases. Chronic myeloid leukemia presents as a specific chromosomal abnormality the Philadelphia chromosome, t(9;22)(q34;q11) which is different from the results obtained where the region of translocation of chromosome 9 was p24 instead of the classic q34. This result suggests it is BCR/JACK2 translocation. The FISH analysis showed the presence of a complex Ph chromosome: ABL con BCRx1 (one fusion) and BCRx2;ABLx2. Conclusion The patient took imatinib without answer. She is still in clinical monitoring with persistent hyperleucocytosis and the treatment is following with hydroxyurea 500mg daily and Interferon 5000 UI three times a week. Further molecular and cytogenetic tests will be performed in a second sample to contribute with evaluation of disease progression and monitoring treatment response. Abstract:
X-screw, a load-sensitive linear actuator that we have proposed, has many desirable characteristics, but one drawback is that the linear motion is much slower than a conventional lead screw. When the axial load is small, the transmission efficiency of X-screw is approximately the same as that of a lead screw since the transmitted power is low in this case. Therefore we have developed a Dual Mode version of X-screw called ""DM X-screw"". This mechanism is able to automatically switch between lead screw mode and X-screw mode in response to the axial load. This feature makes it possible to apply DM X-screw to many mechanical systems. We have used this mechanism in a pantograph jack that makes use of its dual mode loadsensitive variable transmission properties. This jack can be operated with a small input force and unlike conventional jacks, several of these jacks can be used in combination to overcome the output force limitations of normal pantograph jacks.

Abstract:
IIn the present study, Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring technique is applied in order to characterize the brick masonry of two important military buildings located in Northern Italy: the barracks of Alessandria and Boves. The internal brick masonry walls of the two barracks object of the study are tested by two double flat-jack systems, in order to analyze the compressive strength of the structural material. Flat-jack testing is a versatile and powerful technique that provides significant information on the mechanical properties of historical constructions. The first applications of this technique on some historical monuments clearly showed its great potential. The flat-jack test method is only slightly destructive, and when double jacks are used, this test works according to the same principle as a standard compressive test. The difference is that it is performed in situ and the load is applied by means of two flat-jacks instead of the loading platens. During the tests, the stress-strain relationship of the masonry is determined by gradually increasing the pressure applied by the flat-jacks in the course of three loading-unloading cycles. Moreover, AE technique is coupled to the flat-jack testing, in order to assess the extent of damage in the masonry texture. Thus, AE technique makes it possible to highlight critical phenomena and fracture mechanics scale effects in the masonry by identifying the critical conditions, not entrusted to an analysis of the loading process (compression or shear), rather depending primarily on the distribution and evolution of crack patterns.

Abstract:
The paper reports the problems in automation of designing hydraulic jacks of oneway action. The analysis of methods of computeraided design systems creation is carried out and the algorithms of allowing the formation of a system for computer-aided design of hydraulic jacks are under development. A conceptual approach to a jack choice depending on conditions of its operation allows reducing time for the analysis of requirements specification. In the course of the work with the system there were developed eight basic modules of the system. These modules allow reducing considerably time for the technical documentation development essential for manufacturing jacks with oneway operation and decreasing other costs in the course of designing. Databases created store all the essential information for the proper work of basis modules and also that of standard products, 3 D parametric models and associative drawings. The system developed meets all the requirements imposed on CADs. It is applicable at enterprises engaged in production and repair of hydraulic equipment. The Hydraulic Jack CAD was tested at a functioning enterprise and justified hopes.

Abstract:
As with other species, frequency-dependent selection during reproduction has long been proposed as an important mechanism in maintaining alternative male reproductive phenotypes in Pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus spp.). Jack salmon mature one year earlier than the youngest females in a population and are much smaller than older “adult” males. We tested the hypothesis that mating success of both phenotypes is consistent with the frequency-dependent selection model. By holding male density constant and varying the frequency of adults and jacks in eight separate breeding groups, we found that adult male access to females, participation in spawning events, and adult-to-fry reproductive success increased with their decreasing frequency in a breeding group. Jacks exhibited the same pattern (increasing success with decreasing frequency), although the relationships were not as strong as for adults. Overall, jack and adult males mated with a similar number of females, but jacks sired only 20% of all offspring. Observational data suggested that adult males benefited from sperm precedence associated with their ability to court females and enter the nest first at the time of spawning. Our work provides the first experimental evidence of frequency-dependent selection during mating in the family Salmonidae.

Abstract:
A screw jack is a device used to lift the vehicle above the ground level in order to ease repairs. A power screw is designed to translate radial motion to linear motion. Many users are familiar with manually operated car jack which still included as standard equipment in cars. A car jack is an important device in vehicle to change flat tire in our journey. Every year near about 160 injuries are associated with car jacks. The correct use of jacks can prevent the accidents and injuries. Improvement in Design of car jack is really important to make the tool more efficient and user friendly with high safety features. The objectives of this paper is to critically analyze and compare between ACME and SQUARE threads from stress and strain perspective in order to improve the performance from safety and durability point of view for developments in the field of thread design. In this paper selection of two different types of screw threads namely Square and Acme threads. The square threads are named after their square geometry. They are the most efficient power screw, but also the most difficult to machine, thus most expensive. The Acme threads are machining with multipoint cutting tool on thread milling machine, it is an economical operation. Acme threads have more thickness at core diameter than of Square threads therefore a screw with Acme threads is stronger than equivalent screw with Square threads.

Abstract:
Automotive scissors jacks have rapidly grown in popularity in past years because of their light weight, low cost and ease of use and storage. However, they may be a potential safety hazard if the scissors jack is not adequately designed, properly assembled or correctly used. This paper summarizes results from a test and evaluation program performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involving 120 automotive scissors jacks selected from 24 models and made by 14 different manufacturers. In conjunction with the test results, a mathematical model was introduced to describe the load supporting characteristics of a variety of scissors jacks. The analytical results agree fairly well with the test results. A failure mode and effects analysis was performed to analyze four observed major failure modes of the scissors jacks; i.e., collapsing, toppling over, unable to raise or lower the vehicle and penetration of the vehicle frame.

Large structures weighing systemis upgrading the structure simultaneously using several jacks. After structure leaves the ground, the hydraulic control check valve is used for hydraulic lock, and pressure sensor that under each jack measures the jack cavity pressure. Data is collected by PLC system to obtain the force situation of each jack. With the moment of inertia calculation, center of gravity coordinates of the plane is obtained, the weighing system involves in the hydraulic system, control system, data acquisition and transmission. As the jack wall friction and the leakage factors, in the measuring process, pressure sensor reflects little, and measurement errors appear. In this research, experimental research data has been used to obtain empirical formula under varying pressures, error has also been corrected in weighing measurement system in order to get high precision weighing data. The results are in good agreement after comparing this theory with results measured by weight sensor.

Abstract:
In South Primor'e (Russia), mature male masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) parr are found at age 0 + to 3 + (9–22 cm). After first maturation, some male parr die, while others survive and mature the following year. Immature males become smolts after one or two winters in rivers and migrate to the sea in spring–early summer. After one winter in the sea, they return as sea-run normal-sized (40–70 cm) males at age R.1 +. Besides mature male parr and normal-sized sea-run males, jacks (28–33 cm) at age R.0 + were found. Such males return to rivers after some months of marine life and do not overwinter in the sea. Some jacks previously spawned as parr, while others did not. All jacks and normal-sized sea-run males die after spawning. Thus, male masu salmon mature as one of four life history forms: (1) male parr, (2) jacks that matured previously as parr, (3) jacks that did not mature previously as parr, and (4) ordinary sea-run males. While mature male parr and sea-run males are ordinary life history forms, both forms of jack are rare.

Abstract:
One of the most well-known non-destructive methods for inspection and diagnosis in historical masonry walls is the flat-jack testing. Although it gives qualitative and valuable results about the local stress level and the deformability of the masonry material, when testing on irregular masonry walls, or walls with larger stone units, experimental and practical problems might occur, leading to inaccurate or useless results. In addition, the testing apparatus is labor, with difficulties in sawing task. Another limitation is the difficulty to test multi-leaves walls. To overturn these problems and to achieve more reliable information, an enhanced type of jacks is proposed in the paper. The new testing system consists of tube-jacks instead of the usual flat-jacks. As part of the preliminary research, analyses with FE models to simulate the differences between the conventional and the enhanced method are presented in the paper. The advantages and disadvantages of both methods are discussed and further research steps are presented.

Abstract:
With the increasing level of technology, researchers all over the world are working continuously to improve and implement better and robust design of materials at workplace for productivity, efficiency and effectiveness. Detailed design procedure of a quick lifting screw jack is presented in this paper. The design is fundamentally a modification of the conventional scissor jack. The problems associated with the conventional jacks are the ergonomic snags experienced by operators due to prolonged bending or squatting positions during operation. These problems of waist pain and backaches are as a result of continuous turning of the wrench or crank shaft in an uncomfortable position for a long period. These led to the design and modification of quick lifting screw jack with gear arrangements that are safe, reliable and capable of raising or lowering heavy load with little effort. The results showed that the introduction of the crank and gear mechanism would help reduce difficulty in operation, reduce time, increase efficiency and effectively control the difficulties concomitant with Ergonomics - which is an ultimate sensitivity in design process.

Abstract:
The estimation of time intervals is crucial in the performance of any motoric task, such as hitting a baseball. The timing of the swing is arguably the most important part of the swing, but what if physiological arousal, due to the stress, of the moment alters the batter’s ability to estimate that short interval between the pitch and the swing? There have been a number of models developed to explain how the batter will perform the task, going as far back as the Yerkes-Dodson Law (Yerkes & Dodson, 1908). The purpose of this study is to investigate how physiological arousal will affect an individual’s ability to estimate time intervals and the points where they will over and underestimate time. Participants were placed into a high physiological arousal group, by performing jumping jacks, a resting group (no jumping jacks). Participants were asked to perform a duration reproduction task, performing, or not performing, jumping jacks between each block. The results showed that the elevated physiological arousal in the jumping jack condition resulted in greater overestimation of the durations. These findings have implications for understanding failures in human performance during time sensitive scenarios and provide a basis for developing biofeedback training to help reduce these errors in duration estimation because of elevated physiological arousal.

Abstract:
Many laboratories utilize different types of opto-mechanical positioning devices in their experiments. Such devices include lateral stages, which provide 1-dimenstional translational movement, 3-dimensional translation stages, and laboratory jacks, which provide a convenient way of changing the vertical position of a sample. Recent advances in and affordability of 3-D printing have opened up a variety of possibilities, not only providing versatile and custom-designed laboratory equipment but also reducing the cost of constructing typical laboratory opto-mechanical positioning stages. Here, we present the possibility of printing typical linear stages, thereby constructing a full XYZ stage. In addition, a vertical laboratory jack, which utilizes a scissor format, has also been printed using polylactic acid (PLA) filament. The design of these systems required modeling the strength of material to estimate the deflection, which was conducted by finite element analysis. The effectiveness of the proposed 3-D-printed positioning devices was tested by measuring the stroke and the repeatability. As an example of application, a multispectral reflection imaging device was constructed with the help of 3-D-printed linear stages and a laboratory scissor jack.

Abstract:
Domestic equids, consisting of 5 million donkeys, 1 million horses and 0.6 million mules, play important roles in Ethiopia’s economy by providing services in transportation and traction sectors. In spite of the large equine population and the common use of mules (jack×mare), the opposite hybrid, hinny (stallion×jenny) is uncommon. Compared to using mules or either parent, hinnies could provide certain economic and environmental advantages. Considering the large female donkey population, it may be easier and more affordable to produce hinnies than mules. Moreover, hinnies are better than donkeys in draft performance. Thus, using hinnies could help in reducing the large donkey population and hence their negative environmental effect. However, there is no recorded attempt of hinny production in Ethiopia. Although data from controlled experiments are limited, interspecies breeding to produce hinnies is less successful than attempts to produce mules mainly because hinnies are thought to be less fertile. In the present study, adult and cycling Abyssinian jennies were divided into two groups (n=10 each) for natural breeding with three jacks (Jack group) or four stallions (Stallion group). During a period of two years, data on intraspecies and interspecies courtship behavior, mating activities, conception and foaling were recorded. Data were collected mainly by visual observation. Pregnancy was also diagnosed by palpation per rectum at 60 to 90 days after service. Mating was conducted during natural or PGF2α-induced estrus. Data on the number of services per conception, number of pregnancies and foaling were compared using chi-square or Fisher’s test. Jennies in estrus showed overt sexual interest in jacks, stallions and even female herdmates. Two stallions showed sexual interest in jennies; however, only one mated successfully and hence jennies in heat were exposed to this male. In the Jack group, 9 of the 10 jennies conceived (with 27 cycles bred , or 3 cycles/pregnancy). One pregnant jenny died of unrelated causes. Of the remaining 8 pregnant jennies, 3 aborted and 5 delivered live foals. In the stallion group, 3 of the 10 jennies conceived (with 47 cycles bred, or 15.7 cycles/pregnancy). Two of the three females aborted and one delivered a live female foal. The pregnancy rates between the two treatments (90% v. 30%) were significantly different (P=0.02); however, treatment did not affect (P>0.05) foaling rates (63 % v. 33%) or abortion rates (38% v. 67%). Abortion occurred at 192 to 254 days (Jack group) and 147 and 159 days (Stallion group) of gestation. Gestation lengths of 370.2±4.5 v. 330 day and foal body weight of 13.3±1.0 v. 16kg were recorded in the Jack and Stallion groups, respectively. Foaling did not require assistance in either group. We have demonstrated the possibility of hinny production using local jennies and stallions. The main limitations to hinny production were poor sexual desire of stallions towards jennies and also low conception rates after interspecies mating. The latter also cast doubts on the potential of alternative approaches (e.g. artificial insemination) to circumvent the behavioral barrier to interspecies breeding. We would like to thank RPSUD for funding this project and Dr. Azage Tegegne for overall assistance.

Abstract:
Based on the uncertainty of engineering properties of unsupported launching site, fast assessment of preselective site must be done before missile launching, to provide decision for selecting launching position reasonably, and ensure launching missile safely and reliably. Mostly, the launching site is an elastic-plastic structure, the deformation and destruction of launching site is nearly related to the stress and developing process of strain, the support load of the site must be computed before using. In this paper, the bearing load of launching site is analyzed in missile erecting process with the hypothesis that the launching vehicle is bilateral symmetry object. Jack reaction force in erecting process is calculated while the influence of wind load is considered, which provides load criterion for building evaluation model of launching site. The running curve of jack reaction force related to erecting angle is yielded through using pressure data acquisition system. The amplitude and variation trend of jacks reaction force are in well match with theoretical calculation results by analyzing the running curves, and the rationality of result is verified by this way. The research conclusions can offer references for selecting and judging intensity of missile launching site when unsupported random launching way is applied.

Abstract:
Using over 20 years of annual spawner survey data collected from 46 natural populations of coastal Oregon coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), we examined large-scale spatial and temporal dynamics of alternative male pheno types (age-3 hooknoses and age-2 jacks). Fluctuations in jack and hooknose abundance were synchronous among populations (i.e., region-wide synchrony), similar to patterns seen previously in Oregon hatchery populations and indicative of oceanic processes operating at large spatial and temporal scales. By contrast, regional-scale synchrony in the ratio of jack to hooknose males was likely attributable to the influences of the freshwater environment. Moreover, within-population variation in phenotype ratio was lower by brood year than by return year (i.e., weak cohort relationship), contrary to previous patterns in hatchery populations. The spatial and temporal patterns of phenotype ratio observed in natural populations but not in hatchery populations, where freshwater effects were statistically controlled, indicate that the frequency dynamics of coho male alternative phenotypes are influenced more strongly by freshwater than by marine processes. The environmentally induced variability in phenotype ratio suggests that there may be constant perturbations of fitness functions for alternative phenotypes, such that the system should be less stable than predicted from the status-dependent selection model with fixed fitness functions.

Abstract:
We compared: 1) rearing mortality, 2) size at release (mean length), 3) jack, male and female sizes, and 4) jack, female, and adult returns of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) from three consecutive brood years reared at the Nitinat River hatchery using a conventional or a semi-natural rearing method. The semi-natural method included feeding restrictions, shading of the rearing ponds, lower rearing temperature and rearing densities, exposure to a predator and a volitional release. We found no significant effects of brood year or rearing method on rearing mortality; it was significantly lower during the marking to release phase than during the other two phases (eyed-egg to ponding, ponding to marking). Conventionally reared smolts were significantly longer. Conventionally reared males were longer. As a proportion of number of smolts released, semi-natural rearing produced 86% fewer jacks, the same proportion of females and 15% more adults. Adult production trends, described as marine survival rate (returning adults • smolt-1) for Nitinat River Hatchery coho, and as ln recruits • female spawner-1 for a nearby wild coho population, were similar. Jacking rates were lower in Nitinat River hatchery coho than for the nearby wild coho population. We concluded that the semi-natural rearing methodology produces adult fish more efficiently than the conventional rearing method does, and at 73% of the cost.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Betanodaviruses, the causal agents of viral nervous necrosis in marine fish, have bipartite positive-sense RNAs as genomes. The larger genomic segment, RNA1 (3.1 kb), encodes an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, and the smaller genomic segment, RNA2 (1.4 kb), codes for the coat protein. Betanodaviruses have marked host specificity, although the primary structures of the viral RNAs and encoded proteins are similar among betanodaviruses. However, no mechanism underlying the host specificity has yet been reported. To evaluate viral factors that control host specificity, we first constructed a cDNA-mediated infectious RNA transcription system for sevenband grouper nervous necrosis virus (SGNNV) in addition to that for striped jack nervous necrosis virus (SJNNV), which was previously established by us. We then tested two reassortants between SJNNV and SGNNV for infectivity in the host fish from which they originated. When striped jack and sevenband grouper larvae were bath challenged with the reassortant virus comprising SJNNV RNA1 and SGNNV RNA2, sevenband groupers were killed exclusively, similar to inoculation with SGNNV. Conversely, inoculations with the reassortant virus comprising SGNNV RNA1 and SJNNV RNA2 killed striped jacks but did not affect sevenband groupers. Immunofluorescence microscopic studies using anti-SJNNV polyclonal antibodies revealed that both of the reassortants multiplied in the brains, spinal cords, and retinas of infected fish, similar to infections with parental virus inoculations. These results indicate that viral RNA2 and/or encoded coat protein controls host specificity in SJNNV and SGNNV.

Abstract:
With the increase of mining height, the problem of coal wall spalling in the working face gradually worsens. Hydraulic support and its face guard structure are the key pieces of equipment to restrain the coal wall spalling. However, at present, the hydraulic jack is mostly considered as rigid in the analysis of protection mechanism. This simplification cannot effectively reflect the true bearing state of the face guard. In order to improve the accuracy of analysis, this study considers the face guard jack as a flexible spring and establishes a rigid-flexible coupling analysis model of the face guard mechanism. First, based upon the multibody dynamics software ADAMS®, the multibody numerical model of the face guard of the hydraulic support was established. The influence of the two kinds of structures on the coal wall disturbance was analyzed and compared. Then, the rigid model was meshed. The hydraulic jacks were equivalent to the spring system, and the rigid-flexible coupling model was established. Based upon the application load on different positions of the rigid-flexible model, the load-bearing characteristics and hinge point force transfer characteristics of the two face guards were analyzed. The results show that the support efficiency of the integral type was higher than that of the split type. In the vertical support attitude, the dynamic disturbance of the coal wall, produced by the two kinds of face guards, was small. The four-bar linkage effectively improved the ultimate bearing capacity of the integral face guard. The results provide theoretical support for the design and optimization of the face guard.

Abstract:
Embryo transfer and the vitrification of embryos could be used for the conservation and recovery of endangered donkey breeds. It is important to develop techniques that optimize recovery rates and the cryotolerance of donkey embryos. This study evaluates factors affecting the recovery rate, quality, and diameter of embryos obtained from donor jennies as a starting point for the use of vitrification and embryo transfer in the conservation of the Andalusian donkey. A total of 100 embryos were recovered out of 124 estrous cycles (80.6%). The donor jenny affected the rates of positive flushings (PFR; p = 0.040) and embryo recovery (ERR; p < 0.05) as well as embryo quality (p = 0.004). ERR was also affected by the number of flushings (p < 0.001), donor age (p < 0.05), successive cycle within donor (p < 0.001), and jacks (p < 0.05). Number of flushings (p < 0.001) and jack (p < 0.05) had a significant effect on PFR, whereas the day of flushing influenced the developmental stage (p < 0.001), embryo quality (p < 0.05), and diameter of embryos (p < 0.001). The number of flushings significantly influenced the diameter (p = 0.038) and embryo developmental stage (p = 0.001), whereas the developmental stage was statistically different between herds (p = 0.020). The factors influencing the success of this assisted reproductive technique were donor jenny, donor age, successive cycle within donor, day of flushing, number of flushings, and jack. The identification of these key points is crucial to achieve a higher efficiency of embryo transfer and vitrification processes, before considering their application in the conservation of endangered donkey breeds.

Abstract:
The article examines the criminal storyline in The Raw Youth by F. M. Dostoevsky as part of real-life and historical and literary commentary on the novel. The matter has significant links to the facts and persons associated with the “Kumanin inheritance case.” It turned out to be “unfortunate” and “haunted” because of the initial criminal background associated with the activities of the famous criminal community of the 1870s, namely, “The Jack of Hearts Club”. Among its members was Alexander Timofeevich Neofitov, the first executor of the will of A. F. Kumanina. We can presume that he became the prototype of the leader of the “gang,” which included Lambert, Stebelkov and other “cunning scammers” depicted in the novel. Vsevolod Alekseevich Dolgorukov, a prince and tradesman, was also one of the “red jacks,” which could have led Dostoevsky to endow the hero of his novel with a similar surname. The article provides new facts confirming that the typical features of V. A. Dolgorukov are reflected in the characteristics of the young prince Sokolsky. Secondly, two previously unrecognized literary sources of Dostoevsky’s work, namely, novels by the French writer Ponson du Terrail, The Jack of Hearts Club and Secrets of Paris, which were popular in Russia at that time. Their characters, Mrs. St. Alphonse, or Alfonsina, involved in scheming with incriminating papers, and Captain Lambert, depicted as the embodiment of all human vices, are the prototypes of the namesake heroes in Dostoevsky’s novel. All of the above made it possible to conclude that intentional artistic contamination of the historical and biographical narrative, criminal chronicle and literary tradition occurred in The Raw Youth.

Abstract:
Temporary supports consisting of a jack, a stack of wooden cubic elements and a iron plate are used during the removal of buildings deflections by uneven raising. Where the weight of a building is rested on temporary supports with a considerable length, unintentional displacements of buildings in the horizontal direction are seen. The displacements are connected with supports deformations caused by horizontal forces acting on the building part being raised. Non-vertically installed jacks, being part of the supports, are the most frequent reason for the occurrence of such forces. The jacks are not vertical due to deformations in the stack of wooden elements, upon which they are rested. In such case, the stiffness of temporary supports is essential for the safety of the deflection removal process. Laboratory tests of temporary supports were carried out and they showed that their stiffness, understood as a horizontal force divided by a displacement in the acting direction of the force, is not constant. The stiffness of supports is decreasing as the displacement amplitude grows. A considerable decrease in supports stiffness was experienced when positive longitudinal deformations occurred in the cross section of the support elements. As a result, the unconnected elements of the supports were unable to transmit positive stresses of this number. For the investigated range of loads, the deformations of the material of the supports elements were elastic. Inelastic forces were however generated along the contact points of the elements forming part of the supports, and such forces were responsible for creating a hysteresis loop and energy dissipation by the supports. The system, when a full load-unload cycle was applied, was returning to the initial position. Higher values of the energy dissipation coefficient correspond to higher values of a displacement amplitude.
