Abstract:
This essay investigates the conservative, loyalist fiction published in Britain during the French Revolution and its aftermath. A substantial number and a wide variety of these novels were published: long and short, propagandistic and philosophical, for adults and children and by obscure and well-known authors. The essay identifies and analyses the principal structures and themes of anti-Jacobin fiction, and closely examines a representative sample. It assesses their contribution to the ‘war of ideas’ and considers how they fit into larger histories of the novel.

Abstract:
The African American slave narrative is popularly viewed as the story of a lone male's flight from slavery to freedom, best exemplified by the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845). On the other hand, critics have also given much attention to Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), to indicate how the form could have been different if more women had written in it. But in stressing the narratives of Douglass and Jacobs as models for the genre, scholars have ignored the formal and thematic importance of marriage and family in the slave narra

In this chapter, Frank Jacob carefully examines another significant manifestation of collective violence in Asian history: the mass atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers against Chinese in the Rape of Nanking in 1937 and 1938. First analyzing at length the contentious historiography and historical evidence surrounding this pivotal episode of collective violence performed by agents of the Japanese state, Jacob then closely examines the violence perpetrated at Nanking from a theoretical perspective, arguing that it displayed both dynamics of state-sponsored macro-violence such as warfare and

Chapter 2 surveys early responses to Spinoza’s Tractatus theologico-politicus in the Dutch Republic. These include well-known published refutations, such as those by Regnerus van Mansveld (1674) and Frans Kuyper (1676), but also initiatives that never came to fruition, such as those of Jacobus Alting and Antonius Perizonius. Within these responses two main themes stand out: on the one hand, puzzlement at the metaphysics that implicitly underlies Spinoza’s terse biblical exegesis; on the other, indignation at his carefree employment of well-established philological methods in arguments that le

The German armed forces’ relationship to the media is characterised by mutual distrust. The need to protect military secrets is diametrically opposed to the desire for information about the everyday lives of the troops, and not only during scandals. The armed forces’ critical, wait-and-see approach to public relations also often results in them representing themselves in an overly simplified manner. Using historical events, this anthology describes media coverage of the German armed forces and examines selected new topics related to that coverage as well as certain attempts to regulate it. Wit

This chapter describes the program, dubbed ‘Relativity without Relativity’, of deriving all the fundamental accepted facts at the basis of modern field theory from relational principles. A best-matching action based on Jacobi’s principle is in fact sufficient to derive the universality of the light cone (Special Relativity), the correct form of Maxwell’s action and its gauge invariance, as well as the Yang–Mills theory. Faraday is credited with the introduction of the concept of field in physics. He found it extremely useful, in particular for the description of magnetic phenomena, to use the

Faced with a new housing problem, cities are becoming more important in solving it, and a communalisation of housing policy can be observed. On the basis of case studies from 14 cities, this book comparatively analyses the limits and varieties of local housing policy in Germany and the opportunities it offers. In presenting the cities, the book looks at their local rental and real estate markets, the design of their local housing policy in terms of how it perceives problems, instruments and measures, the role of social organisations and groups as well as the development of the cities’ local ho

Paine showed throughout his career a historically well-informed awareness of the shortcomings of English monarchs after 1688 and 1714, whom he regarded as usurpers: it was a practical critique that fed his antipathy to monarchy in general. Rather than republicanism, this chapter establishes Paine’s personal links with the ‘Patriot’ opposition to Sir Robert Walpole’s ministry, a movement that had a religiously freethinking element and drew on reconfigured Jacobitism. By contrast, Paine employed none of the other political languages available to him. Instead, Paine spoke a language of anti-Jacob

This chapter showcases five lectures on algebraic cycles and Chow groups. The first two lectures are over an arbitrary field, where they examine algebraic cycles, Chow groups, and equivalence relations. The second lecture also offers a short survey on the results for divisors. The next two lectures are over the complex numbers. The first of these features discussions on the cycle map, the intermediate Jacobian, Abel–Jacobi map, and the Deligne cohomology. The following lecture focuses on algebraic versus homological equivalence, as well as the Griffiths group. The final lecture, which returns
