Abstract:
“Contradictory” is the watchword in scholarship on Danish-American photojournalist Jacob Riis. “Wildly contradictory, morally schizophrenic”: so Keith Gandal describes Riis' work (18). “A deeply contradictory figure […] a conservative activist and a skillful entertainer who presented controversial ideas in a compelling but ultimately comforting manner”: such is the assessment of Riis offered by Bonnie Yochelson and Daniel Czitrom (xv). “The typical Victorian moralist,” but also the Progressive-so Tom Buk-Swienty proclaims him (239, XIII).

Abstract:
Through his pioneering use of photography and muckraking prose (most especially in How the Other Half Lives, 1890), Jacob Riis earned fame as a humanitarian in the classic Progressive Era mold. Yet in recent years some revisionist scholars have denounced Riis as an unreconstructed racist who merely posed as a benevolent reformer. Does this rethinking of Riis and the character of his work mean that public historians who have come to revere his photographs should shun them when producing public history related to themes of ethnicity, immigration, multiculturalism, and tolerance? The author argues against this conclusion for two reasons. First, a careful analysis of Riis's entire career and body of written work reveals a man who, despite his lapses into the language of racist stereotypes, was fundamentally tolerant to a degree that far surpassed his contemporaries. Second, the bold use of Riis's words and photos provides the public historian with an extraordinary opportunity to delve into the complex questions of assimilation and Americanization, labor exploitation, cultural diversity, social control, and middle-class fear that lie at the heart of the American immigration narrative.

Abstract:
While Jacob Riis has long been situated in the secular wing of turn-of-the-century reform, this study locates the aesthetic and narrative devices of his work within a neglected tradition of Protestant homiletics. Linking his stereopticon presentations to the allegories and interactive strategies of eighteenthand nineteenth-century sermons, Jackson demonstrates how Riis used modern technology to make traditional modes of religious pedagogy newly relevant to Progressive Era campaigns for social reform. Rather than distancing viewers from the plight of the indigent, as many critics have argued, Riis's photographs sought to convert audiences to the cause of reform by offering new means of spiritual and social identification.

Abstract:
During the twentieth century, Jacob Riis’s once-widely-acknowledged role as father of the urban small-parks movement receded in historical significance in favor of his contributions to journalism, photography, housing reform, and settlement work. This pattern overlooks the central importance that Riis himself placed on parks and playgrounds activism in his broader social agenda, at one point calling it “the logical sequel to ‘How the Other Half Lives.’” This essay examines how Riis, through his efforts to provide New York’s tenement districts with “breathing spaces,” refashioned eminent domain from a rhetorical concept into a potent tool for reformers to assert control over working-class urban spaces. It also considers the impact of these projects on the working-class denizens of Riis’s proposed park sites, who viewed their homes in a markedly different light.

Abstract:
Social photography was born in the United States at the end of the 19th century at a time when children were beginning to occupy a new place in the family. There is a stark contrast between the rich children, who tend to be sanctified and whose innocence is praised through art, and the poor children, who are often exploited and depicted in a picturesque way. While putting poor children at the heart of their concerns, the reformers used photography as a means to promote social progress, in such a way that text and image prove to be indissociable. Such is the case with Jacob A. Riis, a journalist and photographer who worked in New York at the end of the 19th century, and Lewis W. Hine, through his commitment to the struggle against child labor with the National Child Labor Committee (at a time marked by high immigration, rapid industrialization, and chaotic urbanization), as well as the photographers who worked for the Farm Security Administration at the end of the 1930s within the New Deal. Children are at the heart of a rhetorical system that exploits the vivid and truthful dimensions of photography and its power to move us. They contribute to the emergence of a new genre of photography, social documentary photography, which evolved according to the various ways in which it was disseminated (the press, conferences, exhibitions, and museums). While the cause of children is most often defended and while they maintain their status as subjects in these photographs, the ways in which they are depicted through different means of communication and dissemination sometimes turn them into mere objects

Abstract:
The strong hydrological seasonality of these ecosystems structures freshwater fish communities composition, being considered as one of the most threatened in the world. Fish early life stages are very sensitive to changes in the environment and their quality, evidencing its role as a potential indicator of biological integrity. This study was conducted in the Guadiana River basin, aiming to understand the relationships between fish recruitment and environmental conditions. The larvae community found comprised a total of 13 taxa, 7 native and 6 exotic, but varied annually and spatially. The occurrence of fish larvae of exotic species seems to be associated with environmental degradation. Physic-chemical environmental variables influence structure and composition of the larval community. This work reinforces the high potential of using the larvae community as bio-indicator of biological integrity of these increasingly pressured freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:
The ambitious late Gothic vaults created in the 15th and 16th centuries with their complex shape and complicated meshes of ribs soaring along spatial curves, were extremely demanding in their geometric design. This regards both the design of the whole structure, as also the design specifications for the single stone elements which were prefabricated and fit together on the building site with astonishing precision. In consequence, the particular character of these structures and their geometric features are intrinsically linked to the design routines and the geometric concepts used by the Master Builders. At present, these procedures and methods are not well understood, because they are not documented in original drawings, and because they differ in principle from the modern practice. In consequence, necessary works of repairing and restoring cannot recur to any information related to the original design. Moreover, understanding the characteristics of information transfer from the design to the execution, would cast a light on the information society in which these constructions were created. In several case studies, the geometric concepts of the intricate spatial curve systems of late Gothic vaults have been clarified on the basis of detailed surveys and geometrical analyses carried out on the built objects. On this background, also the existing sources such as historical design treatises could be re-interpreted. In a collaboration between the research group working on the design principles of late Gothic vaults at the Technische Universität Dresden, and expert stone masons specialized on historical working techniques and practical stereotomy at the Cathedral Workshop Œuvre Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, the phases of the design process, such as full-scale drawings on the tracing floor and the production of full-scale models and samples of ribs and keystones, are currently investigated in practical experiments. As result, we propose a complete picture of the design process from the general concept to the setting-out of the single stone elements. Further, we are able to drive general considerations on the Late Medieval and Early Modern design practice for stone structures and trace a new interpretation of the early treatises of stereotomy.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate Hymenaea courbaril L (jatoba) seedling in relation to: a) the competitive capability with intercropped plants and weed regarding to dry matter allocation, leaf area and macronutrients concentration. b) The selectivity of herbicides sulfentrazone and glyphosate and, c) the effects of different doses of sulfentrazone on microbial activity of substrates cultivated with the seedling. The experiments were conducted in greenhouse, nursery and laboratory of UFVJM. In 2009, two experiments were carried out, being the treatments a combination of jatoba seedling that had developed alone and/or in competition with one of the following species: Brachiaria humidicola, Brachiaria brizantha, Brachiaria decumbens, Panicum maximum, Cajanus cajan, Canavalia ensiformis and Mucuna aterrima (experiment 1) and Cenchrus echinatus L., Bidens pilosa L., Euphorbia heterophylla L., Solanum americanum Mill and Lolium multiflorum Lam. (experiment 2), plus the isolated cultivation of every weed and plant that was intercropped for 60 days. Besides the effects of the weed plants on height and dry matter of jatoba plants, it was assessed the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in all of plants. In 2010, it is also made two experiments and the treatment was made with two herbicides (glyphosate and sulfentrazone) and five doses of these herbicides (0,00; 0,09; 0,18; 0,35 e 0,70 L ha-1) (experiment 1); five doses of sulfentrazone (0,00; 0,04; 0,15; 0,30 e 0,60 L ha-1) and two types of substrates (rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric cultivated with jatoba seeding) (experiment 2). It was assessed the poisoning potential of these products on vegetal species and the rhizospheric microbial community. It was observed that the competition between the plants did not trigger changes on production of dry matter or leaf area of jatoba. It was verified a positive effect of nutrients accumulation by weed that lived together with jatoba. These herbicides have showed high potential for use on weed control in areas of jatoba planting in initial phase of development. Regarding to microbiological indicators, it was verified that the C-CO2 and microbial biomass carbon evolution was sensitive to the presence of herbicides that be constitute auxiliary tools on monitoring of the impact of these products.

Abstract:
The current state of research on the design and construction of late Gothic vaults is principally based on the interpretation of sources, but rarely on surveys of existing vaults. In particular the idea for the criteria upon which the radii of the single ribs and arches were determined (so-called "principal arch"), is found to derive from sources dating from later periods when Gothic vaulting was no longer generally practised. In fact, this interpretation cannot be supported by geometric surveys on existing vaults: the plain contradiction to the actual geometric properties of some of the vaults studied so far have called for a critical revision of this interpretation. For investigating the design criteria and procedures starting from the built object, and also debating the methodological aspects of using the "building as source", a rewarding subject is the vault with curvilinear ribs in the "Hall of Arms" in the Albrechtsburg at Meissen (Germany), which was built by Jacob Heilmann in 1521. This is due to its ambitious design, high quality of execution and good state of preservation. A detailed survey of this structure is presented, discussing different aspects of the design, construction, and detailing, e.g.: Investigations on the geometrical concept of the vault by means of "reverse geometric engineering", on the background of the problem mentioned above. Further, the stone-cutting of the single members of the vault, which offers interesting aspects of standardization and its limits in nerves with double curvature: standardization in medieval constructions has been object of discussion, but not yet studied in the ambit of late Gothic vault construction. The question whether and how the vault surface was determined in the design, being the principle structural feature working as a shell structure; this is of particular interest as the relation between the rib system and the shell is complex and has consequences on the stone-cutting of the arches. The question how the design specifications for the single rib members could be derived from the general concept of the curves (clarified in the survey); the context to the graphic sources and technical prose related to late Gothic vault design and structural design. The aim is to understand the entire design process, the criteria of the decisions taken, their relation to the contemporary theory, and the communication process which took place for the creation of this extremely demanding structure.

Abstract:
In How the Other Half Lives, Jacob Riis sentimentalized the urban poor, a familiar rhetorical and representational strategy used to elicit righteous outrage that would propel social reform. Others took a different approach. Based in bodily forms of humor in all its crass vulgarity, the comic sensibility cultivated camaraderie and solidarity among members of the Other Half, rather than uniting the elite on their behalf. The multivalent, public laughter effected by the comic sensibility enabled its audience to laugh on their own terms, and thus become co-creators of meaning. As we see in examples including Rudolph Dirks’s Katzenjammer Kids comic strip and the story “Ingratitude of Rosenfeld” by Bruno Lessing, illustrated by William Glackens, the comic sensibility provided an alternative to realist approaches like that used by Riis, which depicted the Other Half as sentimentalized objects of pity, as faceless hordes, or both.
