In spring of 1846, the George and Jacob Donner families and some 80 traveling companions began their overland trek to California. When the party ascended the Sierra Nevada in late October, a snowstorm forced the group to bivouac. At this point, the train became separated into two contingents; the larger party camped near Donner Lake and the smaller group—including the Donner families—settled at Alder Creek. We used starch gel electrophoresis to investigate levels of genetic variation between trees of interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. glauca) that were phenotypically resistant versus susceptible to defoliation by the western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman). We also investigated the association between allozyme variation and tree growth traits. This chapter addresses the most controversial homily in Jacob of Serugh’s corpus, the Homily on the Council of Chalcedon. Recently discovered manuscripts provide a solid basis for viewing this homily as an integral part of his corpus, despite the long debate over its authenticity. The close correspondence of his Christological thought here with that examined in his letters provides an even firmer basis for asserting its authenticity. Although the physical context in which Jacob delivered this homily remains elusive, this chapter demonstrates how scholars can productively interpret it as a text that circulated among reading communities in late antiquity. Two periods of Jacob’s life, known from his letters, would have made ideal contexts in which he circulated this homily as part of a dossier of texts for elite reading communities.

Abstract:
This chapter examines two of Jacob of Serugh’s exegetical homilies that use the pairing of miracles and sufferings to defend a miaphysite view of Christology. A homily on the promise of a future prophet in Deuteronomy 18:15–18 features typological exegesis that explores similarities between Moses and Christ. Homilists in late antiquity regularly used typological exegesis to express their views on Christology through familiar biblical stories. In another homily, Jacob offers a Christological interpretation of Peter’s confession of Christ in Matthew 16:13–20 and encourages his audience to imitate Peter in confessing Christ in a way that agrees with the miaphysite view of Christology. Jacob’s contemporaries Philoxenos of Mabbug and Severos of Antioch had similarly used this passage to support miaphysite Christology. The examination of these two homilies solidifies Jacob’s participation in debates over Christology through preaching and his use of homilies to communicate these ideas to broad audiences.

After looking at how well-known Reformers such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Zachary Ursinus understood the Lombardian formula, concentration shifts to a few critical events that provide important background to the Synod of Dordt and intra-Reformed debates on the extent of the atonement. More specifically, the chapter covers a late sixteenth-century debate between the Lutheran Jacob Andreae and the Reformed theologian Theodore Beza on the extent of Christ’s work. Next, it looks at the back-and-forth between Jacob Arminius and William Perkins. Finally, it gives a thorough examination of the Hague Conference of 1611, which featured a discussion of the various doctrines of grace among the Remonstrants and Contra-Remonstrants.

Abstract:
This chapter comments on the epistle of Sherira Gaon, which is considered an extraordinary instance of the genre of Geonic responsa written in 986 or 987. Sherira's Epistle is exceptional both in terms of its length and subject matter and it addresses a number of questions formulated by Rabbi Nissim b. Jacob ibn Shahin on behalf of the scholars of Qayrawan. This chapter questions Sherira's use of talmudic sources and oral traditions in the responsa and suggests that Sherira's statements are almost inversely proportional to the extent to which they are supported by the Talmud itself.
