The Jacobite Court was established at Saint-Germain-en-Laye at the beginning of 1689, following the successful invasion of England by William of Orange. At the time few people expected the Court to remain there for long, but after James II’s defeat in Ireland (1690), and the failure of his planned invasion of England (1692), it became clear that there was little hope of an immediate restoration. In the event the Stuarts were to remain at Saint-Germain-en-Laye for a quarter of a century. James II himself died there in 1701. The article is devoted to the history, dogma and current situation of the Syrian Jacobite Church, which is one of the Ancient Eastern Pre-Chalcedonian Churches. The name of the Church, which separated from Antioch in the 6 th century, is associated with the name of its founder Jacob Baradaeus (505-578). In the Syrian Jacobite Church, he is revered as a saint. The figure of Baradaeus is associated with the creation of a parallel hierarchy of Monophysites in Syria. On 8 June 1438, the Council of Ferrara-Florence began proceedings aimed at the reunion of the Eastern and Western Churches. One of the first issues discussed was the Latin doctrine of purgatory. This article examines a particular moment in the divergence of eschatological doctrine between the Latin, Greek and Syriac Churches – indeed, representatives of the West Syrian ‘Jacobites’ and East Syrian ‘Nestorians’ were at Ferrara too. It argues that a debate concerning the post mortem activity of the saints proved crucial for the formation of various Christian eschatological orthodoxies. The cataly

Although the twelfth-century gold shrine containing the relics of Saint Giles from the abbey of Saint-Gilles in Southern France no longer exists, the lengthy description of it found in Book V, the Pilgrim’s Guide, of the Liber sancti Jacobi allows for its reconstruction. A comparison of both the appearance and use of the Giles shrine to medieval comparanda, including liturgical objects and furniture from Santiago de Compostela described in the Pilgrim’s Guide, reveals not only how unique this reliquary was but also highlights differences between the approaches to relics, worship, and pilgrims

It was to be expected that at the court of a Catholic king and queen there would be from the beginning of the exile at Saint-Germain-en-Laye a royal chapel and an establishment of Catholic chaplains and that this would last as long as the court remained there. It continued in fact after the departure of James Edward to Lorraine in 1712 and Avignon in 1716 and for a while after the death of Queen Mary Beatrice in 1718. The priests of the English Jesuit Province—the subjects of this article—remained in office until 1720 or perhaps a year or two later. It may be presumed that they stayed on, afte

A detailed morphological analysis of the tracery attests the unusual quality of its architectural forms. The tracery of the tympanum, which is among the earliest flamboyant compositions, stands out for its sophistication and the studied reflection by the master of the works concerning the artistic means at his disposal. Long associated with Roman republicanism and its virtuous defenders, Stoicism served as a deep source for an emergent discourse of natural and human rights. The chapter mentions that the radical vein of Stoicism emerged in multiple forms on both sides of the Channel.
