Abstract:
In the Urals and adjacent territories, jade products are few and represented mainly by jewelry (rings and beads). The only exception is the preparation of the mace. All products date back to the Bronze Age. In other territories jade products (drilled axes) are known in the materials of the Borodino hoard in Moldova and hoard L in Troy. This article presents the results of experiments on drilling jade in different ways and using different abrasives. Drilling was done with a hollow bone drill and a copper tube. The experiments helped to clarify some aspects of the technology of manufacturing large diameter holes using a drill and rotation. At the same time, labor costs were determined in the process of using a bone drill and a copper tube. The important role of abrasives used for drilling has become clear.

Abstract:
Excavation of a small Maya ceremonial structure at the site of Piedras Negras, Guatemala, has revealed a Late Classic period (ca. A.D. 600–900) vaulted tomb containing the remains of a young member of the royal family whom we identify as “Night-time Turtle.” The artifact assemblage from the burial included a modest quantity of carved jade jewelry (38 pieces), an incised vessel dating to the early Yaxché (ca. A.D. 630–680) ceramic phase, and a ceremonial “bundle” of bloodletting implements. Although the sex of this adolescent was not determined during osteological examination, hieroglyphic evidence from a recovered stingray spine suggests that this was a prince, probably the son of Ruler 2 or 3. Placed at an entrance to the royal precinct atop its monumental staircase, his funerary structure was an integral part of the sacred landscape, accessed by visitors to the precinct or to the palace beyond. Following a description of the site, tomb, osteology, and artifacts, we discuss the nature of this landscape and the role in it played by this “guardian” of the Acropolis.

Abstract:
A burial and a rich offering were found under Room 2 in the Murals Building, Bonampak, a Mayan archaeological site situated in Chiapas, Mexico. This burial may be related with the creation of the famous mural paintings. A rich set of jewelry made of green stones was among the different objects found. Green stones have great importance in Mesoamerican cultures, those composed of jadeite being the most appreciated. To characterize the green stones, different spectroscopic techniques were used in a complementary way: Raman and infrared spectroscopies (FT-IR) were used for global mineralogical analysis, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) were applied simultaneously in situ on the artifacts that were not successfully identified by these molecular techniques. In addition, XRF was used to contrasts the elemental information from pieces composed of pyroxenes that may be related to the raw sources of jade in Guatemala. The main minerals identified within the beads and earrings were jadeite with omphacite and jadeite with albite; to a minor extent, quartz, and serpentine. In this paper, the main features of the molecular and X-ray techniques are compared in order to determine the advantages and limitations of these spectroscopies for mineral identification. With this combination of techniques, it was possible to undertake a suitable characterization of the analyzed objects. This paper focuses on the XRD–XRF combined analysis for in situ noninvasive characterization.

Abstract:
Changes made to Art. 191 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation at the end of 2019 in order to eliminate gaps in legislation, in fact, created even more conflicts in the theory and practice of applying criminal and administrative law. The legislator has not fully calculated the risks of the new edition of Art. 191 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The elimination of these risks requires more changes to the federal legislation, the adoption of new by-laws. Within the framework of Art. 191 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation the legislator created a contradiction regarding the qualification of illegal circulation of unique amber formations. Russian legislation does not contain a legal definition of semi-precious stones, clarification of their difference from precious stones. The concept of precious stones does not prove to be successful, since it contains a list-based reference of a particular stone to the category of precious stones, which does not always really reflect the economic value of a particular mineral. The list of semi-precious stones at the level of the Government of Russia has yet to be approved. Taking into account the administrative prejudice as one of the conditions for criminal prosecution for illegal trafficking in semiprecious stones, it should be the same with the list of semi-precious stones established to bring an individual to administrative responsibility for similar offenses. The legislator did not pay attention to the issues of delimiting jewelry and household products and scrap of such products from the subject of crimes under Art. 191 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. An even greater problem is the inconsistency between the norms of administrative and criminal legislation on liability for illegal trafficking in semi-precious stones.

Abstract:
AbstractWe describe a remarkable artifact discovered during our 2015 excavations at the Maya site of Nim li Punit, Belize. It is a T-shaped jade pectoral worn on the chest by ancient Maya kings during rites in which they scattered copal incense (Figure 1). These rituals are described or depicted on six carved stone monuments (stelae) at the site. What is more, two stelae at the site depict rulers wearing the pectoral. The reverse side of the jade contains a long historical hieroglyphic text. Had the piece been recovered by illegal means and ended up in a private collection, much of the text would make little sense and it could not possibly be ascribed to Nim li Punit. The priceless worth of the Nim li Punit pectoral, therefore, lies not only in its hieroglyphic inscription but also in its known archaeological context and contemporary images of its use. We briefly describe that context and present a translation of the important text on the jade pectoral, which we interpret as a “wind jewel.”

Abstract:
Gold has been a precious resource for people on earth from the past to the present. It is used as both a value gain and jewelry, and is the focus of interest for people in terms of receiving attention and protecting its value. Especially recently, it has been the most favorite for investors due to its excess value increase and decrease which is constantly monitored. The study aimed to compare the predictive performance of the gold price return using the Support Vector Regression-GARCH hybrid models combined with the traditional volatility models. It has been examined whether the Support Vector Regression GARCH models would increase foresight performance. The study used data on the daily frequency between 01/01/2010–01/04/2023. Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Variable Variance, Glosten-Jaganthan-Runkle GARCH, Exponential GARCH and hybrid model Support Vector Regression -GARCH are utilized as prediction methods. For all methods, the gold series is divided into two groups as training and test data. The Root Mean Square Error values are compared as a model performance criterion. The RMSE values and graphics outputs have been concluded that the Support Vector Regression-GARCH model based on predicted linear, radial-based and polynomial kernel predicts more effectively than the GARCH models.

Abstract:
The Hongshan culture, which represents the Neolithic culture of the northeast region of China, has distinct characteristics that the tombs and their burials represent this culture. This characteristic was more clearly revealed when compared with the Neolithic culture of coexisting Northeast Asia including Korea. A stone tomb called Jeokseokchong was also discovered in the Xiaozhushan upper-class culture, which is adjacent to the Hongsan culture. In Primorsky and Korea, earthen graves are found in tomb groups. However, in Korea, in addition to earthen graves, there are various types of coffin graves and mass burial tombs compared to those of Primorsky Krai. In the tomb of the Hongsan culture, not only the representative stamping earthenware of this culture, but also colored earthenware and jade instruments of various shapes were excavated. On the other hand, from the Xiaozhushan Upper Culture, not only earthenware such as feet, high plates, and cup-shaped earthenware, but also earthenware from the Shandong Longshan culture were excavated. It is different from the Hongshan culture. Not only earthenware, but also various ornaments and hunting implements were excavated from the Boisman Cultural Tomb in Primorsky Krai. The custom of deliberately deforming skulls in male and female human bones is also found. In Korea, during the period of coexistence with Hongsan culture, earthen graves were identified as groups in Janghang and Yeondaedo in Gadeokdo. Round-bottomed earthenware is mainly excavated, and it is a raised gate. In addition to earthenware, there are ornaments and hunting tools such as anklets, shell bracelets, crown jewels, and jade earrings. In Primorye and Korea, in addition to earthenware and ornaments, hunting tools are also stored, but it was not found in the Hongsan culture using stone graves and in the upper culture of Xiaozhushan. It was also found that among the burials of Northeast Asian tombs, Hongsan culture, Boisman culture, and Gadeok also differ according to gender in Janghang ruins. Among burial items, jade earrings are commonly identified, and they are classified and compared with the period of coexistence with the Hongsan culture. As a result, the relics of Hongsan culture are different in size and shape from those of Korea and Primorsky Krai. Rather, in Korea, there has been a tradition of making jade earrings since earlier than the Yoseo region.

Jung, Sung Gyun, Kun Hwang, and Young Joong Hwang. "“All Women of Nagoya are Beautiful”: Travel Records of a Korean Diplomat in 1764." Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, April 29, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1097/scs.0000000000010171.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to ascertain how women of that era looked to a Korean diplomat who visited Japan in the 18th century. During 1763–1764, the “Documents on Joseon Tongsinsa (diplomatic mission)” contain 10 records of Korea and 2 records of Japan. Among them, “The Song of a Grand Trip to Japan” (日東壯遊歌), a Joseon gasa, was reviewed. In the diary entries dated February 2 and 3, 1764, when he was in Nagoya, the author (Kim Ingyeom) described the physical appearance of Japanese women in the city. The peoples of here are bright and beautiful/ All the women are peerless beauties. With eyes like stars and cinnabar-red lips / A clear complexion like white jade, eyebrows like butterflies,/ Hands like budding sprouts, forehead like a cicada. They look like carved ice and as if lumped together with snow. How are they so beautiful despite having the flesh and blood of a human being? Though Zhao Feiyan and Yang Guifei (queens of China) are called the eternal beauties,/ They would look less beautiful compared to women here. If they dressed in Korean costumes and were decorated with jewels,/ We would forget ourselves and mistaken them as goddesses. He highlighted features such as prominent foreheads, eyebrows shaped like butterflies, star-like eyes, red lips, slender hands, and pale skin. He portrayed Japanese women as having a superior appearance compared to Chinese or Korean women. This record suggests that a diplomat admired the appearance of Japanese women during the Meiwa Era (1764–1772).
