The authors of this paper argue that worker co-ops need to be valued as an improvement in the quality of working life, yet all too often they and the agencies which support them are caught up in a “numbers game” of trying to maximise the number of jobs created in order to justify funding. It is important not to under-estimate the problem of under-capitalisation in co-ops, the stresses of establishing a new business for those with no management experience, and the cost and time needed for training. Co-ops are more an experiment in a new labour process than an easy cure for a dying economy.

The proposed method computes the speed field of level-sets adaptively, according to which the contours in images evolve at proper speeds. Thus it can produce images with less jagged edges stably and fast. To suppress blurring artifacts, the shock filter is used to get sharper edges in images. And the new method can interpolate images with arbitrary magnification factors (MFs). Experimental results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of both objective and subjective image quality

Introduction: Brutal? The word “brutal” has associations with cruelty, inhumanity, and aggression. Within the field of architecture, however, the term “Brutalism” refers to a post-World War II Modernist style, deriving from the French phrase betón brut, which means raw concrete (Clement 18). Core traits of Brutalism include functionalist design, daring geometry, overbearing scale, and the blatant exposure of structural materials, chiefly concrete and steel (Meades 1).The emergence of Brutalism coincided with chronic housing shortages in European countries ravaged by World War II (Power 5) and g

My father killed the boar when he was 16. He’d dreamed of killing the boar for some time. My father’s brother had killed a boar when he was only fifteen. I struck empty air. Her tendril-fingers seized the beige seashell curve of my hearing aid and she lifted the cargo of sound towards her eyes. She peered at the empty battery-cage before flicking it open and shut as if it was a cigarette lighter, as if she could spark hearing-life into this trick of plastic and metal that held no meaning outside of my ear. I stared at her. A band of horror tightened arou

Abstract:
If Continental social theory emerges from a climate of intensely cold winters and short mild summers, how does Australia (or any nation defined by its large masses of aridity) function as an environment in which to produce critical theory and new knowledge? Climate and weather are intrinsic to ambience, but what impact might they have on the conditions of producing academic work? How is ambience relevant to thinking and writing and research? Is there an ambient epistemology? This paper argues that the ambient is an unacknowledged factor in the production of critical thinking, and draws on exam
