Abstract:
The issue of heterodoxy arises when an orthodoxy is established. Even by the Buddha’s time a large number of variant views existed. Even the Ṛksaṃhita contained hymns with contrary beliefs and opposing gods. In time the Cārvākas or materialists contested the whole fabric of beliefs represented by the Vedas. In the Buddhist case a similar deviant was found in Devadatta who is represented as opposing Gautama Buddha’s doctrines. One can also trace elements of dissent from the theologically recognised dharma in texts such as Arthaśāstra and Kāmasutra. In early mediaeval times the Jainas could be identified as the major ideological critics of Brahmanism. In today’s India, where all dissent with the official dogma is being denounced as anti-national, it is time to project history from the point of view of the so-called heretics or dissidents as well.

Součková, Ema. "Graduály z dílny Jana Táborského z Klokotské Hory." Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-354658.

Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the decoration of 16th century choral manuscripts. The first part is devoted to the person of Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora (1499-1572) who was a scribe and an owner of a scribe manufactory, and to the most significant illuminators of the the 16th century who contributed to the decoration of songbooks in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. Attention is given not only to the illuminators to whom Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora assigned the work and whose contribution can be inferred from the documents or stylistic analysis of their illuminations, but also to their contemporaries. Besides the frequently mentioned Fabián Puléř, we can assume that Jan Taborský also collaborated with Matouš Ornys of Lindperk, Matyáš Hutský of Křivoklát, Ambrož Ledecký and, presumably, others. In this context, one part of the thesis is focused on engravings by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Bernard Salomon and on the domestic prints by George Melantrich the Elder, as these engravings, mostly woodcuts, served as patterns and inspiration for almost every Bohemian illuminator. Themes found in this type of manuscript are mostly based on Biblical stories, corresponding to the feasts of the liturgical year. In addition to these themes, the graduals contain many miniatures associated with various...

Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview and analysis of stotra literature in South Asia from three different angles: definition, classification, and history. It first reviews recent descriptions of the stotra genre and offers a working definition for the present study. Then it considers some of the factors that can be used to classify and analyze this voluminous and diverse corpus. In doing so, it highlights many of the most salient and recurring features of stotra literature overall. Finally, it surveys the history of stotra literature in South Asia, highlighting key texts, authors, and periods of development, such as the relationship between stotras and Vedic hymns, political eulogies (praśasti), and vernacular devotional (bhakti) poetry, the early history of Buddhist and Jain stotras, and hymns by or attributed to famous authors like Śaṅkara. Overall, the chapter highlights the diversity, flexibility, and persistent appeal of stotra literature across regions and traditions over the millennia.

Abstract:
An enquiry into the Indian tradition of healing and healthcare has to be traced back to the proto-historic Harappan culture. The main source for understanding the socio-economic and cultural developments in the Vedic society is the corpus of Ègvedic hymns. More details about medicine, treatment, and physicians are available in the Aithareya Brāhmaņa and the Śatapatha Brāhmaņa. The Vedic art of healing can be understood as belonging to two distinctive ages. This art of healing consisted medicine supplemented by magical rites with incantations of hymns. The specialization of the bhiṣaks, physicians, in the Vedic medical lore presupposes some amount of systematic organization of the knowledge of the science of medicine accumulated over a long period. Medicinal knowledge of the bhiṣaks was supported and supplemented by auxiliary knowledge of human anatomy, probably from experience in sacrificial rituals. There was a trend of objective and rational explanation of diseases and their healing in the existing texts that was further supported by the heterodox philosophical thinking of the Jains and the Buddhists. This element of rational thinking was instrumental in bringing about a radical change, a paradigm shift, in the indigenous knowledge of the science of Āyureveda.

Abstract:
Abstract Tradition and the scholarship that draws on it have identified the conversion of a Pallava king from Jainism to Śaivism as an important moment of transition in the history of Tamil Śiva-bhakti. The Periya Purāṇam narrates a story about Appar, who undergoes and miraculously survives numerous trials of torture that lead to the conversion of the king who had ordered the trials. In the larger narrative of the “Appar Purāṇam,” the emphasis is on the conversion of Appar himself, which precedes his trials with the king. According to the story, Appar used to be a Jain and then finally saw the light of Siva through the persistent intervention of his sister; his own conversion is a theme found in his bhakti hymns and developed in the biographical account. Thus, the story of the king’s conversion in the Periya Purāṇam mirrors Appar’s own conversion in the bhakti poetry.
