Abstract:
Like many others Church fathers John Chrysostom considers virginity preferable to marriage. At the same time, being an interpreter of Saint Paul’s doctrine, he repeats that marriage is a splendid God’s mystery (Ephesians 5, 31-33). That is why he explains to the Christian men what kind of women they have to marry in order to become happy husbands, as well as draws Christian wives’ attention to their duties. According to Chrysostom, a man who seeks a wife should follow example of the servant, sent by Abraham back to his homeland to get a bride for his son, Isaac. First of all, he must aim to find a righteous woman. Bride’s wealth, as well as physical beauty are able to make her husband happy only provided that she lives faithfully serving God. Saint John teaches that God expects married Christian women to submit to their husbands, to live a chaste life, to take care of household while the man is about his public business, to be modest in their appearance and manners. Many times he sharply points out women’s vices and faults. On the other hand he holds in high esteem their virtues and sensibility, as well as demands that husbands should love their wives, treat them with respect, be loyal to them. Analyzing female characters pictured by John Chrysostom, we often come across the types well-known through ancient Greek poetry.

Abstract:
The aim of the considerations incorporated into this paper is to present anew the meaning of the term “new feminism,” which John Paul II introduced into philosophical and theological terminology. Since the Pope did not fully clarify the meaning of the term, it is necessary to recall the contexts of John Paul II’s teachings that shed more light on the term, and especially to invoke those papal teachings related to the theology of marriage and family, and the theology of the body. This article also evokes and discusses those areas of papal teaching and speeches in which John Paul II appealed to women to become promoters of this new feminism. The second part of the work is devoted to those women who inspired or could have inspired John Paul II in the work of forming a new feminism. Amongst them, Saint Edith Stein and Blessed Marcelina Darowska stand out, both fully deserving the name of the precursors of Catholic feminism.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction Hypovitaminosis D in pregnancy has been reported to cause various maternal effects, i.e., hypocalcemia, subclinical myopathy, increased risk of preeclampsia (PE), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), cesarean sections, and fetal effects, i.e., neonatal tetany, hyperbilirubinemia congenital rickets, infantile rickets, etc. Only few Indian studies are available in this regard. Objective To estimate serum vitamin D levels in pregnant women, cord blood, and study fetomaternal outcomes. Materials and methods A prospective observational study was conducted on 54 consecutive pregnant women and their newborn babies. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] level was estimated in all women at the time of admission in labor ward. They were followed up to delivery and 48 hours postpartum. Vitamin D was also estimated in cord blood collected during delivery. All results were recorded and analyzed statistically. Results The mean 25(OH)D level in pregnancy was 6.81 ± 7.38 ng/mL. The mean 25(OH)D level in their babies (cord blood) was 6.34 ± 7.05 ng/mL. There was very strong positive correlation between maternal and fetal serum 25(OH)D levels (p-value 0.001, r-value 0.9). Vitamin D deficiency was strongly associated with obesity, PE, and GDM (p-value 0.001). Neonatal jaundice and tetany were also significantly associated with severe vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion Low levels of vitamin D have been observed in pregnant women and their newborn babies. Hypovitaminosis D has been associated with adverse fetomaternal outcomes. As there is a strong correlation of maternal and neonatal levels, supplementing vitamin D in a pregnant women might improve these adverse pregnancy outcomes. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate the association between changes in platelet indices (platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width) and development of preeclampsia. Materials and methods Two hundred pregnant women at 20 to 24 weeks of gestation with singleton pregnancy and normal blood pressure were enrolled after taking well-informed consent. At monthly intervals CBC (complete blood count) was done from 20 to 24 weeks till 40 weeks and 7 days after delivery. Data regarding changes in platelet indices with increasing gestation was collected and analyzed. Results Platelet count decreased significantly in patients with preeclampsia compared to normal pregnant patients (19.4% vs 7.4%). Mean platelet volume increased significantly in preeclampsia patients (44.5% vs 9.22%). Increase in PDW was observed significantly in patients with preeclampsia (47.19% vs 29.4%). Conclusion Patients with preeclampsia are more likely to have significant decrease in platelet count, increase in PDW and MPV. These changes can be observed at an earlier gestational age than significant rise in BP can be observed and are directly proportional to progressive rise in hypertension. Thus, estimation of platelet indices can be considered as an early, simple and cost-effective procedure in the assessment of severity of preeclampsia.
