Abstract: Present study is aimed at assessment of landfill leachate migration impact on groundwater quality of Surjani Town. Groundwater samples (n=28) were collected at various depths (35-220m) and analyzed for various physicochemical characteristics. Data revealed that groundwater pH is highly fluctuating (ranges= 6.5 - 7.6; mean: 7.0) where about one third of total samples are acidic (range= 6.5 – 6.91). Remarkably high TDS content (range: 609 - 28100 mg/l; mean: 11946 mg/l) is reported. Major cations and anions vary in the order of Na (7293mg/l) > Ca (1049 mg/l) &

Present study is aimed to calculate the water quality index (WQI) of Surjani Town by using weighted arithmetic index method to assess its suitability for drinking purpose. For calculating WQI, 12 parameters (pH, TDS, EC, Hardness, Na, Ca, K, Mg, HCO3, SO4, NO3 and Cl) have been taken into account. Except pH, all physicochemical parameters are exhibiting the maximum prominence in WQI quality rating scale (Qn) which suggests that groundwater is highly polluted. The computed value of water quality index (WQI= 331.62) is also found to be high which is comparable with enormously high concentrations

examines the moment when southern states adopted the electric chair by studying Florida’s fraught and uneven transition in the 1920s. Compared to the amateurish and messy practice of hanging, the electric chair offered efficiency, professionalism, and privacy, leading state officials to celebrate it as a form of “penal modernism.” This modernism, however, shifted authority of criminal justice from local sheriffs to a centralized state bureaucracy. This chapter highlights the effects of this shift on long-standing execution rituals, which came to be imbued with new class, gender, and racial constrictions that were emblematic of the modernizing, industrial state.

Abstract:
The early collecting of classical antiquities in the Netherlands was inspired by Italian examples. Peter Paul Rubens acquired a taste for antiquities during his stay in Italy between 1600-1608 and acquired an important collection of sculptures from Sir Dudley Carleton, the British ambassador in The Hague. In Amsterdam, the brothers Gerard and Jan Reijnst recreated the atmosphere of a Venetian palazzo after their purchase of the classical antiquities and paintings of Andrea Vendramin in 1629. Parts of these collections came into the possession of Gerard van Papenbroek in the 18th century. Papenbroek’s bequest to Leiden University marked the start of academic interest in antiquities, which culminated in 1818 in the creation of a Chair of Archaeology in Leiden with Caspar Reuvens as its first professor.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 explores the fieldwork of Charles S. Johnson within the Julius Rosenwald Fund and United States Public Health Service’s syphilis treatment program for tenant farmers and sharecroppers in Macon County, Alabama, during the early years of the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration. A Black sociologist and chair of the Social Science Department at Fisk University, Johnson used the folk category to challenge the idea that America did not have a peasant class and a feudal order in the Jim Crow South. He and members affiliated with Fisk University documented the conjure practices and “social taboos” among tenant farmers and sharecroppers. Johnson concluded that these spiritual practices and social customs were indicators that these poor workers occupied a lower stage of mental and moral development. Rejecting racial traits, Johnson and his research team focused on the racial prejudice and cotton system that stunted not only their religion, but equally, their health maturation. Moreover, he concluded that their folk religion was outside modern health and familial structure. Johnson joined the Rosenwald Fund in an effort to reform their folk religion by organizing the treatment program to extend modern healthcare to them. But Johnson recycled the racial logics that he sought to get away from by accenting their immoral sexual habits, “bad” family structure, and outmoded beliefs. This chapter argues that he considered the religion of Black rural “folk” to have developed in isolated from modern medicine as well as proper forms of family and sex. He concluded that it hindered their mental, moral, and medicinal progress.

Abstract:
My old college housemate Claude had dropped by for one of his stimulating visits, an infrequent happening even though his apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side was only an hour away by car. In college, we had been utter opposites in interests and temperaments—Claude’s direction was art criticism, which he celebrated with an élan that gained him a wide circle of friends. Mine was biology, and shyness was my distinguishing social feature. A shared liking for history and the attraction of very different personalities formed a narrow bridge between us, enough to have kept us in occasional contact over the years. We had been discussing European politics and the question of de-centralism over a light lunch on the patio, and then, in one of those curious shifts that conversations take, we had abruptly changed the subject. He was holding forth in his usual compelling fashion. “The trouble with nature writing,” Claude said, “is that it’s so artistically accepting, so uncritical. Lopez, Abbey, and their ilk—why civilization seems to have passed them by without leaving a mark. Culture implies the ability to discriminate, to judge—not sometimes, all of the time. Why should nature be exempt from criticism?” He readjusted his long, elegantly trousered legs carefully on the lounge chair, glared briefly across the patio at a song sparrow sitting on a dead branch of my Cortland apple tree, and continued. “I fail to comprehend why you nature-lovers don’t hold nature to the same kind of ex-acting standard that a cultured person applies to a bottle of Margaux or a performance of Rosenkavalier. Undiscriminating adulation is barbaric.”Just then a starling arrived at the bird feeder, displacing a blue jay. “Do you see that?” cried Claude. “That is exactly what I mean.” “Too aggressive?” “No, no, that’s not it at all. Look at the preposterous thing. Surely you can see what I’m referring to?” “All I see is a starling. It seems healthy.” “It seems healthy!” Claude stared at me in disbelief. “You’re not understanding me. Try to look at it as if it were a painting, a painting you did in beginner’s art class.
