Abstract Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common cancer among Jamaican women, with 60-70% presenting at advanced stages (III or IV). Incidence rates are slightly lower (43.1 per 100, 000) than global rates (47.8 per 100, 000) and mortality rates are notably higher (18.1 per 100, 000 versus 13.6 per 100, 000). This study investigated germline testing in Jamaican women with BCa to examine clinicopathologic associations and to compare the utility of two genetic testing panels within this population. In Africa, the natural history of SCD is often assumed to be same to the African Diaspora in the US, Jamaica, Europe or Latin America. Yet the environment can be different, including different pathogen exposure, such as malaria. To help better understand this, over 2000 references were identified using the names of all current or past names of African continent countries and the truncated word sickl$, followed by secondary nested and cross reference searches. Six cases series describing causes of death were identified, representing 182 children (Ndugwa, 1973, Athale, 1994, Koko, 1998, Diagne,

Abstract BACKGROUND Hypertension (HTN) is responsible for a significant disease burden in Jamaica. We are reporting the results of the 2017 blood pressure (BP) screening campaign May Measurement Month in Jamaica that aimed to increase the awareness of HTN. METHODS Adults, 18 years old and older, from different parishes of Jamaica were invited to participate during May to June 2017. Demographic data were collected. BP, weight, and height were measured and recorded. RESULTS Five hundred sixty-six participants (n = 566) were enrolled, 91.6% (519) from urban areas, and 72.6% (410) were females. Th

To our knowledge, this is the first report that Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli, previously named Clavibacter xyli subsp. xyli (2), has been detected and identified in sugarcane in Jamaica. Although ratoon stunting (also known as ratoon stunting disease or RSD) has been reported in Jamaica since 1961, presence of the pathogen had never been confirmed in symptomatic tissues. A major industry-wide survey conducted in 1987 using the fluorescent antibody staining technique failed to detect positives in any of the 61 fields sampled in Jamaica. The geminiviruses detected in Sida spp. and M. lathyroides were nearly identical and were both designated Sida golden mosaic geminivirus (SidGMV-JA), whereas the geminivirus in W. amplissima was sufficiently di

These two new species constitute the first records of the genus for the Caribbean Islands.

Elpidium ostracods are known by their very particular niche (water accumulated in tank-bromeliads), their relatively low dispersal ability and their dependency on amphibians for dispersal and colonization of new bromeliads. All these characteristics make the genus an interesting group for evolutionary, ecological and even taxonomic studies. However, the diversity of the group remains poorly studied. Here, we describe three new species of Elpidium, Elpidium littlei n. sp., Elpidium heberti n. sp. and Elpidium wolfi n. sp., and re-describe Elpidium laesslei, all from Jamaica. These species are c
