Abstract This chapter details several influences on the philosophy of Maria Montessori. It starts with historical philosophers of education who Montessori, in one way or another, sees as her predecessors. These include Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Itard, and Séguin. Frierson then turns to Montessori’s professors at the University of Rome, particularly those she studied with while in the philosophy department: Antonio Labriola, Luigi Credaro, and Guiseppe Sergi.
