Abstract:
Abstract Every year, more historians and scholars in related humanities disciplines are using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and mapping technology in their research. The field of spatial history/spatial humanities is growing. Yet, many scholars are still unaware of the potential of using mapping technology to interpret the past and further their academic research. Mapping helps us to see the movement of people and ideas over time and thereby raises new research questions. This article seeks to introduce readers to the field of spatial history and to illustrate the potential of GIS by examining the medieval pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. In particular, the article uses spatial analysis to add further evidence that Aimeric Picaud, the author of the twelfth-century Pilgrim’s Guide to Santiago de Compostela, likely did not make the trip as described in his text.

Abstract:
Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is a pilgrimage route which has existed for more than 1,000 years and leads to the Shrine of St. James in Santiago de Compostela. Currently, it is the best-known pilgrimage and cultural route in Europe. It is often referred to as the “most beautiful road in the world” or the “main street in Europe”. The Way of St. James has been used in prisoner resocialization schemes for many years in Western Europe and since 2013 also in Poland. “New Way” is an innovative project consisting of a two-week pilgrimage of a prisoner who straight from the penitentiary sets out along with the guardian on the Way of St. Jakub from Lublin to Krakow. The aim of the program is to change a young person who, while walking for more than 400 km along Camino de Santiago, has a lot of time to think about his previous life. The task of the guardian is to offer assistance and individual work with the prisoner. Great importance in the project is attributed to the meetings of the prisoner with residents and pastors, who often help on the pilgrimage. An important element of the „New Way” is also to provide young person, after completing the Camino, study of professional competence, referral to an internship and then help in finding a job.

Abstract:
When reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, LeBron James announced that he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat via free agency in a nationally televised special on 8 July 2010, it set off a firestorm of controversy throughout US sports journalism and popular culture. While the media criticised ESPN, the self-proclaimed ‘Worldwide Leader in Sports’, for its lack of journalistic integrity in the broadcasting of James’ announcement as a one-hour live special entitled The Decision, James himself was vilified in the press as ‘arrogant’, ‘selfish’ and ‘a traitor’. By taking LeBron James’ decision to join the Heat as a case study, this article proposes that James and ESPN are inextricably intertwined, for they operate under the same set of governing philosophies. Through analysis of their enmeshed relationship, alarming issues are raised regarding US sports journalism: the growing confusion regarding ethics, the spread of opportunism for profit and the media's imposition of nostalgic values on the modern athlete – values of which today's sportsman has little or no concept. As a result of this analysis, conclusions are drawn regarding the current inability of US sports journalism to police itself.

Abstract:
Although companies and organisations worldwide publish in-house journals, there is no comprehensive theory (including technical and normative dimensions) available on this important public relations instrument. In particular, no research is available on what the characteristics of excellent South African in-house journals are or ought to be. In this study a number of dimensions are thus introduced in order to help create a comprehensive framework for analysing in-house journals, in particular South Africa’s leading in-house journals. Firstly, James Grunig’s excellence in public relations theory (published in 1992), which incorporates the concept of two-way symmetrical communication (which in turn is informed by a “symmetric” world view), is put forward as basic point of departure. Secondly, a set of technical criteria for excellent in-house journals gleaned from a wide range of sources, is compiled. Furthermore, the internal and external environments in which South African in-house journals function are identified. The role of other new media (such as e-mail, intranet, television and radio) is also taken into account. Five leading South African in-house journals are then analysed and the views of editors reflected. It was found that Abacus (Absa Bank), Harmonise (Harmony Gold Mining Company), Hello the future (MTN), Pick ’n Patter (Pick ’n Pay) and Sandaba (Sanlam) all measured up well against the theoretical statements flowing from the said theoretical points of departure. However, the analysis did also bring to the fore deviations from the said statements which give new insight into what is required to publish an excellent in-house journal. In conclusion, the criteria are evaluated against some of the more detailed findings of the analysis and adapted to create a set of theoretically based guidelines that can be used by South African companies, focusing inter alia on how the unique character and environment of a company influence its internal communication, to create excellent in-house journals. In final analysis, it is argued that all factors, starting with the philosophical points of departure informing communication strategies, management’s attitude toward internal communication, organisation culture, the socio-political environment in which in-house journals function as well as the technical aspects of these publications, need to be considered when formulating criteria for “excellent” in-house journalism. This study thus endeavours to contribute to the professional integrity of public relations in a sea of asymmetric, marketing-driven internal communication.

This master study aimed to investigate the search for meaning in people who had made a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James. For this, beside literature research, we also made an empiric research. We developed a questionnaire based on interviews and testimonies collected by us. Subsequently, the questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed. We concluded that the Way of St. James is not only a Catholic route, not just a religious route. It includes numerous speeches and values, religious and secular. This allows the pilgrim to contact himself, enabling considerations and questions about himself, his life and the reality which the pilgrim belongs to. So it makes possible the construction of a new meaning for his own life

This study aims at outlining a profile of the Brazilian pilgrim. Its major concern is the pilgrim s spirituality the way it shows in the path to Saint James of Compostela, the ancient medieval pilgrimage path. The sources of our research are the narratives of Brazilian pilgrims who, after having walked the Way of Saint James, published their experiences in works classified as hodoeporic literature, travel narratives. Our hypothesis is that, despite some may consider that the jacobean route has been losing its main characteristic, to wit, the Christian message and the religious attitude expected from this kind of phenomenon, there is a huge number of pilgrims that keep its spiritual tradition alive during their journey. Thus, born within a remarkable religious context, the pilgrimage still implies the practice of religious and spiritual disposition of contemporary pilgrims, reaching far beyond tourism business exempt from spiritual values

Abstract:
The last decade has witnessed the discovery of materials combining shape memory behavior with ferromagnetic properties (FSMAs), see, e.g., James & Wuttig1, James et al.2. These materials feature the so-called giant magnetostrain effect, which, in contrast to conventional magnetostriction, is due to the motion of martensite twins. It was first observed in NiMn2Ga single crystals, Ullakko et al.3, but later discovered in polycrystals as well, see Ullakko4. This effect has motivated the development of a new class of active materials transducers, which combine intrinsic sensing capabilities with superior actuation speed and improved efficiency when compared to conventional shape memory alloys. The effect has also been found in thin films, Rumpf et al.5, and this technology is currently being developed intensively in order to pave the way for applications in micro- and nanotechnology. As an example, Kohl et al.6,7, recently proposed a novel actuation mechanism based on NiMnGa thin film technology, which makes use of both the ferromagnetic transition and the martensitic transformation allowing the realization of an almost perfect antagonism in a single component part. The implementation of the mechanism led to the award-winning development of an optical microscanner8. Possible applications in nanotechnology arise, e.g., by combination of smart NiMnGa actuators with scanning probe technologies. The key aspect of Kohl’s device is the fact that it employs electric heating for actuation, which requires a thermo-magneto-mechanical model for analysis. The research presented in this paper aims at the development of a model that simulates this particular material behavior. It is based on ideas originally developed for conventional shape memory alloy behavior, (Mueller & Achenbach9, Achenbach10, Seelecke11, Seelecke & Mueller12) and couples it with a simple expression for the nonlinear temperature-and position-dependent effective magnetic force. This early and strongly simplified version does not account for a full coupling between SMA behavior and ferromagnetism yet, and does not incorporate the hysteretic character of the magnetization phenomena either. It can however be used to explain the basic actuation mechanism and highlight the role of coupled magnetic and martensitic transformation with respect to the actuator performance. In particular will we be able to develop guidelines for desirable alloy compositions, such that the resulting transition temperatures guarantee optimized actuator performance.

Abstract:
One of the most difficult problems facing hydraulicians is the development of a method that predicts the formation of breakup ice jams. Because of the suddenness with which breakup jams and related flooding occur, prediction methods are desirable to provide early warning and allow rapid, effective ice jam mitigation. Breakup ice jam prediction models are presently limited due to the lack of an analytical description of the complex physical processes, and range from empirical single-variable threshold-type analyses to statistical methods such as logistic regression and discriminant function analysis. In this study, a neural network method is used to predict breakup ice jams at Oil City, PA. Discussion of how the neural network input vector was determined and the methods used to appropriately account for the relatively low occurrence of jams are addressed. The neural network prediction proved to be more accurate than other methods attempted at this site.

Abstract:
This article approaches the subject of musical form from the standpoint of an algorithmic composition practice. It introduces the problem of ergodicity in music, a formal situation at which music development is perceived as static. The concepts of General Periodicity by Henri Pousseur and Temporal Gestalt by James Tenney gave support to a reflection on the nature of the problem, as well as to formulate a twofold structuring procedure based on ideas of continuity and segmentation of the musical course. The devised method was implemented as a computer program to produce entire pieces of music.

An analogous comparison of reconfigurable mechanisms to James Watt’s straight line mechanism is explored to suggest as to why there is a shortage of reconfigurable mechanisms being used. A qualitative survey was undertaken to examine existing mechanisms currently being used and to identify potential applications for reconfigurable mechanisms. Eleven manufacturing plants were visited to identify high frequency motion profiles. From this survey, motion profiles were selected for potential applications of reconfigurable mechanisms. One of the motion profiles, platform transfer, was selected from a possible four identified motion profiles. A proposed reconfigurable mechanism was designed to perform the platform transfer task. The joint of the mechanism consists of two R2P2 joints connected by a P2 joint.

Abstract:
The kinematics of the transverse motion of a swimming fish are analyzed using a complex modal decomposition. Cinematographic images of a swimming whiting (Gadus merlangus) were obtained from the work of Sir James Gray (Journal of Experimental Biology, 1933). The position of the midline for each image was determined, and used to produce planar positions of virtual markers distributed along the midline of the fish. Transverse deflections of each virtual marker were used for the complex orthogonal decomposition of modes. This method was applied to a normal whiting and an amputated whiting, both of Gray’s paper. The fish motions were well represented by a single complex mode, which was used as a modal filter. The modal coordinate was also extracted. The mode and modal coordinate were used to estimate the frequency, wavelength, and wave speed. The amputated fish was compared to the non-amputated fish, and the different amount of traveling in the respective waveforms was quantified.

Abstract:
Machine faults and breakdowns are a concern for the manufacturing industry. Automated assembly machines typically employ many different types of sensors to monitor machine health and feedback faults to a central controller for review by a technician or engineer. This paper describes progress with a project whose goal is to examine the effectiveness of using machine vision to detect ‘visually cued’ faults in automated assembly equipment. Tests were conducted on a laboratory scale conveyor apparatus that assembles a simple 3-part component. The machine vision system consisted of several conventional webcams and image processing in LabVIEW. Preliminary results demonstrated that the machine vision system could identify faults such as part jams and feeder jams; however the overall effectiveness was limited as this technique can only detect faults known prior to creating the vision system. Future work to create a more robust system is currently underway.

Abstract:
Engineering and psychophysiological car following models emerge in the late 1950s (Saifuzzaman & Zheng, 2014). Such models differ in their ground concepts and explanatory mechanisms, but both assume a fundamental tenet: following each other, drivers invariably attempt to couple, keeping safety distance. More recent models focus on the spontaneous emergence of traffic jams that results from the properties of a system of interacting vehicles (i.e., without bottlenecks). In an experimental setting Sugiyama et al., (2008) have successfully recreated the conditions that allow the observation of the typical soliton wave going backwards through several car clusters. When certain speed, density and inter-vehicular distance join, so do traffic jams. Some of us have built upon these and other factors (e.g., wave movement in nature) exploring the mathematical properties of a system with three incognita that also needs three variables to be solved (Melchor & Sánchez, 2014). Two canonical car-following techniques emerge as a consequence: Driving to keep safety Distance (DD) vs Inertia (DI). Also a basic question: can drivers actually understand and follow either way, or do they stick to a basic normative driving behavior? This paper summarizes the results after three experimental studies done with a driving simulator. Several performance measures from individual drivers (accelerations, decelerations, average speed, distance to leader, and so on) were taken. As an overall indicator, results consistently announce in the three studies that DI trips consume less fuel (about 20%) than DD ones.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.3406

The URL links to a website page in the Drexel Digital Museum (DDM) fashion image archive containing a 3D interactive panorama of an evening suit by American fashion designer James Galanos with related text. This afternoon dress is from Galanos' Fall 1976 collection. It is made from pale pink silk chiffon and finished with hand stitching on the hems and edges of this dress, The dress was gifted to Drexel University as part of The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University in 2016. After it was imaged the gown was deemed too fragile to exhibit. By imaging it using high resolution GigaPan technology we are able to create an archival quality digital record of the dress and exhibit it virtually at life size in 3D panorama. The panorama is an HTML5 formatted version of an ultra-high resolution ObjectVR created from stitched tiles captured with GigaPan technology. Abstract:
The law plays a vital role in how artificial intelligence can be developed and used in ethical ways. But the law is not enough when it contains gaps due to lack of a federal nexus, interest, or the political will to legislate. And law may be too much if it imposes regulatory rigidity and burdens when flexibility and innovation are required. Sound ethical codes and principles concerning AI can help fill legal gaps. In this paper, CSET Distinguished Fellow James E. Baker offers a primer on the limits and promise of three mechanisms to help shape a regulatory regime that maximizes the benefits of AI and minimizes its potential harms.
