Abstract:
In this article, the author uses different dating methods to try to show that the Västerhus cemetery was established between c. 1125 and 1250 and that it ceased to be used between c. 1375 and 1500.This time period is later than the dates proposed previously on the basis of 14C analyses of skeletons from the cemetery. In the author's opinion, the 14C dates are probably misleading on account of reservoir effects. The Västerhus church and cemetery —which yielded one of the best preserved and rnost well-studied medieval skeletal materials in northern Europe —were thus not established at the time of Jämtland's official Christianization, as earlier claimed, but instead one or a few generations later. The author points out that several other early churches and cemeteries in Jämtland are just as late. Similar gaps in time between the official Christianization and the widespread building of churches are also known from other parts of Scandinavia.

Abstract:
This article studies how two peripheral Nordic regions (Jämtland, Sweden and Kainuu, Finland) have coped with demographic, economic, and sustainability challenges during 2010s. Hard hit by depopulation and globalization, they have implemented many measures to increase vitality, diversification, and sustainability of their economies. The process, the outcome, and local actors’ views have been analysed by utilising perspectives from regional development, smart shrinking, and sustainability transitions literatures. Research results show that Jämtland and Kainuu have succeeded in diversifying their economy, better their employment, and take steps towards sustainability by relying on place-specific resources and on collaboration with external actors. They still have challenges, especially related to demography and regional imbalance, but also potential for a stronger role in achieving national goals for a sustainable, carbon neutral society. Based on these findings, some conclusions concerning the future of these and similar regions and the design of national policies affecting them can be reached.

Abstract:
To decrease the climate impact from humanity, fossil fuels must be reduced and then completely eliminated. In order to achieve this, society's energy consumption must be reduced and alternative energysources must be developed both in small- and large scales. This can be achieved by either implementing small solar systems in the residential area or in the buildnings climate scale, but also by constructing larger solar cell parks in remote areas. In Sweden, the housing and services sector accounts for a significant part of the country's total energy consumption, where the largest consumers are energy for heating, hot water and household appliances. For these reasons, the conditions for solar energy in central Jämtland, Östersund, are investigated. This has been done by means of theoretical analysis, manual calculations and web based computation programs. By using these tools it has been established that solar power is an viable source of power even in the Nordic countries. Solar power can produce more energy than the households consume without the setup becoming excessively large. For a households with 10000 kWh heating requirement, 4000 kWh each for households and hot water use, a solar cell setup of 80 m² and a solar collector plant with an area of 13.2 m², can produce more energy than the entire household’s energy consumption, it can also sell around 2000 kWh of electrical energy to the local powergrid each year.

Abstract:
The Regional Council of Jämtland has a goal to increase the export of renewable energy and with that reduce the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the measures used to reach this goal is to give subsidies and tax reductions for investments in photovoltaics. Photovoltaics are generally perceived as “good for the environment” and give a “good image” to companies. They are marketed as interesting for private persons and farmers from a profitability point of view. Sweden has an electricity mix with average CO2 emissions of 20-30 g/kWh. Compared to other countries in Europe this is very low. The CO2 emissions of photovoltaics during their lifetime are 46 g/kWh according to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Taking this in consideration it can be concluded that photovoltaics actually increase GHG emissions as they have higher emissions of CO2 than the average in Sweden. When the decision to invest in photovoltaics is made with profitability as a main reason, it is debatable if the subsidies and tax reductions are needed. When the decision to invest in photovoltaics is made with environmental concern as a main reason, the subsidies might be given to other environmental technologies that are better from a climate perspective. Considering this, the push for profitability of photovoltaics can be seen as just another increase in consumption.

Full text
Abstract:
The mountain area in the most northwest part of Jämtland is Frostviken, which during the latter part of the Weichsel had a complicated deglaciation process. Glaciofluvial landforms such as accumulations of moraine, lineations and lateral meltwater channels are evident in the landscape. Glaciofluvial studies of postglacial areas emphasize knowledge about sediment transport that has changed soil layer sequences and reshaped the landscape. This knowledge can also be used in community planning and agriculture to adapt the expansion or rebuilding of the existing environment. During the deglaciation, the extensive ice lake Frostviksissjön was formed, an ice lake where the main spillway has not been interpreted in previous studies. The work has been based on a historical chronological literature study together with an analysis of LiDAR data to ensure and question the glaciofluvial transport in the landscape. In this study, a possible main spillway has been presented for Frostviksissjön on the eastern side of Storberget. The ice lake has been reconstructed using a shore level map from SGU. The landforms in the area have been studied in accordance with whether they originate from the most recent glaciation during the Weichsel period or derives from previous glaciations.

Abstract:
This study examines landscape change in the Province of Jämtland during c. 1000–1750 AD. Settlement and arable cultivation are two of the most important sources in this study. They are therefore treated in depth, particularly farmsteads that were deserted during the late medieval agrarian crisis, so-called ödesbölen, and their fossil field-traces. The dissertation contains four major investigations. In the first investigation 610 possible ödesbölen were identified. The desertion was estimated at 50 per cent. The second investigation had its focus on the geographic location, and the conclusion was that the ödesbölen may have been deserted when the climate turned colder in the 14th century. The third investigation concerned medieval agriculture. Using historical maps and detailed mapping of fossil field traces it was established that the annually cultivated acreage decreased from the High Middle Ages until early modern times. This probably means that the agrarian crisis caused a change in the agrarian regime, from predominant arable farming to predominant stock-raising. The fourth investigation was whether the ownership or the use of the ödesbölen created obstacles to recolonization when the crisis subsided. This turned out not to be so in the case of ownership, but may have been so with regard to communal forest grazing. According to historical maps the ödesbölen in Jämtland were finally recolonized about 200 years later than for example in southern Sweden. The reasons probably were wars and a worse climate. The dissertation is capped off with both a model and a description of landscape change in Jämtland. Characteristic for the development of the landscape has been fluctuations in settlement. The ödesbölen are part of a pattern in which they are colonized, deserted, recolonized and again deserted in a cyclical course of events. The openness of the landscape is not part of this course of events.

Abstract:
In this paper an approach to studying ritual bone depositions by reconstructing the taphonomic history of the zooarchaeological remains is presented. By methodically examining the taphonomic evidence from the chain of events, from the selection of animals to the killing, from the processing and utilization of the carcass to the deposition of the bones, different stages of a ritual, such as animal sacrifice, can be studied and understood. A bone assemblage from a Viking Age cult place at Frösö church in Jämtland in central Sweden (late 10th–early 11th century AD) will serve as an example of the approach. The analysis shows that brown bear and piglets were specifically selected to be used in the rituals, while horses were not important sacrificial animals in the cult, as has otherwise been indicated by written sources. Seasonal analysis indicates that sacrifices took place at three periods of the year. Butchering marks reveal the intense utilization of the carcasses and that meat was consumed. Body part frequency shows that bears were treated differently from other species, which could be the result of an influence of Saami ritual practice. The bones were deposited on the ground beneath a birch tree and carcasses were not hung in the tree as some written sources indicate.

Weldon, James, and Carlotta Meriggi. Modelling the risks of invasive aquatic species spread in Swedish lakes. Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.r68r25qcb1.

Full text
Abstract:
Species distribution modelling is a valuable tool for identifying areas most at risk of the spread of invasive species. Here we model the environmental factors governing the distributions of two invasive species of concern that are currently found in Sweden at only a limited number of locations: the aquatic macrophyte Elodea nuttallii (Nuttall’s waterweed / smal vattenpest) and the bivalve Dreissena polymorpha (Zebra mussel / vandrarmussla). For E.nuttallii, the greatest risk factors are connectivity with other water bodies (facilitating dispersion), human population density and length of growing season. This implies that it is principally well-connected lakes in populated areas of southern Sweden that are most at risk of further spread (although other areas of concern are identified). For D.polymorpha, water alkalinity and the proportion of agricultural land (a source of nutrient pollution) are the most important factors, and the models identify lakes Vänern and Vättern, waters in parts of Östergötland, Jämtland and Gotland as key areas of concern for further spread.

Lundström, Karl. Rikstäckande inventering av häckande storskarv (Phalacrocorax carbo) i Sverige 2023. Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.6tcqoqona2.

Full text
