One special case is the art-biography projectshowing the need to reinterpret the author’s current biographical facts. Neerlandica Wratislaviensia 30 (March 30, 2021): 61–76. http://dx.doi.org/10.19195/0860-0716.30.5.

Abstract:
This article presents two 17th-century poets, Joost van den Vondel and Jan Andrzej Morsztyn, against the backgrounds of the Dutch and the Polish Golden Age. They were ‘connected’ in their times: both through poetry and politics. Vondel’s Parnaes aen de Belt (1657) included a poem for Tobiasz, the brother of the Polish poet, in which he was praised as the “Getrouwste hofstijl der Sarmaeten” (Most fidel court pillar of the Sarmatians); and also Jan Andrzej received praise here. In his other poems, Vondel had written about the greatness of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, among other things about the city of Danzig (Polish: Gdańsk), which he, in his ode “Bestand tusschen Polen en Zweden. Aen Dantzik”; (Truce between Poland and Sweden. For Danzig”; 1635), called the “Parrel aen de Kroon van Polen” (Pearl at the Crown of Poland). On the other hand, the Morsztyn brothers were interested in the developments of the Republic of the United Provinces. Like many other foreigners, they undertook a Peregrinatio Academica to Leiden where they could see the prosperity of the Republic at first hand, together with other Poles (including the poet-preacher Samuel Przypkowski, the poet-preacher Andrzej Węgierski or the later secretary of the Polish King Andrzej Rej). This Polish circle in the Republic is also shown here. However, there is a double meaning to be discovered in the connection ‘Morsztyn-Vondel’: there was more politics in it than poetry. Morsztyn’s perspective was mainly directed to France (even against the Polish king) — and Vondel’s perspective not to Poland as a political power, but to the Dutch ‘Moedernegotie’ (Mother of all trades) in the Baltic Sea, between the Danish Sound and Danzig. This double meaning is also shown here.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of aprince dressing as a gardener to approach his beloved is dear to the European theatrical tradition: the model of Don Duardos by Gil Vicente (1562), reprinted in El rincipe viñador by Luis Vélez de Guevara (1668), is also used in French theatre, which proposes a variation in Le Prince déguisé by Georges de Scudery (1636), partly based on the novel Grisel y Mirabella by Juan de Flores (1524). This subject was later integrated into 17th century Italian theatre, starting with Venetian opera. This essay analyses in particular some works produced in Venice in the middle of the century, starting with Il prencipe giardiniero by Benedetto Ferrari (1644), whose subject anticipates first L’Oristeo (1651) by Giovanni Faustini and Francesco Cavalli, and Laurindo by Gio. Andrea Moniglia, written in 1657 and printed as Il principe giardiniere under the name of Giacinto Andrea Cicognini starting from 1664.

Duncan Bell considers the extraordinary vision of an “Anglo-world” developed in the last decades of the 19th century by the Scots-American magnate Andrew Carnegie. Bell situates Carnegie’s writings of the 1880s and 1890s in the context of what he describes as “social dreaming on both sides of the Atlantic”, both in terms of Utopian literature and in those of more politicised theses current in elite intellectual circles: “democratic war” (HG Wells and William James); “empire peace” (JA Hobson and DG Ritchie), and “racial peace”.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates women’s infiltration of mumblecore, an indie subgenre associated with auteurs such as Andrew Bujalski, Mark and Jay Duplass and Joe Swanberg, for feminist ends. In representing relationships among twenty-something millennials, mumblecore’s cheap, lo-fi digital aesthetic and anti-mainstream values of ‘authenticity’ are congenial to indie female practitioners such as Lynn Shelton, So Yong Kim and Desiree Akhavan. Rather than simple appropriations of a ‘male’ genre, their work represents a ‘reframing’ not only of mumblecore but indie cinema generally, which mumblecore has recently epitomised. In films with a feminist focus on female aspirations and insecurities but that also accommodate queer and racial perspectives, these practitioners transpose the mumblecore ‘ethos’ to accommodate otherwise marginalised subjectivities and experiences.

Legaz, Alfonso. "Wunderblock.

Full text
