THE EPILOGUE OF JAN ANDRZEJ MORSZTYN’S CASE IN 1683This article is devoted to the epilogue of diplomatic endeavours of Jan Andrzej Morsztyn in 1683. In that year, the Polish-Lithuanian monarch, Jan III. Sobieski, preparing military campaign to save Vienna from Turks, aimed to change state foreign policy. This change was to involve breaking relations with France and establishing an alliance with Austria. Abstract:
This article presents two 17th-century poets, Joost van den Vondel and Jan Andrzej Morsztyn, against the backgrounds of the Dutch and the Polish Golden Age. They were ‘connected’ in their times: both through poetry and politics. Vondel’s Parnaes aen de Belt (1657) included a poem for Tobiasz, the brother of the Polish poet, in which he was praised as the “Getrouwste hofstijl der Sarmaeten” (Most fidel court pillar of the Sarmatians); and also Jan Andrzej received praise here. Edward Porębowicz in a study Andrzej Morsztyn, przedstawiciel baroku w poezji polskiej (1893), gives new meaning to Morsztyn’s work, demonstrating that his poems are not part of the romantic aesthetic but they fully belong to the baroque current. Thus, Porębowicz proves that one can reconstruct the meaning of a literary work. However, a very wide erudition and general knowledge of culture are necessary.
