BALCONI, PAOLO. "IL ROMANZO EPISTOLARE NELL'INGHILTERRA DEL SETTECENTO: IL CASO DI JANE AUSTEN." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/689.

Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the epistolary novel in England in the second half of the eighteenth century, particularly on works written by women. The purpose of this study is to understand how Jane Austen (with her early writings and “Lady Susan”) represents both a synthesis of and a turning point in eighteenth-century novels in letters. In particular, two fields of study will converge into the works by Jane Austen: the first part, divided into three chapters, focuses on the importance of Samuel Richardson at the middle of the century (chapter 1) and of some woman writers such as Sarah Fielding, Charlotte Smith and Frances Burney (chapter 2), whereas chapter 3 is dedicated to the “golden period” of the English epistolary novel during the ‘80s and ‘90s. The second part of the dissertation is divided into four chapters and focuses more specifically on Jane Austen’s role within the development of the style and the fortune of the novel in letters. After a short autobiography of the author and an analysis of the correspondence between her and her sister Cassandra (chapters 4 and 5) in order to underline the importance of letters in Jane Austen’s upbringing, chapter 6 is dedicated to the Juvenilia, that is to say the works written between 15 to 20 years of age, while chapter 7 focuses on “Lady Susan”, a novel which represents the renunciation of the epistolary style by the author.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis is an analysis of the concept of space and its representations in the novels of Janet Frame. Geography, movements, travels, places and dwellings are the basic elements that are examined in order to reveal the cultural and philosophical background of the author. In this perspective, both as an intellectual and as a fiction writer, Frame reveals her extremely original position in relation to some crucial issues such as New Zealand identity and the cross-cultural ties between the English-speaking countries.

Mayali, Nohad. Paris 11, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA112327.

Full text
Abstract:
Bean Yellow Mosaic Virus (BYMV, a Potyvirus) is today the most severe disease affecting the bean on account of the damage caused, of its frequency, geographical extension, and easy dissemination by aphids, and of the high susceptibility of most cultivars available. This virus may contaminate many other plant species including peas, thus encouraging breeders to emphasize selection for resistance to this disease. The purpose of the works presented in this thesis was 1/ To gain à better understanding of the virus populations occurring in the Paris Basin and involved in breeding, by the symptomatological and biological characterization of isolates on a wide range of differential hosts, the study of their actual agricultural impact on a few cultivars, the purification and characterization of virus particles, the preparation of antisera, and the carrying out of discriminatory serological tests. 2/ To examine certain epidemiological parameters of the disease, from certain isolates, by carrying out: a field and glasshouse study of the post-infection behaviour of some of the currently most important bean and pea cultivars, an analysis of virus translocation in a few cultivars after contamination at various levels and times, a study of the virus transmission by aphids (Mysus persicae and Aphis fabae) and by seeds. The results obtained allow a better characterization of the BYMV populations available and provide epidemiological information about the behaviour of many cultivars. Therefore, they also yield concrete information which should aid breeders in devising better schemes for the use of resistance sources taking into account the variability of this potyvirus

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Investigating the links between environmental variability and life history traits, dispersal and breeding decisions is critical challenge for ecologists. I have examined this issue in anuran, the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata). In the first part of my thesis, I have examined the influence of spatio-temporal variation of the environment on the covariation patterns between life history traits, dispersal and behavioral types at inter-population scale. I have investigated how the level of breeding habitat stochasticity may regulate the position of B. variegata populations along the slow-fast continuum and may promote dispersal syndromes among populations. Then I have analyzed the consequence of such dispersal syndromes on population genetic differentiation. In the second part of my thesis, I have focused on the role of the environmental canalization in the life history strategy of B. variegata and I have evaluated how various forms of weather variation (mean and extreme events) could affect the dynamics of different populations. In each studied populations, I have quantified the impacts of weather variation on various demographic parameters as survival, recruitment and breeding probabilities. In the third part of my thesis, I have investigated female mate choice in B. variegata by successively examining good genes and compatible gene hypotheses, and then by evaluating the role of breeding habitat quality and availability on mating decisions

Ventelon-Debout, Marjolaine. Perpignan, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PERP0525.

Abstract:
Rice Yellow Mottle Virus (RYMV) is one of the most damaging pathogens of rice (Oryza sativa) in Africa. O. Sativa comprises two groups of subspecies: O. S. Indica , very susceptible to RYMV infection and O. S. Japonica, partially resistant. Our project concerns the study of the transcriptome and the proteome of two varieties, a RYMV susceptible one (IR64, O. S. Indica) and a partially resistant one (Azucena, O. S. Japonica). Our main objectives are to identify and characterize the specific responses to RYMV of the two cultivars at the early stages of infection. Transcriptionnal expression is largely disturbed. Photosynthetic genes, metabolic genes and defense related genes are deregulated during RYMV infection specifically in each cultivar

Bateman, Richard Gethin. "Improvising resistance : jazz, poetry, and the Black Arts Movement, 1960-1969." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/287563.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an interdisciplinary analysis of jazz music and poetry produced by African-American artists, primarily in New York, over the course of the 1960s, set within the broad context of the civil-rights and black-nationalist movements of the same period. Its principal contention is that the two forms afford each other symbiotic illumination. Close reading of jazz musicology in particular illuminates the directions taken by the literature of the period in a manner that has rarely been fully explored. By giving equal critical attention to the two artistic forms in relation to each other, the epistemological and social radicalism latent and explicit within them can more fully be understood. Through this understanding comes also a greater appreciation of the effects that the art of this period had upon the politics of civil rights and black nationalism in America - effects which permeated wider culture during a decade in which significant change was made to the legal position of African-Americans within the United States, change forced by a newly, and multiply, vocalized African-American consciousness. The thesis examines the methods by which jazz and literature contributed to the construction of new historically-constituted black subjectivities represented aurally, orally and visually. It looks at how the different techniques of each form converse with each other, and how they prompt consequential re-presentations and re cognizations of established forms from within and without their own continua. That examination is conducted primarily through forensic close readings of records made between 1960 and 1967, which though of widely differing styles nevertheless can be said to fall under the broad umbrella term of 'post-bop' jazz, alongside equally close readings of poetry written primarily by members of the New York wing of the equally broadly-termed Black Arts Movement [BAM] between 1964 and 1969.
