Full textFerritic-martensitic steels are excellent potential candidates for a use as structural materials in future fusion reactors. For this application, they will have to withstand high fluxes of 14 MeV neutrons that will create atomic displacement cascades and transmutation reactions which will produce large quantities of helium. In order to understand the basic mechanisms under irradiation with helium, we have studied the effects of helium and those of chromium. Pure iron and a Fe-5.4 wt. % Cr model alloy were irradiated at the JANNuS platform in dual-beam mode with Fe+ and He+ ions and in single-beam mode with Fe+ ions at 500ºC. This platform enabled us to follow the evolution of damage up to low doses (1 dpa) and to characterize the microstructure at high doses (100 dpa). It also allowed us to observe in situ irradiation/implantation kinetic effects in a TEM coupled to two accelerators. The nature and distribution of irradiation defects was determined: they are essentially dislocation loops with a<100> Burgers vectors and cavities/bubbles. We have demonstrated that the co-implantation of helium and the addition of chromium both reduce the mobility of dislocation loops. The addition of chromium reduces swelling for all the irradiation conditions studied, with or without helium. In pure iron irradiated with helium, an original phenomenon was discovered for the first time: cavities/bubbles nucleate heterogeneously on the planes of the dislocation loops. We have also interpreted our experimental results in pure iron irradiated with helium using the cluster dynamics code CRESCENDO

As many countries, Canada has been built by the hands of immigrants. The great amount of people who have been looking for a better life in Canada made it a country of many cultures. On the one hand, the nation has been presented as land of opportunities. On the other hand, a reality of prejudice and discrimination overshadows an all-embracing nation. In order to regulate the immigrants' situation in the country, the Canadian Multiculturalism Act was instituted to guarantee equal rights and freedom to all cultures, besides preserving and enhancing multiculturalism in Canada. Many immigrant writers have been writing about immigration and the implications of multiculturalism. Many critics, theorists and writers support these policies while others severely criticize them. Interestingly, the works of the Asian-Caribbean writer Cyril Dabydeen have been read both as a celebration and a criticism to themes related to immigrants' issues. Dabydeen depicts himself as a Janus-faced person, someone who feels the need of looking in different directions. Janus represents the contemplation of past happenings while looking towards the future. In this work, I will analyze Dabydeen's poetry in dialogue with his prose works in order to demonstrate the development of his craft as writer. In his early works, he used to make a direct criticism the issues of immigration, as it can be observed in the poems "Lady Icarus" and "Señorita." Dabydeen's more recent works are full of historical references and use of language in a way that may allow both a celebration to multiculturalism and a criticism to the policies regulated by the dominant culture, as in "Multiculturalism."

Full text"Janus nanoparticles" is the term used to refer to colloidal nanoparticles made of two halves with different physical and chemical properties. Over the last years, several theoretical studies have been published on the self-assembly possibilities offered by these particles (in particular by Sciortino, F. et al.), but little experimental work has been done on them. The theoretical studies suggest that many interesting behaviors appear when the size of the particles approaches the interaction range of the forces at play (tens of nanometers in the case of van der Waals and hydrophobic forces). In this manuscript, we show the formation of clusters of Au–SiO₂ heterodimers with sizes of less than 100nm. The self-assembly was induced by exchanging the hydrophilic ligand on the Au surface with a hydrophobic one, which provided the attractive interaction. The assembly was followed by time-resolved absorption spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. We found that shorter thiols have a longer induction period, and cause the particles to come closer together, compared to thiols with longer tails. We also study a second system: CdSe nanoplatelets. These are semiconducting quasi-2D structures with unique optical properties. These properties result from their reduced size in one of the dimensions. Because of their novelty and particularity, the nucleation and growth mechanism of these particles is still being studied. We followed the synthesis using in-situ SAXS and WAXS, to obtain information with regards to this mechanism and to study the deformation which occurs in some of these systems which leads to rolled up sheets of CdSe. The CdSe nanoplatelets were also used to create hybrid CdSe–Au structures. The combination of these two materials has already proven to produce unique effects such as enhanced catalysis and, combined with the reduced dimensionality and control of the platelets, could result in even more interesting characteristics. We propose a synthesis method which results in the formation of small gold spheres on the corners of the platelets. We show that the size of the spheres depends on the amount of precursor used, and show high resolution electron microscopy images which highlight the crystalline structure of both materials

Full textIn recent years, our team has developed original compartmented lipid nanometer-sized particles produced by high pressure homogenization, a scalable process, with pharmaceutically approved excipients. The particles actually belong to the family of Janus nano-objects as they are organized in two juxtaposed substructures : one half is a droplet of liquid-state lipids while the other half is vesicle-like and encloses an aqueous core delimited by a phospholipid-containing bilayer shell. Added to the intrinsic biocompatibility of the constituting lipids, such a system provides a potentially very valuable tool in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields, able to separately incorporate and co-convey hydrophilic and lipophilic substances with distinct activities, for example, a medical imaging agent and a drug for coupling diagnosis and therapy. Here, we are interested in loading Janus nanoparticles with a magnetic fluid composed of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals (ferrofluid, FF), indeed as efficient contrast agent for MRI, being magnetically targetable and providing ability for hyperthermia treatment. Alternately, hydrophilic or lipophilic FF compatible with the production process have been developed by investigating different stabilization pathways of the nanocrystals depending on the encapsulation compartment

Full textThe present Thesis has been dedicated to the study, development, and implementations of new methodologies synthesize Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) based multifunctional composites. Accordingly, two main lines of work can be distinguished through the lecture of this Thesis: i) the synthesis of Janus metal@MOFs particles and their partial functionalization for applications in removal of heavy metal ions, application in self-propelled and fluorescence; ii) the incorporation of active molecules into the MOFs through of creating controlled defects, and the use of the resulting composites in the removal of heavy metal ions. In the Chapter 1, we review the evolution of the field of the MOFs including a brief historical introduction and the presentation of the main synthetic routes, properties and applications. We pay special attention to the current methodologies to synthesis MOFs and their miniaturization and their improvements of their properties and their possible applications. We mention the importance of the possibilities as well to create MOF composites combining the intrinsic properties of MOFs and other functional materials (i.e. magnetic materials, fluorescence, catalytic). In Chapter 2, cites the general and specific objectives of this PhD Thesis. Chapter 3 describes the methodology used for the synthesis of Janus metallic@MOFs particles. This methodology is based on the selective evaporation of metallic components on the MOFs surfaces and is carried out in different steps: i) synthesis of MOFs and their control size; ii) fabrication of MOFs monolayers on surfaces through the controlled deposition based on solvent evaporation; iii) evaporation of metal components through the electron bean evaporation technique, iv) detachment of the MOFs from the surfaces obtaining the Janus metallic@MOFs nanoparticles. The versatility of this methodology has allowed us to synthesis different MOF based composites, and in addition, we present the magnetic, fluorescence and catalytic properties that were evaluated in different Janus metallic@MOFs nanoparticles. In chapter 4, we explored another kind of composites based on the combination of MOFs and organic functional molecules. We studied the incorporation of functional molecules into the MOFs creating defects into the network of the MOFs. In particular, we evaluated the incorporating of Xylenol Orange (XO) that has coordinative carboxylic groups and a strong capacity to chelate heavy metal ions. We studied the mechanism of the integration of XO into the MOF and their influence on the formation of the MOF, and in addition, we evaluated the final properties and specially the capacity to remove heavy metal ions.

Full textThis project aimed to systematically investigate the interactions, microstructure and dynamics in suspensions of colloidal particles that mimic active motions, using (Ultra) Small- Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS/SAXS) and X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS). As opposed to the conventional passive colloids (Brownian particles), active colloids are non-equilibrium systems consisting of self-propelled particles that display many fascinating dynamics, such as streaming, swarming, flocking, etc. in appropriate media. Practical examples of active systems are motile microorganisms, such as some species of bacteria, or synthetic Janus colloids – characterized by an asymmetric chemical composition of their surface – that can induce a propulsion mechanisms, like self-diffusiophoresis. The foci of this thesis are on interparticle interactions, particle-medium interactions and the phoretic dynamics in active systems.Firstly, the structure and motility of Escherichia coli bacteria were investigated by combined USAXS and SAXS methods. As an offshoot, the scattering data spanning a broad scattering vector (q)-range permitted the derivation of a multiscale structural model by combining colloidal (cell-body), membrane (cell-envelope) and polymer (flagella) features. This model was further refined by contrast-variation Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) measurements on E. coli suspensions at three match points and the full contrast which allowed the determination of the membrane electron-density and the inter-membrane distances on a quantitative scale. These bacteria were then used as active component in a mixture with micron-sized passive silica colloids, with the aim of investigating how the effective interactions and dynamics of passive colloids are affected by the presence and the motility of active E. coli. Both static and hydrodynamic information were obtained via the simultaneous use of USAXS and XPCS techniques. Data suggested active bacteria act as a fluidizing agent in such systems, reducing attractive interactions and enhancing the dynamics of passive colloids, which, at the same time, are affected by the buffer and more viscous environment due to the bacterial presence. Finally, the phoretic motions of micron-sized silica colloids and half-coated silica/nickel Janus colloids suspended in a mixture of 3-methylpyridine (3MP) and water/heavy water undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation were investigated using USAXS and XPCS. Due to the preferential wetting of 3MP on the silica surface, the motion of the colloids is strongly correlated to the dynamics of phase separation.Silica colloids displayed advective motion with enhanced diffusion toward the 3MP-rich phase reminiscent of self-propelled motion until the phase separation is completed. Suspensions of Janus colloids showed a much richer scenario, where colloid dynamics are strongly influenced by the asymmetric interactions with the solvent. The dynamics of Janus colloids were either enhanced or suppressed depending on the 3MP concentration, which, concurrently, affected the microstructure of the system. As opposed to the partitioning in 3MP-rich phase in the case of silica colloids, Janus particles behave like surfactants at the interface. The thesis demonstrates the ability of studying active systems by means of scattering methods and probe their behaviour in the thermodynamic limit and complement the information derived from direct microscopy observations

Full textAt the single-particle level, the main difference between active colloids and passive ones is the time scale over which the motion crosses over from ballistic to diffusive regime. In both cases, friction coefficients or equivalently diffusion coefficients determine this time scale. For instance, the motion of a passive colloid of 1m radius is diffusive when observed over lag times longer than a microsecond, once the direction of its momentum has been randomized by collisions with solvent molecules. At the macroscopic scale these collisions are accounted for by the translational friction coefficient. For an active colloid the effective diffusive behavior observed over lag times larger than few seconds results from the randomization of the direction of self-propulsion by rotational diffusion. In this thesis we investigated the motion of an active Janus colloid trapped at air-water interface. Spherical catalytic Janus colloids have been prepared through the deposition of platinum metal at the surface of silica particles. Immersion depth of the Janus colloid as well as their orientation with respect to the water surface, has been characterized and interpreted in terms of the non-uniform wetting properties of the Janus particles. The motion of the active Janus colloids in the presence of various concentration of hydrogen peroxide H2O2 as fuel was characterized by video microscopy and the trajectories analyzed through the mean square displacement and the velocity autocorrelation function. The types of trajectories, directional and circular ones that we observed in our experiments, revealed the effective force and torque induced by the catalytic decomposition of H2O2. At the water surface, active colloids perform more persistent directional motions as compared to the motions performed in the bulk. This has been interpreted as due to the loss of degrees of freedom resulting from the confinement at interface and also to the partial wetting conditions that possibly bring new contributions to the rotational friction at interface

Abstract: Inflammatory hyperalgesia results from the sensitization of peripheral afferent nociceptors by inflammatory mediators. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is one of the major signaling molecules involved in hyperalgesia, being able to act directly on nociceptors, inducing sensitization. The Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) is an intracellular signaling molecule generally associated with cytokines signaling pathway, and its activity can be increased in nociceptors after peripheral inflammation. However, there are no evidences about the role JAK2 directly plays in PGE2-induced sensitization of nociceptors. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore a possible role for JAK2 in PGE2 mediated sensitization. The data of this study showed in cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, that the administration of PGE2 alters capsaicin-induced calcium transients, and the pre-incubation of the cells with the JAK2 selective inhibitor AG490 blocks this effect. In addition, the intrathecal administration of AG490 in rats reduces the hyperalgesia induced by local administration of PGE2 or carrageenan in the hindpaw. AG490 intrathecal administration also blocks PKCepsilon activation in the ipsilateral L5 DRG induced by inflammation of peripheral tissue. In conclusion, the present study indicates that the JAK2 expressed in the DRG may have a role in the sensitization of nociceptors by a peripheral inflammatory event. Moreover, the inhibition of JAK2 may be a possible novel pharmacological target for the control of the inflammatory hyperalgesia

Full textThe aim of this work is to study the nanoscale Seebeck effect at hot nanostructures. At first, we study the thermo-electrophoresis self-propulsion mechanism for a heated metal capped Janus colloid. The self-propulsion mechanism is mainly induced by the electrolyte Seebeck effect or thermoelectric effect. This effect takes its origin from the separation of charges occurring while a temperature gradient is present in a electrolyte solution: A strong absorption of laser light by the metal side of the particle creates a temperature gradient which in turn acts on ion-species (positive and negative) and drives them to the hot or the cold region. This motion of ion results in a dipolar electric field which, close to the particle, depends strongly on the surface properties. The change of behavior of the electric field at the insulating or conducting surface does not affect the velocity of the particle. At second, we study the effect of hydrodynamic interactions and counterion condensation in thermophoresis for DNA polymer. As the main result, the thermophoretic mobility shows, in function of the chain length, a non-monotonuous behavior and consists of two contributions induced by the dominant driving forces which are the thermally induced permittivity-gradient and the electrolyte Seebeck effect. At the end, we compare our theoretical result with recent experiment on single-stranded DNA

Full textThis paper examines how the same historical event can have different meanings in films. Today people are more likely to watch a film about a historical event than to read a history book, and this means that we must learn and understand the conventions used to place history on film. The history film can be said to possess a palimpsetic historical consciousness in which layers of fact and myth come together rather than be separated. But for a historical event to fit within the film's time frame, it must be processed and this results in that certain people, events and movements are given priority, while others are excluded. Therefore, this paper studies what has been added/excluded and the effects on the context and credibility, how the film claims its authenticity, and how the author/filmmakers affects the credibility. The results of the analysis of two films about the Cuban revolution, shows that depending on which part of the historical event depicted, the films create entirely different stories with very different message. While the film Che-Part One (2008) serves as a celebration of the guerrilla fighter Che Guevara as Cuba's savior, according to a leftist ideology and the film is expressing U.S. disdain, the other film The Lost City (2005) however, portrays the revolutions backside, it shows a right-wing ideology, family values and the U.S. as the land of freedom and dreams. Both films use similar stylistic strategies to achieve illusion of authenticity, and the films' creators affect the films credibility in different amounts. What I finally conclude, is that the history film should not be considered as truth, but serve to arouse interest, which will hopefully lead the spectator to seek more knowledge about the historical event.

Full textThe present work intends to study Janus Korczak and his relation with judaism and sionism. Korczak was a polish jew, borned in Warsaw, in 1878, who belonged to a family of assimilated scholars and felt trully polish. He was a phisician, an educator, a journalist, a writer and founder of two orphanages, that followed the democratic principles of education: one of them jewish, Don Sierot (1912-1942) ) and the other one christian, Nasz Dom (1919-1936). The analysis of correspondences, interviews, and other documents related to judaism, sionism and the land of Israel, allowed us to aknowledge Korczaks vision of the jewish question in an antisemitic Poland of the 19th and 20th centuries. The documents analised referred mainly to the two trips that Korczak made to the land of Israel, and included his personal impressions of the benefits of the Land, as well as the difficulties of adaptation to this ancestral ground, and of leaving the homeland for good. Altough Korczak intended to emigrate to Palestine, he was not able to do it, because as a victim of the Shoah, he was sent, with the 200 jewish children and the teachers of his orphanage, from the Guetto of Warsaw to the train hat would lead them to Treblinka.
