Abstract:
During the last few years, several variants of P. Lévy's formula for the stochastic area of complex Brownian motion have been obtained. These are of interest in various domains of applied probability, particularly in relation to polymer studies. The method used by most authors is the diagonalization procedure of Paul Lévy.Here we derive one such variant of Lévy's formula, due to Chan, Dean, Jansons and Rogers, via a change of probability method, which reduces the computation of Laplace transforms of Brownian quadratic functionals to the computations of the means and variances of some adequate Gaussian variables. We then show that with the help of linear algebra and invariance properties of the distribution of Brownian motion, we are able to derive simply three other variants of Lévy's formula.

Abstract:

German written sources are representing information on masquerade traditions in Latvia already in the 17th century - Latvian mask parades in 1636 are described by the Kurzeme and Zemgale Superintendent, P. Einhorn. (Jansons 2010: 49). Information about the Latvian masquerade traditions from the Christian Church sources in the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century have been negative, which is analyzed in 30-ties of the 20th century by ethnologist Jānis Alberts Jansons in his work "The Latvian mask parades”, but through a field study at the beginning of 21st century conclusion can be drawn that these traditions have been explicitly significant within the rural cultural environment up to 60-70-ies of the 20th century. Research of traditions does not lose its importance also in today's multicultural society, as it helps to understand the human philosophy of life and relationship with nature of the rural cultural environment.

This article aims to describe the two Christmas masquerade traditions ‘īšonu gradzēs’ and ‘идти коледовать’ (‘īt kaladnīkūs’– to go mummery), where in Latvia, as elsewhere in the world, "mask parades are associated with celebrations and public holidays” (Rancāne 2008: 217). The paper is also dealing with two Easter traditions – ‘ходить по алелуя’ (walk alelujah), and ‘īt laluoti’ in several aspects related to the Christian church traditions, but inheritance of them has been performed in family, by transfer of the knowledge and skills from generation to generation. In course of the research attention focuses on origin, rites and social sense of the tradition: ‘īšona gradzēs, идти коледовать, ходить по алелуя’ and ‘īt laluoti’. Similarities and dissimilarities are revealed in ritual processes of the said traditions.

Research hypothesis: upon analysis of winter and spring cycle anniversary celebration rituals of the ethnic groups residing in Latgale, it is possible to discover features of syncretism of these traditions. Features of syncretism of the traditions become apparent in two ways. First, through interaction between the Christian church and folk traditions, which is characterized by: adjustment of the ritual traditions to calendar of the Christian Church holidays, not the natural cycle of solstice; music repertoire, where the narrators do not distinguish between folk songs and the chants, calling then God's songs, and functionality, where the performers of rituals, as narrators indicate, are the first carriers of Christ's message.

Second, syncretism emerges in traditions of various ethnic groups, affected both by ethnic groups living in the Latgale borderland, the cultural environment developed by them and usage of languages. as well as interaction between the lyrics and musical repertoire and personal experience, grounded on the tradition inherited in the family.

The study is based on materials of the Latvian Folklore Depository and field research interviews conducted by author of the article in Ludza 2005-2008 (currently Ludza, Kārsava, Cibla, Krāslava and Zilupe municipalities), which covers informatively dense time period: 30-70-ties of the 20th century. The comparative method is used for analysis, where information derived in the field studies is compared to materials from published sources and literature with regard to the rituals of Christmas masquerade tradition and Easter tradition. Theoretical basis of research comprises publications of Latvian (Jānis Alberts Jansons, Aīda Rancāne, Anda Beitāne, etc.) and Polish ethnomusicologist (Gustav Juzala) and other folklore specialists.

Expressions of syncretism in seasonal rituals in the Latgale borderland are not specifically studied, therefore the author's research is considered to be innovative, but it is not completed and represents only early stages of more serious study.

Alzubaidi, Hasan. "Efficient exponential timestepping algorithm using control variate technique for simulating a functional of exit time of one-dimensional Brownian diffusion with applications in finance." Arabian Journal of Mathematics 9, no. 3 (2020): 495–511. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s40065-020-00287-w.

Abstract:
Abstract The exponential timestepping Euler algorithm with a boundary test is adapted to simulate an expected of a function of exit time, such as the expected payoff of barrier options under the constant elasticity of variance (CEV) model. However, this method suffers from a high Monte Carlo (MC) statistical error due to its exponentially large exit times with unbounded samples. To reduce this kind of error efficiently and to speed up the MC simulation, we combine such an algorithm with an effective variance reduction technique called the control variate method. We call the resulting algorithm the improved Exp algorithm for abbreviation. In regard to the examples we consider in this paper for the restricted CEV process, we found that the variance of the improved Exp algorithm is about six times smaller than that of the Jansons and Lythe original method for the down-and-out call barrier option. It is also about eight times smaller for the up-and-out put barrier option, indicating that the gain in efficiency is significant without significant increase in simulation time.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to explore the phenomenon of Moominmamma via biographical and intertextual reading of the Moomin books by Tove Jansson. Moominmamma is a sophisticated figure, multileveled and dynamic within the series. Furthermore, she seems to be the most deliberate character already from the first volume. She embodies not only tolerance and joy inspired by Jansson’s mother, Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, but her characterization also includes deeper intertextual references. Experienced readers can, for example, spot elements of the élan vital concept by Henri Bergson, Socratic maieutics, or features of the apostle Paul’s Hymn of Love.

Abstract:
Abstract It is not uncommon to read the Moomin tales through existentialist lenses. Although there might be natural reasons for focusing on and privileging the nine classical Moomin books, it would, however, be a mistake to overlook Jansson’s comic strips. This is so, not only because of the quality of Jansson’s drawings and because of the way she innovatively worked with and developed that graphic medium, but certainly also because of the stories they contain. When read alongside the books, the comic strips add important aspects and nuances to Jansson’s portrayal of human existence. By allowing herself the freedom to radically change the setting and scenery of the stories, Jansson was able to explore quite different topics than was possible in the novels, and in particular to offer a somewhat different account of the role of customs, normality and tradition.

Abstract:
Consider the complete graph on n vertices, with edge weights drawn independently from the exponential distribution with unit mean. Janson showed that the typical distance between two vertices scales as log n/n, whereas the diameter (maximum distance between any two vertices) scales as 3 log n/n. Bollobás, Gamarnik, Riordan and Sudakov showed that, for any fixed k, the weight of the Steiner tree connecting k typical vertices scales as (k − 1)log n/n, which recovers Janson's result for k = 2. We extend this to show that the worst case k-Steiner tree, over all choices of k vertices, has weight scaling as (2k − 1)log n/n and finally, we generalize this result to Steiner trees with a mixture of typical and worst case vertices.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article, Professor Steve Hedley offers a Common Law response to he recently published arguments of Professor Nils Jansen on the German law of unjustified enrichment (as to which, see Jansen, “Farewell to Unjustified Enrichment” (2016) 20 EdinLR 123). The author takes the view that Jansen's paper provided a welcome opportunity to reconsider not merely what unjust enrichment can logically be, but what it is for. He argues that unjust enrichment talk contributes little of value, and that the supposedly logical process of stating it at a high level of abstraction, and then seeking to deduce the law from that abstraction, merely distracts lawyers from the equities of the cases they consider.

Abstract:
An experimental test bench is proposed in order to analyze the trajectory shape described by the termination of the Jansen’s type of leg mechanism during a walking sequence. A prototype of a walking robot based upon Jansen walking mechanism is constructed for this purpose. A marker is placed at the end of the leg and a CCD camera recorded the trajectory shape described by the leg driven by a DC motor through a crank. The results are interpreted with the help of a program based on image processing created for determining the length and the height of the step during walking after studying the trajectory.

Abstract:
Interest in the colour of fruits eaten by vertebrates has a long history (Ridley 1930, Turcek 1963, van der Pijl 1972). Within a given geographical area, colours of bird-consumed fruits compared with mammal-consumed fruits are fairly consistent (Janson 1983, Wheelwright & Janson 1985, Willson & Whelan 1990), but comparisons among different regions reveal selective pressures of different animal groups (Lord 2002, Willson et al. 1989). One consistent pattern among regions is that fruits with a two-colour display typically are eaten by birds (Wheelwright & Janson 1985, Willson & Thompson 1982, Willson & Whelan 1990). Thus, it is thought that such bicoloured displays are specifically adapted to attract birds and plants with these displays presumably benefit from seed dispersal by birds (Janson 1983, Willson & Whelan 1990).

Not long ago, I came across Tore Janson's A Natural History of Latin: The story of the world's most successful language (2004) – and I thought: ‘That's an odd claim.’ Then four things came to mind: the Roman Empire, which lasted for centuries; the Roman Catholic church, which has lasted longer; Latin as Europe's international language, and the Romance language family (‘Latin’ under other names). In the later twentieth century, the teaching of Latin itself fell on hard times, which for me – a teacher of the language some decades ago – is a matter of regret. It was a pleasure therefore to encounter Janson's book, which (mirabile dictu) came out first in Swedish then in English.

Abstract:
It is now well established that there are several species in the group of rough periwinkles inhabiting European rocky shores. The usual consensus agrees on four, namely Littorina saxatilis (Olivi), Littorina arcana Ellis, Littorina nigrolineata Gray and Littorina neglecta Bean. The first two species are particularly difficult to distinguish in the field and have received much attention. Recent work indicates that the ovoviviparous L.saxatilis is a very variable species living in a wide range of habitats (e.g. Janson, 1985) and that, although it is close to the oviparous L. arcana in shell morphology and in genotype, the two are separate species (Ward & Warwick, 1980; Ward & Janson, 1985), and not reproductive morphs of the same species.
