Abstract:
This dissertation examines the rising medicalization of depression in Japan and asks how it has become possible that Japanese, who reportedly barely suffered from depression until recently, are now increasingly becoming "depressed." Drawing upon two years of fieldwork in psychiatric institutions in the Tokyo environs, I examine this change from three different angles---historical, clinical, and socio-legal. First, my historical analysis questions the assumption held by Japanese psychiatrists that depression did not exist in premodern Japan; I show that traditional Japanese medicine did indeed

Abstract:
The thesis examines the role of the Japanese police during the American Occupation of Japan (1945-52), highlighting the problems that attended reform of this key institution. It contends that there was tension between the commitment to democratise the police on the one hand and the decision to engage in an indirect Occupation on the other. Emphasis on the ambivalence of US policy, mirrored by divisions within GHQ, SCAP, helps to explain the discrepancy between the professed aims of police reform and its actual results. Parallels are drawn between the prewar/wartime police and its postwar count

Japan is enigmatic for migration scholars. The country will lose a quarter of its population in 40 years with the elderly ratio climbing to nearly 40%, remaining one of the most aging economies. It seems no grand design for the future generation is shared by policymakers or citizens: how should the country open up a practical prospect under this hard reality? The present discourse-centered study examines how Japanese people currently in their sixties construct, in and through discourse, their memories of the indigenous historical era called Showa (1926-1989). These contemporaries are particularly called Showa hitoketa ("Showa single digit") since they were born between 1926 and 1934, or during the first nine years (i.e., single-digit years) of the era. As Showa has been often referred to as the "turbulent era" mainly because of its dramatic transformations caused by the nation's defeat in World War II, the generation of Showa hitoketa also has been

This handbook brings together twenty-one leading experts to provide comprehensive and up-to-date analyses of civil society in Japan. This public trust, consistently highlighted by media portraying the JSDF as heroes, stems from their ardent commitment to humanitarian operations in disaster-prone Japan. The JSDF's mobilization during the COVID-19 pandemic, under disaster relief orders, exemplified this, with personnel assisting in quarantine, medical support on a cruise ship, and operating la

In the past few decades, Raman scattering has gained attention as a spectroscopic technique for the study of chemical and biological sensing, as it is a label-free non-invasive method.[1] However, the main drawback of Raman spectroscopy is the intrinsically low signal intensity, which leads to unsuitably high detection limits. Hence, the exploitation of plasmonics for enhancing Raman signal has become an important factor for the routine application of this technique. Silicon wafers and glass slides are two of the most common substrates used for the growth of SERS active layers.[2] However, the

Although Japan is much richer than Latin America and income distribution in Japan generally is much more equitable than in Latin America, the Japanese gender gap is one of the worst in the world, much worse than that of many Latin American countries. The most probable explanation seems to be that women are often kept away from the mainstream system of Japan Incorporated, mainly due to career interruption for marriage and/or childbearing. Possibl
