When a disaster strikes, nonprofit organizations face the need to mobilize resources as quickly as possible in a limited time frame. Given its characteristics to instantly spread information to masses of people, social media is considered one of the most effective ways for nonprofits to publicize opportunities to take voluntary actions. Despite the envisioned use, little has been examined about the effectiveness of social media in encouraging people to give. This chapter takes the case of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear threat that struck Japan in 2011 to examine whether the use of social media was effective in nonprofit fundraising. Analyzing data collected in an original online survey, the authors find that the use of social media both before and after the disaster has a positive impact on the amount of donations that nonprofits raise. Use of social media during non-disaster times is the key for successful fundraising in times of disaster.

This chapter discusses how to adapt online learning to teach Japanese language courses. The author overviews the current language education situation in Japan, introducing the existing online Japanese courses and examine their content. Online learning is convenient because learners can learn at any time or place. However, learning Japanese online has a problem, namely a complicated typing system. The author details how typing in Japanese can be an obstruction to learning online. She also discusses the merits of typing exercises. Their previous research shows that learning Japanese characters at an early stage of learning can improve the students’ listening ability. The author introduces hiragana and katakana software which can enhance the learning of characters. Finally, she describes a system to monitor the students’ progress and involvement and how to incorporate online learning with face-toface instruction.

Rephotography is a varied set of practices that begin with taking one or more pictures of the same subject. Valued for generating conversations in-situ about a place over time, recent large-scale migration to online learning draws attention to rephotography’s virtual modes. From examples that use online location software (e.g., Google Street View) to those in video game worlds, virtual rephotography might present convenient windows to unreachable destinations. However, rephotographing without having visited actual vantage points needs to take into account complexity and disjointedness introduced by such tools. Drawing from the author’s current practice-led research into photomedia, visual literacy and temporality in Northeastern Japan, emergent particularities are discussed for developing visual literacy through a necessary application of Google Street View.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides a background of transnational marriage agencies, which emerged within a very specific historical and geographical context. Transnational marriage agencies specializing in introducing Chinese women to Japanese men first appeared as a significant phenomenon in Japan in the 1990s. Some marriage brokers were professionals for whom the brokerage business was a full-time job. Others were amateurs, often themselves part of a Japanese–Chinese couple. Many of these marriage agencies had an online presence. Indeed, numerous male clientele had found their way to a marriage agency via the Internet. This book offers an ethnographic study of the making of cross-border marriage. Understanding contemporary practices of crossing borders between Japan and northeast China for the sake of marriage entails exploring and theorizing the following: (1) marriage and the construction of marriageability; (2) the influence of the local; (3) the politics of similarity, proximity, and familiarity; and (4) the implicit ideologies pertaining to marriage itself.

Abstract:
Home/self-quarantines have never been applied in such broad territorial range (across the globe, in real time; in mega-cities) or with such large numbers of people as during the COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 outbreak (Nov. 2019 – present). As data started coming in about the viral outbreak, government leaders and public health officials instituted mass-scale quarantines: first, the quarantine of Wuhan, the megacity of 11 million at the epicenter of the outbreak, then the People's Republic of China, then a cruise ship, then cities in South Korea, then Japan, then Italy, and elsewhere. There have been rolling quarantines across particular regions as extended diagnostics capabilities came online. In this time, macro, meso, and micro-scale quarantines have been instituted and have mostly held. On social media, many under self-quarantine in their homes (“sheltering in place”) have shared messaging and social imagery about their experiences. This work studies social image sharing on social media platforms as a digital service in a time of global emergency four months into the outbreak.

Abstract:
The data mining activities studied in this chapter concern the early identification of potential high-value customers. Member stores can use this information to establish a close relationship with this select group of customers, thus reducing the chances of losing them. Traditionally, Japanese drugstore chains, unlike their American counterparts, have enjoyed close ties with their customers. For example, cash register clerks at Pharma stores may have substantial interactions with customers using online market research questionnaire forms. By closely monitoring the purchasing behavior of relatively new visitors to the store and applying data mining tools to pertinent data, the company can provide decision support to clerks and to the marketing department to aid in relationship building. For instance, sales campaign information, customized coupons, and free samples can be directly mailed to members of the targeted group or given to them at the checkout counter.

Abstract:
This chapter examines practical issues regarding Virtual Exchanges (VEs) for educational purposes in the university context and covers language use, cultural differences, time management, teacher collaboration, technology-related issues, assessment, and context specific factors. It charts the establishment of three academic collaborations between a university in Kyoto, Japan, and institutions in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The first collaboration follows a new hybrid model created at the Japanese university described here. In the Teaching Online Together (TOT) model, teachers in the Philippines interact with students in a tutorial style system to improve the students’ English presentation skills via video conferencing. The second project, with a university in Kenya, is modelled on the intercultural telecollaboration or Cultura-type exchange approach (O’Dowd, 2018). Students from the respective institutions work together asynchronously to complete tasks related to the development of intercultural understanding and sensitivity. The third collaboration, with a university in Belgium, follows a shared syllabus approach (O’Dowd, 2018) in which teachers create course materials for students who then work together both synchronously and asynchronously to achieve their goals.

Abstract:
Although Extensive Reading (ER) has been shown to increase reading fluency and comprehension, such benefits are generally slow to appear. The present study investigated the possible contribution of ER to single-semester Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) reading gains. The participants were 497 first-year students from two annual cohorts at a tertiary institution in Japan. All took a preliminary TOEIC before enrolling in the online ER system Xreading, which awarded them a word count for successfully completing a short quiz on each book they read for homework. Hierarchical linear regression analyses of end-of-semester ER words read and TOEIC reading scores showed a consistent positive relationship between the two. However, semester increases in the former were not reflected by proportional gains in the latter, a finding possibly explained by greater consistency in ER’s implementation across course sections over time. In short, ER words read might in fact be a proxy for general compliance in homework completion rather than a direct cause of TOEIC reading score improvement.

Abstract:
This chapter is targeted at families raising bilingual and bicultural children in the Japanese school system. In it, I will discuss how one bicultural family approached fitting into Japanese school and society while still developing the minority-language mother’s culture and language. Since one family’s experience could be attributed to unique circumstances, to provide additional insights and perspectives eight other expatriate parents were interviewed either face-to-face (four parents) or via an online survey (four parents) to highlight some of the common strategies and experiences they used over time. For this study, the minority language is English as the international families all have an English first-language (L1) speaker or a bilingual (Japanese/English) parent. Each child in this paper has been educated primarily in Japanese public elementary, and public and private junior high and high schools. However, depending on the circumstance, some families have also chosen to embrace education outside the Japanese system. For some, this was a few weeks or months during elementary school, and for others it was for university or study abroad. For all the families who participated in my research for this chapter, education included an organized social and educational support group for raising bilingual children outside of school. Specifically, this chapter will explore the following: (1) how expatriate parents supported their own culture; (2) the importance of support from other families raising bilingual English/Japanese children while living in Japan; (3) what parts of these families’ experiences can enrich the lives of other bicultural families; and (4) how families can balance Japanese school clubs (bukatsu), supplementary education, school, and finances to support a family while still maintaining a minority language and culture.
