The increasing demand for sustainable architecture has led to a growing interest in wood structures. Hence, ensuring their structural stability and strength performance is an imperative. This study investigated the nail bearing strength and withdrawal resistance of mixed cross-laminated timber (CLT) using Japanese larch and yellow poplar layers. The mixed CLT was composed of three larch laminas (major) and two yellow poplar laminas (minor). The bearing strength of the mixed CLT decreased as the ratio of the thickness of the minor lamina to nail depth increased. The nail withdrawal resistance differed in the penetration and axial directions of the laminas. In the direction perpendicular to the grain, the withdrawal resistance load of the yellow poplar lamina was measured to be 1.45-times that of the larch lamina. The withdrawal resistance of the mixed CLT with the yellow poplar layer was 17% higher than that with larch. Therefore, the length of the nail used for the mixed CLT should be selected based on the thickness of the minor lamina to achieve efficient bearing and withdrawal resistance of the nail connection.

Abstract:
This study aimed to rapidly and accurately identify geographical origin, tree species, and model wood density using visible and near infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometric methods. A total of 280 samples with two origins (Jilin and Heilongjiang province, China), and three species, Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.), Japanese elm (Ulmus davidiana Planch. var. japonica Nakai), and Chinese white poplar (Populus tomentosa carriere), were collected for classification and prediction analysis. The spectral data were de-noised using lifting wavelet transform (LWT) and linear and nonlinear models were built from the de-noised spectra using partial least squares (PLS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)-support vector machine (SVM) methods, respectively. The response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze the best combined parameters of PSO-SVM. The PSO-SVM model was employed for discrimination of origin and species. The identification accuracy for tree species using wavelet coefficients were better than models developed using raw spectra, and the accuracy of geographical origin and species was greater than 98% for the prediction dataset. The prediction accuracy of density using wavelet coefficients was better than that of constructed spectra. The PSO-SVM models optimized by RSM obtained the best results with coefficients of determination of the calibration set of 0.953, 0.974, 0.959, and 0.837 for Dahurian larch, Japanese elm, Chinese white poplar (Jilin), and Chinese white poplar (Heilongjiang), respectively. The results showed the feasibility of Vis-NIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometric methods for determining wood property and geographical origin with simple, rapid, and non-destructive advantages.

Abstract:
Nonhost resistance is hypothesized to protect plants in a nonspecific manner. For highly specialized parasites, this hypothesis applies not only to distantly related plants but also to resistant congeners of the host species. Congeners of Populus spp. were hybridized to create two interspecific hybrid poplar pedigrees (i.e., Populus trichocarpa × P. deltoides and P. trichocarpa × P. maximowiczii). The pedigrees were planted in a randomized, replicated “common garden” on Vancouver Island so that they were exposed to parasites of the native P. trichocarpa. Monogenic and oligogenic resistance to two ascomycetous, parasitic fungi (i.e., Venturia inopina and a Taphrina sp.) segregated in a parasite-specific manner in each pedigree. However, these resistance genes were not inherited from the native host, P. trichocarpa. Instead, resistance was inherited from the allopatric, nonhost congeners, P. deltoides (eastern cottonwood) and P. maximowiczii (Japanese poplar). Thus, we found that major genes condition parasite-specific, nonhost resistance, as has been true in earlier studies of this kind with additional parasites of Populus spp. The selective force responsible for evolutionary maintenance of such genes is unknown.

Abstract:
Abstract The presence of fibrillar structures (FS) in the cell corner middle lamella (CCML) regions was demonstrated in several species of plants. The FS in the CCML of bass wood, oak wood, and bamboo became clearly visible after removal of lignin by wood decay fungi. The occurrence of FS in the CCML was also confirmed by examining early stages of cell wall formation in silver poplar, Japanese red pine, Arabidopsis and alfalfa. The fibrillar texture became increasingly less defined with the onset of lignification as the interfibrillar spaces were masked by lignin polymers and the fibrillar network became embedded within the lignin matrix. The FS stained positively with PATAg and ruthenium red, which is interpreted to be an indicator of the presence of structural polysaccharides (non-cellulosics and pectins). Our work demonstrated that fibrillar network is a characteristic feature of CCML of plant cell walls that is clearly visible prior to lignification of this cell wall region, but becomes invisible after the deposition of lignin.

Abstract:
We examined the changes in leaf anatomy and some physiological characteristics during leaf expansion and maturation. Three deciduous tree species having different types of shoot phenology, maple (Acer mono Maxim.; ‘flush’ type), alder (Alnus japonica(Thunb.) Steud.; ‘successive’ type), and Japanese poplar (Populus maximowiczii A. Henry; ‘successive’ type), were studied. Leaf CO 2 assimilation rate at high irradiance (P max) and CO 2 transfer conductance inside the leaf (g i) varied significantly with leaf development. There were strong positive relationships between P max) and g i for all of the species. The variations in g i were partly related to those in the surface area of chloroplasts facing the intercellular airspaces, while some other factors that related to liquid phase conductance may also contribute to the variation in g i . The developments of mesophyll cells were accompanied by the concomitant increase in chloroplast and Rubisco content in Alnus and Populus (successive types).

Abstract The article focuses on the representation of wartime Japan as a home (and home country) by analysing contemporary popular songs. Within this frame I show examples of how the Japanese state managed to influence the Japanese people through propaganda songs in order to gain the people’s moral support for the war effort. My essay aims further at drawing a picture of Japan’s musical world from the latter half of the 1930s to the end of World War II, as a detailed consideration of popular music and its surroundings always allows us to interpret much more than expected at first view. In addition, I consider the mass media as a supporter of Japan’s ideological aims. The history of radio and record companies is firmly interwoven with the efforts of the Japanese state to manipulate people during the war years. The contribution from artists must also be considered an important part of this mosaic.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of the conducted evaluation of the health condition and seed yield of the dendrological species in Academic Park in Belgrade. Both scores for each individual tree and average scores for all trees within each plant genus under observation were analyzed. The health condition of 126 trees belonging 19 genera was examined while the seed yield was assessed for the total of 132 trees. The best as-is health and physiological condition was observed in the following species: nettle trees, honey locusts, pagoda trees, cedars and individual ginkgo and tulip poplar trees. Horse chestnuts, Eastern black walnuts and birch trees proved less resilient to biotic and abiotic damages. Japanese pagoda trees had the best seed yield. There were no significant differences in fruit-bearing between the two years of research, although there were different scores at the individual level. Of all deciduous species recorded, which were prevailing, about 60% had very good seed yield in both years of monitoring, while some 20% of trees bore no fruits. Coniferous trees had higher fruit-bearing score in 2015 (47.4%) than in 2016 (43.0%), whereas about 10% of all conifers bore no fruit at all.

This thesis deals with the business plan to establish plantations of fast-growing poplar on agricultural land for the production of energy. The target is to create and analyze a business plan for the production of fast-growing trees in the region Vysočina. Theoretical part deals with general information of fast-growing trees, energy conception of the Czech Republic and of course also instructions for writing a quality business plan. The practical part contains an extended version of the business plan for the establishment of plantations of fast-growing poplar, strategic analysis, economic aspects and evaluation of the whole project. In this thesis are also suggestions to improve the project.

The thesis is focused on analyzing and evaluation of importance and potential of fast-growing woody species for specifics of Czech economy and local conditions. Thesis will inquire into applicability of each fast-growing species for Czech natural conditions. Further I will investigate opportunities of subvention from public authorities. Next part of thesis will be focused on all activities and processes during cultivation of fast-growing species from acquiring land to processing of wooden mass. For each activity will quantify costs of labor and physical capital during cultivation of fast-growing woody species for different subjects in Czech economy, like household owning a soil or company with unused outside areas. Thesis will be comparing possible energetic savings of profits for a number of alternatives with different energy prices development in ongoing years. Practical output of this thesis should not be only the compilation of all these information into one text, but above all also a complex formula which everyone can use for the calculation of his opportunities for cultivating of fast-growing woody species.

Abstract:

Japanese presence on the global cultural market has steadily been increasing throughout the last decades. Fan-communities all over the world are celebrating the Japanese culture and cultural identity no longer seems bound to the local. This thesis is an empirical study which aims to examine the transnational flow of Japanese popular culture into Sweden. The author addresses the issue with three research questions; what unique dimensions could be ascribed to Swedish anime-fandom, what is appealing about Japanese popular culture and how is it influencing fan-audiences? To enable deeper understanding of the phenomenon, a qualitative research consisting of semi-structured telephone-interviews and questionnaires, was conducted with Swedish fans of Japanese popular culture. The results presented in this thesis indicate that the anime-community in Sweden possesses several unique dimensions, both in activities surrounding Japanese popular culture and consumption and habits. Japanese popular culture fills a void that seems to exist in domestic culture. It is different, and that is what is appealing to most fans. Anime and manga have inspired fans to learn about the Japanese culture, in some cases, Japanese popular culture has in a way “japanized” fans – making them wish they were born in Japan.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which English is used to produce and reproduce new meanings and identities in the Japanese context. The study of language contact with English in Japan is far from new in Japanese sociolinguistics, and a number of studies have been conducted in this area. However, I argue that previous studies are marked by two main oversights: firstly, previous studies were conducted on data collected from limited genres; secondly, in the previous studies, English was examined on the basis of a restricted contact setting. Thus, the earlier studies provided a limited view of the ways in which the use of English functions in the Japanese context, overlooking the variety of the ways in which new meanings and identities are created. This study provides a more comprehensive picture of the ways in which the use of English functions performatively within the Japanese setting. It does this by conducting three case studies on data collected from three largely overlooked genres of Japanese popular culture, namely Japanese rap, manga, and a Japanese online Bulletin Board System website (BBS). Drawing on the theoretical framework based on the concepts of globalisation and performativity (Pennycook, 2007), this study focuses on the dynamic process by which English is embedded and re-embedded in local contexts within Japanese popular culture. Accordingly, it highlights the ways in which the use of English performatively creates and recreates new meanings and identities. This thesis argues that the process in which English is embedded is multidimensional within the Japanese context, and that this process corresponds to the ways in which English is performative in constructing multidimensional identities. Furthermore, viewing the use of language as a 'transmodal performance' (Pennycook, 2007), this study examines how the use of English works performatively in parallel with other modes of performative act, such as singing and drawing pictures.

Abstract:
Nishikawa Sukenobu was a popular artist working in Kyoto in the first half of the eighteenth century. He was principally known as the author of popular 'ehon', or illustrated books. Between 1710 and 1722, he published some fifty erotic works, including a work detailing sexual mores at court which Baba Bunkô, amongst others, believed responsible for prompting the ban on erotica that came with the Kyôhô reform package of 1722. Thereafter, he produced works generally categorized as 'fûzoku ehon': versions of canonical texts, poems and riddles, executed in a contemporary idiom. This thesis focusses on the corpus of illustrated books from the early erotica of the 1710s to the posthumously published work of 1752. It contends that these works were political: that Sukenobu used first the medium of the erotic, then the image-text format of the children's book to articulate anti-bakufu and pro-imperialist sentiment. It explores allusions to the contemporary political landscape by reading the works against Edo and Kyoto 'machibure', contemporary diaries (such as 'Getsudô kenbunshû') and contemporary pamphlets ('rakusho'). It also places the ehon in the context of other contemporary literary production: for example the anti-Confucianist writings of the popular Shinto preacher Masuho Zankô and the 'ukiyozôshi' production of Ejima Kiseki (whose works were illustrated by Sukenobu). It corroborates these findings by citing evidence of the political sympathies of Sukenobu's collaborators: for example, the political writings of the Kyoto educationalist Nakamura Sankinshi; the works of the children's author and Confucian scholar Nakamura Rankin (aka Mizumoto Shinzô); and the fictional and 'kojitsu' writings of the Shinto scholar Tada Nanrei.

Abstract:
This thesis is an art historical study focussing on contemporary Japan, and in particular the artists Murakami TakashL Mori Mariko, Aida Makoto, and Nara Yoshitomo. These artists represent a generation of artists born in the 1960s who use popular culture to their own ends. From the seminal exhibition 'Tokyo Pop' at Hiratsuka Museum of Art in 1996 which included all four artists, to Murakami's group exhibition 'Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture' which opened in April 2005, central to my research is an exploration of contemporary art's engagement with the pervasiveness of cuteness in Japanese culture. Including key secondary material, which recognises cuteness as not merely something trivial but involving power play and gender role issues, this thesis undertakes an interdisciplinary analysis of cuteness in contemporary Japanese popular culture, and examines howcontemporary Japanese artists have responded, providing original research through interviews with Aida Makoto, Mori Mariko and Murakami Takashi. Themes examined include the deconstruction of the high and low in contemporary art; sh6jo (girl) culture and cuteness; the relation of cuteness and the erotic; the transformation of cuteness into the grotesque; cuteness and nostalgia; and virtual cuteness in Japanese science fiction animation, and computer games.

Japan's low-interest rates made the country's currency the primary funding currency in carry trade speculative strategies. Investors' activity in carry trade strategies has an enormous impact on the foreign exchange market volatility. A large inflow of capital to countries with higher interest rates contributes to their currency appreciation, and, in turn, a large outflow of capital from countries with a low-interest rate leads to a significant depreciation of their currency. However, in times of crisis and high uncertainty in the financial markets, investors massively withdraw from the carry trade. They sell financial assets purchased in a country with higher interest rates and then repay loans taken in a country with low-interest rates. A sudden increase in the supply of a country's currency with higher interest rates leads to its depreciation. On the other hand, the rise in demand for a country's currency with low-interest rates leads to its appreciation. The Japanese yen is one of the most popular funding currency in the carry trade and thus tends to appreciate during crisis periods. The paper aims to investigate the relationship between Japanese yen value and financial market uncertainty measured by the Volatility Index VIX and St. Louis FED Financial Stress Index. Based on the component generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model CGARCH with asymmetric threshold term, it has been shown that the increase in financial markets uncertainty contributes to significant appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar. It implies that the Japanese currency is an example of a safe-haven currency and can be applied to hedge financial stress for global equity investors.

Abstract:
Japanese animation or anime is one of the most popular and well-received types of Japanese popular cultures, translated into various languages, rendering these globally renowned. A plethora of studies has shown that interest in anime has led students to start learning the Japanese language. However, to date, studies examining the influence of anime consumption on Japanese language students, particularly in Malaysian contexts, are scarce. The present study aims to identify the effect of anime consumption on Malaysian undergraduates who enrolled in beginner Japanese language courses at three public universities in Malaysia. A total of 150 undergraduate students who are interested in anime participated in this study. The data was collected using an online survey and was coded and categorized by themes. The data revealed that most students are influenced by the characters, settings, and storylines of anime. The main positive effects are; broadening their knowledge on Japan and its culture, deepening their interest on Japanese language, strengthening relationships with family members and friends, releasing stress, instilling positive moral values and enhancing imagination and creativity. However, poor time management, negative moral values, negative emotion, antisocial behavior, escapism and buying characters’ goods are mentioned as the main adverse effects. The results of this study gave insightful perspectives to those working in Japanese language and cultural pedagogies.

This paper presents the results of initial fieldwork on Online dating (netto-jô konkatsu, koikatsu) and other types of internet-based partner matching options in Japan, focusing on the possibilities for textual and interactional self-representation on different sites and apps available to single Japanese. This includes widespread international apps like Tinder and Grindr, along with local apps like 9 Monsters, a popular gay app that also incorporates light gaming functions, or Zexy En-Musubi, a revolutionarily egalitarian site aimed at heterosexual singles specifically seeking marriage. I approach this question by looking at the different technological affordances for profile creation using these services, and the ways users engage with those affordances to create profiles and to search for partners, based on examinations of websites, apps, and public profiles; interviews with website producers; and ethnographic interviews with past and current users of Online dating services. I primarily argue that self-presentation in Japanese Online dating hinges on the use of polite speech forms towards unknown readers, which have the power to flatten out gendered speech differences that are characteristic of language ideologies in Japan (Nakamura 2007). However, dominant cultural ideas about gender, sexuality, and marriage—such as patriarchal marriage structures—may still be “baked into” the structure of apps (Dalton and Dales 2016). Studying Online dating in Japan is critical because of its growing social acceptance. While in 2008 the only “respectable” site was a Japanese version of Match.com, in 2018 there are numerous sites and apps created by local companies for local sensibilities. Where Online dating was already established, in the West, there was little sociological study of it while it was becoming popular, in part because research on the internet also lacked respectability. By looking at Japan, where acceptance is growing but Online dating has not yet been normalized, we can gain a deeper understanding of its gender, sexuality, romance, and marriage practices. Japan’s experiences can also potentially provide a model for understanding how Online dating practices might develop elsewhere. In the US, Online dating faced many of the stigmas that it continues to face in Japan—such as that it was “sleazy,” “sketchy,” or desperate. In spite of these stigmas, however, Online dating grew slowly until it suddenly exploded (Orr 2004). Will it explode in Japan? By looking at how people use these sites, this paper also hopes to shed light on the uptake of Online partner matching practices.

The operation term of Japanese nuclear power plants is less than 13 months. Moreover, the refuel outage period is longer than the other countries. It is likely that excessive preventive maintenances result in early “infant mortality” failures (early failures). However, the statistical evaluation report about failure type of Japanese nuclear power plants was not found. Therefore, Evaluation of plant engineering performance was tried on open data/information with a statistical method. The Weibull distribution/analysis, which needs not only failure data but also censored data like the preventive maintenance, was applied to plant performance evaluation. As open data/information, an annual report; “Operational Status of Nuclear Facilities in Japan” is very popular for the operation database of Japanese nuclear power plants. However, maintenance date/information of failed equipment which caused plant shutdowns were not reported in this annual report. Therefore, every equipment was assumed to be maintained during every shutdown, because this assumption generally makes conservative results of failure rate and Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) for discussion about early failures. Data till March 2007 were collected from these annual reports. As a result of plant performance evaluation, failure type was early “infant mortality” failure type. Excessive maintenances probably resulted in early failure type. Moreover, influence of early failures and effects of plant design modifications were evaluated. Almost 30% of failures occurred within one month after restart, and failure type excluded these failures was chance (random) type. Early failures within one month may be closely evaluated to improve maintenances. Design modification effect of Japanese nuclear power plants was confirmed.

In Japan, the cute aesthetic is abused by many organizations and for many purposes including police mascots, and warning signs for dangerous areas. Although using cute to motivate and inform might seem strange, cute does offer potential. Dr. Cheok and his team at the National University of Singapore argued that Japanese ‘kawaii’ embodies a special kind of cute design, which reduces fear and makes dreary information more acceptable and appealing. Various Japanese kawaii characters such as Hello Kitty and Pokemon have become popular all over the world. However, since few studies have focused on kawaii attributes, we systematically analyze the kawaii interfaces themselves: kawaii feelings caused by such attributes as shapes, colors, and materials. Our aim is to clarify a method for constructing a kawaii interface from the research results. Kawaii might be one important kansei value for future interactive systems and industrial products of Asian industries. We previously performed experiments and obtained interesting tendencies about such kawaii attributes as shapes, colors, and sizes. Although questionnaires are the most common form of kansei evaluation, they suffer from such demerits as linguistic ambiguity, the possibility of mixing the intensions of experimenters and/or participants into the results, and interruption of the system’s stream of information input/output. Thus, to compensate for these demerits, we examined the possibility with biological signals. In this article, these experiments and their results are outlined.

Seto Inland Sea which has undergone serious environmental degradation and anthropogenic changes. In order to recover and sustain its unparalleled values, rebuilding a sound environmental policy system from top to bottom is highly required. The ecosystem services and their monetary values are also estimated buy CVM necessary for sustainability assessment, due to their powerful roles in representing human-coastal zone relationship and supporting sustainability of a “Satoumi” system. The sustainability assessment framework for Seto Inland Sea, which consists of Inclusive Wealth, “Satoumi”, and ecosystem service approach was developed.

Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing are the two most popular and successful programs espoused by the industries over the last few decades. Many companies such as Toyota, Danaher Corporation, General Electric, Motorola and many others have achieved impressive results by implementing either a Lean or Six Sigma methodology in their organisation. Six Sigma, originated in Motorola in mid 1980s, brought revolution in the industries worldwide and has become the long term business strategy to achieve competitive advantage and to excel in operations excellence. Six Sigma is widely recognized as a methodology that employs statistical and non-statistical tools and techniques to maximize an organization’s Return on Investment (ROI) through the elimination of defects in processes (Antony et al. 2011). Lean Manufacturing, on the other hand, was another quality initiative proposed by Americans in response to compete with Japanese manufacturers and its superior manufacturing techniques (following the concept of Toyota Production System (TPS) to resolve quality problems in their organization) as their import became serious concern to western producers.
