Full textRoad transports stand for a great part of Sweden’s total CO2-emissions. Transports are expected to increase over the coming years, and with those the emissions. A greater environmental awareness leads to increased demands for environmentally friendly transport. The aim of this thesis is to study the consequences of changing transportation modes from road to railway. The thesis contains three major parts; a literature study, a case study and analysis with the national freight system Samgods.
The literature study intends to give the reader an insight in the potentials as well the obstacles of the railway. Environmental aspects are discussed as well as political views, both positive and negative. Socioeconomic and more company specific incentives that would lead to more transfers from road to railway are presented and discussed.
A case study including two companies, Swep and KappAhl, both with relations which transfer potentials they wish to be examined. Differences in costs for today’s truck transportation are calculated and compared to train transportations. The Swedish national freight system, Samgods, is used to examine the distance relationships between closest terminals and final destinations and how intermodal solutions would be designed and the economic consequences thereof. The environmental impacts are calculated for each relation for both companies to present the saving that can be made if the transportation mode is changed, and also to show the companies their environmental impact today at a specific relation.
The result of this thesis is that KappAhl would make a great saving when it comes to the CO2-emissions. If they are willing to increase transportation costs with 4.5 % they could reduce their CO2-emissions with 95 % by using the railway instead of only road transportations. For Swep, the comparison between today’s transportation costs and a future cost for railway transport could not be implemented due to non suitable transportation solutions in Samgods. The environmental impact, however, was calculated for today’s transportations and a future railway solution. The result was a great saving for each of the calculated emission types. The analysis made with Samgods showed that freight transported with container is less sensitive to the distance to nearest terminal than freight transported without container. Furthermore, according to Samgods it is cost-effective to transport freight with combined transport if the distance to the final destination is more than 4.6 times the distance to the nearest terminal. The corresponding value for transports without container is 6.9 times. The relationship between nearest terminal and final destination is applicable for distances from 60 km to 300 km from the final destination.

Gustav Kährs AB is a company that is considering a change of transportation from trucks to railroad. Kährs headquarter is situated in Nybro. The company makes wooden floors and stores them in their central warehouse in Kalmar. Today all transports from the warehouse are carried out by trucks; the goods are then transported to the harbor in Helsingborg and then shipped to Bremen. Kährs is considering switching to railroad transportation between Kalmar and Helsingborg.
The problem has been formulated as follows:
“Is it worth to switch transportation method from tuck to railroad considering the following aspects: the environment, lead times, costs and investments?”
To gain a deeper insight of the consequences that a switch would have on lead times, costs, investments and the environment we have chosen to conduct a case study. The purpose of this case study is not to reach a definitive answer to the problem but rather to give an open discussion on the subject. This fits our formulated problem fine, because the question if it is worth or not is a subjective matter.
This thesis has been built around a model that consists of all the different aspects that have been mentioned within the formulated problem. From this model we have derived a calculation model to calculate if it is worth to make a switch from tucks to railroad from a cost perspective. From the calculation model we have further derived different scenarios were today’s situation is compared to alternative means of transportation involving railroad. The different scenarios include different harbors and investments like cranes, forklifts and extension of railroad.
The calculation model focuses on the costs being generated by each scenario. The result of the analysis is that today’s truck solution had the most advantages compared to the other scenarios. But what final solution is chosen depends on what characteristics Kährs values. If the environment is an important factor, if Kährs feels that it is important to position itself as an environmental friendly company then the railroad would be an interesting alternative. The question is if Kährs is prepared to deal with the increased costs that this alternative generates. Perhaps the company doesn’t feel that the savings on the environmental side are reason enough to stand the extra costs.
The answer to our formulated problem is that we don’t consider it worth shifting from tuck to railroad. But in the end it is all about what characteristics Kährs consider to be important.

Full textWeeds are growing along the Swedish railway network. In order for them to not cause problems they are being removed chemically with the herbicide glyphosate. Due to problems such as a risk for an increase in weeds that are tolerant to glyphosate alternative methods for weed control are now being considered. This report compared pelargonic acid, hot water, hot water steam and electricity as control methods in terms of efficacy, cost, energy and water consumption. Glyphosate was used as a reference. The comparison was made by reviewing available research articles. The usability of the control methods was then analysed by estimating the use of resources necessary to implement each method for three different scenarios. Whether the choice between a ballasted or fixed rail was affected or not by the cost for weed control was also investigated. The results showed that the alternative weed control methods required more energy and water than glyphosate. They also provide less effective weed control which means repeated treatments are necessary during the growing season. This, combined with a low application speed, makes the weed control expensive and time consuming. To be able to say to what extent each control method is possible to implement guidelines are needed for tolerated cost, effectiveness, energy- and water consumption. The result suggests that it is possible to introduce alternative control methods to a certain extent. However, in order to replace glyphosate along the entire main line, the methods all need to be developed, especially in terms of effectiveness. For hot water and steam treatment there is also a need for a decrease in water consumption. The cost for weed control accounted for less than 5 % of the total cost for maintenance on a new ballasted railway. The rise in cost due to alternative weed management resulted in the fixed track becoming profitable up to two years earlier with the alternative management compared to glyphosate. The choice between a ballasted and fixed track was not considered to be significantly affected by this. However, factors were identified that could make the cost of weed control higher than this report showed. Therefore, when alternative methods are introduced, one should consider the cost for weed control on the ballasted track when making the choice between the two types of tracks.

Full textThe train traffic in Sweden has increased significantly the last couple of decades, thus resulting in an increased number of departures, which has made it harder to obtain train paths. Furthermore, the Swedish railway system is already outdated, and the maintenance work neglected. As all parties using the infrastructure also aspire to offer their customers the highest possible quality and aim to fulfill their needs, it has become more challenging to balance the stakeholders needs, anticipation and demands. For the railway companies, an increased demand mean that they need to obtain more rail paths in order to meet their customers need to transport goods and people. However, this entails an increased need for maintenance operations in the system in order to ensure the function of the infrastructure and thus reduce the number of traffic disruptions. Because of financial and geographical constraints, most of the Swedish railway consists of single-track, thus the railway companies and the maintenance activities are competing about same paths. This makes it more challenging during the capacity allocation process, the process in which the timetables are finalized. In order to maintain the safety and punctuality in the infrastructure, it is important to study the need for capacity. Thus, this study intends to answer the question: How shall the capacity requirement be managed from a maintenance perspective on a single-track railway trafficked by cargo- and passenger trains? In order to answer this question, an explorative case study was conducted at the Swedish Transport Administration, more specifically track 119, the single-track railway between Boden and Luleå. In order to do an assessment of the current situation, literature review, observations and interviews with employees and consultants at the Swedish Transport Administration, railway companies and entrepreneurs. During this process, the fact that the maintenance entrepreneur do not get the time in the tracks that was promised in the contractual agreement emerged, thus making it hard for them to maintain the function of the infrastructure. A long side of this, the total number of errors has increased significantly the last couple of years, but the total number of remarks during safety inspections has decreased. However, the total number of remarks during maintenance inspections has increased, which indicates that the system’s health is not good. Furthermore, the robustness in the system is low, which means that potential faults may result in more traffic disruptions. Despite this, the railway companies express that they in the next couple of years will need more capacity, thus either intend to claim more times in the tracks or extend the length of their trains. In order to meet the capacity requirements of the future, while being able to maintain the function of the infrastructure, it is crucial from a maintenance perspective, to increase the preventative maintenance while reducing the number of faults in the system. Furthermore, in order to execute this in a purposeful and cost-effective manner, the maintenance activities must be coordinated as much as possible, which requires longer maintenance-windows. In order to obtain the optimal length of these windows and to know which works to combine, it is possible to use a model for preventive maintenance scheduling problem (PMSP). By doing this, it is possible to optimize the maintenance and reach capacity increasing result without rebuilding the infrastructure.
