Abstract:
Across the Theravada Buddhist countries of Southeast Asia, theVessantara Jatakahas long been the most famous of the stories (jatakas) of the previous lives of the Buddha. However, little attention has been paid to the jataka's historical vicissitudes. Drawing on comparisons with neighbouring Thailand, this essay suggests there have been significant differences in the jataka's performances and interpretations in Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia and Laos. This essay seeks to historicise understandings of theVessantara Jataka, showing how social movements, state policies and global pressures have shaped understandings of the jataka differently in each country.

Abstract:
Archeological and literary sources attest that the “Jataka Stories” were subject to temple paintings from the second century onwards. The Vessanthara Jataka has featured prominently among temple painting in several eras of Sri Lankan history. Vessanthara jataka is a famous jataka story which is highlighted among other jataka stories in Buddhist shrines. The specialty given to the Vessanthara jataka in the paintings of Kandy era is particularly noticeable. This feature can be clearly observed in the temples which were built between 1750 and 1900. Some of these temples, located in the up country were patronized by royals like King Kirthi Sri Raja Singha. Other temples in the low country were built with the patronage of the rising middle class. Even with many fluctuating political and social issues, it seems the prominence given to the depiction of the Vessantara jataka was stable and unshakable. Giving priority to the Vessanthara jataka seems to have been a process carried out by a group of patrons, monks, artists and general public patrons who may have expected to achieve their political and social targets through the depiction of the vessanthara jatakaya. Buddhist monks have also attempted to convey the message of Buddhism through the depiction of Vessanthara jatakaya. Artists may have been interested in depiction of the “Vessanthara jataka” story because it was an opportunity to display their talent and attract others. It seems that the general public was also attracted to the Vessanthara jatakaya because of the characters of that jataka story and its sensitive and emotional scenes. The paper will examine the allocation of space to the Vessanthara jataka and its tactful visual techniques.

Abstract:
This paper explores the therapeutic potential within the past life stories of Ananda from the Buddhist sutra Jataka, applying the literary therapy theories and methods of the Society of Korean Literary Therapy.Literary therapeutics regards humans as literary beings, and its main task is to reflect on and adjust the story-in-depth inherent in life through the story-in-depth inherent in works. Using Ananda's narratives as a reflective tool, this study aims to examine the mindsets and behaviors that modern individuals should adopt when pursuing religious practices and the path of sainthood. In the Jataka, Ananda, alongside Devadatta, emerges as the second most frequently depicted character after Buddha. Often depicted as someone living a worldly life, Ananda symbolizes the juncture between the paths of Buddha and Devadatta. Many stories vividly portray his journey, showcasing a qualitative transformation from worldly entanglements to becoming an authentic companion of the Buddha. This process offers profound insights for contemporary individuals ensnared by greed and ignorance, illustrating how to break free, undergo existential transformation, and progress towards enlightenment.
Through a narrative analysis of various Jataka materials, this study identifies six conditions contributing to Ananda's transition from a worldly existence to a saintly one. Firstly, an open-minded approach to truth, embracing immediate acceptance devoid of prejudice. Secondly, the willingness to let go without remorse, embracing bold changes in direction. Thirdly, embodying humility, sincere honesty, and selflessness in actions. Fourthly, the capacity for cool-headed discernment and practical problem-solving. Fifthly, unwavering faith and resilience during crises. Sixthly, fostering a humanity of respect and engaging in practical acts of compassion. These aspects interconnect rather than stand alone, portraying a human existence passionately lived not only through thoughts but also actions. Ananda's portrayal in the Jataka stories can be seen as a literary representation of the ideal Buddhist figure, serving as inspiration for Buddhism followers.
Ananda's portrayal in the Jataka stories can be seen as a literary representation of the ideal Buddhist figure, serving as inspiration for Buddhism followers. The findings of this analysis hold significance in the realm of Buddhist counseling. Ananda's narrative provides rich material for healing conversations between counselors and clients, each characteristic of Ananda offering potential as a therapeutic focus. Employing 'story-making,' a hallmark technique in literary therapy, where clients reconstruct Ananda stories and reflect upon them, could introduce a novel approach to Buddhist counseling. Moreover, incorporating Ananda stories into established Buddhist counseling methods, such as ascetic meditation healing, could diversify and enhance the counseling experience. Leveraging various literary works, including folk tales, could serve as a valuable avenue to enrich Buddhist counseling methodologies.

Abstract:
Indian classical stories may be told simply, yet their ideas are profound. It helps to shape our society to validate cultural assumptions and beliefs. As the stories have a strong influence on the conceptual frameworks of the community, they can also alter the human understanding of the natural world. But in recent years, humans have distanced themselves from nature. The anthology of Panchatantra (Sanskrit language) and Jataka tales (Pali language) is offered in this study as a valuable discourse for developing ecological consciousness among the people which is suitable for both children and adult literature. Academic circles in India have adopted the environmental approach to literary works, which is an active field on the international stage. “Today, Eco Sophy is a large and multidisciplinary field of study that creates a broad spiritually-specific theory of the natural and social conditions of humans on Earth and in space”. Some writers have studied the representation of ecology in ancient and modern literature. Nevertheless, to the best of this applicant's knowledge, there has been no comparative research on the development of ecological consciousness in Panchatantra and Jataka stories.

Abstract:
Religion
Ph.D.
This study brings excerpts from the Acts of Thomas (Act 1.11-16 and Act 3.30-33) together with two Buddhist jātakas (Udaya Jātaka - #458 and Visavanta Jātaka -#69) to consider how stories might have been transmitted in the early centuries of the common era in a milieu of mercantile exchange on the Indian Ocean. The Acts of Thomas is a 3rd century CE Syriac Christian text concerned with the apostle Thomas proselytizing in India. The jātakas are popular didactic narratives with a pronounced oral dimension that purport to be accounts of the Buddha’s previous lives. Syriac Christians possessed knowledge about Indian religious practices linked to renunciation, and it is plausible that they adapted Buddhist jātakas to convey Christian ideas in the account of Thomas journeying to India and converting people there. Epigraphic evidence from the western Deccan in India attests to yavana, or Greek, patronage of Buddhist institutions in cosmopolitan settings where ideas and commodities circulated. Against the grain in scholarship on early Christianity that tends to privilege Latin and Greek sources, this project moves the lens of analysis eastward to consider Indian influence on early Christianity as expressed in the Acts of Thomas. A literary comparison of the texts under consideration with reference to the historical and cultural context of exchange reveals similar models of renunciant practices in Buddhism and Christianity that establishes new grounds for consideration of interconnectivity across ‘East’ and ‘West.’
Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Abstract What happened to the Buddha-to-be between his vow at Dipankara Buddha’s feet and his birth in his final existence? The intervening period is said to have lasted a vast number of lifetimes, and many of these lifetimes are recounted in the form of “jataka” or past-life stories, a genre hugely popular in Buddhism. In particular, there are two tensions in understandings of the jataka genre: first, between the idea that the stories demonstrate the long path to buddhahood, and the fact that many stories exhibit far more worldly concerns; and second, between the stories’ role in building up a community around the Buddha and their role in emphasizing the necessity of the Buddha eventually transcending all ties. These tensions offer creative opportunities for storytellers and audiences, going some way toward explaining the enduring presence of the genre.
