Abstract:
The Hindu social organization is remarkable for its Varnasrama Dharm or duty based on other and stages of life. This broad division was originally associated with the color conscious Aryans to distinguish them from the non-Aryans. The Purusha-sukta hymn( ), refers to the emergence of the four —fold social order from the four limbs, of the creator. The hymn is in the last book of the Rig-Veda, suggesting its late origin "This tradition of creation is accepted and even propounded by Manu( ), who refers to the assignment of different duties and occupation to different social groups". A caste is ‘a collection of families or groups of families, bearing a common name which usually denotes or is associated with a mythical ancestor, human or divine; professing to follow the same calling; and regarded by those who are competent to give an opinion as forming a single homogeneous community”. According to Dr.V.A. Smith, a caste may be defined as “a group of families internally united by peculiar rules for the observance of ceremonial purity, especially in the mater of diet and marriage”. Manu mentions the term "Jati" meaning caste. Originally these two terms had no doubt different connotations, but in later times they were considered as synonymous. The term varna meaning color was used to distinguish the Aryans from the non-Aryans. Later on, it stood for all the four groups. Brahmans, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, and Sudras, representing the four fold division of Hindu society. The other term jati connotes, according to the legal texts, not only the four castes or groups but also numerous new castes, created to accommodate the off-springs of inter-caste marriages. These castes became more or less water-tight compartments, with qualities, work and rights and obligations peculiar to each. For various castes, separate set of rules of conduct were framed. In course of time the various groups of people were accommodated in different stages of material and spiritual development into a composite pluralistic society. The (Jatis) or castes enjoyed considerable freedom in formulating the details such as marriage, food, communion etc. of their social life.

Abstract:
In late nineteenth century Malayalee society, the project of social reforming was caught up in the concern to evolve an alternative to established Jati-based mode of ordering human beings. The criticism by the missionaries of the CMS, LMS and the Basel Mission of the established order in Malayalee society as entirely unnatural and inimical to (universal) human values was heard right through the nineteenth century. At the turn of the century, the nascent modern educated of Tiruvitamkoor, Kochi and Malabar were beginning to echo such viewpoints actively. The terms on which these groups perceived their identities and assessed local society were more or less set by colonial sociology and the codification efforts by both imperial and local powers. Interpreting locally existing jati in terms of the construction of ‘caste’ (i.e., ‘Nair’, ‘Ezhava’, ‘Araya’ etc.) these groups sought to form organisations for the reform of caste, to transform these into full-fledged modern communities.

Abstract:
The crowded marketplace in Thiruvananthapuram (aka Trivandrum) thronged with people in the late nineteenth century. Men and women clad in white mundu teemed about the busy street buying oil and salt, horseshoes and iron farm implements, coarse cloth, coir rope, jaggery, and palm toddy. The men were mostly bare-chested, though some, unmindful of the sweltering heat, wore white long shirts or an upper-body cloth. While a few young women wore printed blouses, many, particularly the older women, wore no upper-body clothes except for large, beaded necklaces made of red-colored stones. Most people, with the exception of the men who clothed their upper body, walked along the sides of the road, leaving the path clear for the occasional bullock cart. These bullock carts, also known as villuvandi, carried young men-about-town, almost exclusively landowning, upper-caste Nairs. Dressed in a spotless white shirt, white mundu, and matching white turban, the Nair riding his villuvandi assumed the haughty air of a master surveying his subjects; out to observe his inferiors as much as be seen as a superior. These Nairs, and other upper-caste men and women, had the exclusive right of way, on bullock cart or on foot, the right to wear clean white clothes, and, of course, the right to ride a villuvandi. These rights were codified through caste-based rules or norms known as jati maryada, which governed all aspects of social behavior.

Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to investigate the historical trajectory of Ashrafia hegemony in Sindh, the province of Pakistan. I begin with the analysis of biopolitics of caste, class and religion organised around Hindu–Muslim binarism and unity as it unfolded during and after the partition of the Indian subcontinent. I particularly analyse the demographic shifts, the official categorisation of populations, and the communal and ethnonationalist claims that led to the specific kind of interpretation of religion, caste and class. Informed by the Ambedkarian subaltern perspective and based on the analysis of ethnographic data and vernacular literature, I explain that nationalist ideologies framed in the narratives of political Islam and Sufism tend to organise politics around Hindu–Muslim otherness, as in case of Pakistani nationalism, and Hindu–Muslim harmony, as in case of Sindhi nationalism. Based on that understanding, I argue that Ashrafia advantage, by and large, is the product of pre-existing historical hegemonic relations than any conscious strategy, and or directly imposed domination. Since both the Ashrafia narratives primarily imagine people through religious binaries, they lack the counter-hegemonic elements that could confront casteism that lies at the intersection of class and religion. None of the narratives, being performative projections of the ideal religious society, brought casteism in their focus while dealing with the structural inequalities, social hierarchies and the issues of political representation of the Dalit class. It resulted in the unwarranted legitimacy for Ashrafia hegemony, Jati Hindu domination and Dalit subordination. This re-hierarchised caste groups and continue to (re)distribute the caste capital by (re)producing Sayedism, Dalit exclusion and caste-class oligarchies.

Abstract:
Obituaries on the demise of caste politics in India have already been read. It is argued that religious identity has trumped caste as a tool of political mobilization. Underlining that changing terms of political discourse represents a major break from the past; this article finds the coexistence of ‘casteless’ politics and the ascendancy of dominant castes in electoral politics perplexing. The article argues that politics in India is going ‘beyond’ caste but not without caste. The article offers ‘post-caste politics’ as a prism through which emerging political situation could be studied.

Abstract:
Debate over the Hindu and Muslim religious identity, as well as the natureof the two communities’ interaction, has generated different answers. Tosome, it has been an interaction full of conflict and conflict-resolutionbetween two irreconcilable faiths. To others, it remains impossible to reconstructtheir history as one of convergence or divergence, due to the considerablevariation in their cultures and religions over time. Khan addresses thequestion from a different perspective. According to her, “the Hindus or theMuslims whom the question addresses are not real characters” (p. 4): Thereligious identity of the “Self” is not completely distinct from that of the“Other” in medieval India. Thus, the sporadic clashes between Hindus andMuslims have been due mainly to political reasons and occasionally to economicfactors, but definitely never to religious differences.Khan’s book dwells on the making of identity in the Indian subcontinentbetween medieval India and the end of the twentieth century. It seeks toexplore the spiritual encounters between the indigenous Hindu traditionsand Islam, their historical harmonious coexistence, and their presentpredicaments, with special reference to the intermediary position of NizariIsmailism, a Shi`i sect. Based on field research, observation, and personalexperience, the author demonstrates with vivid case studies, legends, andfolklore how the two peoples had formerly lived by shared deities and howthe change of identity based on Hindu nationalism and Islam has wroughthavoc. The book is broadly divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 examinessome important terminologies that underpin religio-cultural identities inIndian history. In ancient and medieval India, people were distinguished bysocio-religious strata, first by the varna system (socio-ritual categories) andlater by the jati panth (caste and sect) system. A similar thing applied toIndian Muslims, who were hierarchically categorized as Ashrafs (referringto nobles, foreign Muslims) and Ajlafs (referring to converts), but not simplyas “Muslims.”The interface between the indigenous Hindu religion and Islam goesbeyond the terminological resemblance and reaches the heart of religious ritualsand ideologies. In chapter 2, the author cites three modes of interaction ...

Abstract:
In the 2009 and 2014 elections, the poorer the voters were, the less BJP-oriented they were too. The situation changed in 2019, when the prime minister appeared to be equally popular among all the strata of society, including the poor. Modi’s massive appeal to the poor is counterintuitive given the weakening of pro-poor policies like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the elitist character of BJP. If class has lost some of its relevance for explaining the results of the 2019 elections, caste is showing some resilience, not as aggregates in the garb of OBCs or SCs, but as jatis at the state level. In spite of the BJP’s claim that the party’s ideology was alien to any consideration which may divide the nation, its strategists have meticulously studied caste equations at the local level in order to select the right candidates. This caste-based strategy partly explains the above-mentioned class element as the small OBC and Dalit jatis that the BJP has wooed are often among the poorest—and upper caste poor vote more for BJP than their co-ethnic rich anyway.

Abstract:
Lava Jato investigation revealed a scheme of bribes involving many businesspersons and public officials that benefited from fraudulent contracts for years, supported by public policies focused on infrastructure investment. This study analyses whether corruption was the driving force behind the success of the private construction companies investigated or not and how the revelation of these corrupt acts is taking the benefits away. Firms liquidity and debt structure before the revelation of the case as well as their strong positioning in the sector suggest that even for an economic downturn their financial positions would probably be enough to pass through a crisis caused by external factors. Much of the financial robustness before the investigations may have come from the corrupt acts itself but subsequent reputational damage deteriorated the companies’ ability to acquire debt and to negotiate new contracts, making them more susceptible to the economic downturn and penalizations applied by justice.

The main purpose of this case study is to qualify the tourist’s leisure experience. The objects of study are the visitors to Taitung Country Li-Jai Lin Dao rural community. There are 5 main purposes: 1. Analysis of the leisure resource features of Li-Jai Lin Dao. 2. Understanding the type of leisure experience of Li-Jai Lin Dao. 3. To qualify the differences of the tourist’s images and leisure experiences according to differences of background. 4. To study the relationship between the tourist’s images and their experiences. 5. This case study, hopefully, will be helpful to the government or other organizations or parties who interested in the study of this issue. This case study is carried out using document study, in depth communication and questionnaires to understand the types of resource features and experience activities of Li-Jai Lin Dao and to study the leisure experience of the tourists. The result found that differences of personal backgrounds result in differences in tourism image. It is quite obvious the differences in background cause the differences of leisure experience. According to the results of this case study, we would like to offer some suggestions. Firstly, improving marketing by using the “5 strategies” to set up a model from this model we can develop the experience orientation of the tourist. We can also use the 5 steps to plan activities to better satisfy tourist demand. The environment of the whole community could be improved regarding traffic control devices and also variety of accommodations for the tourist. We suggest the organization of a service foam to provide guiding and interpretation services. Also, more information regarding available activities should be offered to the tourist. This case study is not perfect but can act as a starting point for further study to aid government in the development of tourism resources.

Abstract:
Indian society is highly stratified and hierarchical. Caste, class, and gender all contribute to an individual’s status. A large body of literature explores the importance of each of these. This chapter examines the relationship between caste and gender inequality in three states in India. When households are grouped using conventional, government-defined categories of caste, we find patterns that are consistent with existing literature: lower-caste women are more likely to participate in the labour market, have greater decision making autonomy within their households, and experience greater freedom of movement. When households are grouped by the narrower sub-caste categories of jati, where caste is lived and experienced, we find the relationships are far more varied and nuanced. These results suggest that focusing on broad caste categories such as ‘scheduled castes’ and ‘scheduled tribes’ can be misleading for understanding the relationship between caste and gender.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the complex issue of caste and its relationship to modern Hinduism. It starts by drawing up a broad canvas of classical theories about caste from sociology and anthropology, considering caste in relation to the Sanskritic concepts of varna and jati. The authors then move on to the emergence of caste in its modern form in the colonial period and post-colonial period. The chapter’s discussion of the emergence of a modern conception of caste in the colonial period converges with what has been discussed concerning the ‘invention’ or ‘standardization’ of Hinduism. The chapter also discusses caste in relation to post-colonial politics, and to work and occupation, tracing the transformation of caste in the face of contemporary socio-economic and political change. Hence the chapter also considers the relationship of caste with Modern Hinduism and Hindu society with reference to law and the state, Dalit politics, affirmative action, violence, and the economy.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with the simulation of a lubricated contact in severe running conditions considering the fluid as Non-Newtonian of Maxwell type. To overcome some limitations that become apparent at very small film thickness, notably when the roughness is two-dimensional, Jai in 1995 introduced a new technique based on a rigorous homogenization theory in the case of compressible fluid flow. This procedure was mathematically developed by Jai [1] and Buscaglia and Jai [2], and applied to tribological problems by Jai and Bou-Sai¨d [3]. The theoretical developments have been presented and discussed elsewhere [6] of this work and we present here some numerical results obtained from the homogenized technique. The obtained results were discussed and compared with the direct methods of calculation, and seem to us valid for a definitive validation of this method said about homogenization. These results have been compared to the exact solution obtained from a numerical simulation. By direct inspection it is clear that the symmetry predicted by the homogenization method is not present in the exact solution which qualitatively agrees with the homogenized solution.

Abstract:
This study is an attempt to reduce the effect of the leakage vortex in axial flow turbines. A 3D Navier-Stokes CFD solver with k-ε turbulence modeling was used compute the flow through an axial flow turbine with modified blade tip designs. A baseline flat tip case and three modified tip cases were simulated and the leakage flow and vortex for each was analyzed in detail. The three modified blade tip designs each involved adding a chamfer to the tip of the blade, in an attempt to diffuse the leakage flow through the gap and obstruct the leakage flow with the outer casing’s shear layer. Chamfering of the blade tip near the leading edge of the gap and across the entire gap region both failed to reduce the size and strength of the leakage vortex. By chamfering the blade tip near the trailing edge of the gap, the leakage flow inside the gap was turned toward the direction of the blade’s camber. This turning resulted in a decrease in the size and the strength of the leakage vortex and its subsequent losses, while at the same time, did not reduce the blade loading by an appreciable amount. Abstract:
A pressure-correction based, 3D Navier-Stokes CFD code was used to simulate the effects of turbine parameters on the tip leakage flow and vortex in a linear turbine cascade to understand the detailed flow physics. A baseline case simulation of a cascade was first conducted in order to validate the numerical procedure with experimental measurements. The effects of realistic tip clearance spacing, inlet conditions, and relative endwall motion were then sequentially simulated, while maintaining previously modified parameters. With each additional simulation, a detailed comparison of the leakage flow’s direction, pressure gradient, and mass flow, as well as the leakage vortex and its roll-up, size, losses, location, and interaction with other flow features, was conducted. Part II of this two-part paper series focuses on the effect of relative motion of the outer casing on the leakage flow and vortex development. Casing relative motion resulted in less mass flow through the gap and a smaller leakage vortex. The structure of the aerothermal losses in the passage changed dramatically when the outer casing motion was incorporated, but the total losses in the passage remained very similar. Additional secondary flows that were seen near the casing are also discussed. Reduced tip clearance resulted in less mass flow through the gap, a smaller leakage vortex, and less aerothermal losses in both the gap and the vortex. The shearing of the leakage jet and passage flow to which leakage vortex roll-up is usually attributed to was not observed in any of the simulations. Alternative explanations of the leakage vortex’s roll-up are presented. Additional secondary flows that were seen near the casing were also discussed.
