Abstract:
The stresses, strains, and deformations produced by repeated, two-dimensional rolling-sliding contact are analyzed using a modified finite element model developed by Bhargava et al. [1]. Rolling and sliding are simulated by translating an appropriate set of normal and tangential surface tractions across an elastic-perfectly plastic half space. The study examines a peak-pressure-to-shear strength ratio of po/k = 4.5 and normal to tangential force ratios of T/N = 0.20 and T/N = 0.17. The calculations describe the residual stresses, displacements and the continuing cyclic radial, shear and equivalent strains generated at various depths in the rim. The results are compared with previous calculations by Johnson and Jefferis [2] of rolling-sliding contact and with pure rolling. The present work predicts much higher deformations than previously calculated.

Abstract:
AbstractAmongst some orientalist of Qur’anic studies, Arthur Jeffery was one of the controversial figures for the idea of a critical edition of the Qur’an. For Jeffery, the Qur’an existed today is unreasonable and its arrangement is clearly haphazard. One of his critical argument is surah al-Fatihah which indicated not originally part of the Qur’an. His work “the variant readings of the Fatihah” showed some peculiar nature of al-Fatiha with the evidence of two Fatihah different versions. Jeffery’s variants study is a polemical argument as its contradicts to the Muslim scholar arguments. For Muslim scholars, al-Fatihah is an integrated part of Qur’an. Therefore, this article will analyze Jeffery’s argument on al-Fatihah through a descriptive-analytic method. Based on historical, language, and qira’ah study, Jeffery’s argument is incorrect. In addition, Jeffery failed to show the existence of his evidence of variant of al-Fatihah.Keywords: Critic; Controversy; Fatiha; Muslim; the Qur’an AbstrakDiantara sekian banyak para orientalis pengkaji al-Qur’an, Arthur Jeffery merupakan salah satu sosok yang paling kontroversial dengan gagasannya untuk membuat al-Qur’an edisi kritis. Kata Kunci: al-Fatihah; al-Qur’an; Kontroversi; Kritik; Muslim

Abstract:
Western scholars, often called, the orientalists somehow develope their Islam and or Quranic study based on their own methodology regardless the metholology achieved by muslim scholars. One of them was Arthur Jeffery. He explained his findings on Quranic codification made by muslim generation at that time had disconsidered variant readings of Quran. But Uthman proclaimed Jeffery Unified that variants by burning other codice and material belong to the prophet champanion. In the name of Ibnu Masud he found, actually such variants became indication of unautheticity of Uthman codice. Following the way of Jeffery thought, of course, muslim understanding on the Quranic autheticity will be disrupted. The muslim however mostly will confuse whether the naration on Usthman codice valid or not. The naration made by Jeffery on what he called as Ibnu Masud codice however will distructed the established understanding. In countering so, Mustofa al-Azmi came with bright explaination that the Quranic study belongs to Jeffery lack of muslim tradition i.e. strong transmission of Hadith. Mustofa al-Azmi sharply responded Jeffery by explaining three issues. Firstly, he told the weakness methodology of Jeffery on the different arrangement of surah belong to Ibnu Masud codice. Secondly, He refuted Jeffery’s misleading in the omitting three surah in codice belonged to Ibnu Masud. The third, the correction to Jeffery’s claim that he found difference or variant reading of Ibnu Masud codice from our codice that referred to Uthman codice. The way Mustofa Al Azmy refuse Jeffery it is the critical aparatus or textual apparatus of Mustofa al-Azmi.

We have developed several detector systems for use in observational astronomy. These include a rapid scanning spectrometer (Jeffers and Weller, 1973), a rapid chopping spectrophotometer (Stiff and Jeffers, 1978) and an intensified, silicon vidicon detector for use either for spectrophotometry (Jeffers, Stiff and Weller, 1983) or direct imaging (Jeffers, 1982). These detector systems have been used for rapid variability studies of emission line strengths and profiles in Wolf-Rayet and Of stars (Weller and Jeffers, 1979; Jeffers, Stiff and Weller, 1985) and for low dispersion spectrophotometry of these stars (Jeffers and Weller, 1985). Here we report on the spectrophotometric performance of the intensified, silicon vidicon detector (RCA 4804H) when used with a low dispersion spectrograph.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of primary school educators regarding emotional problems in children, as well as their perceived role therein. In order to reach these aims, a qualitative exploratory research design was used, and focus group interviews were conducted with primary school educators from three urban schools in Gauteng, South Africa. The focus group interviews were transcribed verbatim, and the transcripts were analysed through thematic content analysis. Themes regarding educators' perceptions include extemalised and internalised behaviours, changes in children's usual behaviour, the impact on school work, and physical or behavioural signs. In addition, the following themes emerged regarding the perceived role of educators in relation to emotional problems in children: educators identify emotional problems in children and love and support those children, they play an active role in the lives of children, and educators utilise resources to assist them with interventions. Participants in this study show insight into emotional problems in children, and are in need of extra support and resources from helping professionals such as counsellors, psychologists and social workers in order to intervene more effectively with children suffering from emotional difficulties.

Abstract:
This study, the first of its kind in twenty years, provides both a biographical and a critical approach to robinson jeffers and examines, within a strictly chronological sequence, the permanent interactions between the writer's life and his work. Using many unpublished documents, it surveys the main events in jeffers' life and gathers them into three periods: the first is devoted to the early vagabond years extending from his birth in pennsylvania, through switzerland and california, to the final settlement in carmel and the publication of the long poem "tamar". The second corresponds to the years of maturity, characterized by the building of tor house, the sedentary family life there, and the writing of his major works. It ends, in the late 1930's, with the appearance of a matrimonial crisis culminating with una jeffers' attempted suicide. The third opens with worl war ii and the beginnings of the poet's slow decline due as much to the trauma of the war, as to illness, una's death and the growing lack of inspiration. As for the poems, they are thoroughly examined from various points of view: how they were written, how published, and how they affected the poet's reputation through the critical reactions they entailed. We can thus follow the intensification, then the progressive decline of his literary fame. Some of jeffers' poetical and philosophical themes are investigated, starting from a textual analysis of the poems: mainly his conception of death and its relation to artistic creation, his mystical and esthetic vision of nature, and the tragic function of fate. To conclude, the emphasis is shifted to jeffers' characters as tropes, used by the poet to symbolize human destiny and mortality, as well as to present pain as man's only possible salvation

Abstract:
Quayshawn Spencer clarifies that his defense of biological racial realism in Chapter 3—which is called “OMB race theory”—is meant to be a part of a larger radically pluralist theory about the nature and reality of race in American English. Next, Spencer defends OMB race theory against the South Asian mismatch objection from Glasgow and Jeffers. Third, Spencer raises an empirical adequacy objection against Glasgow’s, Haslanger’s, and Jeffers’s race theories insofar as they are unable to predict how race and races are talked about in multiple national discussions, such as whether Rachel Dolezal is wrong to claim a Black racial identity and whether Harvard University has been unlawfully discriminating against Asian applicants in undergraduate admissions.

Abstract:
This paper compares results from the the rod-chain model with those from results based on Jeffery’s equation. A concept of critical buckle aspect ratio is employed to define the rigidity or flexibility of a fiber, above which point a fiber is flexible enough to be bent and twisted. When a fiber has an aspect ratio less than the critical buckle aspect ratio, fiber motion predicted by the rod-chain model corresponds perfectly with that of Jeffery’s equation. The trajectories of a single rigid fiber with different initial orientations are shown by the rod-chain model, which are in line with what Jeffery’s equation predicts. Results are also shown for the configuration of a single flexible fiber at various times under a pure shearing flow. The “blind area” of the rod-chain model is discussed.

In ASME 2011 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2011-64498.

Abstract:
This paper studies the rheological properties of a semi-dilute fiber suspension for short fiber reinforced composite materials processing. For industrial applications, the volume fraction of short fibers could be large for semi-dilute and concentrated fiber suspensions. Therefore, fiber-fiber interactions consisting of hydrodynamic interactions and direct mechanical contacts could affect fiber orientations and thus the rate of fiber alignment in the manufacturing processing. In this paper, we study the semi-dilute fiber suspensions, i.e. the gap between fibers becomes closer, and hydrodynamic interactions becomes stronger, but the physical/mechanical contacts are still rare. We develop a three-dimensional finite element approach for simulating the motions of multiple fibers in low-Reynolds-number flows typical of polymer melt flow. We extend our earlier single fiber model to consider hydrodynamic interactions between fibers. This approach computes the hydrodynamic forces and torques on fibers by solving governing equations of motion in fluid. The hydrodynamic forces and torques result from two scenarios: gross fluid motion and hydrodynamic interactions from other fibers. Our approach seeks fibers’ velocities that zero the hydrodynamic torques and forces acting on the fibers by the surrounding fluid. Fiber motions are then computed using a Runge-Kutta approach to update fiber positions and orientations as a function of time. This method is quite general and allows for solving multiple fiber suspensions in complex fluids. Examples with fibers having various starting positions and orientations are considered and compared with Jeffery’s single fiber solution (1922). Meanwhile, we study the effect of the presence of a bounded wall on fiber motions, which is ignored in Jeffery’s original work. The possible reasons why fiber motions observed in experiments align slower than those predicted by Jeffery’s theory are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
This paper presents a numerical approach for calculating the single fiber motion in a viscous flow. This approach addresses such issues as the role of axis ratio and fiber shape on the dynamics of a single fiber, which was not addressed in Jeffery’s original work. We develop a Finite Element Method (FEM) for modeling the dynamics of a single rigid fiber suspended in a moving fluid. Low Reynolds number viscous flows are considered since these best represent the flow conditions for a polymer melt within a mold cavity. Our approach seeks the fiber angular velocities that zero the hydrodynamic torques acting on the fiber using the Newton-Raphson method. Fiber motion is then computed with a Runge-Kutta method to update the position, i.e. the angle of the fiber as a function of time. This method is quite general and allows for fiber shapes that include, but are not limited to, ellipsoidal fibers (such as that studied in Jeffery’s original work), cylindrical fibers and beads-chain fibers. The relationships between equivalent axis ratios and geometrical axis ratios for cylindrical and beads-chain fibers are derived in this paper.
