Abstract:
The stresses, strains, and deformations produced by repeated, two-dimensional rolling-sliding contact are analyzed using a modified finite element model developed by Bhargava et al. [1]. Rolling and sliding are simulated by translating an appropriate set of normal and tangential surface tractions across an elastic-perfectly plastic half space. The study examines a peak-pressure-to-shear strength ratio of po/k = 4.5 and normal to tangential force ratios of T/N = 0.20 and T/N = 0.17. The calculations describe the residual stresses, displacements and the continuing cyclic radial, shear and equivalent strains generated at various depths in the rim. The results are compared with previous calculations by Johnson and Jefferis [2] of rolling-sliding contact and with pure rolling. The present work predicts much higher deformations than previously calculated.

Abstract:
AbstractAmongst some orientalist of Qur’anic studies, Arthur Jeffery was one of the controversial figures for the idea of a critical edition of the Qur’an. For Jeffery, the Qur’an existed today is unreasonable and its arrangement is clearly haphazard. One of his critical argument is surah al-Fatihah which indicated not originally part of the Qur’an. His work “the variant readings of the Fatihah” showed some peculiar nature of al-Fatiha with the evidence of two Fatihah different versions. Jeffery’s variants study is a polemical argument as its contradicts to the Muslim scholar arguments. For Muslim scholars, al-Fatihah is an integrated part of Qur’an. Therefore, this article will analyze Jeffery’s argument on al-Fatihah through a descriptive-analytic method. Based on historical, language, and qira’ah study, Jeffery’s argument is incorrect. In addition, Jeffery failed to show the existence of his evidence of variant of al-Fatihah.Keywords: Critic; Controversy; Fatiha; Muslim; the Qur’an AbstrakDiantara sekian banyak para orientalis pengkaji al-Qur’an, Arthur Jeffery merupakan salah satu sosok yang paling kontroversial dengan gagasannya untuk membuat al-Qur’an edisi kritis. Kata Kunci: al-Fatihah; al-Qur’an; Kontroversi; Kritik; Muslim

Abstract:
Western scholars, often called, the orientalists somehow develope their Islam and or Quranic study based on their own methodology regardless the metholology achieved by muslim scholars. One of them was Arthur Jeffery. He explained his findings on Quranic codification made by muslim generation at that time had disconsidered variant readings of Quran. But Uthman proclaimed Jeffery Unified that variants by burning other codice and material belong to the prophet champanion. In the name of Ibnu Masud he found, actually such variants became indication of unautheticity of Uthman codice. Following the way of Jeffery thought, of course, muslim understanding on the Quranic autheticity will be disrupted. The muslim however mostly will confuse whether the naration on Usthman codice valid or not. The naration made by Jeffery on what he called as Ibnu Masud codice however will distructed the established understanding. In countering so, Mustofa al-Azmi came with bright explaination that the Quranic study belongs to Jeffery lack of muslim tradition i.e. strong transmission of Hadith. Mustofa al-Azmi sharply responded Jeffery by explaining three issues. Firstly, he told the weakness methodology of Jeffery on the different arrangement of surah belong to Ibnu Masud codice. Secondly, He refuted Jeffery’s misleading in the omitting three surah in codice belonged to Ibnu Masud. The third, the correction to Jeffery’s claim that he found difference or variant reading of Ibnu Masud codice from our codice that referred to Uthman codice. The way Mustofa Al Azmy refuse Jeffery it is the critical aparatus or textual apparatus of Mustofa al-Azmi.

Abstract:
We have developed several detector systems for use in observational astronomy. These include a rapid scanning spectrometer (Jeffers and Weller, 1973), a rapid chopping spectrophotometer (Stiff and Jeffers, 1978) and an intensified, silicon vidicon detector for use either for spectrophotometry (Jeffers, Stiff and Weller, 1983) or direct imaging (Jeffers, 1982). These detector systems have been used for rapid variability studies of emission line strengths and profiles in Wolf-Rayet and Of stars (Weller and Jeffers, 1979; Jeffers, Stiff and Weller, 1985) and for low dispersion spectrophotometry of these stars (Jeffers and Weller, 1985). Here we report on the spectrophotometric performance of the intensified, silicon vidicon detector (RCA 4804H) when used with a low dispersion spectrograph.

Abstract:
The orientations of fibres in a semi-dilute, index-of-refraction-matched suspension in a Newtonian fluid were observed in a cylindrical Couette device. Even at the highest concentration (nL3 = 45), the particles rotated around the vorticity axis, spending most of their time nearly aligned in the flow direction as they would do in a Jeffery orbit. The measured orbit-constant distributions were quite different from the dilute orbit-constant distributions measured by Anczurowski & Mason (1967b) and were described well by an anisotropic, weak rotary diffusion. The measured ϕ-distributions were found to be similar to Jeffery's solution. Here, ϕ is the meridian angle in the flow-gradient plane. The shear viscosities measured by Bibbo (1987) compared well with the values predicted by Shaqfeh & Fredrickson's theory (1990) using moments of the orientation distribution measured here.

Abstract:
This article comprises the annual Birthday Lecture of the Richard Jefferies Society as it was delivered in October, 2004. The text sketches the economic, social and environmental history of Jefferies' period (the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s), drawing inter alia on his works and referring especially to his home district in north-east Wiltshire. It alludes, firstly, to the fortunes and environmental effects of both intensive and ‘tumbledown’ arable farming. Second, it describes the creation of sporting estates and the letting of sporting rights as swift responses by some landowners to falling cereal prices. Third, the text points to under-investment in education and non-agricultural activities as hampering adjustment to the depression, and shows that Jefferies was a free trader who grasped that rapid and extensive food importation and labour emigration would have been a proper response. A related paper, Eric L. Jones, ‘Richard Jefferies’ Writing Criticised and Defended', is to appear in the Richard Jefferies Society Journal in April, 2005.

Abstract:
We present data for the rheology of suspensions of monodisperse particles of varying aspect ratio, from oblate to prolate, and covering particle volume fractions ϕ from dilute to highly concentrated. Rheology is characterized by fitting the experimental data to the model of Herschel & Bulkley (Herschel & Bulkley 1926 Kolloid Z. 39 , 291–300 ( doi:10.1007/BF01432034 )) yielding three rheometric parameters: consistency K (cognate with viscosity); flow index n (a measure of shear-thinning); yield stress τ 0 . The consistency K of suspensions of particles of arbitrary aspect ratio can be accurately predicted by the model of Maron & Pierce (Maron & Pierce 1956 J. Colloid Sci. 11 , 80–95 ( doi:10.1016/0095-8522(56)90023-X )) with the maximum packing fraction ϕ m as the only fitted parameter. We derive empirical relationships for ϕ m and n as a function of average particle aspect ratio r p and for τ 0 as a function of ϕ m and a fitting parameter τ *. These relationships can be used to predict the rheology of suspensions of prolate particles from measured ϕ and r p . By recasting our data in terms of the Einstein coefficient, we relate our rheological observations to the underlying particle motions via Jeffery’s (Jeffery 1922 Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 102 , 161–179 ( doi:10.1098/rspa.1922.0078 )) theory. We extend Jeffery’s work to calculate, numerically, the Einstein coefficient for a suspension of many, initially randomly oriented particles. This provides a physical, microstructural explanation of our observations, including transient oscillations seen during run start-up and changes of rheological regime as ϕ increases.

Abstract:

Abstract:
IN 1887,RICHARD JEFFERIES, a popular nature essayist, added his name to the list of several dozen individuals who had written either introductions or notes to Gilbert White'sThe Natural History of Selborne(1789). Jefferies, like many who chose to edit and introduce this text throughout the Victorian period, represents White as a model figure – but a model for two quite different things. On the one hand, Jefferies commends White and hisNatural Historyas examples of simple, reflective engagement with a local, natural economy – an approach to nature that any inquisitive and observant person could emulate. White is thus allied to fictional working-class naturalists like Job Legh in Elizabeth Gaskell'sMary Bartonand leisured clergyman like Mr. Farebrother in George Eliot'sMiddlemarch. All that is needed to become a student of natural history, Jefferies suggests, is curiosity and intelligence. He informs his reader that, “In the same manner [as White] any one who has a taste for out-of-door observations may study natural history without any previous scientific learning. There is not the smallest need to know the Latin names of the birds in order to watch them, or of the flowers in order to gather them” (viii). White is thus put forward as an exemplar of what anyone may aspire to be. White, Jefferies tells his readers, Was not full of evolution when he walked out, or variation, or devolution, or degeneration. He did not look for microbes everywhere. His mind was free and his eye open. To many it would do much good to read this work if only with the object of getting rid of some of the spiders’ webs that have been so industriously spun over the eyesight of those who would like to think for themselves. Natural history observations, distribution maps, diagnoses and descriptions, and a species identification key including B. texana (Gertsch), B. arturoi Alayón, and B. floridensis (Muma) are provided. Detailed descriptions of the male palpus and female genitalia, a review and evaluation of historical terminology used to describe agelenid palpal bulbs, and a discussion of the utility of certain male palpal characters in resolving phylogeny within Agelenidae are provided. Based on the morphology of the male and female genitalia and morphometric data, two species groups are recognized: a large-bodied B. texana species group (B. texana, floridensis, arturoi, jeffersi) and a small-bodied B. barrowsi species group (B. barrowsi, B. stephaniae). A cladistic analysis of Barronopsis, using Tortolena glaucopis (F. O. P.-Cambridge), Melpomene singula (Gertsch & Ivie), and species of Agelenopsis Giebel as outgroups identified three most parsimonious trees of 37 steps. The strict consensus tree yielded the following species relationships: (Agelenopsis (((B. texana, B. jeffersi), B. floridensis, B. arturoi), (B. barrowsi, B. stephaniae))))).Key words: Agelenopsis, revision, taxonomy, phylogenetic analysis

Abstract:
We have applied an approximately Bayesian and a fully Bayesian analysis to the calculation of Cepheid distances, radii and absolute magnitudes using the surface brightness (Baade–Wesselink) method. Both methods successfully account for errors in the data, provide unbiased distance estimates, and provide objective model selection for the radial velocity curve. In addition, the fully Bayesian analysis objectively selects a model for the magnitude curve; averages over models of various Fourier orders, properly weighted by the posterior probabilities of the individual models; and includes a Lutz–Kelker correction. The approximately Bayesian method is that described by Jefferys & Barnes (1999) and Barnes & Jefferys (1999). It is a maximum likelihood approach with objective selection of the order of the Fourier series model of the radial velocities.
