Bezerra, Manoel I. Silvestre, Fernando Antonio Moala, and Yuzo Iano. "A Bayesian Analysis of Spectral ARMA Model." Mathematical Problems in Engineering 2012 (2012): 1–15. http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/565894.

Full text
Abstract:
Bezerra et al. (2008) proposed a new method, based on Yule-Walker equations, to estimate the ARMA spectral model. In this paper, a Bayesian approach is developed for this model by using the noninformative prior proposed by Jeffreys (1967). The Bayesian computations, simulation via Markov Monte Carlo (MCMC) is carried out and characteristics of marginal posterior distributions such as Bayes estimator and confidence interval for the parameters of the ARMA model are derived. Both methods are also compared with the traditional least squares and maximum likelihood approaches and a numerical illustration with two examples of the ARMA model is presented to evaluate the performance of the procedures.

"Melon Fly, Bactrocera Cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae), Infestation in Host Fruits in the Southwestern Islands of Japan before the Initiation of Island-wide Population Suppression, as Recorded in Publications of Japanese Public Institutions." International Journal of Insect Science 7 (January 2015): IJIS.S24582. http://dx.doi.org/10.4137/ijis.s24582.

Full text
Abstract:
Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) is a tephritid fruit fly native to the Indo-Malayan region. Its distribution, though, has extended to include Africa, temperate Asia, and a number of Pacific islands. It became established in Japan in 1919 in the Yaeyama Islands and spread north in the Southwestern Islands of Japan. It was subsequently eradicated from these islands by an eradication program that extended from 1972 to 1993. As part of an effort to develop a worldwide database on the status of fruits as hosts of melon fly, the infestation data gathered from host fruits collected in this eradication program, before the initiation of suppression activities, are summarized here. Bactrocera cucurbitae infestation was documented in 24 plant taxa of four plant families (Caricaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Moraceae, and Solanaceae), with the following four new hosts identified: Ficus erecta Thunb., F. pumila L. (Moraceae), Solanum erianthum D. Don (Solanaceae), and Zehneria liukiuensis Jeffrey ex Walker (Cucurbitaceae).

Full text
Abstract:
The micromorphic brachiopod genus Gwynia was established by William King (1859) on the basis of specimens described by Gwyn Jeffreys (1859) from the coast of Normandy and Belfast Lough. Additional, unpublished records of the genus from Larne and Portrush, collected by Dickie, Hyndman and Waller during the 1850s, were the last sightings of the taxon around Ireland (Massy, 1925). Despite the distinctive characteristics of the genus, Davidson (1861, p. 39) considered it had yet to be sufficiently determined whereas others (see Brunton and Curry, 1979, p. 46) have suggested the genus may be an immature form of Argyrotheca cistellula (Searles-Wood) with which Gwynia often co-occurs. However, that species is consistently transverse with marked exopunctae.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractDuring his short lifetime, Reza Abdoh (1963–1995) was hailed as a trailblazing theater artist in the avant-garde art scenes of both Los Angeles and New York, where he created a series of massive performance spectacles that sought to intervene critically in the American political status quo. His 1992 piece The Law of Remains stages a furious response to the US American AIDS crisis, depicting it through the allegorical lens of a film being made by Andy Warhol based on the life of queer serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. Performed in the ruins of an abandoned hotel ballroom, the piece drew attention in The New York Times for being “one of the angriest theater pieces ever hurled at a New York audience.” This article analyzes the political dimension of Abdoh’s theater by focusing on specific gestural elements that occur at key moments in The Law of Remains. Doing so, it brings together theories of gesture from Hans-Thies Lehmann, Giorgio Agamben, Judith Butler, and Walter Benjamin, and configures these viewpoints into a constellation through which the politics of gesture in Abdoh can be illuminated. What emerges in Abdoh is a politics of “hopeless hope,” one uniquely meaningful for our planetary present tense.

De Sanctis, George T., Walter W. Wolyniec, Francis H. Y. Green, Shixin Qin, Aiping Jiao, Patricia W. Finn, Thomas Noonan, Anthony A. Joetham, Erwin Gelfand, Claire M. Doerschuk, and Jeffrey M. Drazen. Reduction of allergic airway responses in P-selectin-deficient mice. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(3): 681–687, 1997.—P-selectin is an adhesion receptor that has been shown to be important in the recruitment of eosinophils and lymphocytes in a variety of inflammatory conditions. Because cellular recruitment is thought to be a critical event in allergen-induced changes in airway responsiveness, we reasoned that P-selectin-deficient mice would exhibit reduced airway responsiveness and cellular trafficking noted in wild-type (+/+) mice. Both (+/+) and P-selectin-deficient (−/−) mice sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA/OVA) exhibited the same capacity to produce increased titers of total and OVA-specific immunoglobulin E. Airway responsiveness to methacholine was significantly greater in the (+/+) (OVA/OVA) animals than it was in the respective (−/−) (OVA/OVA) group or control groups ( P = 0.0016). Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from (−/−) (OVA/OVA) mice contained significantly fewer eosinophils and lymphocytes compared with the (+/+) (OVA/OVA) mice ( P < 0.05). These results suggest that the predominant role of P-selectin in OVA-induced airway hyperresponsiveness is to promote the airway inflammatory response to allergen inhalation.

Abstract:

Regan, John. "Representing Orality: Scott’s The Lay of the Last Minstrel and Conjectural History." Articles, no. 59-60 (December 12, 2012). http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/1013273ar.

Abstract:
This article contextualizes Walter Scott's The Lay of the Last Minstrel in relation to an Edinburgh literary milieu influenced by some the most famous progenitors of Scottish Enlightenment historical theory. After a preliminary survey of the intellectual landscape out of which Scott's poem comes, the discussion is orientated specifically around the influence, on Scott, of Adam Ferguson's seminal conjectural history, the Essay on the History of Civil Society. Oral poetry is integral to Ferguson's nuanced deteriorationist narrative of human development, and it is my central contention that The Lay is the apotheosis of a Romantic anxiety over the representation of preliterary verse. This article's primary area of interest is not the poetry of The Lay itself but the discourses of history, historicity, verse and versification to which Scott, Adam Ferguson, Francis Jeffrey and several others contributed before, during and after the poem's publication.

Abstract:
Throughout his long life Harold found absorbing interest in all aspects of nature. Most of his published work was about geophysics and dynamical astronomy, but the sixth volume of his Collected papers 1 contains those concerned with other sciences, in particular botany. In my first section I give something of the background to this early work. He was not an adventurous traveller, but he made many visits abroad when it was not so common for scientists to travel as it is now. My second section is concerned with these visits up to 1939.1 have used his reminiscences to me and also letters and photographs in my possession. Photography was for some time a hobby, and I have over 500 quarter-plate negatives and albums with prints dating from 1914; he had given up using his camera when we married in 1940. Excellent prints from some of the plates 2 were shown in St John’s College, Cambridge, in April 1991 when Professor Walter Munk, For.Mem.R.S., gave a centenary lecture.
