Williams, David Wyn. "A dialogic reimagining of a servant's suffering : understanding second Isaiah's servant of Yahweh as a polyphonic hero /." Williams, David Wyn (2007) A dialogic reimagining of a servant's suffering: understanding second Isaiah's servant of Yahweh as a polyphonic hero. Abstract:
A definitive identification of the Servant figure of Second Isaiah is notoriously difficult, as attested by centuries of conjecture and debate. The interpretive obstacles are profuse: the Servant is addressed as Israel-Jacob, but then spoken of in terms that are not consistent with the nation's experience; in some texts he seems to represent a community, while in others he speaks as an individual; he seems to suffer extreme hardship and persecution, but then is said to experience new life; some of his experiences appear to be historical, while others are best described as idealistic. Further hampering objective interpretations are the pervasive traditional approaches among Christian and Jewish readers, which associate the Servant, equally emphatically, with Jesus or Israel. But a primary reason the Servant is so difficult to pin down is rarely considered, and that is that there exists no objective image of the Servant anywhere in Second Isaiah. As a literary character he is constituted entirely by dialogue; that is, by discourse addressed to him, spoken by him, and spoken about him by others in the form of a confession. His actions are never described, and his person is never defined. Scholars have referred to this as his 'fluid' nature, but have lacked the methodological tools for a fuller study of this literary curiosity. The ideas of literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin speak to this type of characterisation. His 'polyphonic hero' is a fictional character who is constituted by what is spoken to him or her, by what they overhear said concerning them, and by how they make that discourse, and the discourse of the wider world, an aspect of their own self-knowledge. They become known only by the discourse that converges on them, much as the Servant of Second Isaiah is constituted. This thesis develops a reading strategy based on Bakhtin's theory of the polyphonic hero, as well as his broader theories of dialogism. It reimagines the inner discourse of the Servant in order to comprehend him according to the dialogue by which he knows himself, and not according to conventional reading strategies that seek for a fixed, opaque image. In the process it discovers that there are not multiple Servants, which is often posited as a solution to the problem of his fluid nature, but one Servant, Israel-Jacob, whose self-knowledge as the faithful Servant of Yahweh calls empirical Israel to faith in a time of national distress. It concludes that the Servant is present in the collection of Second Isaiah as a 'voice-idea', the embodiment of a theologically critical position that calls many of Israel's theological and ideological presuppositions into question, in order to liberate her for a renewed history as a faithful 'witness' to Yahweh her redeemer.

Abstract:
The reason behind this essay has been to study if previous research is relevant for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sweden and see if secularization has affected the organization or not. The empirical material is made from two qualitative group- interviews and open observations during two meetings in the Kingdom Hall. These studies were performed in Oskarshamn and Mönsterås during the month of February. The reason that these studies have been limited to Oskarshamn and Mönsterås is mainly because they were the only ones willing to do an interview.  According to previous research by James A. Beckfors and Andrew Holden, it has been shown that the Jehovah’s Witnesses hasn’t been affected by secularization, neither by new interpretations nor from the decrease of predicators. In my study, the interviewees have experienced secularization over the last 10-15 years while they are out preaching the religion. The organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sweden has been setting up rules for the members to follow, such as not live together before marriage or not get tattoos. This is rules set up to keep a distance between the members and the society and therefore the organization avoid the secularization.

Abstract:
This essay aims to identify and illustrate, in relation to Stig Hjarvards (2013) theory of mediatization, the factors for defection that Swedish news media portray as decisive for women leaving Jehovah´s witnesses. The material consist of six news articles collected from four different news media who all published stories about women which defected from Jehovah´s witnesses. The method of the essay is a transversal text analysis and the program Open Code 4.03 has been used to assess the results. The process of coding was abductive which means, inthis essay, that the categories used in Open Code was mainly created based on the presented previous research on religious defection but also by a thoroughly reading of the articles. This genereted in five overall themes: family, external factors, organizational, world view and mental health. The factors for defection that is brought up by the articles is categorized in these themes. The result was then analyzed based on Hjarvards (2013) theory of mediatization and his explanations to it by these three metaphors of media; media as conduits, media as languages and journalism on media. The analyzed results indicated, among other things, factors for defection regarding deprivation of freedom, prohibition within the movement and unequal conditions for men and women. The results also showed medias aim to enforce factors connected to love and sex to create entertainment value. According to my interpretation of Hjarvards (2013) theory the results shows news medias desire to be an institution that criticalexamines religious organizations that do not fit in with secular norms of Swedish society.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore how interpersonal relationship can be affected by groing up in a New Religoius Movement such as Jehovah’s Withnesses and how it has affected them both in their youth and today. The aim was also to explore if there were people in the respondents' environment that was significant to them during their childhood and which support our respondents have received if they were in need of it.We have not found any previous research on children's social relationships within the Jehovah's Witnesses. We therefore believe that this study is of high relevance to both society and also for all the professionals who come into contact with these children. To discover a child in need, knowledge about how their social environment looks like is crucial. We chose to conduct qualitative interviews with six former Jehovah's Witnesses. The main theories we have assumed is the theory of social interactionism and cognitive dissonance. The vast majority of our respondents have grown up in a strong relationship with their faithful family and assembly. They believe that they have had a large social network but still felt alone in their concerns and thoughts. Several of the interviewees have experienced dissonance when their beliefs collided with societal values and norms. Some of our interviewees have only had contact with other witnesses (aside from the inevitable contact through school) because they have been taught that "worldly people", or non-Witnesses, are evil and their enemies. Others have had several relationships with people outside the organization and have never experienced this as wrong or strange. The genuine cohesion they experienced during childhood has had a sharp end in connection with the respondents' exclusions, when virtually all the faithful witnesses chosen to turn their back on them. Following the exclusion, several interviewees sought professional help in the form of therapy and they all allege that their upbringing has had negative consequences for them in adulthood.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This bachelor’s degree will examine the Swedish translation of the publication Awake! a religious monthly periodical published by the Jehovah’s witnesses as a way to complement their primary magazine The Watchtower.  The purpose of this examination is to do a rhetorical analysis on how Awake! Magazine takes part in spreading the witnesses’ message and to examine what is being communicated towards its readers and what sort of language and arguments is used. One of my primary goals during this paper will be to also examine what sort of messages the periodical is sending towards its younger readers. The gathered empirical material will be examined through Berger and Luckmanns theories about social constructs and institutionalizations and Bourdieu’s Doxa theory. This study will show that the language that the periodical uses is constantly laden with religious meaning, every aspect of the everyday goings on that Awake! Magazine writes about is combined with excerpts from the Bible or other material published by Jehovah’s Witness. There is also a clear distinction in the way the magazine communicates with its readers. The language used to older readers is often aimed at their sense of logic, reason and at times meant to evoke the reader’s feelings towards different subject matters. The language and arguments aimed at the younger readers is instead focused on warnings and the importance of keeping chaste and obedient. The final summation shows that the periodical mostly uses a language and argument that is meant to bolster the readers pride and loyalty towards Jehovah’s and to underline the importance of innocent and obedience in teenagers and the seductive and corrosive nature of society outside of the confines of their faith.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine how the identity of young adults raised within Jehovah's Witnesses is affected by exclusion. This is based on the social identity theory and Marcia’s theory of the identity statuses in an identity development. The study was qualitative with semi-structured interviews with eight young adults formerly. Jehovah's Witnesses who grew up in the organization. The inductive thematic analysis yielded three main themes; In- and out-group thinking; subordination and obedience as well as incipient distancing and awakening. One of the results was that the participants had already learned an in- and out-group thinking as children. and that on the basis of this social identification, the participants' contact was limited to only spending time with the ingroup and avoiding contact with people in the outgroup. This had the effect of exclusion in the building of new social relationships, where they lacked a frame of reference on how to act in certain contexts, they did not know what was expected of them in society, they lacked the overall picture of society and its social interaction.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to depict the exit-process out of the religious group Jehovah's Witnesses, and compare nine informants narratives about the exit-process with three other models that´s been constructed over the exit-process from religious groups and compare and discuss the informants narratives about the exit-process with each other. The result of the study shows that the informants narratives about their exit-process shows some resemblance with the models about the exit-process that the authors Pernilla Liedgren Dobronravoff and Norman Skonovd has developed, and some lesser resemblance with the model about the exit-process that author Stuart Wright has developed. It is also important to point out that the informants narratives do not strengthen any of the models about the exit-process enough to call them complete, because of the differences that shows up in the informants narratives abouth their exit-processes from Jehovah´s Witnesses. The narratives of the informants exit-processes differ from each othertoo, mainly about the length of the exit-process, and the feelings that they feel during the exit-process. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study about the exit-process from the organization Jehovah´s Witnesses is that the exit-process seems to be very individual, although the informants narratives shows some resemblance in their exit-process, mainly about doubts throughout the exit-process, "the turning points", and the lack of support from the "original family" during the exit-process.

This study focuses on the previous beliefs of persons who are active in Jehovas Witnesses. It also focuses on the circumstances which made the person enter the organisation. Seven persons, four women and three men were subjects for my question in this study. The question formulations are as follows: How does the person’s previous beliefs look like? Are there any circumstances which may have made the person enter Jehovas Witnesses? How does the membership in the organisation give the person meaning?  The persons are all living in the area of Småland, in south of Sweden. The conclusion is that all of the informants have in some way expressed some sort of faith, weather it consists of a believe in God, a guardian angel or something else.

Abstract:
McPhail (1854-1931).
MUSIC AND JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES : HISTORICAL APPROACH TO THEIR HYMNALS AND MUSICAL PRACTICES Over the 130 years of history of Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s), music has been part of most of its meetings. They have published or used fifteen hymnals in English and at least six in Spanish and one in Catalan; they have used music for several decades in radio evangelism and from house to house; they have used large and small orchestras and choirs and they have edited sound recordings for both congregational and personal use. What is known about this? What are, or have been, their hymnals? Which hymns have they sung? Have they changed them over the years? Have they ever used or continue to use orchestras and choirs? What kind of sound recordings have they made? Who are the people behind all this? The approach of this paper is to get to know this lesser known aspect of JW’s: Musical practices within the group. It specially takes a historical approach of the hymnals they have edited and used and also of the people and other different "products" related to music (radio, recordings, orchestras, etc.). This thesis is made up of five chapters and five annexes. The chapters focus on the justification, state-of-the-art and methodology used (Chapter I). A general overview of JWs’ historical and musical background (Chapter II). A historical overview of their hymnals published in English since 1877 and the sources used (Chapter III). A similar description for those in Spanish since 1919 and in Catalan since 2008 (Chapter IV). Conclusions, sources and bibliography (Chapter V). The first two annexes deal exclusively with the historical development of the group in Spain (Annex I) and in a Catalan city (Annex II). The three remaining are directly related to the musical practices of JW's. They present a series of lists with the hymns of hymnals described in Chapters III and IV (Annex III). A historical description of sound recordings produced by JW's and the way they have used radio and music as well as orchestras and choirs (Annex IV). The final annex (Annex V) is dedicated to group members involved in its musical practices with special emphasis on the figure of M.L. McPhail (1854-1931).

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to identify power structures and instruments of power within the Jehovah’s witnesses and investigate how they affect the baptized youths baptized within the organization. The material consists of qualitative in-depth interviews and is analyzed with Foucault's theories of power. The results show that the participants have a very strict relationship to the rules of the congregation and also that they take great care in observing these rules carefully. It becomes evident that young members are exposed to disciplinary measures from the organization. It is also quite clear that the youths internalize hegemonic ideals and that they therefore try to discipline themselves in order to achieve a self image as a good servant of God. The participants concede that they are constantly being surveyed by the congregation and they also express that God is constantly surveying them. Within the organization there is a reward/punishment system which’s purpose is to strengthen the will to follow the organizations rules. My investigation shows that there are power structures and instruments of power within Jehovah’s witnesses that strongly affect the world within which the interviewees live. The instruments of power identified in this thesis drill the participants’ mental and physical operating space. In the thesis I also differentiate power structures within the organization. Foucault’s diffuse concepts about “the power” are concretized using the organization of Jehovah’s witnesses. The ones who represent “the power” are the ones who gain an advantageous position within the organization, but “the power” also stems from the atmosphere, discourse, and hegemonic ideals that surround the organization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine the eucharist in three denominations of Christianity, namely Svenska kyrkan, Pingst and Jehovah’s witnesses. These groups are examined individually, followed by a comparison of the different views of the eucharist. The information the examination is based on are different official documents provided by the named denominations’ theologians and elders for both members of the church as well as the public. The comparison is followed by a discussion about the relationship between the denominations’ view on eucharist and their ecclesiology, i.e. their view of the church.    The results show that the differences between them are much due to the sources they use to support their claims as well as their individual history. The similarities are found to be due to a general desire to unite all members of the congregation and to let everyone take part in a collective connection with Christ regardless of whether or not the partakers roles in the church. The discussion about the relationship between the three denominations’ relationships between eucharist and ecclesiology show that the eucharist is a somewhat good representation of the general denominations’ views. This conclusion aligns with the view of Scott W. Bullard’s research about the relationship between the eucharist and the church, where the result is that the eucharist is a foundation of the church’s construction and organization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is a popular misconception in the world that Jehovah is too severe on occasion while Jesus Christ is always kind and merciful. The Latter-day Saint belief that Jehovah and Jesus are the same person presents a supposed conflict. There has not been much written on this subject by either non-Latter-day Saints or Latter-day Saints, thus, this thesis represents a unique contribution to a common perception prevalent in many Christian circles. The research of this thesis shows that the misconception is based on three problems: first, a misinterpretation of biblical stories in both the Old and New Testament; second, a lack of understanding biblical context and culture; and third, a lack of applying modern revelation to this subject. The research of this thesis focuses on these three areas in an effort to resolve this false perception. This thesis takes a deeper look into the acts of Jehovah and Jesus Christ as found in the Old and New Testaments respectively. Next, it looks as several doctrines related to this subject that have been revealed through latter-day prophets and incorporates them into the Old Testament. This analysis paints a broader picture of the Lord and illustrates that He was, indeed, merciful in the Old Testament but, at times, severe in the New Testament. Lastly, this thesis takes four of the most difficult Old Testament stories that seem to represent Jehovah as harsh, capricious, and unyielding, and puts them in their cultural setting. Though not every act can be completely explained, there is a high degree of similarity between Jehovah and Jesus. The study concludes, therefore, that much of the problem lies with perception and not with reality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to provide material that can explain the development and division of millennialism and in what way it has influenced Jehovah´s Witnesses and their millennial belief. The essay also brings up whether or not this area of Christianity is something that should be part of the religious studies in school.    The material used is previous research done focused on millennialism and Jehovah´s Witnesses, which then has been analyzed and read to give a better understanding of the two fields.    The results show that millennialism has developed alongside society and various historical events, such as the rise of the Roman empire, and several religious seminal figures have affected how Christians think about millennialism. It has led to three different ways of viewing millennialism, with the difference being the thought of when Jesus will return in the order of events that will take place in the end time.    The results also show that millennialism has a great impact on Jehovah´s Witnesses and their choice of lifestyle. They spend a lot of time preparing both themselves and others for the apocalypse, which they believe to be coming in the near future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay aims to investigate how students raised in Jehovah's Witnesses have experienced their career counseling during their middle and high school education. My main objectives are, based on the testimonies of former Jehovah's Witnesses, to investigate how career counselors can find a strategy to approach these students in a non-threatening way. I also try to take into account the contextual elements which are of great importance when counseling students raised as Jehovah's Witnesses. A qualitative study has been carried out with five informants with a background in the movement. The material has then been analyzed using a qualitative, narrative method. The study shows a lack of approach-strategy and tools for treatment of student with a background in Jehovah's Witnesses. Result and analysis shows that the students were in need of someone to talk to about their future and career during their middle- and high school education, and they think that a career counselor could have been that person. On the other hand the informants describe the difficulties a career counselor might have in reaching these students, and they suggest that a certain degree of knowledge about Jehovah´s witnesses, and a counseling method might be necessary in order to successfully help these students. A constructivist approach that takes into account contextual factors is described in this study as a helpful tool for career counselors whom want to reach students with a background in Theoretical terms used in the thesis are constructivist approach-strategy, self-authorship, interpersonal balance stage, institutional balance stage, contextual affordance

Abstract:
Summary To become, to be and to have been: about the  Jehovah’s Witnesses The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, in the following text referred to as the Jehovah’s Witnesses or “the organisation”, is a worldwide Christian organisation with about 6.7 million members. The organisation has many times, without any success so far, proclaimed Armageddon when they expect Jehovah to return to Earth. They interpret the Bible in their own, often very literal way, and require their members to live according to these interpretations. Among the consequences of this, members are forbidden to vote, to do military service or to receive blood transfusions. Apart from attending the three weekly meetings, members are expected to be active in missionary work, known as “publishing”. If a member fails to do a certain number of hours’ publishing, he or she risks being deprived of active membership status Sweden in general is considered to be a society where the population is not very religious. The formerly state-governed Lutheran church has lost its influence and the vast majority of ordinary Swedes do not visit church on other occasions than weddings, funerals or christenings. Expressing one’s own religious values has become somewhat of a private matter where publicity is seldom appreciated, which is contrary to the practice of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is one of the reasons why the Jehovah’s Witnesses are commonly perceived by average Swedes as a “suspicious” religious organisation. The aim and methods of the study This dissertation seeks to describe and investigate the entering and leaving of a highly structured and hierarchical religious community, exemplified in this case by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. What are the thoughts and aspirations of someone who is considering becoming a Jehovah’s Witness? What are the priorities and what experiences seem important when a person is going through such a process? And when this person has finally reached his or her goal of becoming a member, is it the same motivation that makes him or her stay in the organisation for longer periods of time, possibly for the rest of their lives, or does it change during the process of entering, or does this motivation change its character during the transition from entering to being a regular member? Why do some of the members change their attitude to the Jehovah’s Witnesses from rejoicing to bitterness? And how does this process of exit manifest itself? In what way is it different from the process of entry? The respondents in this study were chosen from both active members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sweden and those who have left the organisation for personal reasons. Repeated interviews with ten active members of the organisation have been conducted in the course of the study and compared to equal numbers of former members. The interviews have been semi-structured to deal with questions of how a person has come into contact with the organisation; how they retrospectively experienced the process of entry; the reasons for becoming a member. Questions have also been asked about life in the organisation. The group of “exiters” have also been asked about the experience of leaving, why they wanted to leave, and how this process was started and carried out. In addition to this I have analysed a four-year diary describing the time inside and the process of leaving the organisation. This has given me an extra psychological insight into the inner experience of someone who has gone through the whole process. The analysis has been done by categorising the content of the transcribed interviews. An attempt to outline a model of an entry and exit process has been made, based on ideas and interpretations presented in the interviews. The analysis of the diary has involved thorough reading, resulting in a division of it into four different parts, where each part has been given a certain key-word, signifying the author’s emotional state when writing it. A great deal of the information about the Jehovah’s Witnesses has been collected through discussion boards on the Internet, informal talks with members and ex-members, interviews with representatives of the organisations during visits to its different offices (Bethels), such as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Brooklyn, New York, USA. The context Each organisation evolves in its own context with its own norms, roles and stories that would not survive outside it. With this as a starting point, there is a chapter dedicated to the description of the organisation’s history, structure and activities. It has been stated that the organisation’s treatment of its critical members and the strategies for recruiting new members have evolved over the years of its history. At the beginning there was an openness allowing members to be critical. As the structure of the organisation has become more rigid and formalised, the treatment of internal critics has become much less tolerated and exclusion has become a frequent option. As a rule many new members have been attracted to the organisation when (1) the day of Armageddon has been pronounced to be approaching; (2) the members of the organisation have been persecuted or threatened with persecution; and (3) the organisation has discovered a “new market”. The processes for entering and exiting How the entering processes manifest themselves depends on whether the person has been brought up in the organisation or not. A person converting as an adult has to pass six phases before being considered a Jehovah’s Witness by the organisation. These are:  Contact with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Studying the bible with members of the organisation, Questioning, Accepting, Being active as publisher (spreading the belief), Being baptised.  For a person brought up in the organisation, the process to full membership is much shorter:   Upbringing in the organisation, Taking a stand on the belief, Being baptised. The exit process contains of seven phases:   Different levels of doubts, Testing of doubts, Turning points, Different kinds of decisions, Different steps in executing the decisions, Floating, a period of emotional and cognitive consideration of membership and its experiences, Realtive neutrality.   The process in and the process out are both slow and are accompanied with anguish and doubts. When a person is going through the process in or out of the organisation he or she experiences criticism. This is when people around the adept question the decision to continue in the process. The result of the criticism depends on where in the process the person is. If he or she is at the beginning of the process, the criticism will probably make the person insecure and the process will slow down or stop. If the criticism is pronounced in a later phase, the process will probably speed up. The norms of the organisation affect the behaviour of the members. There are techniques for inclusion that both bind members to the organisation and shield them off from the surrounding society. Examples of techniques for inclusion are the “work situation” and “closed doors”. The work situation signifies that members who do as the organisation recommends – doing simple work – often end up in the same branch of industry as many other Jehovah’s Witnesses. This often means that the person has other witnesses as workmates. If the person is unemployed or moves to another town it is easy to find a new job through connections in the organisation. Doubts and exclusions can lead to problems since they entail a risk of losing one’s job. This can also result in problems getting a new job. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not supposed to talk to excluded members, which of course mean difficulties working together. “Closed doors” means that members who do as the organisation recommends – not pursuing higher education, not engaging in civil society, working with a manual or in other way simple job, putting much time into the organisation – will, after a long life in the organisation, have problems starting a new life outside the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The language used in the organisation shows the community among the members, thus the language is one of the most important symbols. A special way of thinking is created through the language. It binds members to the organisation and sometimes it can work as a way to get back into the normative world of the organisation. Randall Collins’s (1990, 2004) thoughts about “emotional energy” have enabled an understanding of the solidarity and unity in the organisation. This also gives an understanding of the way the members treat doubting and critical members. The members who want to exit have to open up the binding/screening off. A possible way to do that is through language, to become aware of the effect the language might have. Another way is to search for emotional energy in another situation. During the exit process, shame might be of some importance. When members become aware of the shame they feel, because they perceive they are “acting a belief”, the exit process might accelerate.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Master’s Degree is to identify and understand different techniques of argumentation in written texts originating from the religious movement Jehovah's Witnesses. The purpose is also to contribute with a theoretical and methodological framework for other scholars. The focal point of the thesis is sexuality and how the authors of the texts try to convince the members to follow the movements' doctrines in this regard. I use a modified version of the well-established grounded theory method. The material is analyzed partly with concepts introduced by Mooney in 2005 but overall the analysis is made in an unbiased way without theoretical support. Theoretical models and terms are instead used in the final analysis to understand how the different techniques of argumentation are supposed to work. These theoretical models stems from, among others,  Foucault, Meerloo, Ben-Ze'ev, Mooney, Berger och Luckmann, Granström and Rapp Young. In the Master’s Degree a great number of techniques are identified within the following five categories: Guilt, Doubt, To nurture instead of convincing, Seemingly logical arguments and Groupthinking. Within the category of Guilt the techniques play on the reader's feelings of guilt, and within the category of Doubt the techniques focus on the reader's feelings of doubt. To nurture instead of convincing is a collection of techniques with the purpose of nurturing already established notions and preconceptions among the readers. Seemingly logical arguments deals with techniques concerning semantic manipulation and lastly, techniques focused on groupthinking aims to bind the reader closer to the movement and tries to get them to reject the outside world. The goal here is for the members to achieve a state within group psychology known as groupthinking.
