Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine how the identity of young adults raised within Jehovah's Witnesses is affected by exclusion. This is based on the social identity theory and Marcia’s theory of the identity statuses in an identity development. The study was qualitative with semi-structured interviews with eight young adults formerly. Jehovah's Witnesses who grew up in the organization. The inductive thematic analysis yielded three main themes; In- and out-group thinking; subordination and obedience as well as incipient distancing and awakening. One of the results was that the participants had already learned an in- and out-group thinking as children. and that on the basis of this social identification, the participants' contact was limited to only spending time with the ingroup and avoiding contact with people in the outgroup. This had the effect of exclusion in the building of new social relationships, where they lacked a frame of reference on how to act in certain contexts, they did not know what was expected of them in society, they lacked the overall picture of society and its social interaction.

This study focuses on the previous beliefs of persons who are active in Jehovas Witnesses. It also focuses on the circumstances which made the person enter the organisation. Seven persons, four women and three men were subjects for my question in this study. The question formulations are as follows: How does the person’s previous beliefs look like? Are there any circumstances which may have made the person enter Jehovas Witnesses? How does the membership in the organisation give the person meaning?  The persons are all living in the area of Småland, in south of Sweden. The conclusion is that all of the informants have in some way expressed some sort of faith, weather it consists of a believe in God, a guardian angel or something else.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine the eucharist in three denominations of Christianity, namely Svenska kyrkan, Pingst and Jehovah’s witnesses. These groups are examined individually, followed by a comparison of the different views of the eucharist. The information the examination is based on are different official documents provided by the named denominations’ theologians and elders for both members of the church as well as the public. The comparison is followed by a discussion about the relationship between the denominations’ view on eucharist and their ecclesiology, i.e. their view of the church.    The results show that the differences between them are much due to the sources they use to support their claims as well as their individual history. The similarities are found to be due to a general desire to unite all members of the congregation and to let everyone take part in a collective connection with Christ regardless of whether or not the partakers roles in the church. The discussion about the relationship between the three denominations’ relationships between eucharist and ecclesiology show that the eucharist is a somewhat good representation of the general denominations’ views. This conclusion aligns with the view of Scott W. Bullard’s research about the relationship between the eucharist and the church, where the result is that the eucharist is a foundation of the church’s construction and organization.

Abstract:

In the study of the Holocaust and the genocidal policies of the Nazi regime, emphasis is most frequently placed on the attempted extermination of the Jewish population of Europe. While this focus is not misplaced, the result of this focus often forces other persecuted groups into the background. The persecution of the Jehovah’s Witnesses of Germany is often given limited attention in Holocaust historiography. Although not designated for extermination like the Jews, the Nazi regime sought to bring about an end to the presence of this religious sect, viewing the Witnesses as a threat to the unity of the German Reich. This paper draws on the theories of Benedict Anderson and Hannah Arendt and uses the region of present-day North Rhine-Westphalia as a case study in an effort to explain how and why the Jehovah’s Witnesses (unlike other sectarian religions) came to be seen as enemies of the Reich. It is estimated that there were 2,500 documented cases of state-sponsored persecution inflicted upon Witnesses living in North Rhine-Westphalia. The types of persecution varied from trial and imprisonment in concentration camps, to the removal of children from the care of their parents, to execution. Although the numbers of individuals targeted do not rival those of the Jews, their marginalization in the study of the Holocaust and genocide limits our understanding of the scope of this crime against humanity. This paper is an attempt to correct this deficiency.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine power, control, resistance, and the relationalconsequences of leaving Jehovah’s Witnesses. The analysis focused on eightnarratives from the internet forum reddit.com, /r/exjw, where authors describeprocesses in which they challenge their belonging to the organization. The materialhas been analysed using qualitative content analysis, Bromley’s theory of thedisaffiliation process and Raven and French’s theory of power/interaction andinterpersonal influence. The findings point to four tendencies about how certainmembers Jehovah’s Witnesses tried to exert control over (former) members whowant to leave the organization; by controlling resources and social relationships, inflicting harm, engaging in emotional manipulation, and surveillance. None ofthese activities led to increased engagement among those who were the target, butthese actions could slow down the exit process. The study also show thatindividual's resistance was expressed in different ways, through protest, reducedcommitment, intellectual exploration, engagement in new social networks, selfassertion and by disaffiliation. Acts of resistance that were openly expressed tendedto lead to increased control by members of the religious community. The socialconsequences for individuals who (wanted to) leave the organization weredescribed as conflicts, neglect, and rejection.

Abstract:
The reason behind this essay has been to study if previous research is relevant for Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sweden and see if secularization has affected the organization or not. The empirical material is made from two qualitative group- interviews and open observations during two meetings in the Kingdom Hall. These studies were performed in Oskarshamn and Mönsterås during the month of February. The reason that these studies have been limited to Oskarshamn and Mönsterås is mainly because they were the only ones willing to do an interview.  According to previous research by James A. Beckfors and Andrew Holden, it has been shown that the Jehovah’s Witnesses hasn’t been affected by secularization, neither by new interpretations nor from the decrease of predicators. In my study, the interviewees have experienced secularization over the last 10-15 years while they are out preaching the religion. The organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sweden has been setting up rules for the members to follow, such as not live together before marriage or not get tattoos. This is rules set up to keep a distance between the members and the society and therefore the organization avoid the secularization.

Abstract:

Gay men from conservative Christian denominations like the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW), where a non-heterosexual identity is considered ungodly, experience difficulties integrating their sexual identity into such a religious identity (Brooke, 2005). This study explored the therapeutic experiences of gay male individuals who aspired to reconcile their spiritual identities as current, or former Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) with their concurrent non-heterosexual identities. The purpose of this research was to identify specific interventions and processes in therapy that these individuals highlight as having helped them (or hindered them) syncretize their gay sexual orientation with their spiritual beliefs and practices.

Utilizing elements of the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique (Butterfield, Borgen, Maglio, & Amundson, 2005) eight gay men who are, or were, Jehovah’s Witnesses and who had participated in psychotherapy were interviewed in order to identify aspects of their therapeutic experience that they found helped them in their desire to integrate their religious identities and their sexual orientation. Elements of the psychotherapy experience that participants identified as important included the establishment of a safe therapeutic environment, the therapists’ use of self-disclosure and active engagement in therapy, the therapists’ willingness to learn about Jehovah’s Witnesses’ beliefs, and the importance of the therapists’ cultural competence in professional practice. The findings of the study revealed that client-therapist connection, therapeutic engagement, and the act of empowering gay JW clients were critical in facilitating the integration of competing sexual and religious identities for the participants. The best practices identified by the participants can inform the development of culture-specific training for therapists who treat JW gay men, and suggest areas for further research.

Abstract:
The following study examines the conflicting discourses between the swedish school system andthe Christian denomination of Jehovah’s witnesses on the swedish upper secondary schoolcurriculum and its subject content. The purpose has been to identify if the discourses present avalue conflict with school interests and discuss both how these are different and why they constitutea conflict. This has been achieved by examining the religious body’s recent publications on thesubject through a discourse analysis method. The study shows that there are several themes in the swedish upper secondary schoolcurriculum and subject content in which Jehovah’s witnesses have discourses conflicting with theschool’s own, possibly constituting practical issues in the day to day education of students. Themain conflicts lies within the areas of social integration of students, the non-denominationalcharacter of the school system, sex education, the stance of religious pluralism taken in the subjectof religious studies, historical method and the subject content of natural science primarilyconcerning evolutionary biology. The study also concludes that there is a wide gap and lack ofinformation surrounding these conflicts and how teachers and other school staff should approach oravoid them. This ultimately derives from a lack of research around the subject and deficientguidelines from the Swedish National Agency for Education surrounding not only how to approachstudents that are Jehovah’s witnesses but religious discourses surrounding the curriculum andschool subjects in general.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the action of the Jehovah\'s Witnesses, a North American millenary religious sect, in São Paulo, between 1930 and 1954. During Vargas and Dutra\'s governments, the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War, the Watchtower Society (\"Sociedade Torre de Vigia de Bíblias e Tratados\") - juridical name adopted in Brazil by the Jehovah\'s Witnesses - publications had been confiscated, its members had been arrested and the registry of activities had been exiled from the country between 1940 and 1947. Under various and contradictory claims, the Jehovah\'s Witnesses had been charged with advertising the nazism, fascism, anarchism and communism, based on the lack of rendering obligatory military service, lack of salutation of the national symbols, lack of blood transfusion and anticlergy proselytism, made everywhere in the city. Believing that they were the \"first missionaries\" on a superstitious Catholic reality, the Jehovah\'s Witnesses reissued in Brazil, from the twenties on, the same speech that was used by the English Puritan who settled America on the 17th century: they were the \"elected people\" by God on Earth and told they were here to struggle with the \"devilish\" and \"obscurantist\" organizations, such as the Catholic Church. Despite the narrowing between Brazilian and American relationship at the end of the thirties, our real entrance at the Second World War with the Allied and the checked help between both countries at the post-war period against the Communism, the Jehovah\'s Witnesses, a North American organization, had been chased in the country, maybe because they also reissued in Brazil the mythical rhetorical of the USA construction, in the defense of cult freedom and democratic system - different from the Brazilian Catholicism and undergrown. Based on these, we intend to see at which extent the judicial and political chasing against this religious organization, which had less than followers until 1947, found the echo on the benefits narrowing between the Catholic Church and the Brazilian states.

Abstract:
This essay aims to identify and illustrate, in relation to Stig Hjarvards (2013) theory of mediatization, the factors for defection that Swedish news media portray as decisive for women leaving Jehovah´s witnesses. The material consist of six news articles collected from four different news media who all published stories about women which defected from Jehovah´s witnesses. The method of the essay is a transversal text analysis and the program Open Code 4.03 has been used to assess the results. The process of coding was abductive which means, inthis essay, that the categories used in Open Code was mainly created based on the presented previous research on religious defection but also by a thoroughly reading of the articles. This genereted in five overall themes: family, external factors, organizational, world view and mental health. The factors for defection that is brought up by the articles is categorized in these themes. The result was then analyzed based on Hjarvards (2013) theory of mediatization and his explanations to it by these three metaphors of media; media as conduits, media as languages and journalism on media. The analyzed results indicated, among other things, factors for defection regarding deprivation of freedom, prohibition within the movement and unequal conditions for men and women. The results also showed medias aim to enforce factors connected to love and sex to create entertainment value. According to my interpretation of Hjarvards (2013) theory the results shows news medias desire to be an institution that criticalexamines religious organizations that do not fit in with secular norms of Swedish society.

The objective of this paper is to analyze the confrontation occurred between the German Nazi Party and the religious group Jehovah's Witnesses, called at the time Bibelforschers (Bible Students). The group has positioned itself ideologically against the Nazi Party's proposals, and did so adamantly, that became the subject of an intensity of persecution proportionally higher than the other persecuted religious groups and banned by the regime, as will be shown. The research will examine the emergence and development of the group, emphasizing the establishment of the doctrines that made possible confrontation. Also it will examine the development of Nazi ideology in ways that opposed the position expressed by the group. About the Nazi party, it will still be analyzed as he himself being a religion. The strategies for survival adopted by other groups will also be studied for contextualization purposes. Finally, some illustrative facts of the conflict itself will be presented and analyzed, as a demonstration of the materialization of the ideological conflict. Although Jehovah's Witnesses have been studied in other ways, it is possible to see that the conflict of this group with the Nazi Party has been little studied in Brazil, perhaps because of being a small group in Germany in the period treated by this research. And when mentioned, it is usually under an aspect eminently historic. The purpose of this work is to identify the ideological causes of the conflict
O propósito deste trabalho é identificar e analisar as causas ideológicas do conflito

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 100-108.
This thesis is in search of voices from the margin in biblical hermeneutics. Firstly, biblical hermeneutics in the third world (Korea and South Africa) is marginalized by European biblical hermeneutics. However, their biblical hermeneutics plays significant roles in a political and cultural context in the name of the same God. Therefore, from a historical viewpoint, this thesis compares and analyses ’contextualized biblical hermeneutics’ in Korea and South Africa. in the process, this thesis reveals that their voices have significance. From a cultural aspect, Koreans’ unique Christian religious practices, which were characterized by ‘early-morning prayers’, ‘audible prayers’ and ‘rice contribution’, induced Christianity to be transformed into Korean Christianity. Similarly, Africans interpreted the Bible without losing their traditional cultural assets such as ‘ancestor worship’, ‘polygamy’, ‘music & dance‘, and ‘healing’. Furthermore, they developed and transformed Christianity into the African Christianity through their own agencies, AIC (African indigenous Churches). On the other hand, from a political aspect, whether Europeans (Afrikaners) or black South Africans; whether Japanese or Koreans; whether oppressors or oppressed, the Bible was the object of political interpretation for strengthening Bible readers’ political power in each context. in other words, Bible reading was contextualized given political context of each Bible reader. if Bible reading was important to Europeans, so it was also vital to Koreans and South Africans. This is because the Bible has been interpreted on the basis of Bible readers’ context in history, whether in European, Korean or South African cultural and political contexts. On this ground, there is no reason why Korean and South African biblical hermeneutics should be disregarded by European biblical hermeneutics. In the name of Korean Christianity or South African Christianity, they must have their voices. Secondly, biblical hermeneutics of Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs)' is marginalized in the name of heresy by Christendom, which includes mainline churches in Europe, South Africa and Korea. However, their biblical hermeneutics plays important roles in unifying people of different contexts on the basis of the same Bible. Therefore, this thesis reveals the significance of their ‘decontextualized biblical hermeneutics’ through exemplary biblical interpretations. In the process, their voices have significance. From a cultural aspect, JWs' missionaries arrived comparatively later than mainline church missionaries. Accordingly, they did not have to get through cultural conflicts between traditional cultural norms and biblical norms. On this ground, their biblical interpretation could be applied in a global dimension, which reveals a sur-cultural aspect. In particular, their ‘house-to-house preaching work’ and ‘abstaining from blood transfusion’ are their representative religious practices, whether in Korea or South Africa. From a political aspect, .JWs have not participated in wars, military service or military training. Therefore, they have been persecuted by governments and military authorities. Worse still, they have been branded as heretics by Christendom. Nonetheless, on the basis of ‘decontextualized biblical hermeneutics’, this thesis puts an emphasis on various biblical reasons why they consistently have rejected and continue to reject military service. Central theme of their Bible reading is based on God's Kingdom beyond their political and cultural context. Nonetheless, this theme of God's Kingdom provides JWs with great strength, with which they are able to live in global unity. On this stance, they did not take part in the past tragic political history, whether in Korea or South Africa. Lastly, even though diverse and pluralistic biblical interpretation was a threat rather than a productive challenge to church authority, this thesis reveals that a dichotomous category could be the first step in reading the Bible for contemporary Bible readers in the name of ‘contextualized and decontextualized biblical hermeneutics.’

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore how interpersonal relationship can be affected by groing up in a New Religoius Movement such as Jehovah’s Withnesses and how it has affected them both in their youth and today. The aim was also to explore if there were people in the respondents' environment that was significant to them during their childhood and which support our respondents have received if they were in need of it.We have not found any previous research on children's social relationships within the Jehovah's Witnesses. We therefore believe that this study is of high relevance to both society and also for all the professionals who come into contact with these children. To discover a child in need, knowledge about how their social environment looks like is crucial. We chose to conduct qualitative interviews with six former Jehovah's Witnesses. The main theories we have assumed is the theory of social interactionism and cognitive dissonance. The vast majority of our respondents have grown up in a strong relationship with their faithful family and assembly. They believe that they have had a large social network but still felt alone in their concerns and thoughts. Several of the interviewees have experienced dissonance when their beliefs collided with societal values and norms. Some of our interviewees have only had contact with other witnesses (aside from the inevitable contact through school) because they have been taught that "worldly people", or non-Witnesses, are evil and their enemies. Others have had several relationships with people outside the organization and have never experienced this as wrong or strange. The genuine cohesion they experienced during childhood has had a sharp end in connection with the respondents' exclusions, when virtually all the faithful witnesses chosen to turn their back on them. Following the exclusion, several interviewees sought professional help in the form of therapy and they all allege that their upbringing has had negative consequences for them in adulthood.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Patients who refuse a specific medical treatment for religious reasons must often overcome strongly entrenched presumptions held by physicians and judges, presumptions frequently based on personal values. A case in point is the refusal of blood transfusion therapy by Jehovah's Witnesses.
This paper rests on the following theory: The sanctity of life principle is not necessarily violated by respecting the autonomous decision of a patient who, for religious or moral reasons, chooses one therapy over another that may be favored by the treating physician. Where a patient has decided for conscientious reasons against a certain treatment in any given medical situation, the need to be informed will shift from the patient to the physician. The physician must understand the nature of the religious or moral conviction, as well as his own moral and legal obligation to respect the patient's wishes by providing the best medical care under the circumstances.

The main purpose of this research was to analyze, focusing on the hermeneutic perspective, the relationship between religious speech, originated from the biblical exegesis made by the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, and the standardization and organization of behavior, in particular, of the witness of Jehovah serving at Bethel, community fundamentally interconnected with the Association Watchtower Bible and Tract, which is basically their legal reason, located on Highway SP-141, Km 43, in Cesario Lange / SP. This is the place where all the preaching work is organized and publications are translated, printed and distributed for free during the preaching process. As a central character, the bethelite provided all the necessary content to our research. His daily experience was widely considered in the analisys from the subject behavior inside the total instituitions, within the same proportion in which we assessed theorical basis of understanding the faith experience and its deployment Michel Foucault and Erving Goffman offered support hermeneutic for understanding the religious discourse in Bethelite behavior. This was the analysis and understanding of religious experience in everyday life level, in their practices and contradictions, within the context of the headquarters of Jehovah‘s Witnesses in Brazil. The project aimed to answer the following problem: what is observed in Bethel can be described as alienation and domestication of behavior or as a conscious and sincere desire for inner discipline and collaboration in the production of all materials used in the ―preaching‖ of Jehovah's Witnesses? Beforehand, this dichotomy has justified the need to put the ―Tower under watching.‖

Religion and citizenship are terms full of meanings in our society. In this direction, this work has as an aim to comprehend the conception of citizenship of Jehovah’s Witnesses’, a religious group that from a peculiar view of world, besides making a distinction between the members of Jehovah’s Organization and the other members of the society, it considers that the current rules in the first one are superior to the laws that are held in the second one. So, all the choices made by the members of this organization occur from this understanding, which results in an exercise of citizenship, framed by religious convictions, such as conceived by it, in consequence of peculiar biblical comprehension. In order to attend the proposed study, some considerations about the history of the movement are initially made, followed by an approach about some aspects related to the view of world, deliberations about the process of formation of Kingdom of God's citizens and at last, some considerations about the conception of citizenship of these religious people.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to study the personal problems that can occur when defecting from a destructive cult, and what kind of support you may need from social authorities. The aim is to develop guidelines for social workers who are in contact with sect defectors. It’s a qualitative study based on interviews with six defectors from Jehovah’s witnesses. The results shows that all the defectors that have been interviewed have had anxiety problems, lost contact with friends and relatives, low level of education, and low self esteem when defecting or after. Most respondents have reported that they have had thoughts of suicide. It also occurs that respondents have had eating disorders, psychosomatic problems, drug abuse, lack of knowledge about society and have felt threatened and harassed in connection with the defection. These psychosocial problems that have been ascertained to constitute areas where social authorities should aid sect defectors. In accordance with the purpose of this thesis, guidelines are formed for social workers.

This work aims to research the identity transformation process from the moment of the conversion to the Religious Movement of Jehovah's Witnesses: a study of converts from two Congregations in Juiz de Fora. It initially approaches theoretical reflections on the postmodernity moment, the identity and the difference as well as a brief study on the religious conversion. It intends to show Jehovah's Witnesses reality from the point of view of the religious movement itself. The objective of this research is to understand the construction process of their new identity, how they harmonize with other converts and how they accept each other from the moment of their conversion. The work was modeled from Jehovah's Witnesses perspective. It is a vision of the Religious Movement of Jehovah's Witnesses based on their records and an analysis of the new identity based on these social actors' narratives in their own social environment.

The present study analyzes the representations of family among Jehovah's Witnesses in the city of St. Stephen, Bahia, located between the hinterland and Rec?ncavo, 40 km from Feira de Santana, from 1970 to 2001. The time frame of the research is related the beginning of the proselytizing activities of the group and ends with the construction of Kingdom Hall Avenue Teixeira de Freitas, one of the main avenues of the city. The study aimed to examine the tensions and power struggles in the holy - estevense religious field , caused by the insertion of a new group , especially for the strong influence of Catholicism in society of this city. The main tenets of the group , the millenarian character, identity building of the faithful and a new world view guided on the ideas of Jehovah's Witnesses are also discussed in this dissertation. We also analyzed the present among Jehovah's Witnesses , Bible -centered , with well-defined gender roles and differences that manifest in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the group androcentric discourse, since women do not hold jobs, despite the strong performance of proselytism and in the same Hall of internal activities, such as attending meetings, cleaning, among others. In the family, gender inequalities are also present, because the man is the head of the family, " head " and the woman, her helper, submissive to him. This is the model family that Jehovah's Witnesses are intended to represented by them, which involves the construction of habitus. However, between discourse and practice are the experiences and experiences of individuals who appropriate this discourse.

Abstract:
McPhail (1854-1931).
MUSIC AND JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES : HISTORICAL APPROACH TO THEIR HYMNALS AND MUSICAL PRACTICES Over the 130 years of history of Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s), music has been part of most of its meetings. They have published or used fifteen hymnals in English and at least six in Spanish and one in Catalan; they have used music for several decades in radio evangelism and from house to house; they have used large and small orchestras and choirs and they have edited sound recordings for both congregational and personal use. What is known about this? What are, or have been, their hymnals? Which hymns have they sung? Have they changed them over the years? Have they ever used or continue to use orchestras and choirs? What kind of sound recordings have they made? Who are the people behind all this? The approach of this paper is to get to know this lesser known aspect of JW’s: Musical practices within the group. It specially takes a historical approach of the hymnals they have edited and used and also of the people and other different "products" related to music (radio, recordings, orchestras, etc.). This thesis is made up of five chapters and five annexes. The chapters focus on the justification, state-of-the-art and methodology used (Chapter I). A general overview of JWs’ historical and musical background (Chapter II). A historical overview of their hymnals published in English since 1877 and the sources used (Chapter III). A similar description for those in Spanish since 1919 and in Catalan since 2008 (Chapter IV). Conclusions, sources and bibliography (Chapter V). The first two annexes deal exclusively with the historical development of the group in Spain (Annex I) and in a Catalan city (Annex II). The three remaining are directly related to the musical practices of JW's. They present a series of lists with the hymns of hymnals described in Chapters III and IV (Annex III). A historical description of sound recordings produced by JW's and the way they have used radio and music as well as orchestras and choirs (Annex IV). The final annex (Annex V) is dedicated to group members involved in its musical practices with special emphasis on the figure of M.L. McPhail (1854-1931).

Abstract:
The study of social allies in the field of American Civil Rights and Liberties History is largely an underappreciated aspect of this historical era. This work argues that social allies and their stories are worthwhile histories that are beneficial to the study of American Civil Rights and Liberties using Louisiana lawyer Herman Lazard Midlo as a case study. Midlo worked as a Louisiana lawyer from the 1930s to 1960s and fought tirelessly for the religious liberties of the Jehovah’s Witness community in the state. His story shows how beneficial and consequential the actions of social allies have had and can have on the protection and expansion of civil rights and religious liberties.

Abstract:
Since their founding in 1870, Jehovah's Witnesses have experienced spectacular growth until 1995, in the country where Christianity predominates. A gradual slowdown in growth was then observed, particularly in the industrialized countries in the mid-1990s. Moreover, their growth has been successfully imbalanced from one country to another. Thus, in 2017, there was a Jehovah's Witness for 50 people in Guadeloupe, one for 112 people in Barbados and one for 263 in the United States. This PhD thesis examines several growth factors, borrowing from the concepts of American sociologists Ryan Cragun and Ronald Lawson as well as Rodney Stark and Lawrence Iannacone, linking the growth of a religious group to the interaction between religious offerings and religious demand. in the country where the religious group settled. A literature search was conducted to examine the history and evolution of this religious movement. In addition to that, a qualitative method was adopted in interviews with dozens of Witnesses over several years and with participant observation, in order to better understand the movement, its doctrines, but also the motivations of the members. Then, a quantitative method was applied to a survey of hundreds of Jehovah's Witnesses in Barbados, in Guadeloupe and the United States of America. The specificities of these three countries partly explain the differences in growth observed in the religious group studied

Abstract:
Religious freedom is a fundamental freedom recognised by democracies. Not only religious groups, but also individuals, bring it up before the European Court. New religious groups and their members are granted more collective and individual rights. In France, fundamental principles bring legislators and judges to define and guarantee religious pluralism: all beliefs are equal. Everyone is free to practice his or her religion in public or in private, especially within the family. Judges referred to guarantee that the individual conscience will be respected. Nevertheless, the free religious practice of family members has objective limits, regardless of the religion one belongs to. Still, the way the authorities view the religious practice is not always the same. The political, social and legal treatment of minority religions in particular puts sometimes religious pluralism in question. Even if usually the judge appreciates situations in concreto, pluralism sometimes fails to be guaranteed due to a lack of homogeneity in the jurisprudence, tainted with prejudice, as well as the reticences of the ordinary judges to check more in depth the motivations of the trial judges. The condemnations of the European Courts are proof to this. The difficulties concern for the most part the appreciation of the fault, cause for divorce, or of the interest of the child. The reference to a standard of good religious practice is sometimes latent. In this matter, the expertise of the trial judges is often considered as sacred, and this can lead to some difficulties, as well as the lack of open-mindness of some experts who give opinions that can, in fine, influence the judge. The absence of religious age pre-majority and the strict application of the principle of secularism at school also pose some problems. Foreign solutions on this matter are interesting

Because of the geographic relationship with the family of landlords who believe in Jehovah's Witnesses, the researcher is interested in some special arguments about the zealous preaching of the witnesses and their teachings, and wants to further explore and study them. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to explore the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses. Taking the Congregation in Puli as an example, the senior elder of which mentioned above arranged 10 interviews to study the actual situation of the interviewees at four levels: the ways and attitudes of belief contact, belief activities, the changes in life after accepting beliefs, and the situation of preaching in Puli. Among them, there are some controversial issues at Jehovah's Witness beliefs, such as the issue of not transfusing blood because of abstinence from blood, the predicament of refusing to serve in military service because of religious conscience before the implementation of alternative service, and political neutrality so that they do not participate in electoral activities. In this study, qualitative research methods were adopted. During the three-month period, the researcher participated in the Wednesday or Sunday Service at the Kingdom Gathering Place in Puli about ten times, and conducted in-depth interviews with believers with semi-structured questionnaires. The interview materials presented the content analysis and findings of the interviews. The conclusion of this research shows that: 1. All the respondents express their political neutrality, but most of them believe that their lives will indeed be affected by political decision-making. 2. As for the issue of refusing to transfuse blood, family members' attitudes towards the respondents are supportive of the same belief; however, family members of different beliefs have different attitudes, some of which are not opposed or opposed. 3. The respondents' personal life and ways of making friends are deeply influenced by their beliefs and by the sense of group identity. 4. The respondents have different views on whether preaching in Puli is stressful or not. 5. Respondents are diligent in reading "Bible, New World Translation" and other publications of Jehovah's Witnesses. 6. Respondents believe that Jehovah's Witnesses have similarities and differences with other Christians. The results of this study are only for those who are interested in this topic. However, due to the limitations of research samples, research tools and research methods, it is not appropriate to extend the inference to the global Jehovah's Witness belief in order to avoid any deviation.

Abstract:
Jehovah's Witnesses claim to be the sole advocates for God's truth at this point in redemptive history. Basing this belief on their interpretation of Matthew 24:45-47 and Luke 12:42-45, the Watchtower Society proclaims that their organization is led by "the faithful and discreet slave" (FDS) of the end times. This FDS is the Governing Body of the Society, which has been charged with the responsibility of providing spiritual food for Jehovah's people. According to the Witnesses, to discount the message of the FDS is to ignore the voice of God. History reveals that the identity and the message of the FDS have changed since the conception of the Watchtower organization. The movement's founder, Charles Taze Russell, was first known as the FDS of Matthew 24 but lost the title after his death when the new leader of the group shifted the identity away from an individualistic understanding to a corporate one. After proclaiming for the bulk of the organization's history that the 144,000 anointed Witnesses were the FDS, the Society recently changed their understanding of this end times' servant in 2012. Currently, the FDS is only the anointed Witness men that are serving on the Governing Body of the Society. This progressive shift in the organization's understanding of the FDS and the eventual disappearance of these anointed Witnesses continues to necessitate theological realignments, which in turn lays the apologetic groundwork for evangelism to the Jehovah's Witnesses. As redemptive history continues to unfold, the Watchtower Society will be forced to clarify or reinterpret many of their foundational teachings. Such reinvention further opens the apologetic door for evangelism among disillusioned Witnesses. When the Watchtower organization again searches to recast their leadership along with their message, authentic Christians must be ready and seeking to direct Witnesses to the unchanging message of the gospel.

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, publishers and distributors of all documents used and disseminated by Jehovah’s Witnesses, claim that Jesus is subordinate to God the Father and that he is the first of his creation, and therefore not co-eternal or co-equal with him. The focus of this thesis is to investigate early Christian primary and secondary sources as well as contemporary scholarly opinions and compare them to Watchtower teachings to determine whether Jehovah’s Witnesses’ understanding of the ‘firstborn of creation’ of Colossians 1:15 can be said to be a legitimate interpretation of this expression and whether their Christology can be reconciled with New Testament writings. Based on the traditional Christian hermeneutical reappropriation of Hebrew texts and the traditional understanding of the entire Christian canon of Sripture, the claim that the Son must be a created being does not truly find irrefutable substantiation.

Abstract:
This thesis traces the history of Conscientious Objection and draft evasion from the introduction of the Universal Male Conscription system in 1949 to the end of the authoritarian dictatorship period in 1993. I especially focus on the persecution and stigmatization of religious Conscientious Objector groups such as the South Korean Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Seventh-day Adventists. The negative labeling of these Conscientious Objectors as social deviants is part of an initiative led by the South Korean state to solidify Universal Male Conscription as a social norm. This process was supported by the implementation of a national surveillance system as well as the intensification of a nation-wide crackdown on draft evasion, which was viewed indifferently from Conscientious Objection. Thus, this project reveals the ostracization of Conscientious Objection as well as the normalization of Universal Male Conscription as an interconnected issue that came to be perpetuated throughout South Korean History.

Abstract:
The topic of the diploma thesis is ``The Nursing Approach to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses at Medical Treatment Units{\crq}q. The probability of a nurse coming across a Jehovah{\crq}s Witness is considerable. Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses form a large group within the Czech Republic, and therefore the nursing staff should also be ready to treat patients who belong to this community. All this in compliance with the current trend of applying the thoughts of transcultural/multicultural nursing while treating the patients. The present thesis is a contribution to this very discipline. Its task was to investigate the specifics of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community, and what the expectations of their members are when it comes to nursing care. With reference to the specifics and expectations, we attempted to detect the problem situations that may come up when caring for the members of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community. All this information was investigated in order to be able to offer culturally sensitive nursing care to the patients who belong to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community. For the empiric part of the thesis, four objectives were set that lead to three research questions and three hypotheses. Two research methods were chosen, the qualitative method: a semi-standardized dialogue with the respondents being members of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses; and a quantitative method: a questionnaire for the nursing staff of the medical treatment units. The conception of a Jehovah{\crq}s Witness in general is improved by the division of the information in the dialogue according to the Giger and Davidhizar transcultural nursing assessment model. For further clarification of the problem, questions concerning hospitalization and nursing staff were added. The results of the dialogues were drafted as case reports which were then categorized in transparent tables and charts. The questionnaire contained identification questions and questions clarifying the given problem. The remaining questions were aimed at direct or indirect verification of the hypotheses we have set. The outcome of the questionnaire investigation is introduced using tables and charts. The specifics of the approach of the nursing staff are summarized in a nursing care standard, which can be used by the nursing staff when caring for a client/patient who belongs to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses. The thesis offers information on the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community, and explains the singularities of the approach of the nursing staff towards them. The outcome of the thesis should serve as study material for the students of nursing disciplines, and at the same time we would appreciate it if it was published to become available to the professional community. The thesis should be a contribution to the improvement of the quality of nursing care.

The aim of this study is to ascertain whether a need exists for specific therapeutic guidelines for ex-members of destructive cults. This study is intended to work complementary to existing therapeutic techniques. The point of departure of this study is that the influence that the process of mind control can have on a person, should be taken into consideration in therapy. During the literature study and personal contact with ex-cult members it was found that even years after they had left the cult, individuals still suffered from the consequences of mind control. Apparently problems are not solved before insight is gained into the way in which deception and control has taken place. For a therapist it would thus be necessary to gain insight into the relationship that exists between psychological problems that people experience and mind control before therapy can be successfully undertaken. Initially the definitions and characteristics of cults are discussed. The personality, methods of exercising control and the relationships of the typical cult leader are discussed. Factors that can make a person more vulnerable to recruitment are discussed and a distinction is made between the two main influencing strategies in cults, namely brainwashing and mind control. The course of the process of mind control is discussed, as well as the personal disadvantages of membership to cults. The following psychological processes which can be present in mind control, are discussed, namely: attitudes, persuasion, cognitive dissonance and conditions of altered consciousness, i.e. dissociation, psychogenic amnesia, depersonalisation, derealisation, hypnosis and suggestion. In order to obtain more accurate information about the typical ex-cult member, interviews were conducted with a sample group of six persons. For the sake of qualitative deepening, in-depth studies were conducted with two of these persons. On the basis of the information that was obtained from the literature study and from the sample group, guidelines for the design of a therapeutic program for ex-cultists are presented.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of health care professionals to alternatives to blood transfusion for Jehovah's Witnesses patients in a critical care setting. Methodology: Quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to explore the attitudes and perceptions of health care professional to alternatives to blood transfusion, in a critical care setting. The study was conducted in four largest hospitals in the Durban Metropolitan area, of which two were public and two private. A questionnaire was used as tool for collecting data. Space was provided to accommodate comments from the respondents in the questionnaire. Analysis of findings was done quantitatively by using a computer programme called SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences), version 11.5. Themes that emerged from the participant's responses were classified under categories in the conceptual framework and analysed qualitatively. Findings: Most of the respondents had mixed feelings about using alternatives to blood transfusion. The study revealed, however, that although alternatives to blood transfusions were commonly used in a critical care setting, some of the respondents did not know about the different types of alternatives available. Furthermore, it was evident from the respondent's comments that most of them had a positive attitude to people who refused blood transfusion and preferred alternatives. Research into suitable alternatives to blood transfusion was encouraged by most of the respondents. However, transfusion transmitted diseases emerged as a current concern over and above the religious concerns. Recommendations for the future were made for the health care professionals working in critical care setting, nurse educators and nursing management.

"Communicating Religious Disaffiliation: A Study of the Context, Family Conversations, and Face Negotiation among Young Adults." Doctoral diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.34811.

Abstract:
abstract: This study investigated how young adults communicate their decision to religiously disaffiliate to their parents. Both the context in which the religious disaffiliation conversation took place and the communicative behaviors used during the religious disaffiliation conversation were studied. Research questions and hypotheses were guided by Family Communication Patterns Theory and Face Negotiation Theory. A partially mixed sequential quantitative dominate status design was employed to answer the research questions and hypotheses. Interviews were conducted with 10 young adults who had either disaffiliated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Watch Tower Society. During the interviews, the survey instrument was refined; ultimately, it was completed by 298 religiously disaffiliated young adults. For the religious disaffiliation conversation’s context, results indicate that disaffiliated Jehovah’s Witnesses had higher conformity orientations than disaffiliated Latter-day Saints. Additionally, disaffiliated Jehovah’s Witnesses experienced more stress than disaffiliated Latter-day Saints. Planning the conversation in advance did lead to the disaffiliation conversation being less stressful for young adults. Furthermore, the analysis found that having three to five conversations reduced stress significantly more than having one or two conversations. For the communicative behaviors during the religious disaffiliation conversation, few differences were found in regard to prevalence of the facework behaviors between the two groups. Of the 14 facework behaviors, four were used more often by disaffiliated JW than disaffiliated LDS—abuse, passive aggressive, pretend, and defend self. In terms of effectiveness, the top five facework behaviors were talk about the problem, consider the other, have a private discussion, remain calm, and defend self. Overall, this study begins the conversation on how religious disaffiliation occurs between young adults and their parents and extends Family Communication Patterns Theory and Face Negotiation Theory to a new context.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to describe the contradictions of Christian denominations, not dogmatically doctrinal, but generally doctrinal, in terms of how they arise and how they impact the thinking within the respective groups. Two churches were selected for this comparison, the Catholic Church and Jehovah's Witnesses, as representatives of the denominations with the most notable differences. The initial starting point is the history of the two churches, which highlights the cultural and historical conditions under which the two churches were formed. Further work on two cases of conflict, the concept of the Holy Trinity and access to apostolic succession, discusses the basic argumentative practices that apply to both churches. This passage shows that on this level the difference between the two communities is only minimal, the procedures applied by both are consistent. The argument is followed by the interpretative part, which deals with the search for the causes of discrepancies in the diversity of interpretations of the Bible, which was published as a joint authority of both communities from previous argumentation analysis. Finally, this work describes how the differences resulting from different interpretations are involved in the daily life and organization of the Church. A different discourse...
